Jesus on the Cross. Acts of the Apostles 5:29-32
But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than any human authority. [30]The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead after you killed him by hanging him on a cross. [31]Then God put him in the place of honor at his right hand as Prince and Savior. He did this so the people of Israel would repent of their sins and be forgiven. [32]We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him.” NLT.

Good morning dear friends, I welcome you to another teaching this morning and I pray that the knowledge of God will transform us into His image In Jesus name. Today, our topic is; “Jesus on the Cross”. It is specific about Jesus on the cross not Jesus on the way to the cross or Jesus before He got arrested but Jesus on the cross. There are some things about Him on the cross that God wants us to know. I pray that God will open our eyes and hearts to receive from Him in Jesus name. There are eight significant things Jesus did on the cross and they will discussed in no particular order in this teaching.

1. Jesus bore our sins on the cross: Hebrews 9:11-15
So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. [12]With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever. [13]Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. [14]Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. [15]That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant. NLT.

Jesus was without sin but He offered Himself as the sacrificial lamb of the whole world by bearing the sins of the world on Himself so that we can be free from sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21: For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. NLT.
Jesus was perfect but God made Him our sin offering so that we can be made right with God. Thus, we are not made right with God by virtue of what we have done but by what God has done for us. Ephesians 2:8-10: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. [9]Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. [10]For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. NLT.

The selfless act of Jesus on the cross captures the content of John 3:16-17 perfectly, it was done out of love for His creation who could not help themselves out of their sins.

2. Jesus pleaded for forgiveness for people on the cross: Luke 23:34
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. NLT.

When Jesus was hung on the cross in between two thieves, He pleaded to God to forgive the ignorance of all who shouted crucify Him and those that nailed Him. He did not ask for their death or severe punishment, instead He pleaded for mercy because He is merciful.

3. He gave eternal life: Luke 23:39-43
One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, “So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!” [40]But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die? [41]We deserve to die for our crimes, but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.” [42]Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” [43]And Jesus replied, “I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.” NLT.

To prove that He is God, Jesus promised paradise to the thief on the right hand side depicting that He has power to give eternal life to anyone that asks for it.

4. He fulfilled every prophecy: John 19:28-30
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.” [29]A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. [30]When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and released his spirit. NLT.

This is a two in one action performed by Jesus, He knew what was written about Him and He made sure to fulfil all while on the cross, He left no stone unturned, he fulfilled everything even to the minor detail just for our redemption to be complete.

5. He relied heavily on the Father: Matthew 27:46
At about three o’clock, Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” NLT.

This is another two in one action in which Jesus performed by showing His reliance on the Father when He was on the cross. When He could not feel the presence of God, He called out to Him, and when He was about to die, He committed His life into His hands. Jesus, though He was equal with God, relied on God for the work of our salvation because He did it not in His heavenly glory but in the flesh as a man.

6. He showed compassion: John 19:26
When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the disciple he loved, he said to her, “Dear woman, here is your son.” NLT.

Jesus as a man felt everything in terms of emotion and He had compassion for His earthly mother. This shows that He is compassionate and He is aware of our feelings and the things we go through. Consequentially, because He is aware of our feelings, He cares about them and He gives us what we need as long as they align with His desire even before we ask for them.

These are the things Jesus, did on the cross, He did not retaliate while He was persecuted, instead He prayed for those that crucified Him, He showed compassion, He relied on the Father to get through the process, He bore the sins He did not commit, and He fulfilled all prophecies written about Him. This is our saviour who did all He had to do to secure our liberty. Therefore, it is crucial that you give your life to Him in response to His mercy and love. If you are reading this and you have not given your life to Him, I urge you to do so by saying this prayer wholeheartedly; Lord Jesus, I confess you as my Lord and saviour today, please save me and be my lord and bring me into your fold. Amen. If you have recited the prayer wholeheartedly, I congratulate you and I welcome you to the family of God. Make sure you join a bible believing church as you start your journey in Christ.
