Politics / Nigeria Planning $25bn Infrastructure Fund by trinel(m): 8:02am On Oct 30, 2015 |
Nigeria planning $25bn infrastructure fund:
Abuja - Nigeria plans to set up a $25bn
inf rastructure fund to invest in the
transport and energy sectors in Africa's
most populous nation, a spokesperson for
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on
Thursday.
Laolu Akande said money for the planned
fund would come from local and
international sources including Nigeria's
sovereign wealth fund and domestic
pension funds.
"The vice president disclosed that other
sovereign wealth funds have already
indicated an interest in the fund, which
would be used to address the nation's
decaying road, rail and power
infrastructures," said Akande.
He did not say when exactly the fund
would be set up.
The nation of 170 million people is Africa's
top oil producer, but it requires
infrastructure development to help boost
economic growth.
The West African nation's economy, the
biggest on the continent, has been
hammered by the fall in oil prices. The
country relies on crude exports for around
70% of government revenues.
Osinbajo, who has been asked to oversee
economic policy by President Muhammadu
Buhari, referred to the infrastructure fund
proposals while speaking to diplomats,
including ambassadors from Italy and
Canada, the vice presidency said in a
statement.
Osinbajo also reiterated the
administration's view that Nigeria's
currency, the naira, does not need to be
devalued, the statement said.
"It is not a solution. We are not exporting
significantly. The way things are,
devaluation will not help the local
economy," he was quoted as saying.
His comments come days after former
central bank governor Lamido Sanusi said
Nigeria would have to devalue and loosen
monetary policy to stimulate its economy.
The naira was officially devalued last
November and underwent a de facto
devaluation again in February.
Godwin Emefiele, the current central bank
governor, has repeatedly said the currency
was "appropriately" priced and has ruled
out another naira devaluation.

Politics / Boko Haram Are Christian by trinel(m): 6:52pm On Jul 15, 2015 |
A report on the website of Radio France
International (RFI) has revealed that some
members of the terrorist group, Boko Haram
are of the christian faith.
According to the report, little is known about the
Islamist sect and much public information about
them is not correct.

The Times
The European Conference on African Studies set
to hold this week gave Nigerian researchers an
opportunity to meet in Paris and took part in a
round table entitled “Within and around Boko
Haram in Nigeria”.
Read the comments of two researchers below:
Ini Dele-Adedeji (School of Oriental and African
Studies):
* Boko Haram’s pledged allegiance to the
Islamic State
“Transnational, international aims – I have not
seen evidence to support that. So I think they
want to carve out a Sharia state in a part of
northern Nigeria. But I don’t think they intend
for it to cover the whole of sub-Saharan
Africa.”
Murray Last: University College of London:
1. Lack of knowledge about Boko Haram
“The real problem of Boko Haram is that no
one has actually infiltrated them or if they
have, they haven’t come out, or they’ve joined
them. So the level of knowledge about the
insides of Boko Haram is remarkedly small.”
2. Boko Haram leadership – Abubakar Shekau
“If you analyse the photographs you seem to
have so many people that might be Shekau.
Shekau has been pronounced dead by the
Nigerian press and army so many times. So
what one’s dealing with is quite possibly the
title of leader like Shekau, which could be
applied to anyone.”
3. Number of fighters, salary and Christians
“It’s almost certainly bound to be about 5,000,
but some people put the numbers up way
higher. The other problem is that of course as
far as we know it’s quite a good job, at one
point you could be paid 400 dollars a month
for just simply joining them, you wouldn’t
have to go fighting, you would spend your first
months doing logistics or training. It’s quite
profitable joining Boko Haram because you not
only loot places, but you share the loot out at
the end. And the third point that I think is
important to realise is that there are plenty of
Christians who are part of Boko Haram
because it’s a job.” |
Politics / The Main Fact About Isis by trinel(m): 6:43pm On Jul 15, 2015 |
ISIS is one of the strongest and most radical
islamic terrorist organisations. This set of
answers to main questions about ISIS will help
you to imagine how horrible and powerful they
are.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) also
known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the
Levant (ISIL) or simply Islamic State (IS) is an
Islamic extremist rebel group controlling
territory in at least four countries, including
Libya, Nigeria, Iraq, Syria with operations or
affiliates in Lebanon, Egypt, and other areas of
the Middle East,North and West Africa,South,
and Southeast Asia.
1. Leader
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi: Very little is known about
al-Baghdadi, but a biography posted on jihadist
websites in 2013 said he earned a doctorate in
Islamic studies from a university in Baghdad.
Part of the Iraqi insurgency, Baghdadi was
arrested in 2006 and held at Camp Bucca, an
American prison in Iraq. Baghdadi joined al-
Qaeda following his release. Now, he is the most
wanted and feared terrorist in the world, with a
$10 million bounty on his head.
2.Why do they exist?
ISIS exist to spread Islam and Islamic rule across
the lands of the classical Abassid Caliphate and
further even into the Iberian Peninsula. As such,
ISIS shows little understanding of the very
checkered history of the Caliphate. In this, ISIS
tends to be a type of romantic movement but an
incredibly brutal one. Many Sunnis in Iraq (and
Syria) feel disenfranchised by either the Alawite
rule of Bashar al-Assad in Damascus or the
Shi’ite rule of Nouri al-Maliki in Baghdad. I think
many Sunnis look upon ISIS as the only effective
opposition to, especially, the regime in Baghdad.
I am not sure but I suspect that the loyalty does
not go much deeper.
3. Origin
ISIS’ beginnings can be traced to the Second
Gulf War in 2003, when the U.S., along with a
small coalition of other nations, invaded Iraq
and toppled dictator Saddam Hussein. Amongst
the diverse insurgency fighting coalition forces
and new Iraqi government was the extremist
Islamic group al-Qaida in Iraq.
ISIS was formed out of the al-Qaida affiliate in
2013 and led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
4. Aim
The aim of ISIS is to create an Islamic state,
referred to as a caliphate, across Sunni areas of
Iraq and in Syria.
5. Funds
The Islamic State is one of the best-funded
terrorist organizations operating today. With
private financiers allegedly coming from Qatar,
Yemen and Saudi Arabia, the Islamic State also
controls several oil fields, operates complex
extortion schemes throughout its territory and
heavily taxes the people living under its rule. |
