This is a follow up on our last thread where we cried out for help over the probable demolition of Yaba Industrial Estate despite an existing court order to maintain status quo.

Over 100 businesses displaced as Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu orders the demolition of the 1st Industrial Estare in Nigeria - Yaba Industrial Estate.

Centuries of honest labour destroyed under 3hours, Yaba industrial Estate, a safe haven built in 1958 to support the development of industries in the country was ripped apart on Thursday 16th December 2021 with no remorse. The buildings within the estate had no structural defects and even stronger than newly built structures.

The victims and their families are now left devastated and in pain. They have no where to go, no equipment to work with and totally destabilized. This is the Christmas cheer Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu and the Ministry of fiscal planning & urban development have for hardworking industrialists who have spent their life building for this country.

The demolition was unlawfully carried out not withstanding the pendency of suit No: LD/4639GCM/2017 between the occupiers of the Industrial estate and the Lagos state government. The Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu when reached by the Honorable representing Lagos Mainland Hon Moshood Oshun said “He thought they had a court ruling” so he gave his approval for demolition on mere fabrications and not facts. Now hundreds have been displaced, businesses shattered, staffs rendered unemployed. I mean when will the negligence and wickedness stop, when will the government start having regard for the common man, when will the government stop abusing its power and disregarding the law.

The occupants were not even given the opportunity to stop working or to take their belongings before demolition. It is indeed disturbing that the Governor will claim not to have any information about this case and also very sad that the same government that should uphold laws are the ones breaking them.

It’s unfortunate that in the midst of the current hardship and inflation, the Lagos state has chosen to destroy the livelihood of humble hardworking SMEs rather than support or develop them. This is a clear act of executive lawlessness and injustice. Please Save Our Soul!!

The Yaba Industrial Estate was purposefully built by the Federal Government in 1959 and gazetted for the use of the small and medium-
scale enterprises in manufacturing.

Lagos State Government is trying to forcefully evict us from our officially allocated factory spaces without provision of another location
to continue our various manufacturing and production businesses, or adequate compensation — Occupants and entrepreneurs of the Yaba
Industrial Estate.

-In February 2004 during the the Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu administration, the SME Occupants received a letter of relocation without any proper location.

-In 2012/2013 during the Raji Fashola’s administration, the governor started an upgrade of infrastructure of the estate and provision of IPP
with a properlu drafted MOU prepared by Femi Okunu’s chambers which never saw the light of day.

-In January 2017 under the administration of Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, a press conference was held in the estate announcing the conversion of the estate intended to be redevoloped for the use of the present SME to an ICT Hub, with a clear mandate that the present occupants would not be disturbed and intimidated until they are properly relocated at
Imota Industrial Park.

-But since January 2021, there’s ben countless harassment, intimidation and demolition of structures despite the former governor's order of
relocation and current court injunction asking all parties to maintain status quo on the estate until judgement is given.

The government has continuously brought fully armed mobile police officers to disrupt business activities and intimidate us at every visit to
the estate, which is unethical and leaves us insecure in our places of legitimate businesses.”

“We are not traders or shop owners, but factory owners, licensed by the Federal Government regulatory agencies to manufacture and
produce made in Nigeria products. We pay our personal and company taxes.”

“The government is supposed to provide for all Nigerian stakeholders in commerce, industry and civil service under a secured atmosphere.
We don’t feel safe any longer on the estate because of the armed policemen with government agencies at every visit, and our sources of
livelihood are being threatened. We are appealing to the Lagos State government and it's agencies to please respect the rule of law, and giveus the treatment we deserve as patriotic Nigerians.
