All these are economics rhetorics. When their economic policies beging to fail, to start attacking the innocents.

In France they started with the Muslims, then moved to the Gypsies, next will be the black population.

It is the same trend here too. He will start with the so called Islamic extrimist. He will move to muslims. Then to gypsies

They should understand their economic and diplomatic policies abroad drives migration towards their country.

Cuddling and bowing to the Saudi Government that habours and spread hardline arab ideologies disguise as Islamic ideologies, but turning to the low key hardworking muslims that pay their taxes.

KnowAll:

[size12pt]The only way settlers can be accepted as indigenes is by way of assimilation into the host community. It would be foolhardy and de-sensitizing for a group who have settled in a new land to continue practicing ways of life and cultures that are alien to the locals. Firstly by sticking to your tradition and way of life u would not only stick-out like a sore thumb in the host community, but in times of hard-ship and other anti-social asunder these rather peculiar group of people would be targeted and picked upon as a/the group that should be punished for societies' inadequacies  and downfall.

By Assimilating Igbo indigenes that have settled in Lagos would have names like

Olakunle Okechukwu, olafemi Emaka, and of course well known Rotimi Amechi - Names like that gives the settlers the an assurance knowing that this lady/Gentleman although with a somewhat foreign sounding name is as good a lagosian as a Dosumu or Kosoko,  the Igbo sounding surname points to the person's heritage but the Yoruba first name put credance and validity  to the fact this person is a Lagosian whose parents have settled in Lagos a long time and this individual would actually feel at home amongst Yorubas in the SW than amongst his father's kith's and kin  from the SE.

This phenomena is common in America where immigrants into the so called new world  adopt Anglo-American first name, like Jack Montana, the name Montana gives a not too discerning person that vague idea that this individual is an "Italian or Latin American" this wild guess cannot be further from the truth.

The Hausas in Jos by now after settling in Jos for over 100 years,  should have adopted the Christian faith of the Beroms and not hold stubbornly to their old religion, how can the Beroms trust them when they still believe in " Mohammedism" and Jihadism.

The Tapa's in Lagos Island are fully integrated into that society because they have not only jettison their islamic first names but they have deliberately chosen for themselves  Yoruba first names in other to blend with the locals. " Demola Seriki" is a good example.

A name like "Ugochuckwu Opkara" would not hold it in Lagos but a name like Olusegun Opkpara gives the individual a duplicity that implies he has antecedents in both Yorubaland and Igboland and can exploit his/her new world to the best of his/her advantage.

When the whites migrated from Europe, they didn't adopt Indians Languages, they used European languages for communication.

100 - 120 years ago, majority of Nigerians in the south are not christains. The missionaries brought the religion to Nigeria.
100 years ago there was no Jos. Jos was a mining centre, the economic activity attracted people all over.
Moreover Jos is sandwitch between Hausa Fulani cities and it will be difficult for the people to adopt the local culture, wherein when they came the people didn't even have indigenous religion. Also you should understand at certain time during the history of Plateau, the area was under the dominion of Bauchi Emirate, and therefore had signficant impacts on the culture and religion of the people.
What you should also understand in Plateau, there are indigenous Hausa Fulani particularly in Wase. They have equal right to the ownership of the state with the Berom, Angas etc.

I think you doesn't even know that the Jos city itself is just 10 kms away from the Bauchi boarder where towns of Bauchi are.

You also doesn't know that the ethnic diversity in Jos is so much that they had to adopt the Hausa language for communication. If you go to Churches, they preach with Hausa Language.

There is no standard rule for human and society evolution. Anybody that want to fixed or defines the natural evolution of a society, he will start war.

The problem in Nigeria is majority of us and our leaders are short sighted and ethnocentric. Nigeria is a very small country in terms of land with consideration of our population (150M est.) and numerous ethnic groups. There isn't sufficient space for every single ethnic group to carve its own enclave or state. We have to interract, do business and give people equal opportunity to contribute to the development of our country. We just have to learn to live together.

T9ksy:

@ bolded, will the second settler defend the land and society if attacked by members of his/her ethnic group?
This is where the conundrum lies.
Will the hausas in Jos fight alongside the beroms  against the hausa/fulanis invading the city?
Will (3rd generation) igbos fight alongside lagosians when the city is attacked by igbos from enugu?

Oh btw, what's your idea of "genuine nationalism" as in the nigerian context?
What a load of tripe!

Why should hausa/fulani invades Jos? The crises in Jos is not about Hausa/Fulani invading Jos, it is between the Hausa/Fulani settled in Jos for decades and who contributed to the economic development of the State with the Natives of the areas. Why won't 3rd generation igbos fight along Lagosians if they are considered Lagosians and given equal right and opportunity to contribute to both the development and defence of the city. When people are living among you and you still consider them migrants after 2nd, 3rd, generation, they will begin to think that and will not owe allegiance to the state. The first constituency of every man is where his source of survival lies, and in most cases is where his business and food comes from.

Genuine nationalism is understanding what is good for the state, contributing to the state and protecting the interest of the state. It is a known fact that no society.culture can survive in isolation. There must be interraction with other people. But you have to give these people rights and sense of belonging. What is happening in Jos is harassment of other ethnic groups for political and economic gains.

Politics / Re: Indigine Vs Settler by Tsiya(m): 11:18am On Feb 05, 2011
The issue of settler and indigene is a constitutional crises that need to be addressed. It limits internal migration within the Nigerian state which has been happening for centuries until recently.

The case of Jos is a complex issue. 70 - 80 years ago. Jos was mining village; and as a result of the economic activities going on their, the village grew organically. This is the reason why there is large population of Hausa in Jos.

Personally, in the context of human kind, everybody is a settler. The first settler should welcome the second settler and give him equal opportunity to contribute and defend the land and the society.

This how they do it in more advance societies and prior to colonization of Nigeria. Today we can find Nigerians as far away as Poland living as citizens and having the right to contest and win election.

In the Nigerian context, it is more of a political tool than genuine nationalism.

CHIEFTAINS of the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF) under the chairmanship of former Minister of Finance, Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, are ready with a list of conditions that would enable them back the aspiration of President Goodluck Jonathan in the April  general elections, sources have revealed.Sources confirmed that the list of demands that is being pushed before the president include full accommodation of Atiku in the PDP structure, allocation of key ministries to the North and some ambassadorial postings.

It was gathered that some of the ministries being targeted by the northern politicians include Agriculture, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),  Defence, Works, the Attorney General of the Federation and the retention of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) seat.

Key ambassadorial postings to countries like the United States, United Kingdom, China, France and Germany are also on the list.

Although the president is expected to set up the meeting, the leaders believe that they need to go there fully prepared on their position, a source has said.

It was confirmed that series of review meetings held by members of the Forum, in consultation with the four presidential aspirants, who constituted the northern consensus arrangement, yielded the conditions.

Sources said that Alhaji Ciroma hosted most of the meetings, while some of them took place outside his Abuja residence.

It was learnt that while members of the NPLF were immediately hurt by President Jonathan’s victory over their preferred candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the series of meetings have deliberated on the possibilities ahead of the April polls.
A source, however, said that Jonathan’s declaration that he would not seek re-election in 2015, if elected immediately, served as the impetus that oiled the possibility of discussions with the president.

A source said that the discussions,
among the main promoters of NPLF, had fully taken notice of the president’s declaration in Ethiopia and had helped in softening their earlier hard stance.

Sources also confirmed that the declaration by Abubakar on Thursday that he and members of the NPLF were ready for dialogue was a result of the discussions among the forum’s leadership.

A number of options were said to have been toyed with following Atiku’s defeat at the presidential primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on January 13.

One of the options was to encourage Abubakar to head to court to further pursue the zoning tango, while another was to encourage Alhaji Sani Dutsinma, who earlier went to court to stop Jonathan, to continue with the suit.

Abubakar initially was quoted as telling one of the meetings that “the battle had just begun.”

Another option said to have been toyed with was the possibility of dragging the North to back General Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), but it was learnt that opinions were divided on Buhari, who has never shown any respect for the zoning agenda being pursued by the NPLF.

“It was then resolved that the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know,” a source said of the decision to work out an arrangement with Jonathan.

“The leaders have since seen the danger in following Buhari and then Jonathan’s declaration that he would not contest in 2015 appears attractive to the North. They believe that Abubakar could still stand election in 2015,” a source said.

Tribune has been in the fore-front of spreading hatred against Northern people. I have monitored this newspaper for the past and all their news are conspiracy theories that always turn out to be falls. But instead of people holding them accountable, they churn out another conspiracy theory to defend themselves.

First of all, all their quoatations are not from the same people, but from one of their sources who incedentally is against Ciroma and co.

News have to be vetted and this is not news.

Politics / Re: Makarfi Claims That Sanusi Has Apologised To National Assembly by Tsiya(m): 8:27pm On Feb 03, 2011
babytejiri:

Senator Ahmed Makarfi, Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance has said that Nigerians did not understand the Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, when he (Sanusi) said members of the National Assembly alone were spending 25 per cent of the country’s annual budget.
Ahmed Makarfi, who spoke to journalists in Kaduna at an interactive forum disclosed that he received a letter from Sanusi, in which the CBN boss allegedly apologised to the National Assembly over the controversial 25 per cent and blamed Nigerians for misquoting him.

He added the letter also explained that members of the National Assembly were only spending 25 per cent of the overhead cost and not 25 per cent of the nation’s annual total budget.
The CBN governor had some time late last year stirred the hornet’s nest when he told Nigerians that members of the National Assembly were spending a total of 25 per cent out of the nation’s annual total budget. This had since generated debate across the country.
“CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, did not say that the National Assembly was consuming 25 per cent of the nation’s annual budget, He claimed.

“As a matter of fact, two or three days after his appearance before our joint committee he wrote me a letter officially to voice in that he didn’t say 25 per cent of the nation’s annual budget, he didn’t say 25 per cent of the nation’s total revenue, he didn’t say the nation’s total recurrent expenditure, but 25 per cent of overhead.
“Overhead figure treated by Sanusi, when you take it as percentage of the budget itself, will come to about eight per cent of the total budget, the entire nation’s overhead will come to about eight per cent of the nation’s budget.

“So I have to correct the statement Sanusi made, he didn’t say what exactly you said, and he himself repeated it, but whatever it may be, how much does it cost to run government, and that government is not National Assembly alone, government is all arms, and we are committed to bringing down the cost of running government.”
http://www.nigeriacurrentnews.com/senator-ahmed-makarfi-sanusi-has-apologised-to-national-assembly/

Who is this guy fooling?

All along, Sanusi has being saying 25% of the Federal Government Overhead.

SANUSI: RIGHTEOUS DEFIANCE AS AN ARMOUR
Defiant and even adjudged cocky by some senators at the hearing, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi told his hosts, majority of whom displayed open antagonism towards him that the figure he used to arrive at the conclusion that the national assembly is responsible for 25% expenditure of the over head spending of the federal government was from the Budget Office as such he does not have any reason to retract the statement accredited to him in the media.

“First of all let’s talk about the text of what I said and the context. If you read the story and not the headlines, many of the newspapers have what I said as quotation.

Now take the Vanguard. Vanguard says ‘National Assembly drains the economy, gulps 25 percent of the recurrent expenditure’ on page one and if you read the story, you come to page 53, it is quoting me in quotation mark, ‘if you look at the budget, the bulk of government spending is on recurrent expenditure, that is a big problem. 25 percent of the over head of the federal government goes to the National Assembly. 25 percent of over head of the Federal Government goes to the National Assembly that is what is said in quotation mark.

If you go the Tribune, ‘the government is in trouble’ front page, if you look at the budget the bulk of government spending on recurrent expenditure, that is a big problem, 25 percent of over head of Federal Government goes to National Assembly in quote. I saw the same quote in the NATION. 25 percent of over head of Federal Government goes to National Assembly.

“I confirm Mr. Chairman that I did say in my speech at the Igbinedion University that 25 percent of the overhead of the Federal Government goes to National Assembly. I have figures from the office of budget for the year 2010. Total government overhead is N536, 268, 49, 280.

Total overhead of the National Assembly is N136, 259, 768, 112 which is exactly 25.1 percent of Federal Government overhead. The overhead of the National Assembly as a percentage of the Federal Government budget in 2009 was 19. 87 and in 2008 was 14.19.

Sanusi has maintained that the NASS consumes 25% of the Gov't overhead. The Gov't employs, army, police, immigration, custom, ministries etc but takes only 75% of the overhead. This is scary for any nation.

The problem with Nigerian government, politicians and police is the refusal to admit the truth. The Governor and police were saying it was a political assasination but we all know that the Boko Haram has taken a dangerous turn long time ago. Instead of our intelligence services to swing into action, the only thing they can think of doing is to flood the city with police and army who are mostly have low IQ and become ready target for the Boko Haram.

Maiduguri is a desert city. There are no mountains and no forrest; fishing these people out would have been much easier if the police/intelligence services were doing their job.

Every country have their own peculiar problem, and the way the problem is approach will be different. But I do not like the way some people belittle the effort of numerous Nigerians that sacrificed their life, wealth and career for us to get to this level of democracy. Of course what you are seeing is because the Protesters are embolden and protected by the International media. If this was to happen in the early 90s and 80s, majority of these protestors would have died now. Nigerians have done more than this.

The reason why Obj was no Mubarak is because Nigerians are not Egyptians. The Egyptians were living in total fear for 30 years, they cannot topple the govern't even in a coupe, demonstration or election. Our individual ambitions re sufficient to stop anybody becoming autocratic dictator.
Politics / Re: What Can Nigerians Learn From The Egyptian Uprising by Tsiya(m): 8:35pm On Feb 02, 2011
KoboJunkie,

Honestly, you have to give honour to whom it was due.

1. IBB was exactly like Mubarak only that he was faced with more opposition. The June 12 was worse than what is happening in Egypt. Don't forget, we had a Military President who banned numerous candidates from contesting election (Olu Falae, Adamu Ciroma, Yaradua), organised the election, and then cancelled the election. Nigerians turned against Nigerians because of the tactics employed by the government. The government was using the people to turn against each other.

2. During Abacha there were many many demonstration. Even in Kano, the home state of Abacha, there were numerous elections. Abubakar Rimi, Sule Lamido, Isiaku Ibrahim were all arrested in one their demonstrations against Abacha. In 1995 more thant 1000 people were killed in Bauchi for demonstrating during Abachas visit to the state. In Kaduna State, no one knows how many people were killed during the El Zazzaky uprising demonstrating against Abacha. In Kaduna between 1995 - 1998 more than 10 bombs exploded killing many people that were percieved to be against Abacha. The day Abacha died, Abdussalam released more than 300 hundred political prisoners. With the exception of Atiku and Solomon Lar, all the 34 founding fathers of PDP were political prisoners. There were so many demonstrations in Lagos. Do not belittle the sacrifices Nigerians made.

3. Obasanjo was no Mubarak, but he was a Mubarak in the making. Of course not all Nigerians demonstrated. But most of you didn't know what individual and ordinary Nigerians did. All Northern Senators that supported third term apart from Jibril Aminu, David Mark, Jonathan Zangina. Non could return to the Senate. The Senator that introduce the third term, Senator Hambada couldn't even campaign. Not only did he lost his senate seat, he lost his houses

Probably you need to watch the News. Even the Egyptians are now against each other. Probably Mubarak is learning from Abacha.

Nigerians have done this several times before. Egypt is learning from Nigeria

We had numerous protest during the June 12 election. One of the reason why IBB had to go. He became too unpopular and too risky for the army to support him.

We had numerous demonstration and rallies during Abacha, and fortunately God came to our aid before more blood shed from the dark google General and his cohorts.

We had demonstrated and stopped Obasanjo becoming like Mubarak. When it come to democracy, we have done our own share of fighting for our right.

Plateau is in the heart of Northern Nigeria not even in the central. Plateau state is sandwitch between Bauchi and Nasarawa States, both with large Hausa/Fulbe and muslim population.

If people think that the crises in Plateau state will precipitate to some form of agitation for secession of the middle belt from the North, they are wrong.

As far as Plateau crises, it is in the best interest of both the Muslims and Christains in Plateau states to bury their hatchets and find a permanent settlement to their problem. Yakubu Gowon knows that. Solomon Lar Knows that. Jonah Jang is just being myopic.

It is the southern journalist that fabricate stories and ascribe them to North. Who is Lawal Kaita? A man that cannot win election in his village is now a Northern Leader. Who is Adamu Ciroma? He is from Yobe state. Adamu Ciroma cannot deliver Yobe State to the PDP for the past 12. There isn't a single councillor in Yobe state from PDP. From the Senators, Reps, Gov, House Assembly, Local Gov't Chairmen are all ANPP. How can a person that cannot win election in his state become the Northern leader? Anytime I read Nigerian newspapers they make me sick. Simple investigation they won't do. They just sit down in the office and write conspiracy theories to defame and insult the people from the Northern Nigeria.

I do not like the unnecessary promises the President is making. He is a Nigerian, and he has every right to recontest for the presidency 4 years from now.

Nigeria: April Polls - Northern Leaders Rally Behind Buhari
Augustine Madu-West
22 January 2011

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kano — Sentiments being expressed by Northern leaders from the core Hausa-Fulani communities in the North West region indicate that the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, is now the new bride in that part of the country.

This may be due to the fact that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar lost the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s presidential primaries to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

Investigations conducted by Sunday Independent shows that most of the Northern leaders and supporters of Atiku have now pitched their tent with the General's group and have already embarked on a massive campaign to drum up support for him, regarding the April polls.

At the last count, there are no fewer that three known presidential candidates from the North: Buhari of CPC, Ibrahim Shekarau of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Nuhu Ribadu of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

We learnt that of all the three candidates for the presidency, Buhari is most favoured, largely because of his experience and age. Besides, he is considered a veteran of the presidential race, having contested twice (2003 and 2007) on the platform of the ANPP. His pedigree as the former Head of State and Minister are all considered as an advantage.

The North is still groaning over Atiku's defeat, and some of the leaders of the region have expressed their disappointment openly. "We have said it before that there is no way the North will accept a Southerner as president beyond 2011, because we still insist that going by PDP's zoning formula, the presidency of 2011 remains their (North) legitimate claim," said Second Republic governor of Old Kaduna State, Lawal Kaita.

He told our correspondent that since the North has been robbed of their chance by the PDP leadership, "we are now ready to queue behind the General and work towards his success in the April polls".

Another influential Northerner who expressed the same belief is Second Republic Senate president, Abubakar Dan Musa from Katsina, the General's home state.

"General Buhari is a man of integrity who has demonstrated his leadership qualities when he was at the helm of affairs in the country. During his tenure, the country witnessed economic prosperity and above all a peaceful atmosphere that promoted commerce and internal development."

I don't like the intention of this journalist. I took exception for the statement that the North is groaning because ATIKU lost election. The journalist have no respect for the PDP delegetes that voted for Jonathan. It is an insult to the whole people in the north to say we are groaning because Atiku has lost election. Why won't he just limit it to the supporters of Atiku not the Northern people.

The Northerners are truely democratic people, there were 4 other presidential candidates other than Atiku and they had their supports. This sensational news is meant to pit the southern Nigerians against northerners.

Beaf:

No one is asking you to be impressed that Aganga has spent practically his entire professional life in the UK; in zeroing in on that, you missed the whole point, which is that he is in a different culture from the one he is accustomed to and is like a fish out of water.
The senate confrontation only served to illusterate that further where people like Aganga would be found exchanging words or raising their voices over their dead bodies.

I'm not taking Aganga's side in this, just pointing something that might make him react in ways that are strange to the rest of us and which we might percieve in negative ways.

Missy85:

i agree with beaf. i worked in a top global consultancy firm, similar to goldman sachs where agagu worked. it's almost unheard of in that type of environment to hear people talk in loud voices let alone behave in anything but a supremely gentlemanly & professional way. because this guy does not have the bravado of the typical nigerian, most people think he's clueless, which is laughable. he will certainly struggle in the maddening nigerian political space, cos of his background. all in all, i am glad sanusi came in when he did. his decisive actions saved this economy from a calamity- i  genuinely believe that. sorry, i cant edit on my phone.

Actually both of you are missing the point. If Aganga is from the UK he must have been accustomed to watching the PM Question time and there is nothing like what he is showing. The purpose of getting someone from the diaspora is to come home with experience and transfer them back to the society.

Being an MD of Investment bank in UK, he must have had far grueling face-off with investors.

This is what we were expecting to see from him

i always thought this started & was always about resources - land, grazing rights & who contolled what. secondary in all of this.

These are all secondary issues created later. Land and grazing rights are not even a problem in Jos. There is sufficient fertile land in Plateau for all the people.

The main issue is the hatred the people have for each other caused by religious difference, economic empowerment, political aspirations, lack of justice.

@ Tsiya: Who would think that disgrunted Hausa/fulani will attack students? on second thots u have a point this wicked people kill 3month old babies and helpless women without qualms so students will be a walk in the park 4 them, This attitude is not  barbaric but animalistic. How can you broker peace with animals that donot need provocation to unleash unthinkable carnage. You dont broker peace with this lot you simply punish them (no one is above the law or has the right to take laws into his hands). Ok I accpt that the Hausa/fulani are angry that indigenes of Plateau state dont want the continued Hausa domination any longer (like the rest of Nigeria) but this is not a reason to make Jos a hell or ungovernable!!
If the peace and reconciliation you ascribe to is centered around the restoration of the desired status quo of Hausa domination, then this is far fetched cos nobody will be happy to oblige the Hausa and so they must leave the scene. The fire of violence they fuel and fan will eventually consume them. If you really have love for them beseech them to respect the sactity of Human life for their own good.
Leave FED.Govt out of this talk to the Hausa people. Govt has deployed securty operatives which is the most they can do. Even though the operative inherited by the government are agents and pawns of the animals as they are also murderers of children and innocents. If Govt has failed it is in the area of FEDERAL CHARACTER REPRESENTATION in the SECURITY OUTFITS in Nigeria. Unless you mean the F.Govt is failed cos it is not headed by Hausa.
I can discern that you wish the electorate in Plateau to be disenfranchised so as to allow for the imposition of a governmt that is not the wish of the people but of the architects of all these wicked confusion that will present the the opportunity for this scenario.

It is naivety to think that the only thing that Govt can do is to deploy security forces. The real issues and grievances have to be addressed. They have never being addressed. The crises didn't start today. They started 10 years ago and what did the government do? Just swept everything under the carpet and kept quite as if thousands of people were not killed.

The government has to provide some sense of justice, provide atmosphere where justice prevailed.

The idea that the somebody in Khaki and a gun will some all the crises in Jos is not going to work.

I didn't say by any means that peace and reconciliation should be about restoring the status core. The process will create what is justifiably the best for the people.

Look, in the real sense of things, most of these people in Plateau do not exactly know why they are killing themselves.

If you think Im accusing the present government because he is not hausa then you are wrong. I do not care who is at the helm of affairs provided he can provide justice, security and economic empowerment to Nigerians. Voting alone will nota solve people problems. An atmosphere that is not conducive for registration, normal business activities and life, is not an atmosphere for election
