Education / UNFPA Expands Initiative To Sokoto, Bauchi To Keep More Girls In School by tundemania: 2:23am On Oct 17, 2019
The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) has expanded the Adolescent Girl Initiative (AGI) to Sokoto and Bauchi States to keeps more girls in schools so that the key can harness their potentials.

Dr. Zubaida Abubakar, the National Programme Analyst, Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health and HIV, UNFPA Nigeria, disclosed this during a media roundtable on the 2019 International Day of the Girl Child on Wednesday in Abuja.

Abubakar reiterated the commitment of UNFPA to support young girls to harness their potentials through the Adolescent Girls Initiative which has ended in Kaduna and Kebbi states.

She added that the agency has supported over 14,000 children to remain in school in Kebbi and Kaduna states under the initiative.

She disclosed that the agency would open a new programme in Bauchi and Sokoto states which are the two states with the lowest number of students at primary and secondary schools.

She said there was another United Nations initiative that will support more children enrolment in school especially in northern Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that AGI was an initiative where girls are enrolled from primary to secondary school and financially supported to stay in school and empowered beyond the classroom.

In addition, the girls are enrolled in the UNFPA safe spaces where they are supported with extra numeracy and literacy classes, vocational skills, reproductive and child health information.

The initiative is not to only empower them to better perform in school but also in their adult life and Initiative was piloted in 2013 and resulted in a delay in child marriage for the girls by 2.5 years.

Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Dr. Ejike Orji, said the roundtable focused on the rights of the girl child as human rights, stressing that demographic crises fuels sexual and gender-based violence.

He said 70 per cent of Nigeria’s population was under the age of 30, this cohort is sexually active, they need food, love, and sex; if they don’t get it easily they take it by force.

He noted that the security agencies in the country were overwhelmed; stressing that every year `we add three million people on the national population and the resources are scarcely available”.

He, therefore, advised Nigerians to slow down the birth rate to enable the country to take care of its citizens adequately.

Orji said the violence was the outcome of demographic crises; a high rate of emigration, national harming nationals are major signs of demographic crises.

“The importance of this was to educate people on civility programme; we are not nice to each other, we must get back our country and ensure that the criminal justice system works.”

He urged parents to be friendlier with their children to build trust towards averting sexual and gender-based violence in Nigeria.

Nigeria does not need more laws and policies because it has laws and policies all that is required was to move from talk to the action.

He said the government has done a lot to ensure that Nigeria has adequate laws, policies, and guidelines what was left was the lack of investment towards ensuring that the policies are working.

He, therefore, said the programme was to bring attention to the issues affecting the girl child to ensure that they have access to education, good and quality healthcare and protection against sexual violence.

He added that the programme also aimed at ensuring that girls received the choice of whom to marry and when to marry as well ensure that space was provided for her to open up whenever her rights were infringed.

He said Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states in collaboration with the British Council and European Union support were conducting training for doctors and nurses on forensic medical examination and psycho-social support

Actress Kisa Gbekle has opened up on her sex life as she has, in an interview, disclosed she broke her virginity at age 12.

Kisa, 27, speaking on Zionfelix Uncut mentioned that life was not rosy during her childhood days – a situation which compelled her to date and sleep with men for money.

While revealing she’s dated five men, the actress, who appeared moody, said her past is nothing to be proud of, because she did quite a number of things she shouldn’t have.

She will, however, not be too hard on herself because there was no better alternative.

My exes are just five… and I broke my virginity when I was 12 years,” she said. “It was because of where I was coming from. I had to take things into my hands. I had a very bad background. My past is something I’m not too proud of.

When you’re from a very poor home, you do everything to make it in life. I started doing that to take care of myself, to pay my fees. I had dropped out of school. There was no money…

I didn’t even know my age. It was when I completed JSS before I got to know that I no even catch 20 years sef wey I do things plenty like that. I was dating these young guys from good homes in Volta Region.”

Asked if there has been an improvement in her life in terms of finances, she replied, I’m not broke, I’m not rich. If it’s boyfriend, I have; I don’t have. I don’t even know whether I’m dating or not.

In June, this year, rumours were rife Kisa was dating dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale. The speculations were fueled when both personalities flaunted each other’s pictures on their respective social media pages and responded to each other’s posts in a manner some thought was too suggestive.

Reacting to the rumours at the time, Kisa told Graphic Showbiz she was least perturbed about what people say. She however refused to confirm or deny her alleged amorous relationship with Shatta Wale.

She said, “What people say does not bother me at all, that is their opinion and at the right time, when the truth comes out, everyone will know and the tongues will stop wagging,

I do not have an answer to that as to whether we are dating or have dated or anything like that but all I can say is that, we are friends, he is like a brother to me and that is it.

I have seen lots of stories going round and the name calling has also been something else but I want to tell people that until Shatta Wale is married, he is single. So he is at liberty to date whoever he wants to be with so they should let him be.

Shatta Wale is not a child and knows what is good for him, he is also mature to make a choice when he wants to and knowing him, he would want to flaunt his woman when he gets her so people should just keep their cool and watch,” Kisa added.

Celebrities / Tiwa Savage To Headline Nigerian-lebanese Multicultural Concert by tundemania: 6:41pm On Sep 27, 2019
For the first time, the community that began with the arrival of the Lebanese Elias Khoury on the shores of Lagos in 1890 will be converging to celebrate their shared heritage in a multicultural concert.

Tagged ‘Live in Lagos: Music Hall’, the concert will aptly depict the fusion of both communities/cultures through music and entertainment.

Assembling the biggest female artist in the country, Tiwa Savage, and one of the biggest stars in the Lebanese-Armenian entertainment industry, Guy Manoukian will headline the concert while Bovi will be the host.

DJ Sose will also be bringing the party to the audience with premium Nigerian entertainment dipped in Lebanese flavors.

The ensemble is only fitting for an unprecedented show of this magnitude. The show only improves the union between both cultures and would appropriately depict the extent of the meld between Nigerians and the Lebanese migrants who have since become Nigerian-Lebanese.

Live in Lagos: Music Hall’ concert is slated for October 5.

US Rapper, Remy Ma has sparked an online outrage over her comment in which she said women who sue for money after being raped to prostitutes.

Remy Ma said this on the recent episode of Revolt’s State of the Culture in which she discussed the rape allegations against NFL player Antonio Brown with Joe Buden, Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins and attorney Eboni K. Williams.

This s**t sounds crazy to me,” Remy said. “Every time we here about [an alleged rape], it’s never like it happened this morning, yesterday, [or] over the weekend. It’s always five..seven years ago, this happened.”

It’s all about money because one of the accusers is asking for $2 million,” she said of Brown. If you raped me, my sister, my daughter, my anything, I don’t want your money, I want you castrated. The things that I want done are crimes.

Williams however countered her comment by saying that women who seek compensation might be using the money to pay for therapy and other things.

Could that be compensation though? Because I hear that a lot, ‘if it was a rape, first of all, why are you not going to criminal court? Why are you not going to the police and he’s not arrested?’ [Brown’s] first accuser went the civil route.

She filed a lawsuit, she’s asking for money, but some people feel like that’s the compensation that they want.”

“That’s called prostitution,” Remy replied.

It seem like in a lot of the alleged sexual assault cases, the women are asking for money,” Remy added. “To me, any exchange where sexual acts are being compensated with money, that’s prostitution.

Budden noted that prostitution involves consent to which Remy replied, “Really? In one instance they’ll be like ‘it was so horrible, he did this to me, but give me $2 million and I’ll go sit over there and I won’t tell anybody,

Politics / Pastor Tunde Bakare Cries Out Over High Rate Of Crime, Unemployment Under Buhari by tundemania: 6:00pm On Sep 27, 2019
Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly, has called for a total overhaul of the education system in the country to create the right quality of student graduates.

Bakare disclosed this on Friday to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Annual Goalkeepers meetings in New York.

According to him, the current system has huge implications on the economic development and life outcomes of young people, adding that the rate of unemployment and crime was currently on the high side.

He said education should be a priority of every government in order to address such challenges and reverse the ugly trend.

Bakare said: “In the past, when you are coming out from the university, there are regular jobs, car loan and other facilities that will keep you in the country.

Right now, because of lack of jobs, job creation has become a major issue. Our young people are now taking to crime and are benefiting from proceeds of crime and kidnapping.

But with the right policy in place, we can inject new ideas that will create jobs for our people.

I trust God that the right leadership will come. I call them a new breed without greed that will consider others and begin to create opportunities for us within our countries.

About 50 per cent of our youth are not employed and 25 per cent of them are not employable. So, there is something fundamentally wrong with our education system that is producing semi-illiterates.”

The pastor, therefore, called on the government to review the education curriculum among other things.

He said that Nigeria would need graduates better educated and able to cope and compete in the world.

Bakare also called on the current administration to introduce additional programmes that would address rising poverty and inequality in Nigeria.

NAN recalls that the 2018 Human Capital Index Report of the World Bank showed that an average child born in Nigeria will only be 34 per cent productive when he or she grows up after completing education and in good health.

According to the World Bank, children in Nigeria can expect to complete 8.2 years of pre-primary, primary and secondary school by age 18.

However, when years of schooling are adjusted for quality of learning, this is only equivalent to 4.2 years, showing a learning gap of four years.

Also, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2019 Inequality Report showed that the quality of education people receive differs depending on the state or local government area they live.

In Nigeria, the report showed that an average person in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State has more than 12 years in education whereas the average person in Garki, Jigawa State has only five years.

Obasanjo, who was in South Africa to launch a book he co-authored, met Ramaphosa and discussed the xenophobic attacks and other issues affecting the two countries.

Spokesperson for Ramaphosa, Khusela Diko, said the two leaders also used the opportunity to reflect on recent events in Africa.

The leaders engaged on misconceptions created about the situation in South Africa that gave the impression that Nigerian nationals in particular had been victimised.

No loss of life was reported among Nigerian nationals in South Africa during this period.

Former President Obasanjo expressed his sincere appreciation of President Ramaphosa’s recent appointment of a team of Special Envoys who have in the past few days visited a number of African states to deliver a message from the President regarding the incidents of violence.

Politics / Ondo: Akeredolu Accused Of Bribing Judges With 2019 Model Suvs by tundemania: 4:47pm On Sep 27, 2019
Senior Pastor of Awaiting The Second Coming Of Jesus Christ Gospel Church, Pastor Adewale Giwa, has faulted Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for purchasing brand new SUVs for judges in Ondo State.

Akeredolu had presented 16 brand new 2019 model Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs for the use the Chief Judge of the state and other judges.

Making the presentation on Wednesday in Akure, the state capital, the he said the gesture was to demonstrate his administration’s promise to create a conducive atmosphere to the workforce.

The vehicles were received by the Chief Judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Akeredolu, at the Government House, Alagbaka, Akure.

Reacting, Giwa in a statement on Friday, said the development was an “inducement” which had set a bad precedent.

He said: “It is very unnecessary and insulting to the Institution of the judiciary for a governor to be buying vehicles for judges who are financially independent.

Governor Akeredolu should have known better that under the Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Act, 2008, the judges are entitled to a car loan and other benefits.

The law lists such benefits as accommodation, utilities, domestic staff, entertainment, medical, security, furniture, personal assistance, motor vehicle loan, severance/gratuity and retirement benefits.

Others are leave allowance, motor vehicle maintenance and fuel, hardship, newspapers, estacode, duty tour, outfit and special assistant allowances and others.

When the basic salary, allowances and fringe benefits are computed, the CJN and other Justices of the Supreme Court receive a monthly salary of N480, 766.89 and N751, 000 in their bank accounts respectively.

For a governor to purchase vehicles for judges is uncalled for. What happens to the judges financial autonomy where this can be done? By the principles of separation of powers, each of them is supposed to be autonomous, the Judiciary, the Executive and the Legislature.

I totally disagree with Governor Akeredolu for what he has done, and this should be referred to as ‘inducement’. As it is, do you think a citizen can get justice against government in a society where government is purchasing vehicles for judges

When a Pastor speaks the truth to power, sympathizers and supporters of their political parties would tell that pastor to face his Ministry. Our role is to speak out against injustice and bad governance.

Most of the state governors don’t even bother following a due process while doing things, and this has contributed to the failed nation that we have today.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded a man, Ayobiojo Hammed, who was allegedly caught peddling marijuana at the Lagos Command of the National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Justice Sule Hassan kept Hammed, of 7, Moshalashi Street, Empire, Surulere, Lagos, in prison custody, following his plea of guilty to a one-count charge of unlawfully distributing 630 grammes of the narcotic drug.

He adjourned till October 11 for review of the facts of the case and sentencing.

Earlier, NDLEA prosecutor Fingere Dinneys alleged that Hammed was arrested on March 26, 2019, while distributing 630 grammes of the substance to some construction workers on the NDLEA’s premises, No. 4, Shaw Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

Politics / We Caught Headteachers Collecting Levies In Ogun Public Schools "Gov Abiodun’s" by tundemania: 9:24am On Sep 25, 2019
Some principals and headteachers who allegedly disobeyed Gov Dapo Abiodun’s order suspending the collection of levies or fees from pupils in Ogun State public schools have been caught in the act,

It was reported on Tuesday that “barely three days after Gov Abiodun ordered the suspension of the N3,700 Parents/Teachers Association levy, reports from parents across Ogun State have it that some schools started collecting levies first day of resumption.

The state government had said those caught would be dealt with by the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Abeokuta.

However, the Ogun State government, speaking through the Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Primary, Secondary and Technical Education, Ronke Soyombo, said there was still one percent non-compliance, adding that those who did not comply with the directive had been caught.

Soyombo, speaking on a phone-in Yoruba radio programmee in Abeokuta said, “when we say something, we all know there will be like 1% who will not comply.

Those who defied the order, we have been to their schools today (Tuesday) and we’ve caught all of them.

Those doing it secretly, they will be caught too and the Ministry of Education has a way to deal with such acts.

She added that the state government would provide running costs for all public schools so as to prevent any ‘urge’ for schools to demand levies from parents.

Soyombo, however, disclosed that if the Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) in any school had the desire to assist government with any project in the school, a letter must be written to government for approval.

The Governor’s aide reechoed that the state government did not authorise the sale of uniforms in schools, advising parents to buy same wherever they want.

Asked by a parent, Soyombo said she would not confirm at the moment, whether or not the free education policy of Abiodun involved the payment of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) fees, promising to revert back before Friday.

The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Agboola Ajayi has cleared the air over the alleged hostility between him and his boss, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

According to Ajayi who spoke while celebrating his 51st birthday at the Government House, Akure, the Ondo State capital, unknown to people even within the governor’s cabinet, he has the best working relationship with Akeredolu.

The Deputy Governor who further stressed that the sponsored media attacks on his person lately is expected, noted that the state is heading towards a political period, particularly with the governorship election coming up next year.

He described the move as unnecessary, pointing out that what God has destined cannot be rewritten by any human.

While calling for the continued support of everyone for the Akeredolu-led administration, Ajayi emphasized that the governor is down to earth with his primary aim to ensure that Ondo State is at par with the comity of industrialized states in the country.

All that is being written about me is expected. This is a political period where politicians get to hear all manner of cooked up stories.

Prior to the last governorship election in the state where my boss (Akeredolu) emerged, I told him (Akeredolu) that I will support him in any way possible. Initially, I don’t have interest until he picked me as his deputy.

I have served at the ward level, local government level, state level and at the federal level. So, there is nothing that I’m looking for that God has not done for me. I’m a fulfilled man.

Let’s continue to pray for the governor. It is not easy to lead a state. Even within one’s family, it is not easy.

Whenever I’m with him, his concern is always about Ondo State. All he wants is the greatness of Ondo State. Those that are very close to him, know him very well that he meant well for the state.

A lot of people are saying a lot of things about me and the governor. There is never a time I have been to him that he has refused my requests. He has never reduced anything allocated to my office.

All that is being said are fabrications, there’s no need to pay attention to such,” Ajayi said.

According to the ‘Hard Life’ rapper in a chat with E-Daily, the letter which was misinterpreted to have been a lawsuit was a mere letter notifying Ruggedman, 2Baba and Faze not to perform songs written by him for the band or any of the band’s song at Ruggedman’s forthcoming concert tagged ‘The Foundation Concert and Awards’, which has 2Baba and Faze as guest artistes.

Report has gone viral on the internet that I have sued 2Baba, Faze and Rugged man are mere propaganda.

I never said I was suing them for damaging the image of Plantashun Boiz. If they read the letter properly they would have had a proper understanding of what it says.

I only informed them that performing any of Platashun Boiz’s song at the said concert would amount to an infringement on my registered copyright.

However, the band, Platashun Boiz was not contracted for the show Ruggedman is currently promoting, so 2Baba or Faze shouldn’t go there and perform any song by the band because copyright over the songs belong to the band and not any individual”, he said.

When E-Daily reached out to Ruggedman on the matter, he said; “I have no comments on this matter at the moment because I’m busy planning my forthcoming show with positive-minded artistes.

Maybe in the nearest future, I may decide to talk about it; but for now, all my time and energy is channelled into planning my show.”

Education / Nigeria University To Develop Policy To Curb Sexual Harassment by tundemania: 3:05am On Aug 21, 2019
Following the rising spate of sexual crimes in Nigerian universities, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ogun State, is set to formulate a policy to put an end to sexual offences in tertiary institutions.

The policy, if effectively implemented, would curb the rising rate of sexual harassment and assaults, which is daily increasing in the country.

A visiting professor at TASUED's Centre for Human Rights and Gender Education, Stella Odebode, stated that the policy would help to “provide a safe and secured place void of harassment on students and by extension, on Nigerians at large”.

She stressed that the policy would create a committee, which would respond to cases of sexual and gender-based violence across Nigerian campuses.

She said, “The committee would be all inclusive because there would be students as representatives to ensure that the right thing is done.”

Executive Director of Gender Mobile, Omowumi Ogunrotimi, explained that formulating a sexual harassment policy in tertiary institutions is the most effective means to address sexual harassment in schools.

She noted that the policy would "help to create avenue for sexual victims to seek redress", adding that institutions would also be strengthened to provide a strong response to cases of sexual crimes.

A Nigerian who resides in Peterborough, a city in eastern England, was jailed for four years after 67 wraps of cocaine were recovered from his stomach.

The drug, with the average purity of 77.1 per cent, is estimated to have street value of £82,210.

Twenty-seven-year-old Samuel Nwankwo had swallowed 67 wraps of cocaine before taking a flight from Brazil to London, where he was caught.

As reported by Peterborough Telegraph, Nwankwo, who lived in Eastfield, Peterborough, was stopped by Border Police at Terminal 3 London Heathrow as he alighted from a Latam Airlines flight from Sao Paulo last February 11.

The paper reported that Nwankwo had been to Brazil for five days and had no checked baggage with him.

However, a body scan at the airport revealed suspicious shapes inside Nwankwo’s stomach.

He was then taken to a hospital for a CT scan, where dozens of concealed packages were identified inside him,” the medium reported.

On Friday, August 16, Nwankwo was jailed for four years at Isleworth Crown Court and the drugs were also ordered to be destroyed.

He had previously pleaded guilty to one-count of fraudulent evasion on the importation of a prohibited Class A drug,” reports said.

The cocaine found in Nwankwo equated to 67 swallower wraps with the average purity of 77.1 per cent. The estimated value of the amount he had was £82,210.

Politics / EL-ZAKZAKY: IMN Accuses Nigerian Government Of Concocting Assylum Story by tundemania: 5:53am On Aug 19, 2019
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) has accused the Federal Government of engaging in a campaign of calumny and concocting the story that its leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, had wanted to seek asylum in India before his return to Nigeria last Friday.

According to the group, the allegation was made by the government “to cover its own gross misconduct in a foreign land.”

This was stated by the President, Media Forum of the IMN, Ibrahim Musa in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, alleging that the FG went beyond its role of supervision to interfering in the medical process and dictating which doctors El-Zakzaky and his wife must see while refusing to allow them to access their own doctors at Medenta Hospital, New Delhi.

Musa also insisted that this confirmed the allegation that “the government had wanted to kill the IMN leader in the name of medical treatment.”

Musa added that before efforts at resolving the impasse could be concluded, El-Zakzaky was brought back to Nigeria, “since their evil schemes could not be executed.”

The IMN spokesman further revealed that El-Zakzaky refused to be subjected to any breach in the basic ethical principles guiding the medical treatment including respect for persons, protecting the autonomy of all people and treating them with courtesy and respecting and allowing for informed consent, which he said the FG had contracted medical personnel in the hospital to breach.

The statement read: “Being mindful of the government’s various previous plots to eliminate him since 2015, first through the barrels of the gun and much later through poisoning in detention while refusing him access to adequate medical care until the court’s intervention, the Sheikh sensed the government’s intention of inducing killer doctors to finish what they had earlier started, now through the back door.

“He therefore insisted on having the presence of the doctors that initially assessed him in Nigeria, who also worked in that hospital, failing which, he preferred to return to Nigeria.”

Arguing that El-Zakzaky would not have opted to return home if he had plans to seek assylum, the group added: “It is on record that it was the Sheikh who requested to be brought back home having been denied access to his doctors and rejected the killer squad engaged to treat him instead.
