Religion / Flee Sexual Temptation, Adeboye Warns Pastors by tundemania: 8:10am On Jul 07, 2019
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has contributed to the raging debate over the sexual immoralities being perpetrated by men of God in the light of the scandal that has engulfed the Senior Pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly, Abiodun Fatoyinbo, who was forced to step aside following several allegations of rape.

Adeboye, while delivering a sermon at the RCCG July Holy Ghost Service, said pastors must not take their anointing for granted by believing that they are above sin.

The pastor, who did not mention Fatoyinbo’s name also agreed with the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria that the body of Christ would not tolerate rapists among them.

Adeboye, who has been a preacher for over 40 years, noted that Samson, who was a judge in Israel, fell into sexual immorality despite the anointing over hm.

He said it was for this reason that he never had a female secretary to avoid falling into temptation.

The cleric noted that anyone who thinks he can commit a sin and it would remain hidden forever was only deceiving himself.

Adeboye said, “I don’t want to comment on some happenings. You know I have always told you when people ask me why I don’t talk. I say I am under authority. The Redeemed Christian Church of God belongs to CAN and we belong to the PFN and in CAN we have a president; at the PFN, we have a president.

“But I feel compelled to say some things. To those who are young and upcoming ministers of God, everything I will say will be from the Bible.”

He also warned that incessant shedding of blood might lead to a plague, urging the church to continue praying for a halt of bloodshed.

Adeboye stated that when the index case of Ebola was brought to Nigeria by Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer, the church was worried as its annual convention was drawing many people across the world at the time.

The cleric said he sought the face of God in prayers.

He said, “God would stop Ebola in Nigeria because Nigeria’s cup was not yet full.”

Sports / Scoring Against Lions Runs In My Family Blood – Okocha by tundemania: 8:03am On Jul 07, 2019
Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Okocha, on Saturday said scoring against Cameroon is something that runs in the Super Eagles.

Reacting to the Eagles 3-2 victory over Cameroon at the Alexandria Stadium in Egypt, Okocha who is a pundit with SuperSport, praised the team’s second half performance, while also heaping praises on his nephew, Alex Iwobi, who scored the winning goal.

“I think it is in the family now, it’s official that we (himself and Iwobi) love scoring against Cameroon. At 2004, I scored the equaliser against them and we went on to win the match 2-1. And today (Saturday), Alex got the winning goal and it looks like we have something against Cameroon in my family,” Okocha said.

Meanwhile, the Eagles legend also expressed his disappointment in the team’s defence and called for improvement in their next game.

“If a cross is coming like that, as a defender you have to focus on the striker because there is only one thing they can do, which is to put the ball in the net. You have to stay close to your man, be aware of where he is. His (Omeruo) positioning was very poor, but without mistakes there will be no goals. Ola Aina was still dwelling on the fact we just conceded a goal and couldn’t react quickly enough to stop the goal.”

The former Bolton captain in his overall assessment was very pleased with the second half performance of the Eagles despite going into the dressing room a goal down after the first 45 minutes.

He said, “This is the moment that I enjoyed because we didn’t just sit back and started defending. We went for it and started pressing because we wanted the winning goal and we got it. That’s what you get when have the players who have got the legs to support the attack. I have to credit the team because of their work rate off the ball.”

Politics / No Electoral Process Is Perfect, Says INEC Chairman by tundemania: 7:02am On Jun 25, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday advised its Electoral Officers who participated in the 2019 general elections to be tolerant of criticisms because no electoral process is perfect.

The commission told the EOs that while friends would criticise them, enemies would come with condemnation.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated these in Abuja during a review of the 2019 general elections with 387 EOs from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He said, “Anything (criticism) that anybody is going to say about the conduct of (2019) elections in Nigeria is secondary to the kind of information we are going to hear from those who truly conducted elections at the level that matters; at the level of the Polling Units.

“Where we should be criticised, I consistently say that friends will criticise you, but your enemies will condemn you. But criticism is the basis for making any system work.

“No democracy and no electoral process is perfect. Every democracy is work in progress.

“So, feel free to make suggestions on all the issues relating to the whole process of conducting elections. You have the protection of the chairman that whatever you say will not be used against you.”

Yakubu said despite all the difficulties witnessed, the commission registered over 14 million new voters within 18 months, due to the diligence of the EOs at the local government levels.

The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Planning, Monitoring and Strategy Committee, Dr Mustapha Lecky, said the 2019 general elections would not have been concluded until the submission, validation and publication of a report by the commission.

The report, according to him, is part of the commission’s responsibilities to Nigerians.

Lecky said the review was aimed at evaluating the conduct of the elections and learn vital lessons.

He added that the review will afford the commission the opportunity to review its policies and programmes which would serve as a roadmap to 2023 general elections.

He said, “Our primary job of conducting election, in this case the just concluded 2019 general elections, will not be deemed to have been completely concluded until a report of the 2019 general elections is submitted, validated and published as part of INEC accountability to Nigerians.

“This process is essentially a sort of SWOT analysis, involving identification of our strengths, performance, weaknesses or lapses, opportunities missed or taken, as well as impediments, bottlenecks and/or threats uncovered across all the processes before, during and the fallouts since the conduct of the 2019 general elections.

“The commission is aiming to be comprehensive in its attempts to review all the issues connected to the general election; from preparation through execution and its aftermath, hence the review timetable and schedule of activities has provided for consultations at multi-levels.

“The commission, over the past two weeks undertook state-level reviews, in each and every state of the federation. All the EOs present at this meeting were part of their respective states review exercise.

“Nevertheless, because of the very critical roles that EOs play in our elections, it was deemed fit to have a more focused discussion with them, with a slightly modified template to dig deeper with regards to certain issues.

“In addition, we feel there is value to be added by pairing EOs across states for them to share experiences and make more robust recommendations arising from this cross-fertilization of experiences and ideas.”

Business / 0CBN Plans Fresh Banks’ Recapitalisation As Capital Base Weakens By $3.5bn by tundemania: 6:53am On Jun 25, 2019
The depreciation of the naira between 2004 when the last banking sector recapitalisation took place and now has cut the value of the capital of each Deposit Money Bank by about $175m.

The recapitalisation of the banking sector, which was done in 2005, required the banks to raise their capital base from N2bn to N25bn.

The exercise then saw the emergence of 24 Deposit Money Banks following the merger of some of them as well as the acquisition of many that could not raise the required capital.

Speaking on Monday in Abuja during the unveiling of his economic agenda for the next five years, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, noted that the drop in the value of the naira to the dollar had weakened the capital of banks.

For instance, the apex bank boss recalled that in 2004 when the banks were last asked to recapitalise, the value of a dollar to the naira was about N100.

This, he explained, meant that the N25bn capital base of banks when translated into the dollar was about $250m.

However, due to the drop in the value of the nation’s currency which now exchanges for N360 to a dollar, the governor put the translated value of N25bn at just about $75m.

Going by this, it, therefore, means that the value of the capital of each bank had been reduced by $175m.

Based on the number of Deposit Money Banks in the country which stands at 20, the total value of the capital base may have been eroded by about $3.5bn.

Developmental role the apex bank would want the banks to play in the next five years, it had become imperative to demand their recapitalisation.

Following the announcement of the recapitalisation exercise, Emefiele said the Committee of Governors of the CBN would meet to discuss the new policy.

The meeting is expected to discuss modalities for the recapitalisation exercise as well as approve the framework that would guide the implementation of the policy.

The CBN governor said during the unveiling of his agenda for the next five years that the recapitalisation of banks had become imperative as their current capital could no longer finance large transactions.

He said, “In the next five years, we intend to pursue a programme of recapitalising the banking industry so as to position Nigerian banks among the top 500 in the world.

“Banks will, therefore, be required to maintain a higher level of capital, as well as liquid assets in order to reduce the impact of an economic crisis on the financial system.

“Recall that it was Governor (Chukwuma) Soludo in 2004 that did the last recapitalisation we had. He moved the capitalisation from N2bn to N25bn. And I must commend those efforts because it resulted in positioning Nigerian banks not only in Africa but among the top banks in the world in terms of capitalisation.

“It also helps to increase the banking industry’s capacity to take on large transactions. And those are some of the things we badly need today.

“So if you relate N25bn with 2004 exchange rate which was about N100 (to a dollar), N25bn was about $250m. Today, if you relate N25bn at N360 (to a dollar) you will see that it is substantially lower than $75m.

“So what we are trying to say is that the recapitalisation has weakened and there is a need for us to say it is time to recapitalise the banks again.

“It’s a policy thrust which would be discussed at the committee of governors’ meeting and of course, the framework for the recapitalisation of Nigerian banks would be unfolded for the whole world in due course.”

Commenting on the development, the President, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Dr Uche Olowu, said that there was no need for people to panic or have any fear about the financial system.

He said that the announcement of an intending capital increase in the banking sector was a welcome development.

“Ordinarily, in other climes, you continue to look at the risks that you will take because of the opportunities that you see in them. You ask them to recapitalise because of the opportunities that will come. We need to beef up the capital base.” he said.

He said that some banks were moving into the regional regions and needed to shore up their capital to beef up more confidence.

He stated, “Even with the latest International Financial Reporting Standard, it also affects capital. So it is important that they begin to address it based on their capital base.

“If you are raising your capital, it is based on the risk you are taking. Capital is a function of the business that you want to do. There is already a minimum capital, if you now feel you want to do more, it is a function of the risk you want to take.”

Providing more insights on his economic agenda which centred on five major priorities, the CBN governor said he would work closely with the fiscal authorities to achieve double-digit growth rate within the next five years.

He said during his second term in office, his first priority would be to ensure domestic macroeconomic and financial stability.

This, he said, would be followed by the need to foster the development of a robust payment system infrastructure that would increase access to finance for all Nigerians thereby raising the financial inclusion rate in the country.

The governor said his third priority would be to continue to work with Deposit Money Banks to improve access to credit for not only smallholder farmers and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, but also consumer credit and mortgage facilities for bank customers.

Emefiele said the CBN’s intervention support would also be extended to the youth population who possessed entrepreneurship skills in the creative industry.

During this intervention period, the apex bank boss said the CBN would encourage Deposit Money Banks to focus more on supporting the education sector.

On his fourth priority, he said the focus here would be to grow the country’s external reserves, adding that his fifth priority would be to support efforts at diversifying the economy through the CBN’s intervention programmes in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

“We are confident that when implemented, these measures will help to insulate our economy from potential shocks in the global economy.

“In my second term in office, part of my pledge is to work to the best of my abilities in fulfilling these objectives,” he added.

Speaking on strategies to achieving these priorities, Emefiele said the CBN would implement its agenda under various initiatives.

This, he noted, would enable the bank to achieve macroeconomic stability, exchange rate stability, financial system stability, financial inclusion, access to credit, lending to MSMEs, consumer credit and mortgage lending among others.

Macroeconomic stability

In the area of macroeconomic stability, the CBN governor said, “We intend to leverage monetary policy tools in supporting a low inflation environment while seeking to maintain stability in our exchange rate.

“As a result, decisions by the Monetary Policy Committee on inflation and interest rates will be dependent on insights generated from data on key economic variables.”

Working with other stakeholders, he said the bank intended to bring down the cost of food items, which had considerable weight in the Consumer Price Index basket.

He said, “Our ultimate objective is to anchor the public’s inflation expectation at single digit in the medium to long run.

“We believe a low and stable inflationary environment is essential to the growth of our economy because it will help support long term planning by individuals and businesses.

“It will also help to lower interest rates charged by banks to businesses thereby facilitating improved access to credit, and a corresponding growth in output and employment.”

Exchange rate stability

In achieving exchange rate stability, Emefiele said the apex bank would continue to operate a managed float exchange rate regime in order to reduce the impact which continuous volatility in the exchange rate could have on the economy.

He said, “We will support measures that will increase and diversify Nigeria’s exports base and ultimately help in shoring up our reserves.

“While the dynamics of global trade continues to evolve in advanced economies, Nigeria remains committed to a free trade regime that is mutually beneficial but particularly aimed at supporting our domestic industries and creating jobs on a mass scale for Nigerians.

“We intend to aggressively implement our N500bn facility aimed at supporting the growth of our non-oil exports, which will help to improve non-oil export earnings.”

He said the CBN would launch a Trade Monitoring System in October this year which is an automated system that would reduce the length of time required to process export documents from one week to one day.

Financial system stability

On financial system stability, the apex bank boss said the CBN would continue to improve its onsite and off-site supervision of all financial institutions, while leveraging data analytics and in-house experts across different sectors, to improve its ability to identify potential risks to the financial system as well as risks to individual banks.

Development finance

Emefiele said in keeping with the recent Presidential Directives, he intended to boost productivity growth through the provision of improved seedlings, as well as access to finance for rural farmers in the agricultural sector, across 10 different commodities namely rice, maize, cassava, cocoa, tomato, cotton, oil-palm, poultry, fish, and livestock/dairy.

“We believe these measures will help to boost not only our domestic outputs but also improve our annual non-oil exports receipts from $2bn in 2018 to $12bn by 2023,” he added.

Financial inclusion

In the area of financial inclusion, Emefiele said over the next five years, through initiatives and policy measures such as the Shared Agent Network and the payment service banks, he intended to broaden access to financial services to individuals in underserved parts of the country.

Crime / Father Defiles Two Daughters At Knifepoint by tundemania: 6:34pm On Jun 24, 2019
A father, Chukwuma Eze, accused of defiling his teenage daughters, has been remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons in Lagos on the orders of an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Eze, a resident of 2, Agbeke Close, Iyana-Era, Coker Bus stop, Ijanikin, Lagos, was arraigned on a two-count bordering on defilement before Justice Abiola Soladoye.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Mrs T. Olanrewaju-Daudu, told the court that the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with his two daughters, aged 16 and 17, several times between 2008 and 2017 at his residence.

The prosecutor said that the defendant started defiling the girls when they were seven and eight years old, after the death of their mother.

“Eze defiled the girls at knifepoint, threatening to stab them if they resisted him or told anyone,” she said.

Olarenwaju-Daudu said eight witnesses are scheduled to testify against Eze during the trial and requested that the defendant who attended Monday’s proceedings from home, be remanded in prison custody.

Granting the request of the prosecutor, Justice Soladoye ordered that Eze be remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons till Oct. 28, when the case will come up for trial.

NAN reports that the defendant, on hearing he was to be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons, broke down in tears and begged the court for mercy.

“I was in the police station since, please ma, I have children, some people have been taking care of them, I cannot run,” Eze tearfully told the court.

The prosecutor, however, interjected and said, “My lord, the alleged victims are these same children, he is the biological father of the girls.”

The offences contravene Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which stipulates life imprisonment.

Education / JAMB Calls For Embargo On Creation Of New Varsities by tundemania: 6:58am On Jun 24, 2019
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has called for an embargo on the creation of new public and private universities in the country.

The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, stated this, noting that emphasis should be placed on developing the existing universities in the country, which currently stand at 170.

According to the National Universities Commission, the country has 43 federal universities, 48 state universities and 79 private universities.

Oloyede made the call on Friday while speaking at the 4th convocation lecture of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State.

According to a weekly JAMB bulletin obtained on Sunday, Oloyede said there was the need to place the embargo on the establishment of new universities in Nigeria so that the country’s existing institutions could be adequately catered to.

He said, “Since education is everybody’s business, all Nigerians should support the effort towards educational development. Universities should not be established just to boost the ego of rich individuals and politicians.”

Oloyede reiterated the recommendations of the 2017 Presidential Retreat on Education which made a case for a declaration of a state of emergency on the education sector.

The registrar advocated increased funding of education in the country by committing nothing less than 15 per cent the national budget to the sector.

Celebrities / Tupac, Tom Petty Estates Among Group Suing Universal Over Fire by tundemania: 7:28pm On Jun 23, 2019
Estates of rapper Tupac Shakur and rocker Tom Petty are among a group seeking at least $100 million in damages from Universal Music Group after revelations that a 2008 fire allegedly torched precious master recordings.

The class action lawsuit filed just before the weekend is the first legal action lobbed at UMG since The New York Times published a bombshell investigation saying that a trove of some 500,000 recordings including masters were destroyed in the June 1, 2008 blaze.

Three law firms filed the suit in US Central District Court in Los Angeles on behalf of artists including Tupac and Petty’s estates along with members of the band Soundgarden, alt rock group Hole and folk-rocker Steve Earle.

“UMG stored the Master Recordings embodying Plaintiffs’ musical works in an inadequate, substandard storage warehouse located on the backlot of Universal Studios that was a known firetrap,” reads the filing.

The suit also alleges UMG “concealed the loss with false public statements” while pursuing a confidential settlement with its sister company, Universal Studios.

Citing the terms of their recording contracts the artists say they are entitled to at least half of that settlement, estimated to be worth at least $150 million, according to court documents.

“UMG concealed its massive recovery from plaintiffs, apparently hoping it could keep it all to itself by burying the truth in sealed court filings and a confidential settlement agreement,” the suit says.

The work of stars including Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Sonny and Cher, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Janet Jackson and Nirvana was reportedly engulfed in the flames.

Master recordings are one-of-a-kind source material used to create vinyls, CDs and digital copies, the loss of which would be particularly devastating for posthumous releases and lucrative reissues.

The head of Universal Lucian Grainge said the company owes artists “transparency” over the devastating fire, but in the wake of the Times expose the conglomerate has largely downplayed the losses.

“It happened 11 years ago and [recent] headlines are just noise,” Arnaud de Puyfontaine, the CEO of Vivendi, Universal’s parent company, told Variety.

French media titan Vivendi is currently seeking to sell 50 per cent of Universal, by far the world’s largest music company, a closely watched deal that de Puyfontaine said remains on track.

Politics / We’re Still After National Assembly Mace Snatchers — Police by tundemania: 10:20am On Jun 23, 2019
Fifteen months after two suspected thugs allegedly led by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege invaded the Senate chamber and snatched the mace, the police have yet to conclude their investigation into the incident.

Findings in Abuja indicated that the police had been treating the incident as a cold case, believing new information could lead to the indictment of the Deputy Senate President.

The force took Omo-Agege into custody shortly after the incident on April 18, 2018.

He was subsequently released while an investigation was launched into the theft which generated a national uproar.

The lawmaker representing Delta Central was consequently suspended by the Senate for 90 days, but he successfully challenged the resolution in court which ruled that the upper chamber had no powers to suspend him.

The mace was recovered under a flyover near Abuja city gate some hours later where it was abandoned.

Six suspects arrested in connection with the incident were released by the police.

Our correspondent learnt on Saturday that although the case file had been shelved, the investigation “has by no means died.”

A police source said, “The case was dropped because we are yet to apprehend all the thugs who stole the National Assembly’s symbol of authority. Although Omo-Agege was detained briefly in connection with the theft and released on personal recognition, the investigation has not ended or closed.

“It could be revived anytime we have fresh facts or information. So, it is wrong to say the Senator is out of the woods on account of his emergence as Deputy Senate President. We could invite him for interrogation when the need arises; he doesn’t have immunity from criminal prosecution.”

Another source said the testimony of the former Divisional Police Officer in the National Assembly, CSP Abdul Sulu-Gambari, indicting Omo-Agege and others, was part of the evidence linking the suspects to the incident.

Sulu-Gambari in his testimony on May 9 before the joint Senate and House of Representatives ad hoc committee set up to investigate the invasion of the Senate, blamed the incident on the conspiracy among some security agencies and lawmakers.

But Sulu-Gambari was redeployed to Adamawa State while the office of the DPO at National Assembly was placed under the Inspector-General of Police by then IG, Ibrahim Idris.

Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, did not respond to repeated phone calls for an update on the investigation into the mace theft on Saturday. He had yet to reply a text message sent to him on the matter as of the time of filing this report.

The Nigerian Air Force’s intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft has discovered a new camp of the Boko Haram terrorists in the Sambisa Forest region of Borno State.

The NAF aircraft, which located the camp on Sunday, thereafter called for an alpha jet to attack the buildings.

The air force said on Monday that scores of Boko Haram terrorists were killed in the bombings, while the structures in the new camp were also destroyed.

The NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said in a statement that the air force, operating “in concert with surface forces, would sustain efforts to completely degrade the terrorists in the North-East.”

Daramola said, “The operation was executed on Sunday after intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions revealed heavy presence of terrorists at a new camp. The camp, with several structures, was hidden under the thick foliage of the forest.

“Accordingly, NAF dispatched an alpha jet to attack the location. Its bombs hit the target area, with devastating effects on several of the camouflaged structures, neutralising the terrorist occupants.”

PSG supremo Nasser Al-Khelaifi has warned Neymar, Mbappe and rest of the squad ahead of next season ranting, “I won’t tolerate superstar behavior.”

The Qatari owned club are reportedly not happy with transfer rumours swirling around duo Neymar and Mbappe and feels both owe the club not vice-versa.

With Real Madrid and Barcelona watching on, Al-Khelaifi fired a warning to the club’s superstars.

“The players are going to have to assume their responsibilities even more than before,” Al-Khelaifi rapped.

“It has to be completely different. They will have to do more, work more. They are not here to have fun.

“And if they don’t agree with this point of view, the doors are open. Ciao!

“I no longer want to have superstar behaviour.”

In another development, Kylian Mbappe has threatened to follow Neymar out of PSG if the Brazil international is sold this summer.

RTL says Mbappe has told friends he won’t be hanging around should high level threats to sell Neymar be carried out.

The France striker sees Neymar as vital to PSG’s Champions League chances and has no interest in carrying the club on his shoulders should his senior teammate be sold.

Family / Pastor Ends Marriage Over Wife’s Refusal To Go For ‘deliverance’ by tundemania: 7:00pm On Jun 17, 2019
Pastor Omotilewa Oke, 44, on Monday, secured a divorce at an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, over his wife’s refusal to go for deliverance.

Oke said that his wife of six years, Shola, with whom he had two children, behaves in an irrational way.

“She fights me every day and also fights with neighbours over minor issues to the extent that people in our area know us for frequent fighting.

“I knew that something was wrong and I asked her to go for deliverance. When she refused, I stopped sleeping with her and eating her food because I don’t want any calamity to befall me.’’

The 44-year-old petitioner accused his wife of going out and coming in without his permission.

“Shola once told me she was going to Ekiti to collect her school certificate, and that she will not return that day but would spend the night at her aunt’s place.

“I told her to call me when she got there.

“She called to tell me that she had got to her aunt’s house, but when I asked her to give her aunt the phone so that I could greet her, she switched it off and I suspected a foul play.

“Shola has gone to many places, where she passed the night without my permission.’’

Oke prayed the court to terminate the union, saying he was no longer interested.

However, 37-year-old Shola, a civil servant, denied the allegations, saying that her husband was an ingrate.

“After I married my husband, I discovered that he does not have an Ordinary National Diploma as he made me believe.

“He did not even finish secondary school but I decided to stay in the marriage.

“He does not have a house of his own; my mother rented a two-bedroom apartment for us after our marriage.

“When I got pregnant and told him, he got angry, saying it was too early to get pregnant. He refused to give me money for antenatal care,’’ she said.

She told the court that when she had the baby, he refused to pay the medical bills.

“He did not participate in the christening of the baby, my parent sponsored it.

“I once advised him to be sending money to his mother, but he told me that he received a prophecy not to send money to her; I send money to his mother monthly from my meagre salary.

“Yet, he is ungrateful,’’ Shola said.

The mother of two added that her husband was irresponsible.

“He does not give me money for food but will want to eat. He has money but just refused to release it.

“When I got pregnant the second time, he asked me to abort it. He threatened that if I refused, I would have to care for the baby alone as he does not want any babies.

“Whenever the children are sick and I ask him for money to take them to hospital, he will say, `God will heal them’, and refuse to drop a dime.’’

The respondent said that her husband refused to pay their house rent when it expired and left the house for two years and also refused to pick her calls.

“When our rent expired, he refused to renew it, we were given a quit notice and my husband disappeared for two years.

“My children and I went to stay with my parents and when my parents rented another apartment for me, my husband came back.’’

Shola consented to the dissolution of the marriage, saying that she was also fed up.

The Court President, Mr Adeniyi Koledoye, held that the estranged couple was tired of the marriage and all efforts to reconcile them failed.

“Since both parties consented to the dissolution, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.

“The court hereby pronounces the marriage between Pastor Omotilewa Oke and Mrs Shola Oke dissolved today; both of you henceforth cease to be husband and wife.

“Each of you should go on his or her separate way unmolested; the court wishes both of you well in your future endeavours.

“The two children, who are minors, should be in their mother’s custody, while the petitioner must be paying N10, 000 monthly for their feeding and be responsible for their education and general welfare,’’ Koledoye said.

Politics / Days Of Bandits, Kidnappers, Insurgents Numbered –buhari by tundemania: 5:09am On Jun 16, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that the days of bandits, kidnappers and insurgents are numbered, insisting his administration will subdue them wherever they are in the country.

He gave the indication on Saturday in his address at the fourth convocation of the Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State.

The President, who is the Visitor to the university, said the war against bandits and kidnappers involved a lot of covert operations.

He said the current war against banditry and other forms of criminality would be won “not in the far future.”

Buhari, who was represented at the event by a former Kano State Deputy Governor, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, said, “I want to reassure the people of Katsina State and indeed all the other states of the federation that the climate of fear being orchestrated by bandits, kidnappers and insurgents would soon come to an end.

“We are bent on subduing the situation and creating the environment for the lawful citizens to go about their legitimate businesses without fear or molestation.”

Buhari also challenged universities in the country to come up with new strategies for generating revenue internally, pointing out that funding the institutions had posed a challenge.

He said, “The high cost of funding university activities cannot be borne by government alone. In this regard, I want to urge and encourage our universities to look inwards for more constructive ways of generating internal revenue through research that will attract research grants, establishment of consultancy services, poultry and fisheries farms, hotels, animal husbandry, partnering with the private sector.”

Meanwhile, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen Abayomi Olonisakin, has urged postgraduates in the country to focus their researches on the security challenges facing Nigeria and the possible ways out.

Olonisakin stated this, according to a statement on Saturday, while receiving some postgraduate students of Peace, Conflict and Strategic Studies of the Nile University of Nigeria at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The students were on a study tour of military establishments and institutions within the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The CDS, who was represented by the Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal Bello Garba, said the findings of their researches would facilitate tackling the security challenges and aid security agencies in combating the contemporary security threats.

The statement by acting Director, Defence Information, Col Onyema Nwachukwu, partly read, “The leader of the delegation, Prof. Gani Yorom, said the visit was aimed at acquainting the postgraduate students with key variables of the Defence and Strategic Studies, as well as broadening their knowledge and horizon on the structure and operational activities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

Slovak environmental lawyer, Zuzana Caputova was on Saturday sworn in as the EU member’s first female president, surprising observers with a speech that lacked the government criticism she was known for on the campaign trail.

The community activist, who ran on the slogan “Stand up to evil,” was largely unknown before she launched her presidential bid in the eurozone member nation of 5.4 million people.

The 45-year-old environmental lawyer won the March ballot with 58 per cent of the vote thanks in part to voter disillusionment with the governing coalition a year after the murder of an investigative journalist plunged the country into crisis.

“I did not come to rule, I came to serve citizens, and residents of Slovakia,” the liberal politician, who is pro-choice and promotes greater rights for same-sex couples, said in her inaugural speech in Bratislava.

“I offer expertise, I offer emotion and I offer a healthy activist approach. So I offer my mind, my heart and my hands,” she added alongside family, former presidents, politicians and members of her presidential campaign.

After the ceremony, Caputova walked to a nearby cathedral for an ecumenical service, shaking hands with people along the way, before hosting a lunch for seniors from across Slovakia.

Analysts called her inaugural speech surprisingly mild, given her past criticism of the government.

“The new president’s speech was non-confrontational. It was formulated positively, not attacking political opponents,” political analyst Juraj Marusiak told AFP.

Caputova “does not want to divide, she wants to unite. She talks about the common good, a common path, often using the word ‘we’.”

Caputova was among the tens of thousands of protesters who took to the streets after journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee were gunned down at home in February 2018.

Kuciak was about to publish a report on alleged ties between Slovak politicians and the Italian mafia.

The premier at the time, Robert Fico, was forced to resign but he remains the leader of the ruling Smer-SD party and is a close ally of current Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini.

In her speech, Caputova declared unequivocal support for Slovakia’s membership in the EU and NATO and also spoke out in favour of protecting the environment.

“The process of global climate change must be slowed down and reversed, otherwise it can have major consequences,” she said.

The Management of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekti has said that it has begun investigations into allegation of sexual misconduct involving one of its lecturers, Dr. O.O Aduwo.

Mr. Bode Olofinmuagun, the Head, Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs of the institution in a statement he signed in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, said that the university had also queried the lecturer concerned.

“The attention of the management of Ekiti State University has been drawn to a video that has gone viral on an alleged sex scandal involving one of our lecturers.

“The video allegedly fingered one Dr O. O. Aduwo of the Department of Accounting as the culprit and (a) query has been issued to the accused lecturer, to state his own side of the story.

“This will be followed by a panel which would dig deep into the matter,” he said.

Olofinmuagun said that university would not condone any act of sexual harassment in the University.

“And as such, it issued a query to the concerned lecturer to defend himself in the spirit of due process.

“Thereafter, a panel of investigation will be constituted to get to the root of the matter, while the findings of the panel will be made public.

“The general public is hereby assured that management will continue to be transparent and will not allow such a matter that could smear its good image to be swept under the carpet.”

The lecturer was allegedly caught pants down a couple of days ago, trying to have carnal knowledge of one of his students, (name withheld), as a condition for her to pass his course.
