The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth has honoured Fareedah Oyolola, a secondary school student at Greensprings School, Lagos, as one of the brightest students in the world.



This recognition is a result of her exceptional performance in the advanced School and College Ability Test (SCAT), which every student must undergo in order for the institution to determine their current academic abilities before admitting them into its talent search programme.

Sharing her experience about the test, Fareedah said: “The test was a multiple-choice aptitude test in verbal and quantitative reasoning, and I had to answer 100 questions within 44 minutes! At the end of the test, my score was in the 92nd percentile for verbal reasoning and 87th percentile for quantitative reasoning.

There’s no way I would have gotten these high scores with such a limited time window if not for the great work put in by my teachers, towards developing my comprehension abilities and mathematical reasoning skills. I am very grateful to them.”

In a statement issued by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, the Executive Director; Virginia Roach, congratulated Fareedah and other outstanding students across the world. She said, “We are thrilled to celebrate these students. In a year that was anything but ordinary, their love of learning shined through, and we are excited to help cultivate their growth as scholars and citizens throughout high school, college, and beyond.”

Mrs Magdalene Okrikri, the secondary school principal at Greensprings Anthony campus, also expressed her satisfaction with Fareedah’s honour. She said, “This honour brings great joy to my heart. Fareedah’s achievement is a testament that our Thinking School programme is rewarding to our students, helping them to develop mentally and strengthening their cognitive abilities.”
The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth is an initiative of Johns Hopkins University committed to nurturing extraordinary young minds. Its 2020 – 2021 programme draws nearly 19,000 students from 84 countries. Fareedah and other honourees from other countries are expected to attend a summer programme in the United States or Hong Kong.

Only for the news to break out that he has been arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for defrauding Unatrac Limited to the tune of $11 million.


If you convert that to Naira, at the rate of 360 Naira to a dollar, that’s over 4 billion Naira! The saddest thing about the whole situation is that the fraud happened under the nose of Unatrac Limited’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

15 illegal transactions within 8 days!

According to the affidavit released by Marshall Ward of FBI in supporting the arrest of Mr Obi, the illegal transactions were successful because the CFO fell for phishing. In case you are not aware, phishing is a hacking technique in which a hacker disguises as a staff of an account provider and persuades a targeted victim to click a link so as to resolve a problem with the account. The utmost aim is to steal the login details of the targeted victim.

Aside from falling for the phishing scam, it was also stated in the affidavit that Mr Obi and his accomplices changed the email settings of the CFO. Emails sent to the CFO from the members of the Finance Team were automatically marked as read and moved to a separate folder outside the inbox.

This means there was a slight change in the inbox settings of the CFO within the period; however, he didn’t notice. With all this information from the affidavit, it can be said that the CFO’s lack of cybersecurity knowledge cost his company millions of dollars.

If the CFO had been trained in cybersecurity, the situation might have been different. This is because, in cybersecurity classes, people are taught how to protect themselves from viruses, malware, phishing, and other online vices. If the CFO had attended a cybersecurity class, he would have known that the email sent to him was dubious.

He could have noticed the changes in his email inbox settings, too.

The lesson here for companies is that they should make cybersecurity training a must for their employees, both old and new. Besides, antivirus and antimalware should be installed on the companies’ servers, including the email servers.

Doing these would help prevent the case of identity theft and the stress of speaking to EFCC or FBI to help recoup your stolen money.

Reacting to the rising rate of suicides among youths, a counsellor, Ms Chinelo Nkennor, has said the power to put an end to suicides, in both young and old, lies with schools embracing 21st-century guidance and counselling methods.

She also said the time had come for parents to focus more on communicating with their children, just as school counsellors needed to go beyond career and academics guidance.

Nkennor, who is the Head of Counselling Services at Greensprings School, disclosed that children, who were sexually abused, had a tendency to feel guilty, which could lead to all sorts of expressions in trying to escape the traumatic experience.

The counsellor, in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, said, “The traumatic experience could result in substance abuse, depression and suicide. Different people express emotions in different ways. We see more of it when there are issues in the family, like divorce, conflict in the family, domestic violence. These make the children blame themselves and become very depressed.

“In addition, because of absent-parenting, when children are faced with crises, they do not know how to manage it because the people who were supposed to guide them were absent.

“These feelings can begin to manifest in their academic work. A child that has been abused cannot do well academically because the abuse would be eating up the child. Emotional sickness is worse than physical illness. Many people are emotionally wounded but no one sees it until it manifests in ‘bad’ behaviour. Until the person’s emotional injury is sufficiently treated, he or she cannot function fully in the society.”

The counsellor added that because mental illnesses could start as early as the preteen years and many people did not know the signs or the symptoms, it often went unnoticed. She also attributed the rising rate of depression and suicides to the advent of the social media.

On the need to maintain good mental health in children, Nkennor advised, “Parents should listen more, be open-minded, be slow to judge others and provide solutions. Do not try to treat the behaviour; rather get to the root of the thought feeding the behaviour. You can alter their negative thought pattern by interacting with the child.

“Through play, children can be more equipped to withstand the pressure of life. Allow children to experience life. Saying no to them does not make you a bad parent. It is not wrong for a child to feel bad when you don’t let them have what they want. They need self-control and that comes when a parent says no.

“Parents have to give children the ability to withstand peer-pressure by involving them in tasks around the house to enable them to become more responsible. Being involved gives them a sense of self-worth. Those little things are put together to form the whole child. A child can win points and win things that would motivate them after doing something well. Look at what the child values at that point in life and use it as an incentive to reward the child,” she submitted.

If you are like many Windows computer users, you are likely to have WinRAR installed. The app is very handy, and millions of people use it to extract ZIP and RAR files. As a reputable software, we all assumed that the app is safe, until when it was revealed last month that there’s a bug in the app’s UNACEV2.DLL library, and the bug has been in the app for 19 years.



With the bug, it is reported that hackers can extract malicious software in victims’ startup folders, and the malicious software will fire when the computer is restarted. McAfee, the renowned antivirus company, made it clear that beyond extracting malicious software in the computer’s startup folder, the bug can also allow hackers to launch over 100 different hacking attacks.

Below is what the maker of the compression software has to say about the bug.

"WinRAR has always been known for its wide support of all popular compression formats. A recent report by Check Point Software revealed a potential security vulnerability in the UNACEV2.DLL library, which was used in former versions of WinRAR to decompress ACE archives. There haven’t been any reported attacks so far, but to provide WinRAR users with a stable and clean version, the final version of WinRAR 5.70 has been released. Since UNACEV2.DLL had not been updated since 2005 and access to its source code is not available, the decision was made to drop ACE archive support starting with WinRAR 5.70.

Now, after the launch of the final and stable version of WinRAR 5.70, upgrading immediately to the new 5.70 version is highly recommended. To users who are not interested in an upgrade or who don’t find a localized version of WinRAR 5.70 yet, win.rar GmbH’s advice is to delete the UNACEV2.DLL file from their current WinRAR version to be reliably protected again. All users of WinRAR 5.10 or any newer version can find the UNACEV2.DLL file in the WinRAR program folder. WinRAR users of versions older than 5.10, can find the UNACEV2.DLL file in the Formats subfolder of the WinRAR program."

From what the maker of WinRAR has stated, it can be concluded that to be safe, everybody that uses a Windows computer and has the app installed must upgrade it now. If not, hackers might start exploring the loopholes and start launching attacks.

Lots of crazy gadgets have been unveiled in the MWC 2019, but nobody even thought that a company would unveil a phone with 18,000mAh battery capacity. The phone, which goes by the name Energizer Power Max P18K Pop, is made by the French company Avenir Telecom, and it is 18mm thick.



In comparison with the thickness of an iPhone, the Energizer Power Max P18K Pop is said to be as thick as 3 and a half iPhones placed on one another. And because the buck of the body of the phone is made of the large battery, some reviewers of the device have decided to call it a battery with a phone, instead of a phone with a big battery. Personally, I call it a “power bank with a phone.”

According to the manufacturer of the phone, Energizer Power Max P18K Pop is expected to be able to work for a week without recharging, if the phone is used to run regular apps. If the phone is used to watch videos, it is estimated to be able to never run out of power for continuous video watching for two days.

At the screen end of the phone, there is a 6.2-inch LCD display, which carries small bezels. The phone has two cameras in the front, and three at the back. The processor, RAM, internal storage, and operating system are MediaTek, 6GB, 128GB, and Android 9 respectively.

It is no more news that Google is working on another operating system (OS) called Fuchsia. According to rumours, the OS would be a synergy of the Chrome OS and the Android OS, but nobody knows how true that is – until yesterday.



Members of a website called 9to5Google claimed that while reading the latest Android’s source code, they saw an indication that points out that Android apps would run on the Fuchsia OS. They said on a thorough reading of the readme file of the Android’s source code, a post says “These targets are used to build ART for Fuchsia. They differ from usual Android devices as they do not target specific hardware. They will produce a fuchsia package (.far file).”

From the post in the readme file, it was concluded that the Fuchsia OS will get its own equivalent of Android Runtime, and therefore, be able to run Android apps. The OS would also be able to run on other hardware – besides Android devices.

As 2019 progresses, we hope to get more information about the Fuchsia OS.

Have You Seen The World’s First Phone With Two Notches?

Having a notch at the top is the new trendy design in the smartphone industry, and the notch is always one. However, that has changed with the launch of Aquos R2 Compact, an Android phone with two notches, by Sharp.

This means Sharp is the first OEM to use the support for two notches on Android phone, after Google announced back in May that it’s going to be upgrading the Android operating system to support two notches.

Against how most people think the notches would be placed on the phone, which is being placed at the top, the two notches are place at top and bottom. One of the notches is located at the top-middle, while the other is located at the bottom-middle.

And as expected, the top notch houses the front camera of the Aquos R2 Compact and other important sensors that come with phone. The bottom notch, however, only houses the fingerprint scanner.

Other Specs of Sharp Aquos R2 Compact

The screen of the phone measures 5.2-inches, has Full HD+ display, and its resolution is 2280×1080 pixels. In the innards of the Sharp Aquos R2 compact are its octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, its 4GB RAM chip, and its 64GB internal storage chip. There is a support for microSD card, up to 512GB.

As for the phone’s operating system, it is the Android 9.0 Pie. The battery of the phone isn’t impressive, thought, as its capacity is at 2,500mAh. But the battery supports Quick Charge 3.0.

The Sharp Aquos R2 Compact’s back camera gets a 22.6-megapixel sensor with f/1.9 and optical image stabilisation. Its front gets an 8-megapixel sensor with aperture of f/2.2. The body dimension is 131×64×9.3mm and the weight is 135 grams.

In terms of colours, the phone would be available in Smokey Green, Deep White and Pure Black.

Towards the ending of September, Facebook announced that hackers have accessed the accounts of over 50 million users. Out of the 50 million users whose accounts were breached, 30 million were later confirmed to be the ones whose access tokens were stolen.

According to reports, the usernames and passwords of users weren’t stolen by the hackers; what were stolen were users’ personal data, such as name, contact information, demographic details, hometown, birthdate, and details of other friends.

So, to be seen as transparent and to help the affected users be aware of their vulnerability, Facebook has revealed a way that all the users of the social network can know if their accounts were among the hacked. Here is how to check if your Facebook account was hacked in the recent data breach.

How to Know If Your Facebook Account Was Hacked

* Login to your Facebook account and navigate to the Facebook Help Center

* On the Help Center, scroll down to the bottom until you see the section named “Is my Facebook account impacted by this security issue.”

* On getting to that section, Facebook will tell you Yes or No.

If the answer is Yes on your account, it means you are a victim of the recent hack. Facebook would then tell you the particular information that the hackers stole from your account. The people affected by the hack have been categorized into three. The first category of people are the people their name and contact information were stolen. You shouldn’t worry much if Facebook says you are among this category.

As for the second category, aside from their names and contact information, other personal details such as their username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, device types used to access Facebook, education, work, the last 10 places they checked into or were tagged in, website, people or Pages they follow, and the 15 most recent searches were stolen. If you are into this group, keep a tab on your financial and banking transactions to ensure a third-party does not access them.

We all know Google owns the Android OS, but because the OS is open source, anybody can wake up one day and start manufacturing and selling Android phones. Google is aware of this, so it put in place an Android Device Certification programme, called Google Mobile Services (GMS).

The aim of the programme is to ensure all Android phone manufacturers follow a strict Android security and permissions model – and to ensure a level of durability of Android devices. Also, the Android Device Certification programme grants Android phone manufacturers the access to pre-installing the Google Apps package – which contains Google Play Store, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, etc.

Most importantly, certified Android phones by Google are protected by Google Play Protect, which helps protect against malware, virus, and hacks.

However, even though Google has this certification programme in place, some Android phone manufacturers circumvented it and decided not to join the programme. They just manufacture their own Android phones and start selling, leading to the release of substandard and uncertified Android phones.

To counter these manufacturers that didn’t join the GMS programme, Google has, in recent time, started blocking uncertified Android phones. The uncertified phones are blocked from accessing Google Play Store and other Google apps. Google is doing this in order to enforce its Android Device Certification programme and to make sure all Android phone manufacturers comply.

Now that you have known that Android phones are ought to be certified by Google, how do you know if yours is certified or not? This post will show you how to do that.

How to Know If Your Android Device is Certified by Google

First and foremost, if your Android phone is made by reputable Android phone makers like Samsung, HTC, Huawei, Xiaomi – and Google itself (if you use a Google’s Pixel phone), you don’t have anything to worry about. It is those that use cheap Android phones from Chinese makers that have to worry about whether their phone is certified by Google or not.

So if you want to know if your phone is certified, you have two ways you can do that. You can check if your Android phone is certified by Google by checking the Android certification status on the Google Store app on your phone. Or by downloading the latest copy of the Google’s Supported Android Devices document – and search for the name and model number of your phone.

Know if Your Phone is Certified through Play Store

To know if your Android phone manufacturer passed through the Google’s Android Device Certification programme and if your device is certified through Play Store, follow these steps.

*Launch your Google Play Store app

* Tap on the hamburger icon – towards the top-left corner

* Scroll until you see Settings, and tap on it

* On the Settings page, scroll to the About section and look out for Device certification. If your device isn’t certified by Google, you would see Uncertified; if it is certified, you would see Certified.



The above steps are useful if you had already bought the Android phone and want to know if it was certified by Google.

Imagine, you are buying a new Android phone. A new Android phone must be set up for a first-time use before you can access any app include the Google Play Store. Do you think the phone seller would allow you to run the first-time use set up and check if the phone is certified through the Play Store?

I don’t think so. Most phone sellers only allow people that have paid to power on the phone and run the first-time use set up. This is why the Google’s Supported Android Devices document is useful.

Google keeps and populates the list of all the Android phones it has certified in the document. Within weeks that a new, certified Android phone is released into the market, Google adds its name and model number to the Supported Android Devices document.

So before you buy a new Android phone, it is advisable you download the document and check if the new phone you want to buy is certified or not. Here is how to know if your (or a new) Android phone is certified by Google through the Supported Android Devices document.

Know if Your Phone is Certified through Supported Android Devices Document

* The document is hosted on the Google’s Supported Devices page (https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/1727131?hl=en). Download it

* One the page, locate the section titled Full list of supported devices

* Click on View as PDF – to download the document in PDF; click on View as CSV, if you want it in an Excel spreadsheet

From my experience, the PDF version is better – it turned out that searching for the names and models of Android phones is easier in the PDF format than the CSV format.

* Open the PDF or CSV document, and you will see a long list of the names of all certified Android phones by Google since the inception of the OS.

The list has four columns namely Retail Branding, Marketing Name, Device, and Model.

* Now, press Control F on your keyword to bring out the search box

* Type in the Model Number of the phone if you know it. If you don’t know it, type in the Marketing Name (i.e, the name you heard in the phone’s advertisements; it is also the name tech blogs call it in the “specs and price” blog posts).

If the Android phone is certified by Google, you would see it in the document. If you don’t see it, it is either the phone is very, very, very new or it’s not certified by Google. If you are sure the new phone has been released into the market going to one month, but you couldn't see it on the list, no two ways about it – the phone isn’t certified by Google.

At the time of the publication of this article, Tecno Camon X is one of the newly released Android phones in the Nigerian Android market, and it is already on the list.



AfriOne Gravity Z1 is not on the list

Early last year, AfriOne Gravity Z1 was released and was purported to be the first made-in-Nigeria smartphone. One checking the Google’s Supported Android Devices document, neither the phone maker’s name nor the device name was on the list.

The Google’s Supported Android Devices document has its list arranged in an alphabetical order, and after Affix, it was AfriOne that ought to follow. Instead, it was Aikun that follows. That appears surprising as the phone has been launched more than a year ago.



Anyways, now you know how to check if your Android phone is certified by Google.

It’s worth saying that the Supported Android Devices document not only keep the list of certified Android phones, but it also keeps the list of certified Android tablets and phablets. So whether you are buying a new Android phone, tablet, or phablet, check the document to confirm its certification by Google.

Also, the document only keeps the main names and models of certified Android phones. If a phone is available in two or more variants, you would only see one name and model number for the phone. For example, the Tecno Camon X is available in two variants; the standard Camon X and Camon X Pro. When you check the document, you would only see Tecno Camon X -- it represents the two variants.

Buy wisely. Buy certified.

A satellite phone is any phone that can connect to telecommunication satellites so as to receive a network for call and data transfer. Before, all satellite phones are “unsmart” (I mean they are feature phones, which could only be used for calling and sending SMS). But now – all thank to Thuraya Telecommunication – the world now has a satellite Android phone.

The satellite Android phone, called Thuraya X5-Touch, was launched at a Dubai conference a couple of days ago, and as you would have expected, the phone isn’t the kind of phone for everybody; it’s for the people always travelling to remote areas out of network coverage.

Even though the phone can connect to satellites to make calls, send SMS, and browse everywhere in the world, Thuraya still went ahead and made the X5-Touch to support a normal SIM.



So owners can switch between a satellite connection and a standard GSM connection. It first broke out in the news that Cambridge Analytica, a political research firm, stole the data of 50 million Facebook users. The number has been upped in recent week, mounting to 87 million, and in response to the data breach, Facebook has planned to notify its users whose data were mined.

The social network will be pushing a privacy settings notification to its 2.2 billion users, and through the notification, you would be able to determine if you were affected by the data breach. The notification would come in two different forms; see the image below for reference.



The notification on the left with GO TO APPS AND WEBSITES is what you would receive if you aren't affected by the data breach. However, If Cambridge Analytica were able to extract your Facebook data, you would see the notification in the image on the right hand. Tap on the option that says SEE HOW YOU'RE AFFECTED to see the amount of your data carted away by Cambridge Analytica.

As I had stated in my post on how to stop Facebook from tracking your online activities, Cambridge Analytica wasn't the only firm stealing Facebook users data. In fact, Facebook has uncovered more firms involved in the act and has banned CubeYou and AggregateIQ, which are as well analytical companies.

According to reports, the countries most affected by this Facebook data breach are the United States, the United Kingdom, Indonesia and the Philippines. Only little data were scooped from Africa and other countries; however, whether you live in the main affected countries or not, it is advisable you update your privacy settings when you get either of the notifications.

Doing that would help protect your Facebook data against future occurrence.

Job Description

* Taking client's measurement.
* Assist with sourcing for fabrics.
* Cutting and sewing garments.
* Work alongside with the pattern maker.
