I am liking the way the Internet giants now allow us to have a sniff of what they really think of us. A couple of months ago, I published an article on how to know what google knows about you. In the article, I showed how you can retrieve all data Google has collected about your on line behaviour and how to manage the collected data.

Now, it’s time to look into Facebook’s “mind” and know what it thinks of you.

To do this, we will be exploring a feature called Facebook Adpreference. So fasten your seat belt as I take you through the journey of knowing what Facebook thinks of you.

Using Facebook Adpreference To Know What Facebook Thinks of You

In my exploration of Facebook adpreference, I discovered that Facebook web version loads the page ceaselessly. For this reason, I recommend using a phone to access the page; better still you can open Facebook mobile on Google Chrome or Opera browser for PC.

In this tutorial, I used Chrome browser and the steps are as follow:

On clicking on More, you will see the categories in which your interests are organized into.



* Click each interest category to see what Facebook thinks of you in each category.

To know what Facebook thinks of your behavior and character, I recommend you spend time with hobbies and activities category, and most importantly, with the lifestyle and culture category. You will be amazed at how Facebook’s algorithm has analyzed your behaviours on Facebook and turn it into weapon for serving you the kind of ads you see in your account.

Under my hobbies and activities category, I saw things like global warming, biodiversity, Ecotourism and other environmental related issue. I was marveled to see those areas of expertise—and of course, I care about environmental sustainability.

On checking the lifestyle and culture category, what I saw was very surprising. Even though I set political view in my profile to indifferent, Facebook believes I love politics and have interest in the two big parties in Nigeria. The names of the two popular parties in Nigeria are listed in my lifestyle and culture category.

If you see the name of only party, it means you a passionate supporter of that party. In my case, Facebook believes I love the two parties equally. And I have begun to think I really love the two. My indifferent has matured to impartial.

Removing Ad Preference

If you see something under any category and you want to remove it, all you need to do is to click on the particular category, then scroll to the interest. Click on the three dots beside the interest and click on remove.

Knowing what Facebook thinks of you is as simple as that; if you think Facebook is wrong about you, follow the steps above to remove the particular interest.

In all, don’t forget that the main purpose of ad preference is for Facebook to better serve relevant Ads.

Facebook is really determined to connect our world. * Then double click on Defragment and Optimize Drives

* Launching the tool will open a Window named Optimize Drives, and a list of all virtual drives, both internal and external, will be displayed in a box.



Analyzing and Optimizing Your Drive

* Click on (C, then on Analyze; in my case, 3% of my disk volume is fragmented.



* After analyzing, then click on Optimize.

Clicking the optimize button will start the optimization process, and to be sincere with you, this process takes a lot of time to compete, depending on the level of fragmentation in your hard drive. So I recommend hibernating your computer when the power gets low and later continue when next you have power, or better still, do it overnight.

How Often Should I Optimize My Drive?

Personally, I recommend you do this process every three months, so as to reduce the rate of fragmentation of your files and to save time required in defragmentation.

By following these steps in details, the performance of your computer should improve, but if it doesn't, It means replacing the drive maybe the best way to boost its speed; an alternative option is to increasing your RAM to see if there will be improvement. When there is no improvement after increasing your RAM, then the best option is your only option.

By default, Readability Statistics is not enabled on MS Word, so you have to enable it. So following the steps below to enable it

• Open the Word document you want to check its readability.

• Click on File to go to the Microsoft Word Backstage.

• At the Backstage, Click Options.

• Click on Proof Reading Tab.

• Locate the segment named When correcting spelling and grammar in Word.

• Check the options: Check grammar with spelling and Show readability statistics.

• Click OK to close the dialogue box.



Getting the Readability Statistics

• Go to the Review Tab on your MS Word.

• Click on Spelling and Grammar. This will bring out a box at the right-hand side of the document, and this box will show list of words MS Word assumes are incorrect. You can either click ignore to ignore corrections or click change to change to the correct suggested words. This step will continue until you correct or ignore all grammar errors.

• After spelling and grammar correction, a dialogue box will pop up to tell you that you’re good to go.

• Click OK to see the Readability Statistics of your document.

Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: This is used to measure the grade or level of education of someone that can easily read a document. So if you are writing a document for secondary school level and you run readability statistics which gives you result of university graduate. It simply means you might need to simplify your grammar and sentence complexity.

Our case-study document has a 10.7 grade: meaning a senior secondary school student and above should be able to read and understand the message that the document is trying to pass.

When you weigh the importance of feedback this readability statistics gives on your MS Word document, I believe you wouldn’t want to send out any document to a reader without checking the reader’s point of easy digestion of your sentences.

Well I am not a linguist but I will advise you not use this sentence on your career objective or summary.
First, the sentence is unclear; second, this statement does not hold value again to HR. They have seen it million times.

When the thought “Internet” comes to our mind, one of the top 5 things that follows the thought is the brand Google.

This is because Google has gone places and made its name in the digital word; billions of people use Google services allover the world everyday.

If you are not using GMail, you will use YouTube; If you run from YouTube, then what about your Android phone?

Okay! you may still somehow avoid all what I listed above, but I am sure you will find it very hard not to use Google Search, unless you live in China, Russia or North Korea.

However, since you are reading this my post, there are chances that you do not live in any of the three countries; making it a possibility for Google to have stored a lot of data about you.

Moreover, It is worth noting that data about you which are stored by Google are not meant for evil or bad purposes; at least, Google’s slogan is Don’t Be Evil. Hence, your data is just for analysis in order to sell ads to you.

Steps to Monitoring Your Online Track
• In your browser, visit https://myactivity.google.com/myactivity.

• If you are required to login, then login using your GMail Account.

• After logging in, the first page you would see is your YouTube history which would be staring at you.

This page would show your YouTube search history as well as the videos you have watched.

If you want to get really deep into knowing what Google knows about you, then do the following:

• Click on the three vertical dots at the top right corner of the MY ACTIVITIES page. It would display all available settings.
• Click on Activity Controls.

The Activity Controls page would show you all what Google can track about you. These include
Web and App Activity
Device Information
Location
Voice and Audio etc.

By Clicking on the Manage Activity link, you would be able to pause or resume data collection about your activity online.

Note that pausing an activity on MY ACTIVITY page does not mean Google would stop collecting data about your online activities, It will only limit the data collection algorithms.

The dicey thing about this my activity page is that Google want it to also serve as a medium by which it can understand you and better provide relevant information to you. But I have a mixed feeling about this; who on earth really want put all his or her online track in the hand of any organization that might hand it over to the government one day.
