Politics / When will Sub-Saharan Africa be on par with first world countries? by tunku(m): 2:01am On Nov 06, 2005 |
It took Japan just fifty or so years to modernize its island and rival most of the anglo-european world. Do you guys think that there will come a day when we have a functional government, a society that distribute wealths across the board and relative stability? I just want a ball park figure. I think this can be done in three hundred years, what about you? |
TV/Movies / Re: Americans Don't Watch Nigerian Movies? by tunku(m): 1:47am On Nov 06, 2005 |
I agree with a lot of what wishengard says about the Nigerian Film industry. The only reason the films are selling like hotcakes is because of the immigrant community abroad. Why isn't anyone daring to be Great? India has a strong movie industry that has gained legitimacy with people outside of India. hell it even penetrates africa, yet all that is being pushed out of Nigeria are subpar movies that are second rate at their best. |
Romance / Re: Why Are Nigerian Men Romantically Challenged? by tunku(m): 1:29am On Nov 06, 2005 |
I would sweep you off your feet with the poetry of John Donne, but then I have to break down the poetry so you can understand it. After the hour of reciting the poem, breaking it down, looking in the dictionary to see what valediction means. I promise you, that you will be swept off your feet. |

Literature / Re: What Shakespeare Book Thrills You Most? by tunku(m): 11:41pm On Oct 29, 2005 |
Have you guys ever wondered why you are forced to read Shakespeare's play? is it because of the language? because no one is speaking in the vernacular that shakespeare wrote in anymore this day and age? I have read a couple of Shakespeare's plays and I chuckled at his bawdy language at times, but its so old and esoteric that it detracts from the largely inane and uninspired plots. Shakespeare might have been a brilliant playwright but I swear to god that I will never read another one of his play again. Hell my class is reading othello and so far I have bullshitted my way through most of the discussions about that play without having read it through. In short I think shakespeare is an overrated hack that is fueled by the pretenses of faux academians thinking they are smart because they can read the esoteric works of shakespeare. While in reality its nothing much more spectacular that the drivel that dinner theaters churns out on a daily basis. |
Crime / Re: This is Barbaric! 11 Year Old Set Ablaze in Lagos. God Have Mercy on Us. by tunku(m): 11:12pm On Oct 29, 2005 |
hot angel why did you say someone should have called 911? that just seem just downright ignorant to me. |
Crime / Re: This is Barbaric! 11 Year Old Set Ablaze in Lagos. God Have Mercy on Us. by tunku(m): 11:04pm On Oct 29, 2005 |
This is a tragic turn of event for the boy's family and the boy. I know many of you are calling all of Nigeria Barbarians and idiots but then again I see that most of the people voicing their frustration in this manner are in the west. I have spent half of my life in Nigeria and the other half in the United States. While they have the right to be angry, they have no right to make such blanket statement as all Nigerians are evil because of this. I even saw someone from Texas saying someone should have called 911, I am sorry to inform you but Nigeria isn’t the 51st state. While this is indeed a shocking, brutal, and senseless death, it won’t be the last time this will happen. We are fortunate that it was captured on camera for the whole world to see because this boy’s tragic death will spur government officials into action and tackle the root cause of such vigilantism. I am not sure what this says about me but I was not shocked when I heard this, I was angry but not shocked that this took place in Nigeria. The corrupt infrastructure and the lack of enough trustworthy officials to dedicate themselves to helping their country instead of themselves is the root cause of this problem. I am afraid that it will take many years before a system is in place that simply doesn’t wallow in its own feces but actively does things to instill faith in justice and protection for its citizens. I find it ironic that this boy was killed in a place named after peace and calm but no one was willing to listen to him. I hope this incident teaches people to keep a cool head and not be so quick to judge their fellow human beings. |

Nothing. I haven't been to church in years but its not like you can force someone to accept god. If you do it will end tragically. |
Nairaland / General / Re: Who is a True Nigerian? by tunku(m): 2:50am On Oct 10, 2005 |
that is a hard question to answer. I think memories are what makes a true Nigeria, memories of growing up in a city, town, or village. Memories ingrained into your very beings if you have those I think that you are a true Nigeria. I myself feel like I am loosing touch with Nigeria, my memories grow fuzzy with each year and there is nothing that I cando to stop it. |

I swear to god that looks like my modem and tv controller. The design sure isn't revolutionary but the 3d pointing sure is. I am intrigued but apprehensive about the so called revolution. I have a feeling that fighting games will suffer horribly. |

Romance / Re: Does Love Have Anything to Do With Money? by tunku(m): 5:38pm On Sep 19, 2005 |
yes we all know that love and a healthy marriage thrives on passion and passion only. Money and love are tragically transgenic in most cutlures, hell I can't recount the amount of time my father has told me to get a good job so that I may have a good wife and assorted "advices" along those line. It is naive to think that love and money do not have any effect on each other but the truth is a girl is interested in how successful you are or can be before "falling in love" with you. I love the term "falling in love' because it proves that there is no such thing as love at first sight, sure there is lust but not much else. "Oh honey I didn't know you had such a large bank account and a successful job with benefits.... I think I am falling in love with you" haha it is foolish to hope to foster a long term relationship without a healthy bankroll. I concede that money has nothing to do with one night stands but if you are talking about love and long term relationships you will be hard pressed to find a happily married couple in financial strife. 1 Like |
Family / Re: Your Child Says, "Daddy, Mommy, I'm Gay!" by tunku(m): 5:30pm On Sep 19, 2005 |
I see that the division in the sand so to speak has to do with where people are posting from. I do agree that Nigerians are very homophobic. Heck when I was living there I didn't know that such things as homosexuals exists and when I began living abroad it took a long time for me to accept that yes there are homosexual people in Nigeria. It wasn't until three years ago when I returned to Nigeria did the thought enter my mind that the most populous nation in Africa is bound ot have homosexuals and lesbians. Being gay is not a lifestyle people choose, its nature, I have always feared gays even though I didn't know any for the majority of my life on earth. Then I realize that its an unreasonable fear that is neither logical nor healthy. I am much more accepting of gays and homosexuals but I won't say that I am not without my prejudice. Some will say that living in the west has changed my world view and they are right. The simple truth of the matter is that no one in Nigeria talks about gays and if someone is gay I doubt that God is going to magically change that person into being heterosexual because if we are to go the religious route and accept God's decision, wasn't it his choice to make that person that way to begin with? Having said that I would be much more accepting of a gay offspring but it would be hard to hide my disappointment, but it is a fairer and more realistic solution to say praying that they change or disowning them outright. |
TV/Movies / Re: 'Naruto' Fever in Nigerian Universities by tunku(m): 5:00pm On Sep 19, 2005 |
This show seems to be very popular in college campuses in general. I know it is certainly the underground hit in the states amongst people studying computer science and engineering. Only the hardcore geeks find any joy in this show, I downloaded an entire season and I was passionately turned off by how unoriginal and cliche this show is. I don't know maybe some people find comfort in the familiar but this show just screams that its a derivative of the tired Dragonball and Dragonballz formulae. The protagonist is blond, he is an outcast by reason of his constitution, and he is imbued with some special power that makes him inherently superior to all other people. I would have loved this show had I not grown out of the juvenile obsession with power and lording it over all else. I don't know when I lost my interest in most animes but I just can't stand to watch this series. I was intrigued by its cult status amongst my peers but I was extremely disappointed with its banality. |
Programming / Re: Are You a Geek? [The New Geeks] by tunku(m): 4:46pm On Sep 19, 2005 |
I am definitely old geek, and I have to say most of the people who replied to this from their room should consider themselves old geek, unless they are posting from some internet cafe and actually paying ten naira per hour to do so. Therefore proving that the old geek never dies it is just accomodating itself to new modes of experession. |
