Education / Re: Have You Ever Forgotten The Spelling Of A Word In An Exam, What Was The Word? by TutorV(m): 6:21pm On Feb 09, 2022
I told a corps member this story in the office today.
During one of my GCEs, I couldn't remember the spelling of drown. I had to opt for its close relation sink, which wasn't apt for an animate entity.

Also, I forgot the spelling of egg in one of my exams. I kept on writing ege (cassava in Yoruba), and deep down within me, I knew it wasn't correct despite having three letters!

Na short time memory loss! Exam tension dey show person sege!

Education / Of State-and-school-sponsored Examination Malpractice by TutorV(m): 8:27pm On Oct 09, 2021
When I was young, mind you; I am still a young man, examination malpractice was self-sponsored and/or parent-sponsored. However, this monster, which has refused to die in the Nigerian educational system, like its twin brother, corruption, in the Nigerian state, has grown to become so huge and gigantic in size and magnitude. That all is well with the Nigerian state, especially its educational system, is a lie like the name of a known minister. The rate at which all values and morals is eroding is alarming to say the least. It is rather unfortunate that nowhere seems untainted in our clime anymore. The degeneration in the system seems to be beyond redemption, and any iota of hope to saving the near-dying-and-failing state gets grimmer with each passing day.
Education, which one would expect to rise up to the challenges of the state, is already in a shambles. No wonder now that examination malpractice is both school-sponsored and state-sponsored. You may want to ask how does the school sponsor examination malpractice and likewise how does the state sponsor this menace. Well, as much as possible, I will try to answer this bi-dimensional seemingly paradoxical question subsequently.

A friend recently shared with me some goings-on in our schools. He said that any student caught cheating during any internally organised examination in the school would be seriously dealt with by the teachers and the school authorities. But quite unfortunately, it was the same set of teachers who would be spoonfeeding and leading the students into cheating adventures, so far the examination is externally organised by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), the National Examinations Council (NECO) and others. What a double standard! Or what do we call a situation whereby the principals of a number of public schools now collect examination malpractice fee of N4, 000 and above from students who are sitting for external examinations?

One then begins to wonder the essence of sending children to school, employing teachers to teach and prepare the children for examinations and life, and buying books if the students will still be aided and spoonfed during their external examinations! Since our children will still be ‘assisted’ as some school owners brand the vice of examination malpractice, why not let us cancel schooling and all that it stands for? Maybe if we invest the individual millions and government billions annually budgeted for education/schooling into something worthwhile, we will have good returns on our investments! All we need do is to take our children and wards to school when WAEC and NECO examinations are ongoing and let the teachers do their ‘job’ — answering the questions for them!

Let me turn to how examination malpractice is state-sponsored. Education, due to its importance –which we have either lost or forgotten in Nigeria, is always one of the indices in which an administration’s performance is measured or judged. Thus, in many states of the country, especially where what is called qualifying examination is done for students in senior secondary one and two, the ministries of education (science and technology) have made it a norm/culture to reject the broadsheets that contain the results of underperforming students, thereby coercing the principals and teachers to upgrade the performance of the students, which in the real sense is actually downgrading and killing their future.

More so, governors and commissioners for education like to score some political points for good outing of their students in external examinations of WAEC and NECO by wanting to show that they have improved the lots of education better than they met it when their administration came on board. Therefore, they compel, whether directly or otherwise, principals and teachers to collude with students and their parents to cheat during their examinations, so as to increase their rating.

While these sponsors of examination malpractice think they are ‘assisting’ and ‘helping’ the students, unknowingly to them, they are realistically destroying the future of the children, the home, the state and the country at large. These days, it is far better learning handicrafts than being one of the products of terrible and destructive educational system in Nigeria. For instance, no good tailor would do ‘freedom’ (i.e. graduation) for an apprentice who cannot sew cloths for himself or herself, not to talk of clients. If an ordinary tailor would not do that, why do the state and the school keep destroying their future for immediate gains and political points? The state and the school with the parents should remember that nobody can ever cheat life. In life, failure is inevitable. Let the students fail wonderfully, learn from their failure and try again –it is the cycle of life. The earlier we wake up to collectively kill this huge monster called examination malpractice, the better for us and posterity.

Kittex7:
Parental upbringing(some) is one of our problems in Nigeria.
If you are a Tailor as a parent let your children know much about the work and train them in school
If you are a bricklayer. Let your male children know deep about the work and train them in school
What I meant by parental problems is the fact that some parents don't expose their children to the work that bring them daily bread in the family. Especially Yoruba parents. All they believe in is education then start using the yeye certificate to look for yeye job that does not exist anymore. Let's change our views. Well things have started changing now in 21st century. Our eyes are opening more more. See the young boy now I believe this was his mother business b4 he develops interest in it.

This was functional education that our traditional society had. Nobody dey look for job anywhere then. Every family has a specific trade and craft but we have lost it because of certificate-driven education! Because of leadership failure now, we are going back to where we were before.

Politics / Gov Makinde Makes Asset Public, Declares N48 Billion by TutorV(m): 10:27pm On Jul 15, 2019
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has published his asset declaration document, which shows he has in excess of N48 billion in both cash and properties.

The governor complied with Nigeria’s code of conduct law that mandates senior public office holders to file their asset details while assuming office and occasionally update them.

It is however not compulsory to make the details of asset public.

Mr Makinde went further on Monday to release details of what he filled in his asset form at the Code of Conduct Bureau in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

He also said he would encourage all his potential cabinet appointees to do so when they are nominated.

He became the first high ranking public official to do so amongst those that emerged in the last general election.

According to a statement by Taiwo Adisa, a spokesperson for Mr Makinde, the governor’s CCB OYSE/2019/001 form filed on May 28, 2019, showed the governor had N48 billion in combined cash and asset.

The asset was categorised in cash at hand, in the bank, landed properties (developed and undeveloped), household items, share and bonds owned by the governor, his wife, Omini Makinde, as well as his companies.

As of May 28, 2019, Mr Makinde’s bank balance stood at N234, 742,296.01.

In dollar terms, he has cash valued at $30,056.99 as at the same date.
Properties, including the developed and undeveloped as well as household items indicated on the asset forms, showed that the governor is worth N2, 624,800,500.

In dollar terms, Mr Makinde also declared properties, developed and undeveloped as well as household items valued at $4,400,000.

In South African Rands, the governor declared buildings and household items worth four million, four hundred and fifty-seven thousand, five hundred and fifty-four and four South African Rands.

The houses declared by the Governor include nine buildings in Nigeria, two in the United States of America and one in South Africa.

One of the properties in the United States is described as “jointly owned.”

The details showed the current value of Makinde’s companies stands at N48, 150,736,889, including 33,730,000 units of shares as of May 28, 2019.

The governor also has existing Bonds (Eurobond) worth $3, 793, 500 as well as shares, debentures and other securities valued at N120,500,000(One hundred and twenty million, five hundred thousand naira).

The companies listed by the Governor include Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited; Energy Traders and Technical Services Limited; Makon Oil and Gas Limited; Makon Group Limited, Makon Construction Limited and Makon Power System Limited.

The asset declaration form indicated that Governor Makinde’s four companies have additional assets denominated as loan notes including Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited(N1.7 billion); Makon Power System Limited(N148.4 million); Makon Oil and Gas Limited(N341 million); Energy Traders and Technical Services Limited(N1.159bn) totalling N3.389 billion.

Disclosure of asset by public officials is rare in Nigeria. The lack of transparency is believed to play a key role in the country’s alarming corruption problem.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power in 2015 with the pledge to fight corruption, promised to make his asset public. He only did so after public pressure, even so, did not release some details of his asset, including those belonging to his wife and children.

The president and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have yet to make their asset public after winning a second term.

Literature / Of Fraud And Fraudulent Activities by TutorV(m): 3:33pm On Apr 29, 2019
It was a mildly bright Monday morning when Moji, in company of her younger brother, Tunde, set out to do the bidding of her parents, especially her father who had earlier informed her the previous day of the need to accompany Tunde to one of the prominent photography studios in town, named; Beyond Photography. Tunde, being who he was, was very keen and passionate about learning the art and act of photography but the realities of life in their town had shown him life disappointing and depressing nature.

Having known that quitters were not crowned which was repeatedly emphasized in the admonitions of their parents to him and his sister, Moji, Tunde summoned up courage to face his fear by trying out again and raising his hope for an imminently engaging photography training sessions at Beyond Photography after being to the same studio two weeks earlier where he was given a printed copy of the course outline which also included the cost, time frame and needed materials to get for a worthwhile course in photography.

Seeing how organised and effective Beyond Photography was, Tunde was held spellbound; no thanks to his series of disappointing encounters with owners of photo studios with their window-dressed and sweet sounding advertisements on the radio which were exact opposites as far as training and course delivery were concerned. Tunde couldn't ask any questions from the Manager of Beyond Photography who attended to him when he went exploring the lengths and breaths of the town seeking the best hands in photography to learn under because of how detailed and unusual the course outline was. He was given a typical "shut-up treatment". It was also interesting to that Beyond Photography promised 25% reduction of the training fee if it was made in full at once.

Like a man who had just found a goldmine, Tunde returned home with extreme ecstasy thinking his days of frustrations were almost coming to an end. Deliberations began after he had informed his parents of his findings about Beyond Photography and as good and godly parents who were ready to sacrifice their plans for their children's gains, their parents decided to take the bull by the horns and give their son the best he deserved even though it wasn't easy for them but they had to. For this reason, Moji was called to help navigate the situation so as to avoid being duped again by best-packaged-empty-nothing photo studios like in the recent past.

Therefore, Moji rose to the task with her brother to verify and validate the noble packages in Beyond Photography course outline for Advanced Training in Photography. Warmly welcomed by the receptionist of the photo studio and with their intention revealed, they, Moji and Tunde, were directed to meet the Manager. He gave them a nice welcome and the discussion began.

Moji reiterated their purpose of coming and began raising some questions about how the training course would be run because with Tunde's background experience in photography, she believed that the time framee for the training could be reduced so as for him to be able to do some other important things. However, the Manager maintained that it would be impossible to get well trained for the time frame being suggested by Moji due to some important factors.

Then came the shocker and twist to the discussion. MONEY! Moji referred to the evident and in bold fonts of the claimed 25% reduction in the training fee if full payment was made. But, the Manager, to Moji's and Tunde's dismay, said that the offer had expired since the previous year and went on to cancel the portion where the offer was written on the outline; claiming he forgot to mention it to Tunde when he came two weeks earlier.

This was incredulous and at the same time shocking to the siblings. Arguments then ensued between Moji and the Manager. She made him know that it was fraudulent to include a bait for would-be customers in order to lure them to patronising Beyond Photography and for the same to later show that the offer upon which customers' calculations were made had expired. She went further to query the reliability of the course contents themselves; for if the outline which had the offer could be changed just within two weeks which the Manager claimed had expired the previous year, then their competence and reliability to effectively handle the course itself became questionable.

As if that wasn't enough, when Moji advised Beyond Photography to take out the offer of reduction from the outline so as not to lure future innocent customers and demanded an apology for obviously misleading and almost deceiving Tunde and by extention Moji and their parents, the Manager arrogantly said he couldn't apologise; for he was not the owner but simply working for someone. He was even boldly telling Moji that he had other things to do even while still discussing.

This made Moji to conclude that she would direct her grievances to the Director of the studio and question the same for posing to defraud innocent customers. Moji and Tunde left the studio afterwards to know the next line of action.

I will be glad if you can suggest what to invest in that will yield some good returns so as to make my meager amount of money work for me.

Using "k" instead of "OK" or "okay" is simply irritating and annoyingly offensive. I detest it with passion. I hate chatting with me with shorthand. It simply reduces intelligence, personality and speaks volume of the kind of a person the chatter is.

Aside being a language teacher, I have been forced on countless occasions to correct, chide and rebuke people who are unrepentant and ever annoying even when corrected. Little wonder many graduates cannot compose correct simple sentences.

Always coming up with their idioctic "English is not my mother tongue" excuse. This makes one never to cease to wonder if such persons have really let the school to pass through them. There are simply ill-literate or literate but uneducated.
