Politics / Re: Lagos Rated ‘fifth Worst City’ by Tuyis: 7:56pm On Feb 13, 2010

Dude are you for real? You use Wikipedia as your source of information?

Well I would define in my own words what makes a mega city. A Megacity is one which has to meet not one but several criteria such as population growth, commerce, dependence on technology, and its impact in economical development, etc. Lagos met the criteria on the part of it reaching more than 10millions, that's it? In terms of commerce, what is the percentage and volume of commerce is concentrated in Lagos? How far has Lagos reached on its dependence of technology?

Why did I know you will say that. Discredit the source of the information rather than the facts, classic. Unfortunately the world is not seen through your own lenses alone. I did not write the wiki definition, it was probably written by several people.

If your criteria about commerce is anything to go by then cities like Kolkata, manila, Mexico city and Lagos will not be on the same list of Mega cities as Tokyo, New York, London, Osaka etc.

Lagos is a city and if you know the answer to what a city is defined as, then you define what the term "MEGA" is in the context of city, that should give you your broad definition of what a mega city is.

I will take your answer as you don't really know or not sure. The following definition of a Mega city was taken from Wikipedia. Do you think it also applies to Lagos or not.

A megacity is usually defined as a metropolitan area with a total population in excess of 10 million people.[1] Some definitions also set a minimum level for population density (at least 2,000 persons/square km).[citation needed] Megacities can be distinguished from global cities by their rapid growth, new forms of spatial population density, and both formal and informal economy, as well as poverty, crime, and high levels of social fragmentation. A megacity can be a single metropolitan area or two or more metropolitan areas that converge. The terms conurbation, metropolis and metroplex are also applied to the latter. The terms megapolis and megalopolis are sometimes used synonymously with megacity.[citation needed]
In 2000, there were 18 megacities – conurbations such as Tokyo, New York City, and Mexico City had populations in excess of 10 million inhabitants. Greater Tokyo already has 35 million, which is greater than the entire population of Canada.[2]

I wouldn't call Lagos a Mega city  for so many reasons, and that is the point I'm trying to make.

And what would be your criteria for a mega city.

yorubas are educated and wealthier than hausas but they are not as smart as the housas thats why lagos is a slum and abuja and kaduna are better

I think you are just trying to be provocative, there is absolutely no sense in what you just wrote.
Why must everything boil down to tribalism. Lagos is what it is due to neglect period.

Politics / Senators Urge Yar' Adua Handover by Tuyis: 2:17pm On Feb 09, 2010
Nigeria assembly urges ill Yar'Adua to transfer power

Both houses of Nigeria's National Assembly have passed a motion for sick President Umaru Yar'Adua to hand power to his deputy until he recovers.
The BBC's Ahmed Idris in Abuja says the move among the political elite to back the vice-president is unprecedented.
Mr Yar'Adua has been in hospital in Saudi Arabia since last November.
His allies have been loath to see Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan sworn in as acting president because of Nigeria's delicate regional balance of power.
Mr Yar'Adua is a northerner while Mr Jonathan is from the south.
Since democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999, power has alternated between north and south and some northern power-brokers do not want to see their "turn" cut short.
Mr Yar'Adua's absence has sparked legal challenges, cabinet splits and mass protests.
It has led to a freeze in government business and threatens progress made in halting unrest in the oil-rich Niger Delta.
Cabinet challenge
Our correspondent says members of the Senate and House of Representatives and state governors are usually loyal to the president, and the office of vice-president carries little weight.
But the governors decided last week to back Mr Jonathan to become acting president and have been lobbying senators ever since.
The Senate carried the motion declaring that Mr Jonathan "shall henceforth discharge the functions of the office of president, commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the federation, as acting president".
But it is unclear what the next step will be.
Some analysts have suggested the assembly's motion is not legally binding and could face court challenges.
Others say the move has laid down a challenge to the cabinet - due to meet on Wednesday - and presidency to accept the handover, or risk inflaming public opinion.
The cabinet has previously insisted that the president is able to continue in office, although splits subsequently emerged within ministerial ranks.
Elusive leader
Separately, the Senate is also expected to consider a move to impeach the president.
Two weeks ago, the assembly asked Mr Yar'Adua to provide a letter confirming he was sick, which would pave the way for a formal transfer of power.
But there has been no letter, and anti-Yar'Adua factions are expected to give a Thursday deadline for the letter, or threaten impeachment.
A presidential aide last week told the BBC such a letter would be written soon.
Mr Yar'Adua has not been seen in public since flying to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment in November.
He gave a radio interview to the BBC's Hausa service in early January in which he pledged to return to Nigeria as soon as the doctors would allow.
But nothing more has been heard from the leader, who is suffering from an inflammation of the lining around the heart and has long suffered from kidney problems.- BBC News

Business / Re: Will A Large Supermarket Thrive In Nigeria? by Tuyis: 3:31pm On Dec 07, 2009
It can definitely work in Nigeria, but the key is where and how you get your products. The manufacturing base in Nigeria is still very weak at the moment, which means you have to get a good percentage of your wares from imports.

At the moment a lot of consumer goods are prohibited even when there are no local substitutes.
Your business will be at the mercy of a capricious government that can wipe you out at any time with a stroke of a pen.
You will need to get at least 80% of your merchandise from Nigeria before you can even think of such investments.
Remember Nigeria is littered with carcasses of once promising retail ventures.

Your car should come with a small credit card size card bearing the code. Check inside the owners manual or try any authorized Honda dealer.

Without the code, the sound system is not going to work.

Money is simply a tool, it doesn't make you happy or miserable. If you are rich and miserable, give all the money away and you'll only be poor and miserable.

You call it customer service, I call it incompetence. This single reason is probably why Nigeria is just limping along instead of sprinting ahead.
We love to go to extraordinary lengths to do pretty ordinary things. Get a passport, register a company, check in or out at the airport, get a treatment at the hospital, the list is endless. Everybody acts as if they are doing you a favor and not simply doing their jobs.

@Daretayo

I believe this is is a good idea, however you need to conduct your own research to find out if enough people will buy gas instead of kerosine.
The market is potentially huge but old habits die hard, Nigerians are accustomed to using kerosine, therefore it may take a while to persuade them that using gas is safe. Safety is a major concern for most people.
