Education / The Well Deserved Appointment Of Prof. Aliyu Jauro As DG, NESREA And Unfair Oppo by Ubaida2607(m): 7:47pm On Mar 31, 2019
The Well Deserved Appointment of Prof. Aliyu Jauro As DG, NESREA And Unfair Opposition

By Musa Salis Umar

As a true son of the Northern part of this great country, Northeast in particular, I note with utmost dismay, a publication in March 29, 2019 editions of Business Day, Thisday and Tribune Online, amongst other online publications, a demand of the South and Middle Belt leaders asking the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to reverse the appointment of the new Director General of the Nigerian Environmental Standards and Regulatory Agency NESREA, Prof. Aliyu Jauro who hails from Gombe State, Northeast, Nigeria.

As much as I respect the Southern and Middle Belt leaders often seen as brothers and compatriots of the North, I find their reasons for this unusual position in complete disconcord with all parameters of fairness, equity and justice in what should be the common patrimony of us all citizens of this great nation, Nigeria where we are all equal partners.

The respected leaders from the South and the Middle belt have described
this appointment as lopsided and sectional, before calling for its reversal.

The first question that naturally comes to discerning minds is how can someone, literally, direct his President to reverse an appointment, which he made in excercise of his constitutional powers simply because the appointee is not from their region?

If for anything, the outgoing director general, Dr. Lawrence Anukam is from the South East. The Acting Director General, Mrs Miranda Amachree is from the South south. While they were at the helm of affairs at NESREA, no Northerner raised any protest. Therefore why should the South south, South East, South West and the Middle Belt begrudge this same service to the nation coming from the North and Northeast in Particular? Are we not entitled to that position as well?

Available records also shows that 90% of the NASEREA's staff are from the Southern and the Middlebelt regions and the rest of the Northern region shared the remaining 10%, is that not lopsisded enough for the Southern and Middlebelt leaders to allow equal opportunity to flow in the affairs of this nation at least as far as NESREA is concerned?

Talking about experience, though my position is not to contest how "highly experienced or thoroughbred" Dr. Lawrence Anukam is. According to the statement of the Southern and Middle Belt leaders, Dr. Anukam is a “thorough professional with over 30 years of experience.” So if he has served for three decades, is that a rational reason why a younger professor should not be appointed with fresh ideas into the running of the Agency?

I find this position completely discomforting.

Professor Jauro is a 1995 graduate not 1997 as claimed by the leaders of the South and Middlebelt. And that is 22 years post-graduation, with a distinguished professorial seat for that matter. One begins to wonder whether it is the length of years spent in service or the distinction attained in value addition that matters?

It will be recalled that in the late 70s, then Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, “transferred” Professor Adamu Baikie who was only four years as professor and Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to University of Benin as Vice Chancellor.

Professor Baikie went to Benin and successfully headed Professors, most of them with twenty years experience. His tenure was superlative, and was convinced to do a second term. After which, University of Botswana head hunted him to the Southern African country, where he remained a legendary builder and developer, proving that it is never about the length of years that bestows wisdom.

Before delving into the resumé of Professor Jauro, may we examine the history of NESREA from inception and judge if appointing a northerner to head it for the first time since its establishment constitutes an act of injustice in our collective heritage.

Dr Mrs Ngeri Benebo, was the pioneer DG of NESREA from 2006-2014, is from Rivers State while Dr. Lawrence Chidi Anukam, from Imo State, took over from 2014-2018. In fact, all of the technical Directors are from the South and middlebelt, but, in the spirit of one nation, the rest of the North did not protest against this imbalance.

The Pioneer DG spent 8 years due to her performance. But the second DG was, ostensibly, not impressive enough in capacity for value addition, requisite leadership culture and discipline to take NESREA to the "Next Level". If the out-gone DG is a non-performer, then you should not expect any serious government to renew his term of office simply because he is from the south! There is absolutely everything good in appointing a distinguished young Professor of the Baikie class to rescue NESREA, a sinking ship.

There are particular reasons why I find this unfortunate opposition on the appointment of Prof. Aliyu Jauro baseless. It is beyond the fact that in the spirit of equity, the North should take its first shot after two others who have headed the Agency from the South.

One of the reasons is that Professor Jauro is an eminently qualified Professor to do the job considering his intimidating credentials and cognate experience, garnered worldwide. A peep into his CV will reveal that since he graduated in 1995, his career progression has been smooth and steady due to uncommon excellence.

Google has made things easy for every student, I did a little research about the said professor via Nairaland and came across his rich and intimidating CV which divulge that, Prof. Aliyu Jauro was born in 1971 in his home state of Gombe. His area of specialization is well and adequately suited for the organization, NESREA that he has been appointed to head. He is a professor of Industrial Chemistry and lectures at the Department of Chemistry in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

He had his tertiary education at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi from
1989-1995, 1999-2002, 2002-2007, then
German National Centre for Geosciences
Research, (GeoForschungsZentrum), Potsdam, Germany, March-October 2005, Bench Work.

The Professor's fertile resume` expose that
within the span of his "short" academic and professional career he supervised 13 MSc's and 5 PhD's to completion; published at least 45 Journal articles in reputable journals; 10 Technical reports/proceedings; attended and presented papers at several workshops and conferences both locally and abroad; published 1 textbook; and, a book chapter.

Now, back to the “demand” of the southern and middle belt leaders, I find it rather unconscionable that Mr. Isuwa Dogo, a man who claims to represent the Middle belt which is part of the North would be found in this assembly, demanding for the reversal of the appointment of Prof. Jauro from the neighbouring North East as DG of NESREA.

For one, Mr Dogo really ought to know that the link between the Northeast and the so-called Middle belt is umbilical. They are all in the same North trough and Professor Jauro’s quantum of research work on the Middlebelt trough is incredibly enormous in collaboration with eminent academic researchers from the entire Middle Belt on solving environmental problems associated with the two regions.

The list of the distinguished academic researchers that have collaborated with Prof. Jauro are many. This response will mention only one or two.

Can Mr. Dogo move around and enquire from the distinguished Profs N. G. Obaje
and B.A. Ikyenge first before reviewing his position as a so called leader of the Middle Belt?

Can he say that he has contributed more to the cause of the Middle belt than Prof. Jauro who sees himself as one with, and in the region?

Talk about a man shooting himself in the foot. And I already have a classic example in this gentleman, Mr Dogo.

Enough said already! The distinguished Prof Jauro is more than qualified to be exactly where His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has deemed it fit to place him.

Primaries Fall-out: SDP woos Aggrieved APC Chieftains In Gombe

The political terrain in Nigeria is hardly a safe place to bruise egos, exhibit rudeness or disrespect elders, for it leads only one way, and that is political decline and ruination.

That is the hard lesson Danjuma Goje, former two term PDP governor of Gombe State and a serving senator under APC has found out rather too late.

Goje must have thought that he was setting up his own political dynasty as a godfather in the Jewel of the Savannah when he personally imposed through underhanded ways, his Commissioner for Finance for almost eight years, Inuwa Yahaya as the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Practically all political godfathers do that in the hope that they can get away with it. Unfortunately for the All Progressives Congress, APC in Gombe State, It doesn't really matter that Danjuma Goje, former PDP two term governor of the north eastern state is the undisputed APC chieftain. The Buhari factor helped in no small measure anyway, to encourage him to cross the carpet for the obvious advantage of being free from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC worries.

That kind of position of strength was what led to the political arrogance of Danjuma Goje in the imposition of Inuwa Yahaya who lost the same contest in 2015 to Governor Dankwambo.

The imposition angered the rest APC's gubernatorial aspirants that lost the primaries is the just concluded APCs primaries and as soon as Goje’s former Chief of Staff, ‘brainbox’ and political Mr. Fix-it while he (Danjuma Goje) was governor, Chikere Kumo, pitch his tent with the Social Democratic Party, SDP, weighing of options became a serious contention for the former aspirants of the APC’s ticket.

The SDP is wooing for the former aspirants to quit the APC and join the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

Already, there is a plan by them to leave the APC for the SDP. THE reason is because of their firm belief that Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya would simply fail to make it in 2019 because of his unpopularity in Gombe due to his failure to contribute a dime to the development of Gombe State.
Inuwa Yahaya comes from money. His father is reputed to have been a very wealthy man. That made him attractive as an asset to Danjuma Goje.

But Inuwa Yahaya’s serious drawbacks include the fact that throughout his days as Gombe State Commissioner for Finance, there's no record of him providing at least a borehole in his Jekadafari ward in Gombe local government. Neither did he build a block of classrooms, things that would ordinarily impress, politically.

The aspirants see Inuwa Yahaya contesting again for the 2019 gubernatorial election again as a reinforcement of political failure.

Perhaps Goje just doesn't get it. Picking a candidate who has all his family investments and fortune in far away North Western State of Kano is beginning to bore the multifarious tribes of Gombe State.

Sen. Goje would have make a better decision to choose from the most powerful ones, examples of Alh. Habu Mu'azu, Faruq Bamusa, Muhammadu Danbarde or even Barr. Idris Hinna.

With the APC chain of events culminating in Danjuma Goje’s backing of Inuwa Yahaya said to have his origins in Jigawa State, political watchers say decline has set in for the former governor.

As Chikere Kumo’s SDP continues to wax stronger, the APC will definitely be empty soon, and Goje will regret his backing of Inuwa Yahaya that has led to the exit of his former backers and associates.

With the departure of Chikere Kumo to SDP, Inuwa Yahaya can only win his Jekadafari ward.

This may turn out to be the worst outing for the APC in Gombe State

The ex-prisoners who were fined between N3000 and N10, 000 and compensation between N5000 and N15000 for offences ranging from loitering to stealing said they could not pay their fines because they were poor and helpless and were mostly youths ranging between 18-30, they included Suleiman Umar Gurama 22, Ibrahim Musa 20, Muhammad Auwal 27, Abubakar Musa 20, Ibrahim Dauda 20, Faisal Inusa 25, Ali Adamu 18 and Adamu Abubakar 20, just to mention but few.

Earlier, the President of the GRI,Alh. Salisu Abubakar who was ably represented by Dr. Umar Adamu (TJ) of the department of Public Administration, Gombe State University said many people serving jail terms in prisons across the country were often youths who were detained as a result of their inability to pay a little fine. Gombe Youths Commissioner's 2017 Landmarks (1)

By Abu-Ubaidah Ibrahim Kuna

It is rare that Gombe State Government under the able leadership of Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo OON, FCA, PhD. (Talban Gombe) has appointed youths to significant political positions. In essence, Dankwambo administration seems to be gradually accommodating creative and well talented youth in government and one of them is a 42 year old Hon. Commissioner of Youth Empowerment, Hon. Malam Farouk Yarma.

Farouk Yarma is a graduate of the Federal University of Technology , Yola , with a degree in Building Technology (BTech). Young Yarma has a wealth of educational experience. He has championed a good number of educational qualifications from the notable institutions of Nigeria, such as the National Certificate in Education (N.C.E) at FCE (Tech) Gombe, Diploma in Sports Administration and major events at the Sports With Business Schools, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa, a Course conducted in collaboration with University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Let me just cut and say Hon. Farouk Yarma was on the trip of success since when he was at the early age of his life, in a State where most of his mates thinking on having a luxury life and of course, some battle with unemployment.

He has served as the general Secretary, Association of Block Laying and Concrete, FTC Yaba-Lagos, 1993; Sports Director, Students Union Government, FCE (Tech) Gombe 1999-2000; National Coordinator, Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Football Club Lagos, 2003-2005; Board Member/General Coordinator, Gombe United Football Club, 2008-2011; General Coordinator Club Owners Nigeria Premier League, 2010-2011; Acting Secretary, Gombe United Football Club, 2009; Member, Transport Committee, Bauchi Sub-Seat, FIFA Under-17 World Cup, Nigeria, 2009; Member, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) Delegation at Under-20 World Cup in Cairo, Egypt, 2009; Member, Media and Publicity Committee of the NFF at the FIFA world Cup South Africa, 2010; Founder, President/CEO Yarmalight Football Academy, Gombe (The First of its kind in the North-East Sub-Region, 2009-Date; SA on Sports to the Former Governor, Gombe State, 2009-2011; Patron, Nigerian Football Referees' Association, 2011-Date; Grand Patron, Gombe State Football Referees Council, 2011-Date; Patron Professional Football Players of Nigeria, 2011 - Date; Member Nigerian Boxing Federation (Representing North-East), 2013-2017 (Four years Tenure); Member, Nigeria Premier League (NPL) Electoral Committee, 2011; First Executive Chairman, Gombe State Sports Commission, 2011-2015; Honourable Commissioner of Youth Empowerment, Gombe State, 2015 - date.

Yarma's 2017 landmarks achievements speaks for his creativeness, doggedness, commitment and jumbo experience in both sports and youth administration and of course, differentiated him from other youths of his age.

In 2017, the young Yarma as the Gombe State Hon. Commissioner of Youth Empowerment through his exemplary knowledge in youth administration has initiated and ensured the recruitment and training of 1100 Education Marshals and placed on a monthly allowance of N10,000 each. To perfect the policy of Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo in jobs creation and reduction of youth restiveness in Gombe State, Farouk initiated a youth engagement and participation programme code named g-Hope, where 5000 Youth were trained on various skills acquisition programs and paid a monthly stipend of N5,000 each.

To provide Gombe youth with various vocational skills, his ministry in collaboration with Industrial Training Fund (ITF), have engaged 1500 youths on various skills. These youths are currently receiving N5,000 monthly on training and will benefit from the provision of starter packs by the end of the training.

Gombe Renaissance Initiative holds Inaugural Meeting

By Muhammad Ibrahim

Gombe Renaissance Initiative (GRI), a fledgling organization comprising of bonafide indegines of Gombe State has, on Sunday, 25th June, 2017, held its inaugural meeting to mark the beginning of a new dawn in terms of youth empowerment, promotion of education and rendering selfless services to the less privileged.

In a widely attended meeting comprising of virtually all members of the newly-formed association, the President of the organization, Salisu Abubakar Aliyu, emphatically connoted that GRI is a registered non-partisan and non-governmental organization with the cardinal aim of paying back to Gombe, what Gombe State and its good citizens have given to them.

"GRI is the brain-child of the bonafide indigenes of Gombe State who are driven by sheer altruism, after carefully studying the pervasive socio-economic challenges facing Gombe State. Therefore, as a means of contributing our own quota to the development of the State, we decided to come together to form GRI", he said.

Mr. Salisu also elucidated that the cardinal reason behind the formation of GRI, as a means of fostering unity among the hordes of indigenes of Gombe State, is to ensure meaningful leadership development, and for the good citizens to be actively involved in developmental strides within Gombe State. It suffices to add that the association is aimed at fostering mutual assistance amongst the citizens of the State.

As a result of the glaring, although surmountable challenges, bedeviling the education sector, Mr. Salisu stated that GRI is "going to dedicate ample time and resources towards providing meaningful intervention in the educational sector, and to seek for ways of unlocking other opportunities geared towards attaining a first-class education in Gombe."

While responding to questions from newsmen, the President said that the membership of the organization is open to all the good citizens of Gombe State irrespective of tribe, religion and gender. It is an open organization "to all the indigenes of Gombe who share the ideals and ideologies of GRI", he noted.

In a related development, the GRI has, immediately after its inaugural meeting, embarked on its designed activities as part of Sallah gesture by visiting and donating food stuffs and, most importantly, valuable items to the inmates of Gombe Convict Prison.

In addition, GRI has also paid a special visit to Gombe Specialist Hospital in order to ascertain the health sector needs in the State, thereby donating drugs and delivery materials to those in need of them, but couldn't afford it.

The President finally encouraged all well-meaning citizens of Gombe State to support the movement by joining hands together to develop their immediate community as a way of giving back to the society, what it has given to them.

Nairaland / General / An Open Letter To The Management Of JED, In Charge Of Gombe State by Ubaida2607(m): 6:06pm On Apr 13, 2017
AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MANAGEMENT OF JOS ELECTRICITY DISTRIBUTION (JED), IN CHARGE OF GOMBE STATE

I am writing this with uttermost pain in my heart for Gombe State to be under your so-called company for power services. We all know of the epileptic power supply in Nigeria but it is just of recent under the JED PLC that Gombe State have been experiencing what I can describe as a an epileptic power supply as the result of recklessness and deprivation by JED Plc.

It would be recalled that, during the privatization process, Nigerians were all happy hoping to have stable and affordable power supply in Nigeria and Gombe State in particular not knowing that we are going to experience the worst epileptic and the most expensive power supply in the history of Gombe State.

Before the coming of your Company, Gombe State was one of the best state in terms of power Supply, we are incomparably with many State in Nigeria. When your so-called company landed in Gombe State, we were expecting a power company that will be more efficient than any other power company in Nigeria, best on your adverts. But unfortunately, you are the worst and poorest power Company in Nigeria.

Gombe State under JED's control is just an old wine in new wineskin. You are just treating us by using alzheimer's formula... As you have totally deprived us from getting the right power services while always sending us an unaffordable bills to pay for what we have never consumed.

Ever since You have become the power distributor company to Gombe State, we have never experienced good power supply and we are still silent never raised an alarm about your notorious act, but things are getting worst and out of hand and you will never have us mute again. The worst thing is that, you bring the bill every month and it has now become your norms that you only make the power somehow stable every month (epileptic of course) while your people are distributing bills. Another annoying thing is that Jos and Bauchi that are under your control are not under same fate. Their power is more stable than Gombe State.

Another disturbing and unwelcome thing is this your so-called "prepaid meter". This meter is nothing but the deprivation and exploitation of the masses. It is another way of making things difficult for the masses in Gombe State. It has no value to the people of Gombe State, it is another way of more bill consuming, most of the people are complaining about it, even those that are living in GRA and Federal Low Cost are complaining about how the "meter" is consuming the recharge, with or without power, you must consume at least N16, 000 each and every month (that's if you are not using all your electrical appliances).

It is also comes to the notice of the people of Gombe State, that the so-called "prepaid meter" isn't the one approved by the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA).

It is in this sense, that I am writing this letter to call the attention of JED management, in charge of Gombe State and all other authorities concerned to act quickly before things get out of hand because People are now onlooking and one day after knowing they are left facing the wall, we shall all pounce on you and I so sure any public defender will be glad to take up this case.

Signed

Nairaland / General / Doctorate Degree On Governor Dankwambo Undeserving: A Rejoinder To Comrade Aruna by Ubaida2607(m): 3:34pm On Apr 13, 2017
Doctorate Degree on Governor Dankwambo Undeserving: A Rejoinder to Comrade Aruna Kadiri

By: Abu-Ubaidah Ibrahim Kuna

I am compelled to react about the recent senseless, misguided and mischief story of the so-called President of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Aruna Kadiri, for describing the recent conferment of Honorary Doctorate Degree on Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo by the management of the Ekiti State University as an "Underserving".

I would like to begin by disclosing what was enclosed or what is not known to Nigerian Students and all media outfits that Comrade Aruna Kadiri isn't the echt President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, he is an impersonator of the position of Comrade Chinonso Obasi a.k.a IBB, the genuine 31st President of the apex students' body.

The alleged interception of the NANS 31st National convention in Gombe State by Governor Dankwambo through his chief of Staff by the claims NANS president, Comrade Aruna Kadiri is an outright lie and mere sponsored political Blackmail on Governor Dankwambo. Governor Dankwambo never in anyway nor "through his chief of Staff" intercepted the NANS convention in Gombe State. As the chief security officer of the state, he provided all necessary supports to the success of NANS convention in the State, especially in the area of security. But with all his efforts to ensure the success of the convention, you and your team, after losing the election to IBB's team went ahead to destabilize everything in the convention venue and even came out in the media to condemned the election because you lacked courage to accept defeat.

It is now Crystal clear that even if you have become the president of NANS, that's the way you would be handling the affairs of this great association by making it a political machinery to be using by your people just to carry out attacks on reputable leaders. I think it would have been the greatest mistake Nigerian students would ever make if given you that mandate.

I firmly believe that the Nigerian Students rejected you the opportunity to lead NANS because of your wickedness, selfishness, greed and mistrust.

I want Mr. Kadiri to know that, the Honorary Doctorate Degree conferred on Governor Dankwambo by EKSU was the result of his myriad contributions to the development of Nigeria and his giant strides in Economic Development in Gombe State. Governor Dankwambo has bagged his academic PhD. from the Igbenidion University since 2013, that is to express to you that, there is something which you will never take away from him. The honorary Doctorate Degree conferred on him is an additional honour best on what he has done and given to this nation. Dankwambo's contributions to the development of Education cannot be overemphasized. You were in Gombe during NANS' convention and I believe you have seen an incomparable development in the State. Education has been declared Dankwambo's first, second and third priority. He has within six years of his two tenures achieved an unimaginable in the sector.

Within the six years of his two tenures, Governor Dankwambo constructed new Central model Schools at Gombe, Dukku, Funakaye, Akko, Billiri, Kaltungo and Deba Local Government Areas and renovated over 502 class rooms in both primary and Secondary Schools across the State. He built up 51 laboratories to improve the standard of Science and technology education in the State and Constructed new secondary and Primary Schools at Gabukka, Herwagana, Abubakar Umar Memorial and Kurjale. Others are Auwaru, Futuk in Akko LGA, Lalaipido in Shongom LGA and Awak in Kaltungo LGA. He is also committed in providing best teaching in the State by Recruiting over 2000 University graduates and over 1000 NCE graduates to make up the shortage of teachers in both primary and secondary schools across the state with another 762 graduates recently. Purchased of over 4000 (three in one) desks for Secondary schools, reading and writing materials to Primary, junior and secondary schools across the state, Purchased of over 2570 double decker beds and over 636 tables and chairs for students in boarding schools and principals and teachers respectively, fabrication and supply of 13, 183 sets of pupils furniture and 1, 200 sets of teachers furniture for the school, Purchase and supply of instructional materials and lecture's aids in primary schools, Construction of Staff quarters and 68 VIP toilets in Schools across the state. To also ensure more quality teaching and learning in schools, Dankwambo administration has created a quality Assurance Department. Training of 5, 000 teachers as part of professional development and 3, 918 teachers consisting of 888 junior secondary and 3, 030 primary teachers.

His commitment to give the best in higher education within the six years of his two tenures has become imperative as he constructed and established five Tertiary institutions which included the School of Basic and Remedial Studies at Kumo and Daban - Fulani, Conventional College of Education Billiri, College of Nursing and Midwifery Dukku (under construction), State Polytechnic Bajoga, School of Legal and Islamic Studies Nafada, Gombe State university college of medical Science (under construction) and procurement and installation of laboratory equipment for the college and faculty of pharmaceutical science, Gombe State University. The Governor has recently inaugurated a committee for the establishment of another five tertiary institutions which include: State University of Science and Technology, College of Agriculture and Animal husbandry, College of Accountancy, Institute of Journalism and Institute of Sports.

In this sense, Governor Dankwambo is a friend to Education and he deserved every award and honour by any institution. Therefore, what Kadiri Aruna wrote is an act of irresponsibility and a blackmail on Governor Dankwambo. NANS should be caution of Kadiri's misbehavior and his contrive to create pandemonium, dissension and dispute between the Nigerian Students.
