BICYCLE COMMUTING IN NIGERIA A CHOICE TO CONSIDER NOW

8 DAY BICYCLE COMMUTING EXPERIMENT

How on earth can we survive in this harsh economy? People must feed, people must go to school, work, places of worship, market, just to mention a few. Transporters are not finding it easy with the hike in fuel price; passengers now have to bear the geometric increase of transportation by over 250 percent increase.

A journey of #100 now cost #350, a journey of #200 now cost #450 and so on and so forth. How can the poor breath. These were the thought pondering my tender heart when suddenly the picture of a bicycle pricked my thought.

Neighborhood commuting can actually be done using a bicycle. To and fro the market for household needs using a bicycle would save a minimum of #2000 weekly depending on where you live in Nigeria.

Fast forward……

I did a little research on bicycle commuting around the world; it was fascinating to discover how fun bicycle commuting can be. IN FACT There are around 23 million bicycles (including about 2.4 million e-bikes) in the Netherlands research has shown that almost every adults in the Netherlands own a bicycle both for short and long distance movement.
I journeyed to the nearest bicycle retailer in my locality to get myself one; he doesn’t sell brand new bicycles but UK used as he called them…..

DAY 1 bicycle commuting

I packed my lunch, extra cloths and I began cycling to the office. It was indeed fun even though it was difficult cycling up hills but there was no going back for me. It took me 28 minutes to get to my office. Cycling back home was actually very difficult. I had to cycle uphill, my backs and thighs felt like drifting apart but I had to keep trying. I was able to safe #1000

DAY 2 bicycle commuting

I did the same routine like the previous day but I had to try an alternative route to my office. I needed to take another route with fewer hills. Day 2 was a little harder, my thighs were really aching from the previous day, but I just won’t give up. My target experiment was 8 days I can’t quit at day 2.

DAY 3 bicycle commuting

I was now enjoying the cycling by day 3, I had learnt new pedaling technique from YouTube Videos the previous day, now I could cycle a little faster and apply some technical skills when cycling. By day 3 I had saved #4500 already because I had also cycled to the market and places.

DAY 4 to 8 bicycle commuting.

Between day 4 and 8 I needed to do maintenance servicing for my bicycle. I bought a side mirror, greased my chains, adjusted my bicycle mud guard and worked on my breaks. All these cost less than #1500. By day 8 I had saved about #8000 which ordinarily would have been used as transportation fares to the office and other running around?

NOTE: Bicycle Commuting may not be a good choice for very busy cities. However, if you live in bicycle friendly commuting area, do consider BICYCLE COMMUTING as an alternative means of transportation.
