Programming / Re: 10 Reasons Why .NET Is Better Than Java by ucard: 3:21pm On Apr 11, 2007

I have watched from behind screen why DOT NET Framework is a leader among software development technologies.

I quite agree, may be with some bias. I have never used java before, not even another technology, JUST DOT NET. Besides, DOT NET is a technology, a framework, not a language.
DOT NET combines code interpretation with compilation. It's able to check your code for syntax error as you type them.

A question for sbucareer:
Have you written any MCAD/MCSD/MCPD Exam befor? I doubt so much. If you have, it means you did not understand the issues addressed by each of the exams.

MCPD may be new to a lot of people in the world, yet not many people in the world have MCAD/MCSD certification.

Each of the exams in this series costs =N=16,000.00, definitely far cheaper than JAVA exams.

In the MCAD/MCSD Certification, You have three exams to get MCAD (microsoft certified application developer), two compulsory exams and one elective.

In the compulsory exams,
You are to choose between The Windows exam and the Web exam (Exam 70-305/315 or Exam 70-306/316)
The windows exam checks for your expertise in the use of Dot NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 in developing windows-based applications.
The web exam checks for your expertise in the use of Dot NET Framework 1.0 and 1.1 in developing web-based applications.

The above exams assumed that you have about two years experience developing applications with visual studio.NET

In the MCTS/MCPD exams, a Foundation exam has been carved out from the above segments as a starting point for beginners/novices.

The next compulsory exam you must write is Exam 070-320/310
This exam addresses the Implementation of XML Web Services and Server Technologies in Dot net framework 1.0 and 1.1. Obviously this is one very vital exam in the MCAD/MCSD exam series.

The elective exam comes from an array of choices. I may not be able to explore the choices here.

When you pass these three exams, you have the MCAD Certification.

From MCAD, you have two additional exams to obtain MCSD.
If you have written the windows exam in MCAD, you must write the Web exam this time, vice versa. This ensures you can work on both windows and web applications.

Then you have to write Exam 070-300 which is a design exam. You will agree with me that designing the framework for an application is key to successful development of the application. Many have got this area wrong which is why many applications fail.

When you have passed these five exams, you now qualify as a MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer)

I spent less than $200 when I learnt dot NET and I earn my living from DOT NET today.

Programming / Software Technology Exhibition by ucard: 12:09pm On Mar 26, 2007
Hellow Programmers,

I am proposing that we organise an exhibition of Software Technologies in Nigeria. The essence of the exhibition is to Identify key technologies in software sector that is capable of beating similar technologies in the world, and that give support to such technologies through sponsorship and other ways that may be necessary.

I have seen some stunning technologies that are being proposed by some Nigerians. Some of them may not necessarily have all it takes to take such evolutions to a height it deserves.

We are acctually working on one of such technologies and I assure you, you will be delighted when we finally roll it out to the public. It got the required approval at every place we presented it. It is one technology that will change your thought about software business in Nigeria.

We must drive the software business in Nigeria. Let our Industries stop sourcing for softwares from outside the shore of Nigeria.

Let us know your opinion on this exhibition and how we could achieve it.

Programming / Re: Inserting And Retrieving Images To/From Database In ASP.NET by ucard: 11:39am On Mar 26, 2007
If you are using asp.net 2.0 or 3.0 and sql server 2005. You can use the fileupload server control to get the image from a file on the client. If the image is larger than 80KB, Read it in chunk and update the field on the server with the chunk. The data type for this field should be the varbinary or image sql datatype.

To retrieve this image for display, you have to create an ashx file which implements IHandler Interface. Store the image from the database in the ashx file and let the control that would display the image point to the ashx file as the image url.

Storing images on database gives more control over the management of those images, and enhances bulk update of the database. I recomend storage of images on the server.

NOTE:
If you want the code that would do the storage and retrieval of images on a database, you may patronise my components. I have a component that does that on sale. The present implementation is on dot Net framework 2.0 and sql server 2005. It goes for $200.00.

Programming / Re: Nigerian Coding Competion by ucard: 11:44am On Mar 23, 2007
How factual can one be.

If you name any company, the first thing it does is to remove the software from it systems, possibly reformat or discard all the hard disk. The next step is to file a case against you for character defamation.

What prove have you got? You lose the case and pay dearly for it. On the other hand, a prove is otigba. Pirated software are sold in the open. The police, Government, you and I see it. People patronize them heavily and they call it business.

I almost went mad when somone informed me over the phone that my eLibrary software is being sold at otigba for #150.00.

What can I do.

A coding competition will definitely be embraced by most programmers. However, I feel it should be planned in such a way that it will accommodate most of the world's widely used object oriented programming languages.

Industry Stake holders should also be made to participate in the event. It should not just be for a 'paltry price', but serve as an avenue to discovering talents that will change the face of the software development sector in Nigeria.

I would also like to use this medium to ask all stake holders, programmers and investors alike, to desist from the use of pirated softwares.

The greatest challenge the software development sector in Nigeria, is facing is software piracy. Yes! most of the acclaimed software industries in Nigeria are using pirated softwares.

If you steal another persons work, somebody will steal yours too.
