The qualification scandal that has enveloped the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Dino Melaye, has deepened.

Documents obtained exclusively by Saturday PUNCH through painstaking and thorough investigations showed that the embattled senator has a Bachelor of Arts certificate in Geography from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

The senator, apart from bagging a third class, also possesses a diploma certificate from the University of Jos.

However, the senator only has a statement of results from ABU. And not only that, checks at the university revealed that it only offers B.Sc. Geography and not B.A. Geography as reflected on Melaye’s statement of results.

Melaye’s trouble began on Monday, March 20, 2017 when an online news medium, Sahara Reporters, in a tweet alleged that the senator did not graduate from ABU for his first degree, against his claim that he studied Geography in the prestigious institution.

The news medium also alleged that Melaye, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory, bribed his Head of Department, who assisted him to forge his transcript.

In a series of tweets via its Twitter handle, @SaharaReporters, the online news medium said some lecturers in the Geography Department insisted that Melaye did not graduate from the department and that his name was not on the graduation list because he failed five compulsory courses.

Following the report, which gained traction speedily, Melaye dismissed the allegations, daring the news medium to sue him if it had authentic evidence to back its claims.

He took to his twitter handle and wrote, “Sahara Reporters, please sue me and ABU if it is true that I did not graduate from Zaria. Tell Magu (EFCC Chairman) to arrest and prosecute me.”

Melaye also boasted that he was currently a student in ABU pursuing his seventh degree, adding, “Go round all the UNIS (universities) I attended in digging more.”

A day after the news broke, Melaye, while speaking on the floor of the Senate, also addressed himself as an “authentic graduate” of ABU.

Meanwhile, when The PUNCH contacted ABU to verify the conflicting information, the institution’s Information Officer, Adamu Mohammed, promised that the institution would come out with its position on Wednesday, which it failed to do as of the time of filing this report.

Amid the controversy, documents obtained by Saturday PUNCH revealed that the senator had a statement of results with the logo of ABU.

The statement of results read, “This is to certify that Daniel Jonah Melaye having completed an approved course of study and passed the prescribed examinations as, under the authority of the Senate been awarded the Bachelor of Arts (Geography) with Third Class honours.”

The statement, issued by the Office of the Registrar, Academic Office and dated February 3, 2000, was signed by B.B. Mshelthlila.

There are, however, certain discrepancies that beg for more clarifications. For instance, in the statement of results, his name was given as “Daniel Jonah MELAYE.” However, checks by one of our correspondents on https://abu.edu.ng/ revealed that Geography is in the Faculty of Science and not the Faculty of Arts as reflected in the statement of results.

Also, in the senator’s NYSC discharge certificate, which was issued on July 8, 2001, his name read “Melaye Daniel” and not Daniel Jonah as shown in the statement of results.

Also, in the diploma certificate issued to him by the University of Jos on August 3, 2006, his name read “Daniel Dino Melaye.”

He was issued an Advanced Diploma certificate in Law, Security and Conflict Resolution. He finished with ‘Lower Credit’ on August 3, 2006.

However, in his Senior School Certificate in 1992, his name read ‘Melaiye Daniel Jonah O.’ with Melaye being wrongly spelt.

In the result, he had P8 in English Language, P8 in Mathematics, P8 in Geography, P8 in Chemistry, C5 in Christian Religious Knowledge, P7 in Economics, C6 in Biology and B3 in Agric Science.

When contacted again by one of our correspondents on his mobile telephone on Friday evening, the Information Officer, ABU, Mr. Adamu Mohammed, sounded hostile.

“Please, this is not official time; call me tomorrow, thank you, goodnight,” he said and hung up.

It will be recalled that in furtherance to his defence, Melaye had reportedly claimed that he obtained degrees from the prestigious Harvard University, London School of Economics and Political Science and a post-graduate degree from the University of Jos.

But in a swift response to an enquiry, Harvard University, in a statement from the Registrar’s office, on Thursday noted that Melaye was not a graduate of the institution as he only completed a week-long leadership seminar in November 2016.

The London School of Economics equally responded on Thursday, saying there was no proof on the institution’s database that Melaye obtained any degree from the school.

But on Thursday, he filed a N5bn libel suit against Sahara Reporters at a FCT High Court. Meanwhile, given the Senate’s decision to investigate the allegation and the uproar the report had generated, Melaye had since taken to the social media to exonerate himself of all the allegations.

Moments after he filed the suit, he took to the social media to post pictures of the cover and certification pages of his Master’s project, and a group picture of his days as a corps member, even though he was the only one not in uniform.

He wore a white T-shirt and blue shorts, adding that he served in Kaduna State in 1999. The caption on the picture read, “ABU 99 set at NYSC camp in KD. Me in blue shorts.”

Also, on Friday, Wikipedia, had edited Melaye’s profile to include ‘Certificate Scandal’, which briefly chronicled the issues surrounding the ongoing certificate brouhaha.

I don’t judge people. I don’t know how her emotions run but it is not nice at all. I know a lot of women won’t appreciate that. But at the end of the day, it is her life.

Can you do what she did?

No! I can’t. What ever I did at Big Brother House was just because I had no choice. That was how it was planned out.

Judging from your funny skits on social media especially Instagram, it is obvious that you are talented. How did you develop these skills?

I grew up in Benin but recently relocated to Lagos. I try to work on things around me, that is how I developed the core Benin accent. I am an actress so I can always switch characters.

How did your boyfriend react to your participation in BBN?

He didn’t like it because he thought that there would be‘shower hour’ moment. But I made him to understand what it really entails. So, he later supported me.

So, he didn’t react negatively when you came back?

Well, he was a little bit angry about it but he is a very understanding person. I had to explain to him over again and he took it.

There have been calls from people asking that the Big Brother show be shut down. What is your take?

It is not proper. I don’t think the show should be shutdown for any reason. It has entertained a lot of people and impacted positively on some others. Imagine, if not for Big Brothers, you won’t be here talking to me, so why should it be shutdown?

So, what is next for Ese?

Before Big Brother I was doing movies, commercials and modeling and recently, I added music to my career. I recently released my first single entitled, Super Love.

How do you intend to cope doing all these at the same time?

It is not easy but it is one step at a time. Right now, I am focusing on my music. I am hard working and consistent, so, it is going to be easy for me.

What inspired Super Love?

Well, I love to love. All my friends know me as a lover girl. If you listen to the song, you would understand what it is all about. I didn’t write it because of anyone but for the fact that I love to love. My song was inspired by love.

Have you ever been heartbroken?

Yes, of course but I believe in giving somebody a second chance. If someone broke my heart today, I would still believe in tomorrow. If someone injures you today, it will definitely heal tomorrow. Even if I am heart broken 10 times, I will find love again.

How did you overcome the heart-break so easily?

It was like telling myself that the person is not worth dying for. If he is meant to be in your life, he won’t allow you to go. And if he goes, you will definitely meet someone that is better than him.

What is your take on intimacy gadgets?

I don’t think it’s a bad idea having a intimacy gadget because it would reduce the cheating in relationships. But whenever you use intimacy gadgets, you should always tell your man about it. I don’t think there is anything wrong for a lady to have intimacy gadgets.

Do you have intimacy gadgets?

I have but I don’t use them often and that is because I’m not really a sex- sex kind of person and my boyfriend is really satisfying me. God please forgive me, I know it is a sin.

Can you marry an actor?

No! I can’t. I wouldn’t like to marry an entertainer. They hardly have time for one another. Shout out to all those who did and are enjoying it. I am a very jealous person; I wouldn’t like to watch my man kiss other women.

A Daura-based non-governmental organisation, Daura Emirate Youths Coalition, Katsina State, has warned Gov. Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State against inflammatory comments on President Muhammadu Buhari.

Alhaji Ali Rabe, the National Chairman of the coalition, gave the warning in Daura on Saturday when he addressed supporters of President Buhari at a rally.

The coalition organised the rally and a prayer session in support of policies and programmes of the current administration.

He described “the inciting comments being made by the Ekiti Governor as baseless and unguarded, capable of jeopardising the peace and tranquillity of the nation”.

He advised Fayose to use his position as a leader to offer useful advice, when necessary, instead of resorting to inflammatory and defamatory comments.

He said the coalition had respect for the constitution of the nation and constituted authorities, stressing that “we don’t expect Nigerian leaders to be making such utterances against the president”.

He said the coalition would continue to support the anti-corruption crusade of President Buhari, adding that “we will continue to be law abiding and demonstrate political maturity and tolerance in our deeds”.

Thousands of well-wishers converged on the palace of Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk, to express happiness on the wellbeing of the president.

The Suspended Vice President, Miss Aderoju Okunsanmi has been impeached by the Students’ Representative Council, University of Ibadan at the ongoing plenary session at the SRC Chambers.

In her words – My mobile phone has been ringing in the last few hours over my supposed impeachment by the Students’ Representative Council.*





*I am not surprised about the outcome of today’s sitting as my initial suspension did not follow the due process as recognized by the union’s constitution which categorically stated that allegations such as the ones levelled against my office should be referred first to the SRC disciplinary committee after which if found guilty an option of suspension can follow.*



Well since some part of the SRC are now politically driven, I was suspended without this process followed, a breach of the constitution by those who are supposed to be guarding it.





I must sincerely salute the council for taking the pain to scrutinize the financial dealings of our last Students’ Union week which was chaired by my office.



But I am also shocked that the council went ahead to debate the committee’s report and even pronounced an impeachment without an option of FAIR HEARING as the Nigerian constitution stipulates.



*The council today did not send me any letter of invitation to come and defend the final hearing of the allegations levelled against my office. Some honourables went ahead with libelous and slanderous defamation of my name without me be present to defend their claims.*



This does not happen in any part of the world and a prestigious university like ours should not initiate such

unethical practices.

I understand that because of my penchant of not bowing that to miscreants who label themselves Godfathers or because I refuse to part the union’s money with hooligans, I am been blackmailed in connivance with their friends in the council.



*Naturally I should have just let this go at least to make these unscrupulous elements feel they won but the support and sweat you put into my campaign, I should be accountable to you all.*



Because I foresaw this ahead, I kept receipts and important documents of the financial transactions of the SU week in a very safe place, no wonder they burgled my office while on suspension thinking they could cart away these documents.



The leadership of the SRC has acted in the best interest of Uites, they only want me to prove my innocence and I will.



I am already retrieving major documents, tellers and receipts and in few days will provide all to the council.

I will also make copies of this available to the Union of Campus Journalist



*I hope by so doing the SRC will follow the due course of inviting me to re-appear in the chamber with a review of an “unjust” resolution.*



I also wish to thank anyone including honourable members who have been objective so far in this case.



*But I repeat I will rather stay impeached than bribe, bow to or hail any supposed miscreants godfathers*.
