amedave: no body is against there growth, the issue is a medical team should be headed by a Doctor, note doctor's are not called consultant because of PhD only, do you know that most teaching hospitals don't have pharmacy student? how do you expect a pharmacist to head in that situation?? pls let these people tell us the truth, even in advance country how many times have u heard a pharmacist is heading an operation/surgery team. OK doctor done strike let them fill the void if they can

Pharmacists consultants are not based on PhD but on completion of residency programme in the postgraduate college of pharmacy, do you know that exists in Nigeria?

Sorry Sir. Walk into any pharmacy shop in any city or village in Nigeria and present your complaints from fever to palpitations, breathlessness or haemoptysis the pharmacist will bring out some drugs and sell to you - Despite his lack of basic pathology and clinical teaching of any branch of medicine they will never refer you to the qualified professional . We see this everyday even when pharmacists are not ( officially ) calling themselves Doctors. I can tell you that as soon as this crude nomenclature is accepted pharmacists will augment to their drug stores , operating theaters , Dental surgeries , delivery suites and oncology units. It may be okay for America , but certainly a bad idea for our country , our people , and the confused end user- the patient.

You don't even know what the pharmacy curriculum entails, please find out what the pharmacist is taught before he leaves school and see if your statement makes any sense

ok o... dr ulonwadi grin... hope that is all...lol. so, na only u sabi about life outside naija shebi? besides, with the internet, fools can google halftruth trash and type it here like its original. off goes his mouth again about advances and knowledge, people who know them actually read them and train, not letting their mouth do the work and i maintain that i think you are untried and untested in the field. anybody who takes pride in putting down his B.pharm colleagues is like a saboteur in the army... simple

Sweety I live in the US and Nigeria and while my B Pharm colleagues spent four years studying to get their Pharm D, I spent a year studying Pharmacy laws and ethics. I'm not putting anybody down but pointing out the reasons for the switch to Pharm D.

So you did 'one year conversion' so that you can write prescriptions and kill people? You are a very dangerous man. You are a licensed murderer. How dare you say because you peeped in the wards for one year, you are better than responsible B pharm?

Now that the NUC has reversed itself, you had better hand in that certificate. What hunger and desperation will drive you to play 'doctor' with real human lives when you know that you are not truly qualified? And you have the temerity to come to a forum like this and show your self?

I bet you take deliveries and do abortions in your pharmacy too

This is the exact same character I talked about in my post earlier and you people didnt believe me. Now tell us what other things you have been doing dr Ulowandi.

The NUC's "reversal" has nothing to do with already issued certificates, the funny thing about the whole Pharm D drama is that in 2007 when the NUC made its recommendation, Uniben obeyed the directive to the letter, nobody was given Pharm D straight but got the B Pharm And then PharmD. This year however the dean of the Faculty misguidedly issued only PharmD and that's the problem, the NUC has no problem with Pharm D degree but it has a problem with it as a first degree and if uniben returns to status quo then all the dust will settle

Pennywise: Its a pity that the UBTH that I hold in such high esteem has to be the place accommodating this unholy act. I know a good number of well placed pharmacists who graduated from that school and they will be horrified about this ignominy that is being perpetrated there. One that Lagos, Ibadan, Ife, UNN, ABU and any other pharmacy school of repute in Nigeria has refused to subscribe to.

I strongly recommend a probe of the originator of this program, its finances and prison terms meted out as appropriate. All the so called graduates of this program should be sought and the fake certificates recovered beginning with dr ULOWANDI.

Sweety unfortunately no one can recover my certificate, I wish I could give it to you so you can sleep better at night, alas its mine till I die.

so, the people calling MDs 'doctors' in the U.S are mad never watched a movie where patients were running after pharmacists shouting doctor shocked, like grey's pharmacology or 'house' pharmacists version...lol... only in nigeria, pure comedy at its peak grin. ok, dr ulonwadi or whatever, are u happy now?
and now, you're even looking down at your fellow pharmacists, maybe better trained because of a 'D' appendage, rich course ko, rich tea ni grin...hehehe... wahala dey for una course o, u guys have serious problems...bunch of confusionists. if we probe now, i bet we may find you wanting, self glorifying Arrow pointing at other people's deficiencies, maybe you should conduct an interview and find out what they think about you. besides where are my old friends, the B PHARMers grin i need their views about their deficiencies so i know who to run from

All your knowledge about life outside the country is from TV shows? And you're here putting mouth in professional matters? Puhlease go and learn first before you start yarning. My dear any profession that doesn't update itself will become obsolete before long, and with the advances in medical sciences only a fool would let the knowledge train pass him by. You're not a pharmacist, why you dey carry our matter for head.

joker5180: you guys seems to be confused. No nigerian university award " doctor of medicine" to any graduate, what they award is " bachelor of medicine, bachelor of surgery".
"Doctor of ........." like ' doctor of philosopy' is only awarded to postgraduate students who passed through PhD training.
Why are you introducing something that is not known in our university system?
The "Dr" used by MBBS graduates is a 'title' ( not a university certificate) awarded to them by their regulatory body.
If adding a 'title' to your name is the problem then get it from your regulatory body and while doing so do remember that DR is been patented by MBBS graduates.

the title "Dr" has been patented by MBBS graduates? Are you joking or do you regularly think with your anus?

Pennywise: I have no wish to burst your bubble. But to all the aspiring pharmD and second rate intellectually bereft pharmacists on this thread who feel they are nothing without a doctor tag I am afraid u will forever remain nothing. U cannot be redeemed.

The NUC will have no choice but to do the right thing. The concession that was extracted in the dark has come to light and a lot of interested parties are going to weigh in this time.

Undergraduate PharmD is an abuse to the doctor tag. If u are a pharmacist who want to be called doctor, get a PHD or a post graduate pharmD. Everybody cannot be a doctor full stop.

A doctor tag cannot clean the rot and intellectual decay among so called pharmacists. The decay that has made them abandon what in other climes is a noble and respectable profession preferring to hire out certificates to illiterates for a fee so that drug stores may be called pharmacies.

I am unaware of any serious drug compounding company local or international that will depend on Nigerian pharmacists. They are brought from without.

Its a pity pharmacy no longer attract the best and brightest but only mediocres as I have seen on this thread. What a shame. Sadly you want to take that same mediocrity to a different profession when u are not fit enough to be pharmacists

A proffessor of pharmacy tries to remove the wool in their eye, but they believe he is doing that bc he doesnt want them to be called 'Dr'. An obvious result of low self esteem.

I just hope and pray that the crowd I have seen here is not a true reflection of today's pharmacists. Your language is poor and unbecoming, grammer is offensive and diction leaves much to be desired.

I wish you luck in your quest to be called doctors.

.

I noticed your serious hatred for Pharmacists na wa o, did you fail out of Pharmacy school? Uniben has been awarding B Pharm And Pharm D to its grauduates, the five year undergraduate course and the last year for conversion, unfortunately many of you do not know this and you keep exhibiting vocal diarrhoea. You claim not to be a pharmacist then why you carry our matter for head na? are you that jobless?

you mentioned that no drug companies rely on Nigerian pharmacists, how many of them do you know? There's no drug company in Nigeria today that depends on non nigerians for any aspect of their production, Swipha the only AFRICAN company with the most recent ISO certification has NO foreign production pharmacist. The funny part of your statement is that it is totally opposite of what really obtains in the real world.

It has been said no one truly has anything against pharmD. But the few mths u spent peeping into wards doesnt give u any advantage over Bpharm and certainly doesnt guarranttee u the Dr title. U have been lied to. U like the title so much u even add it to your username in an anonymous forum. U should be ashamed. I am sure the doctors here are perfectly able to defend themselves. They dont need me.

U have no business in the wards. U should be stripped of your escort priviledges at ward rounds since u, a helper now want to be master. Doctors will have u chained to your cubicle while Bpharms do big things in the pharmaceutical world.

If u as a PharmD dare call yourself Dr to me I will have u stripped and shamed and no pharmacist is coming to ur rescue.

Last time I checked MBBS is Bachelor of medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, if the medical doctor can be called Doctor even though he has a bachelors degree then why shouldn't the Pharm D holders have a right to answer whatever they want to. I personally believe only PhD holders should be called doctors, that's my opinion and I won't force it down anybody's throat or insult anyone who chooses to be addressed as such. I have a Pharm D from the University of Benin and I can tell you that, that degree makes a lot of sense and all pharmacists should ensure that they at least upgrade their degrees to Pharm D. The course content is so rich and the knowledge you gain beats B Pharm anyday. little wonder that the high level drug companies in naija scramble for uniben products. During my internship, I was appalled by the B Pharm holders from other schools I worked with and felt sad that they themselves didn't even know their deficiencies. However at the end of the day the most important thing is improved provision of health care to the man on the street, if the Pharm D can equip the pharmacist with the skills to achieve that aim, then only a lunatic would complain about the fact that the Pharmacist bears the appellation of Dr

Bros!!! I'll have to tell you sharrap for a second time. no offence.

With all due respect to the academia and the so called technocrats in pharmacy, They are probably good in pharmacy and pharmacology but they are poor administrators and policy formulators.

In Nigeria today, all pharmacists do is sit in the hospital dispensing drugs or set up a phantom pharmaceutical companies and start importing drugs from countries like Vietnam. VIETNAM for God's sake.

and This Pharm.D shit is all they could come up with? as a way of addressing the shortcomings of Pharmacy in Nigeria? Like seriously? This degree IMHO is a way of justifying their sitting in the hospitals. And will give them more impetus to keep drowning in mediocrity.

Canada still accepts B.Pharm as minimum requirement, even Vietnam. Yet their drug making industry is still active.

So spare me your rants and your grammar

Vietnam you are mentioning gives its manufacturing companies special tax waivers, minimal import duty and of course there's constant power unlike Nigeria where you have to provide your own power, pay exorbitant taxes, and even bribe custom officials to import your raw materials and when you finish producing the product, the yeye nigerians will tell you they prefer foreign drugs

Do u know each time a doctor enters the theater he is putting his certificate on the line? Meanwhile pharmacists screw up prescriptions all the time and then replace a wrongly dispensed drug with a smile? No courts. No judge ever get to hear.

In naija? which yeye certificate on the line? When a doctor makes a mistake its only that patient that is affected meanwhile the actions of one pharmacist can kill hundreds as was seen in the "my pikin" teething mixture saga
