Crime / US Customs Seizes $15,860 Undeclared Cash From Nigerian Couple by unclesoyo: 5:44pm On Jun 05, 2019
US Customs and Border Protection officers at Baltimore Airport have seized over $15,000 of undeclared cash from a Nigerian couple at the airport.

The Nigerians, according to reports, arrived from London but failed to declare the exact amount of money they had with them.

US Customs seize $15,860 undeclared cash from Nigerian couple

The couple had reported to CBP officers that they possessed $15,000. However, officers discovered an additional $5,850 in the woman’s purse.

The officers seized the $20,850 and then released $4,990 to the couple as humanitarian relief. The officers also released the couple to continue their visit, saving them from criminal prosecution.

The Nigerians were not identified in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

US Customs said it is perfectly legal to carry large sums of currency in or out of the United States.

However, federal law requires that travellers who possess $10,000 or more in currency or other monetary instruments must report it all to a CBP officer at the airport, seaport, or land border crossing when entering or leaving the country.

Customs and Border Protection officers are highly trained to uncover illicit activity and they are committed to enforcing the laws of the United States.

“Customs and Border Protection officers are highly trained to uncover illicit activity and they are committed to enforcing the laws of the United States,” said Casey Durst, CBP’s Field Operations Director in Baltimore.

“Unreported currency often can be proceeds from alleged illicit activity, or used to fund transnational criminal organisations and I commend our officers on this interception”.

CBP recently issued travel tips for international travel through BWI. Chiefly among those tips is for travellers to truthfully report all currency they possess to a CBP officer during inspection.

Consequences for violating U.S. currency reporting laws are severe; penalties may include seizure of most or all of the traveler’s currency, and potential criminal charges.

CBP uses a variety of techniques to intercept narcotics, unreported currency, weapons, counterfeit consumer goods, prohibited agriculture, and other illicit products, and to assure that global tourism remains safe and strong.

On a typical day, CBP seizes an average of about $290,000 in unreported or illicit currency along the nation’s borders.

Family / Girlfriend Sits While Boyfriend's Mum Sweeps - Nigerians React by unclesoyo: 11:05am On May 29, 2019
Twitter is currently buzzing as a story of a Nigerian girlfriend that sat while her boyfriend’s mum swept the room was shared on the platform.

A user on the platform Lord Fuad wrote that a man brought home his girlfriend to meet his mother and while he left her in the sitting room, his mother started sweeping but his girl did not assist her.

“This guy took his gf to his house. He left her in the parlour, went to the room. His mum was sweeping the floor, got to the girl’s place, she lifted her leg so the mum could sweep underneath. Was she right to do that?”

The move obviously was a test for the lady from the boyfriend’s mum, which according to the woman, must have been a bad 1st impression on the side of the girlfriend.

Nigerians however share mixed feelings over the issue and they didn’t hesitate to pour out their minds in the comment section.

See some comments we were able to gather:
A man identifid as Sean Johnson wrote:

All these girls can make mouth for Africa. Find the guy that fit your style and if you are helping the mum sweet, it won’t kill your self esteem in anyway. Have learnt on SM that those who say they can do this are actually the ones who do it

Melinda however said she would not sweep as well as the test was just a stupid one:

All this tests that mothers give girlfriends are stupid. The person that wants to marry me should know if it’s the 1st time I’m meeting the mother & she does this I won’t sweep. I’ll probably fake a call from my mum that I have to take outside and From there to my house

Dr. Chiemeziem shared his thought too:

She’s a visitor to that house for all I care, visitors deserve to be pampared.

Ebere said she would sweep and gave her reason:

I’ll take the broom and sweep not bc I’m obligated to but because I just think its courtesy one then because I’m even happy to be visiting and I don’t want to see myself as a visitor more than I should. Whether they’re testing their ancestors or not, mine is to be happy

In our culture it means you are not wanted in the home:

In my culture if someone starts sweeping, it means they don’t really want you in their house or at the least want you to leave. So I would be insulted, leave and never return.

Romance / It Costs Too Much To Have A Side Chick - Man Advises Other Men by unclesoyo: 10:36am On May 29, 2019
A twitter user Prince Donnell @PrinceDonnell_ while advising men to focus on their family, wrote that it costs too much to have a Side chick.

While stating that, Donnell mentioned that the phrase has been his daily creed and it has been guiding him to focus more on his marriage and business.

He wrote:

“It costs too much to have a sidechick!” one of his emphatic tweets reads. “I remind myself of that statement every single day to remain disciplined in my marriage and in my business,”

He then proceeds to break it down into five solid reasons why having a side chick is not something you should be considering.

1. You lose your family

The risk of having all the family you care about yanked away is one thing to think about every time you are tempted to go astray, Donnell opines.

“Not only would you lose your girlfriend/wife, but if you had kids, you would lose them too. I personally don’t believe there’s an orgasm great enough to trade for my family. Because family and legacy is all we have in this world. NOT WORTH IT!”

2. You lose money

“A side chick requires maintenance. Every dollar you spend on her when it comes to food, gifts, drinks, gas and etc.. you’re subtracting that from the investments that can be made in your business and the food that goes into your families mouths. NOT WORTH IT!” Donnell says in another tweet.

3. You’re wasting your time

“Believe it or not, your time is money. How much are you worth an hour? Let’s say $50 an hour. If you spend an hour per day with your side chick $50 x 7 hours = $350 dollars That’s a bad investment if she can’t help you double it. NOT WORTH IT!”

4. You lose respect

“These rappers make it look cool to jump from one chick to the next but if you look around, there’s not one person who would agree that it’s respectful to disrespect your girl/wife and family for a side piece. Even your side piece don’t believe that!”

5. You lose everything

“You lost your girl/wife. You lost your family. You lost money in so many different avenues. You’ll eventually lose your side piece because she’s just gonna end up being side piece for someone else. You lose respect. IT’S NOT WORTH IT KING.”

“When you have a Queen in your life, the best investment you can make is putting your time and energy into her. When you have a powerful woman, you have a powerful life because she’s a multiplier of EVERYTHING that YOU bring to the table.”

Romance / Man Cancels Wedding After Girlfriend Pours Hot Oil On His Cousin by unclesoyo: 9:41am On May 21, 2019
A Nigerian lady identified as Layemi on Twitter has shared a story of a man who cancelled his wedding plans with girlfriend after she poured hot oil on his cousin.

Layemi had engaged in a conversation with the man who is her friend. She was surprised he wasn’t married yet and was shocked when he told her his story.

In the course of their conversation, the man revealed that he nearly got married to a lady he had been courting for five years but he put a stop to their relationship few months before the wedding.

Read the full narration:

I had a long conversation with an older friend today, he’s in his mid thirties, he’s quite successful if we are defining it in Nigerian terms, he has his own house, cars, works with a good company, has his own business…. blah blah blah. Baba sha dey alright.

I asked him why he was still single even though he was ‘made’ already, for my own mind I already thought/concluded that he probably had behavioural issues cos I know people like him, he’s quite handsome so getting babes is not an issue for him.
He said he almost got married 3years ago, but he called it off few months to the wedding, I thought he was joking but his other friend confirmed it. He told me the reason and damn, it was crazy.

Apparently, they dated for close to 3years before he proposed to her, she was 5years younger than him, he had known her since she was a teenager. He said when they started dating, his cousin was against it, she said her friend was too rude and he would regret it. He did!

Aunty was rude, disrespectful, saucy, didn’t have regard for anyone except him, he said she could start a fight with a child for been too close to him, none of his friends liked her, he said when they moved in together, People hardly came to his house. Lol

I asked him why he would date someone like that to the extent of marriage, he said at the beginning of their relationship, *sturvs* happened and he felt responsible for her and whenever he tried to end the relationship, she would bring it up and guilt trip him into staying

According to him, she became calm after a while, because he tried to please her all the time. So their relationship was smooth and he proposed to the chagrin of his family and friends. he said he’s quite stubborn so nobody could talk him out of it.

Few months to their wedding, his cousin came into the country from the abroad and decided to stay with him, he said they were very close and the bruv hadn’t been in the country for a while, he said his babe grumbled about it but he ignored her.

He said his cousin was probably the meekest person he could ever meet in his life, Baba was too nice, stayed out the way and always minded his business in the house, but his babe always had something to complain about, he said at this point she was starting to irritate him

The day kasala busted, he said he came home from work quite late and he didn’t meet his cousin at home, he asked his babe and she muttered some things under her breath but he was too tired to ask and he assumed that his cousin probably went out......

Crime / How To Stay Safe In Nigeria – Man Gives Hints Amidst Rising Insecurity by unclesoyo: 5:28am On May 21, 2019
A Nigerian man has written an enlightening piece on how to stay safe in Nigeria, especially amidst the increasing rate of insecurity across the country.

According to the man, the people closest to you are the ones that should be watched the most and rapt attention should be given to this set of people since they understand your weak points and movements and likely to divulge such information to outsiders who then come in to attack you.

He gave a long list on how to stay safe in Nigeria and it is quite informative.

Read Below

PMO SPEAKS!

Dear All,

With the excessive rate of kidnapping and armed robbery in Nigeria today. For our personal safety and security , Those closest to you are the most likely to know your weak points and are more likely to be tempted to do you harm. Until we get a proper public security system, you have to greatly supplement yours by being proactive.

1. Did you register the Maid, Drivers, Nannies, etc., in your homes with the relevant agencies such as the Police or Neighbourhood Vigilante/Security groups?

2. Do you have the photographs of your Domestic Staff?

3. Do you attend your Estate / Street meetings or are you so reserved that you have no relationship with your neighbours and too busy to attend meetings?

4. Do you have a WhatsApp group for residents only for emergency messages such as when a neighbour is being attacked or robbed, a fire incident, a neighbour is critically ill and needs urgent help and other emergencies?

5. Do you know that your Cook, Nanny, Driver, Steward, Maid, day care center handlers or lesson teacher, etc., could be HIV positive? He / She can have Hepatitis B or even tuberculosis?

6. What will it cost you to do a medical test for them before you employ them?

7. It is your life that is in danger if you engage a sick victim without knowing their medical history.

8. That house help you get yearly from an agent, have you ever bothered to check where the agent lives or whatever job he does?

9. Do you know the house help he gives you could be a thief, hired killer or kidnapper?

10. Do you know that your personal Driver could be a wanted person by the Police in another State for theft or kidnapping? Have you done a check on him with the Police and do you have a 5×7 photograph of him?

11. Never allow your daughters get too familiar with Drivers. Especially when they are below 16 years of age.

12. Drivers must never be allowed to take your children to school alone. There must always be a female adult in the car.

13. Do you know that your Driver could be hypertensive, have Hbp, poor eye sight or he could have an enlarged heart and not fit to drive?

14. Is your security guard a citizen or a foreigner from Niger, Chad or Benin Republic? How did/can you confirm that? If he is a foreigner, is he registered by the requisite organization and eligible to work here?

15. Never talk about money transactions or cost of your jewelries or valuables in the presence of your Domestic Staff.

16. If possible, never allow house help clean up your room when you are not at home. It is a time they search your room to know where valuable things are kept and waiting for the right time/opportunity to operate and run away.

17. Most theft incidents usually have in-house informants. Please note that the longer your Domestic Staff work with you, the more dangerous they can be.

18. Are you aware that the Domestic Staff monitor your movement? It is good to monitor your Domestic Staff – do you do same? Sometimes go home or office when they least expect you.

19. You must always ensure that all gates leading into your house is checked and secured every night.

20. Criminals are deadly, as they wait for a time to strike when you least expect and they are hardly ever thought to be the suspect.

21. Get a CCTV system installed in your home and monitor it at intervals – even if it is a quick/fast replay after work hours.

Being conscious of your environment helps your safety. Let’s improve our security consciousness.

Many residents have taken to social media to complain on the damage caused by heavy rainfall in Lagos State today, May 20, 2019.

The state is a familiar mess during rainy seasons as many parts are submerged in flood due to a terrible drainage system, causing difficulty for motorists and residents of different parts of the state.

The same was the story when it rained in the early hours of Monday, leading many to take to social media to voice their displeasure with the persistent problem.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) reported earlier in the day on the collapse of two buildings, one in Abule Egba and the other near Ladipo Bus Stop in Oshodi.

“A building consisting of 4 rooms built on the fence of house 13 Erinjiyan Drive off Alhaja Mulika street had collapsed due to heavy rain,” the agency disclosed.

And also The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported on flash floods immediately after the rain in Ijaiye inward Meiran.

The rainfall also fell some trees in the state with some of them falling on the road and worsening the traffic problem. LASTMA officers had to cordon off a road on Alfred-Rewane to remove a tree that had fallen on a car, The Pulse reports.

Some resident of Badagry also took to the Express road in protest on the bad state of the road leading out of the country to Benin Republic.

Residents of the state however took to Twitter to complain about the problem with some calling on incoming governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to make it a priority after he’s sworn in next week.

Health / My Fight With Depression - Man Shares Secret On How To Overcome by unclesoyo: 9:09pm On May 19, 2019
A Nigerian man has taken to Facebook to give a narration on his fight with depression that has taken over his life since last year.

The man identified as Michael Nwanator wrote that he fights depression by sticking to what makes him happy only and whenever uncomfortable thoughts come into his mind, he simply moves away from where he is to where he can derive happiness.

MY CURRENT FIGHT WITH DEPRESSION

Last year, April 2018, my depression got to a suicidal level, I turned to a walking corpse. I nearly took my life if not for my mum’s tears and her heart melting words. I nearly had heart failure, but God preserved me for a greater work ahead on earth.

This year, depression came back again. As I am typing this, I am fighting depression for some time now. It may surprise you because it never reflect on my posts, yeah that’s because I have figured out a way to fight it to a certain extent.

Depression is so bad that some times I feel like running away to an unknown place where there’s no human being, so that I can only interact with nature.

At some certain points, I lose interest in almost everything. I am a fan of Star redler beer, those who are in this ship knows the feeling when you take cold star redler. Mehn the feeling is out of this world after a hectic day at work. Some times I will approach my favorite and the only beer I drink, it taste like poo. Yeah! That’s the extent depression can go.

Some times I am online in the mid-night not because I am doing something, but because I couldn’t sleep. I just can’t sleep without the influence of alcohol or pills.

Below is how I have been giving depression a blow like we are wrestling.

Secret: Eat, drink and do whatever makes you happy. When the thoughts wanna cloud my mind, I leave my current location to somewhere where I will eat and drink good things of life.
I am a fan of native food and palmwine.

Attached was how I gave depression a blow last weekend somewhere in Nigeria. I am an adventurous person, this gave me an edge in this fight against depression.

As I Chef, I needes to eat something that will make me happy so I went to their market and stumbled upon this animal I don’t know the name. I have forgotten the name the guy called it. As an Igbo man and Ozo title holder lol, I said to my self, this buddy must go down with me. I had to beat the price and returned with it. When I got to the house, I discovered a hidden talent, I was able to get rid of the hairs with dried plantain leaf because the woods were all wet due to rain.

As a Chef and a foodie, the rest was history.

My family do not know that I am currently depressed. Only two good friends of mine knows. One in Edo and one here in Calabar. Their encouragement keeps me going too. If you’re depressed, talk to a reasonable person. There’s light at the end of the tunnel, NEVER GIVE UP to the fight. The future belongs to those who don’t give up.

Try as much as possible not to be in a lonely place. If the thoughts come, leave where you are immediately and go to a friend’s place or a place where you can have fun. If the thoughts settle on you, that’s where your favorite food will taste like a poo. Just don’t let it get there.

I strongly believe that some day I will have my life back to normal, I just wish I have supernatural powers to fix what got me into this stage. This weekend, the fight continues somewhere in Calabar.

……………………………………………………
If you’re fighting depression like me, kindly share the ways you have been handling it.

Celebrities / I Have Attempted Suicide – Betty Irabor Writes On Judging Others by unclesoyo: 7:23pm On May 19, 2019
Betty Irabor while giving her thoughts on the recent suicide trend across the country, has revealed that she once attempted to take her life and no one should be judged for taking such actions.

While sharing the message, she mentioned that since no one understands what the victims had been passing through, then they shouldn’t make assumptions on how they should have acted.

She wrote:

SUICIDE!!! Don’t label or judge what you do not understand. If you haven’t walked in a man’s or woman’s shoes you cannot make assumptions about what they do or why they do it.

At the time I attempted suicide , I was sick and in pain. There was a volcano somewhere inside of me that needed to erupt and suicide seemed like an option to avoid the eruption.Don’t trivialize anyone’s pain just because it’s not physical and you cannot see it.

Crime / Facebook Users React To Man Who Asked On How To Kill A Sick Patient by unclesoyo: 7:03am On May 19, 2019
In what can be described as a rather disturbing post, a Facebook user has asked his colleagues in a group on how to kill a sick patient, and the response has been quite surprising.

The man, who did not state if he was a medical personnel – of course, a medical personnel would not ask such questions on the internet – wanted to know the kind of substance one could inject into a sick patient to bring death.

He wrote:

What kind of substances can be injected into sick patients to cause death?

And when you would think others would query him on why he needed such information, most respondents never did that, they rather gave him suggestions on the kind of lethal substance that could be used.

See reactions:

*** Air, its why you shouldn’t have large bubbles in an IV line.

*** Who is doing the injecting? Medical professionals would have access to drugs that can kill, while a lay person might just inject some kind of poison or street drug. You should read W Good Nurse. He was a serial killer that used insulin to kill hundreds of patients

*** Chemo has a 98 percent failure rate. I wouldn’t let them use radiation on me 9 years ago and won’t let them use it on me 9 year from now. It kills everything; good and bad cells. Ya injected in sick or healthy patients it’ll kill.

*** A vile of rotted chicken liquid. Causes sepsis and a slow death

*** Why do you want to kill your parents or whoever because of the sickness? Only God Almighty kills

*** An empty syringe (air) results in a heart attack

*** antifreeze, insulin will kill you, an air bubble, and Visine (drops for the eyes) can kill you

But since it was a writers’ group, we are of the opinion the man was seeking idea on how to kill a fictional character.

Crime / Do Not Resist Arrest Even If Illegal - Nigeria Police Warn Nigerians by unclesoyo: 3:38pm On May 13, 2019
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), in a sensitization post on social media, has cautioned Nigerians to never resist arrest by police officers even if they perceive the arrest is illegal.

Noting that arrest situations can easily turn violent if not well handled, the Force warned Nigerians that resisting arrest, which is an offence on its own, can portray the subject as a hostile citizen and the situation may escalate into an unfavourable one.

Read the Full Statement below:

Arrest situations can easily turn violent. If not properly handled, it can portray you as a hostile person or give the impression that you are resisting arrest which on its own constitutes an offence, therefore:

Do not resist arrest. Even if you believe that the arrest is illegal or uncalled for, allow the arrest to take place without any incident. Note that resisting arrest could lead to an encounter that might result in harm, injuries and/or permanent disabilities or death to you or even the officer arresting you. It is therefore better to allow the arrest to take place without an incident and thereafter seek redress and appropriate sanction against the defaulting officer through a legitimate process.

Politely demand to know the reason for your arrest. It is your right to know. Also, where the officers have not disclosed their identity, courteously request their identity and where they came from, or the office where they work.

On arrest, it is within the powers of the police to do any of the following:

-Search your body, clothing and other belongings

– On the highway, the police may search your vehicle if you were in it at the time they stopped you.

– May ask you to write and sign a statement. It is however your right to decline, especially if you feel that doing so will implicate you.

– The Police may ask you to perform some tests such as walking in a straight line. This is so when they suspect you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, particularly in the absence of breathalyses or other forensic aids.

– Handcuff you if you are violent or show propensity to escape.

Always let the officers know your health challenge (if any) after arrest. This is important in case you may need immediate medical attention, particularly asthmatic patients, persons with history of epilepsy, high blood pressure, diabetes especially those on insulin etc.

You should immediately make full disclosures. *Demand to see the warrant of arrest where necessary (Note however that not all invitation/arrest requires a warrant). As a matter of fact, under our laws, the Police have wide powers to arrest without warrant in many circumstances.

Politely request that the officers allow you inform a trusted friend or a family member or a lawyer, soon after your arrest in order to avoid unnecessary apprehension as to your whereabouts or safety.

If the arrest requires the officer to conduct a search on you, demand to see the Search Warrant and comply with all legitimate instruction during the search (Note that there are a lot of instances where a policeman can search you with or without warrant)

You may politely request that the officer be searched before searching you. Often times, this helps to allay fears that someone may be trying to “plant” incriminating items on you or implicate you in any other way.

Don’t obstructively interfere or intervene when a third party is being arrested. Be careful as you may not know the details and seriousness of the charge against the person. *Do not use your phone indiscriminately while being arrested.

Willingly follow the officers to the station. It may be indicative that you have nothing to hide. In addition, this voluntary action of yours will eliminate any possibility of the arresting Officer resorting to the use of “Minimal or Reasonable force” to elicit your compliance.

On a lighter note, but also seriously speaking, every encounter with the police, including an arrest/invitation scenario is an opportunity to learn more about the Police, the security community, ur rights and privileges & make friends with them. Please make effective use of it!

Celebrities / Runtown: Saving To Exit The Country Is Now The Nigerian Dream by unclesoyo: 3:21pm On May 13, 2019
Singer Runtown, in a write-up published in a national daily newspaper, wrote about Nigerians saving up to leave the country, which he termed as the Nigerian dream, in its modern definition.

The singer, in the article in The Guardian, decried the rate of police brutality across the country and called for an end to the oppression the poor.

See the full piece below.:

It’s been over two months since Nigeria’s general elections and the tension that is borne out of vigorous political campaigns and a tussle for power has died down. Depending on who you ask, one vote at a time, the people have determined the fate of every candidate that vied for office and in a couple of weeks, newly-elected leaders will be sworn into office across the 36 states of Nigeria.

Imperative for incoming leaders, both elected and appointed, to note is that there is a hanging duty to deflate the rising tension that stems from police brutality and an urgent need to make Nigeria livable for the youth. As it appears, saving up enough money to exit the country has now become the Nigerian dream. It has been said that the country loses a worrisome number of doctors to the UK, US and Canada every year and what’s worse is that the Nigerian healthcare system is in dire need of doctors.

This harrowing loss of bright thinkers and skilled individuals transcends the medical world. I think about Tanitoluwa Adewunmi, the 10-year-old Nigerian boy who recently became a chess champion in the US after fleeing Nigeria with his parents over terrorist attacks by Boko Haram in the north. What would have been his fate had his parents not sought asylum in the US?

My heart has recently been replete with rumblings as a result of fear. Fear for my safety and perhaps more intense, the fear of losing a loved one to what has now become an unceasing demonstration of negligence by some officers of the Nigerian Police Force.

As a young Nigerian who very well fits the description of what members of the now controversial anti-cultism/robbery unit of the police force, SARS (known for perpetuating this menace) consider a target, I occasionally feel uneasy. I am a player in the country’s entertainment sector and the nature of my job causes me to appear “unconventional”. My hair is sometimes braided and sometimes blown out. Many times, I move around with a laptop, ride in a fancy car and yes, I own an iPhone which according to several victim/witness reports, makes me an instant suspect to the police.

Lucky me, I belong in the class of people who can sometimes afford special security. But it is puzzling that these days, we are pushed to sometimes hire men of the force to serve as security and protection against fellow officers. Some of my colleagues have been victims of police intimidation and I can only imagine the blistering degree of brutal treatment that everyday Nigerians are subject to. On days when I can’t afford special security, what becomes my fate? Do I have to commute by public transport, put away the devices that serve as tools for my everyday dealings or cut my hair in a bid to feel safe?

It is true that the country isn’t free of offenders. Agreeably, Internet-based crime is at an all-time high. But very needful to note is that legitimately conducted internet-based businesses are also at an all-time high. Smartphones and laptops have become indispensable tools. As it is in other parts, young Nigerians are using the internet as a tool to amplify their creativity, access boundless meaningful information, champion game-changing ideas, scale up their start-ups and by extension, create jobs.

Given the reality of today’s digital-driven world, law enforcement agencies must begin to deploy intelligence-driven tactics to carry out just and effective policing. Criminal detection should not be conducted solely based on a person’s appearance. Innocent young Nigerians should not be harassed, brutalized or worse, murdered over unimaginable reasons like owning a fancy smartphone or wearing an exotic hair-do.

I have had series of meditations over the recent killings of innocent young Nigerians like Kolade Johnson and the guiltless young lady, Ada Ifeanyi whose lives were cut short by men of the force to the ludicrous term, “accidental discharge”. A number of peaceful protests have been held and an array of anti-police-brutality campaigns have been launched across social media. Promises to restructure the police force have been made – but our reality suggests that no sort of reformation has taken place.

I manage to tell myself every day that the activities around the recently-concluded general elections is perhaps responsible for swaying the attention of the government because her silence amid the outcry of Nigerians has been very loud. The people are being pushed to the wall and choked against it. There is an urgent need to curb this menace before we find ourselves in an avoidable national catastrophe.

Growing up, we were told that the police is our friend but as the years go by, this promise has become more and more far fetched. Although my spirit is enraged, my message isn’t that of outrage, it is one of faith. This is not an easy call, but I admonish everyone to choose hope because I know that the alternative is one that will leave us all in disarray.

In truth, my faith is shaky, but I look forward to a time when the sight of an armed officer will no longer inspire fear. A time when Nigeria will no longer lose its human assets and forward thinkers to other countries as a result of low pay, lack of infrastructure and general neglect. A time when elected leaders will uphold the integrity and deploy empathy.
