Sports / Ahmed Musa And Co Denouce Fasting For Football: by valerie011: 12:22pm On Aug 09, 2011
The Muslim players in the squad will no longer observe Ramadan on match days in their bid to win the competition and will confront England with a fully fit team on Wednesday

When the Nigeria Under-20 squad confront England for a quarter-final ticket at the Fifa World Youth Championship 2011 in Armenia, Colombia on Wednesday, they will be firing on all cylinders.

The four Muslim players in the squad who were observing the holy Ramadan fasting period have decided not to fast on match days in order to preserve their fitness and maximise their strength.

Star forward Ahmed Musa, who has scored three goals, captain Ramon Azeez, forward Abdul Ajagun and defender Ganiu Ogungbe have decided to buy out their fast, an Islamic ritual which involves paying to feed 60 people on any day that the faithful is unable to observe the injunction.

Saudi Arabia, their opponents in the last game, have had their fast bought out by their federation according to a report by The Punch.

In what must be a delight for the coaching crew, John Obuh has now set his sights on defeating the young England squad in their next game. The English have not scored a goal in the tournament as they drew their three group matches en route to the knock out stage.

“Our focus is now on the England game on Wednesday. As much as we respect all the teams left in this tournament, we hope to win to qualify for the quarter-final,” Obuh was quoted by the newspaper.

Nigeria will go into the game confident of their scoring abilities having found the back of the net 12 times and conceding just twice in their bid to finally win a gold at the competition after two previous runners-up titles.

Sports / Nigerian Footballer '' Olubayo Adefemi'' Dies In A Car Crash: R.i.p Bro by valerie011: 12:14pm On Apr 18, 2011
Skoda Xanthi's Nigerian international Olubayo Adefemi has died in a car accident, Greek police said on Monday.

The 25-year-old defender lost control of his car on the Egnatia motorway while driving from Xanthi to Salonika in the Kavala region of Northern Greece.

The former Rapid Bucharest player was on his way to finalise details of his wedding when the accident happened, police said.

Adefemi signed for Xanthi last summer and made 24 appearances for the club, scoring twice. He has also played three times for Nigeria.

"The Super League and the entire Greek football family would like to express its deepest condolences and sympathy for the family of Olubayo Adefemi who died tragically in a car accident," league organisers said in a statement on Monday.

Politics / Buhari's Past Sins, Ribadu's Past Sins, Jonathan's Past Sins by valerie011: 9:36am On Apr 02, 2011
This thread is opened to discus some of the sins the presidential candidates have committed and why we should not vote for them. if you have any, kindly post and explain what sins each of the candidates has committed and why they should not be voted for.

For me:
why I will not vote for Buhari but Goodluck

'' The supporters of Buhari should tell Nigerians how many megawatts of electricity he added to the National grid during his 2yrs dictatorship. It is on record that No single megawatt of electricity was added to national grid from 1979 till 1999. How many kilometers of road did he construct in the south vis-a-vis the north when he was PTF chairman? Buhari truncated democracy in 1983,initiating a high handed disciplinarian govt, which he was not man enough to sustain, thereby leading to coups and counter coups, causing us to waste 16yrs of our lives wandering in wilderness under dictators. While millions of Nigerians were in pains it was convenient for Buhari to romance with Abacha as PTF chairman. Perhaps we would have been celebrating 32yrs of democracy if he had allowed the checks and balances in democracy to gradually clean the system. It is even more shameful that 32yrs after ruling this country he could still aspire to rule again. This is an indictment on the youths of this generation. All the youths posting comments in support of his candidature should bow in SHAME. It is on record that the PDP inherited 1500 megawatts in 1999 but this has now shot up to 3800 megawatts with many other power plants in various stages of completion. I was a strong critic of the PDP until Jonathan came into power with exceptional humility, sincerity and well thought out plans to solve pressing problems. He demonstrated enormous goodwill in reforming INEC to a status we are all proud of 2day. The lingering fuel scarcity immediately disappeared, our refineries are back to work, etc My appeal is for us to access these candidates dispassionately and vote wisely.
Nairaland / General / Miracle' Pastor Calls For A Break by valerie011: 5:50pm On Mar 28, 2011
A Tanzanian pastor has asked people to stop going to his remote home for a "miracle cure" after thousands flocked there, causing chaos in the surrounding area.

Rev Ambilikile "Babu" Mwasapile, 76, says he does not want any new arrivals until after Friday 1 April, to let the crowds die down.

Local media report that about 52 people have died while waiting to see him.

A BBC reporter says the queues to see him stretch for 26km (16 miles).

Belief in magic and the powers of traditional healers are widespread in Tanzania.

Some witchdoctors say that the body parts of people with albinism are effective when making magic charms, leading to the killing of dozens of albinos in recent years.

In 2009, the government outlawed all witchdoctors and traditional healers.

But on Monday, Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said he would not take any action to stop Mr Mwasapile's activities.
'Safe to drink'

Mr Mwasapile's concoction is made from herbs and water, which he sells for 500 Tanzanian shillings (five cents; 3p).

When she visited Mr Mwasapile's home near the northern Loliondo town recently, the BBC's Caroline Karobia found 6,000 people waiting to see the retired Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT) pastor.

They are waiting for days by the roadside and outside his home in Samunge village without shelter, clean water or toilets.

As word has spread in the past month of the pastor's supposed ability to cure any ailments, some people have even been taken out of hospital by their relatives who believe they are more likely to be cured by Mr Mwasapile.

Some of these have died before seeing him, while others are reported to have died after taking his concoction.

Health Minister Haji Hussein Mponda told the BBC that tests had shown that the mixture was safe for human consumption.

He said tests were now being conducted to see if it has any medicinal properties.

Extra police have been deployed to the area to control the huge crowds, some of whom have travelled from neighbouring countries such as Kenya and even further afield.

Mr Mwasapile asked for the break following a meeting with local officials.

Politics / Scientists Use Mathematics To Predict '' The End Of Religion" by valerie011: 5:45pm On Mar 22, 2011
Religion may become extinct in nine nations, study says

A study using census data from nine countries shows that religion there is set for extinction, say researchers.

The study found a steady rise in those claiming no religious affiliation.

The team's mathematical model attempts to account for the interplay between the number of religious respondents and the social motives behind being one.

The result, reported at the American Physical Society meeting in Dallas, US, indicates that religion will all but die out altogether in those countries.

The team took census data stretching back as far as a century from countries in which the census queried religious affiliation: Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland.

Nonlinear dynamics is invoked to explain a wide range of physical phenomena in which a number of factors play a part.

One of the team, Daniel Abrams of Northwestern University, put forth a similar model in 2003 to put a numerical basis behind the decline of lesser-spoken world languages.

At its heart is the competition between speakers of different languages, and the "utility" of speaking one instead of another.

"The idea is pretty simple," said Richard Wiener of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, and the University of Arizona.

"It posits that social groups that have more members are going to be more attractive to join, and it posits that social groups have a social status or utility.

"For example in languages, there can be greater utility or status in speaking Spanish instead of [the dying language] Quechuan in Peru, and similarly there's some kind of status or utility in being a member of a religion or not."

Dr Wiener continued: "In a large number of modern secular democracies, there's been a trend that folk are identifying themselves as non-affiliated with religion; in the Netherlands the number was 40%, and the highest we saw was in the Czech Republic, where the number was 60%."

The team then applied their nonlinear dynamics model, adjusting parameters for the relative social and utilitarian merits of membership of the "non-religious" category.

They found, in a study published online, that those parameters were similar across all the countries studied, suggesting that similar behaviour drives the mathematics in all of them.

And in all the countries, the indications were that religion was headed toward extinction.

However, Dr Wiener told the conference that the team was working to update the model with a "network structure" more representative of the one at work in the world.

"Obviously we don't really believe this is the network structure of a modern society, where each person is influenced equally by all the other people in society," he said.

However, he told BBC News that he thought it was "a suggestive result".

"It's interesting that a fairly simple model captures the data, and if those simple ideas are correct, it suggests where this might be going.

"Obviously much more complicated things are going on with any one individual, but maybe a lot of that averages out."
