We're still a few weeks away from Samsung officially unveiling its new foldable phone, but it's already sounding like it will be a significant improvement over the Galaxy Fold. At least, if the latest rumors are any indication. While we've already heard that the phone, which will reportedly be called the Galaxy Z Flip, will have a clamshell design, we now know a bit more about how that folding screen will work. The new details come from XDA Developers' Max Weinbach who reports the Z Flip will have the ability to "lock" at a 90-degree angle, which allows the bottom half of the phone to act as a kickstand. Apps, including the phone's camera, will be able to take advantage of this orientation, which sounds particularly useful for video calls or watching short videos. Weinbach also says the Flip will reprise another notable feature from the original flip phone era: ending phone calls by folding it closed. After warding-off its fair share of ridicule and snarky comments, Google's Digital Wellbeing is still very-much alive and doing perfectly well. It even now occupies, what seems to be, a permanent spot within AOSP and has been steadily trickling down to various other Android flavors. Clearly, it is going something right, seeing how Google has never been known to stick with services and features that don't fit its current vision and have dropped out of favor. The HTC EVO operates on Sprint's network. The process for programming an Android phone varies depending on whether you have a GSM or CDMA Android. The network technology depends on the cellular carrier. In the U.S., if a phone comes from AT&T or T-Mobile, it's GSM. If it comes from another carrier, it's CDMA. GSM Androids use a SIM card that stores the phone's number and network information. Programming the phone is simply a matter of swapping the SIM cards. CDMA Androids store the programming in the phone's memory. You program the phone by dialing a special programming number. The Samsung Galaxy S20 trio will be pricey, especially in its 5G incarnation. The first info on price comes courtesy of Max Weinbach, who is behind the recent torrent of S20 leaks. The (somewhat) good news is that the 4G versions will be cheaper. If you’re getting a 4G model, subtract €100 from the price. It’s not clear whether you’ll have a choice, though, countries where 5G networks are already live may only get the 5G models. Also, the price ranges represent uncertainty and not storage options – this is how much the phones with base storage are expected to cost. US Attorney General William Barr has asked Apple to unlock two phones of a Saudi man who carried out a mass shooting at a US base. He accused the company of not having "given us any substantive assistance", a claim that Apple denies. The tech firm has clashed previously with the FBI over requests to unlock iPhones belonging to terror suspects. Three sailors were killed and eight wounded in the 6 December attack by a 21-year old Saudi Air Force lieutenant. Mr Barr described the shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola as an "act of terrorism". "It is very important for us to know with whom and about what the shooter was communicating before he died," he said at a press conference on Monday. Technology which allows the police to gather data from some mobile phones or tablets without using a password will be rolled out from Monday. Police Scotland has spent more than £500,000 buying 41 desktop-sized machines which override encryption on devices. The move has already been delayed amid concerns the technology may be unlawful. The force insisted the devices would significantly speed up investigations. Phones now form a major part of criminal investigations and forensic experts in Scotland examine about 15,000 a year. According to a Reddit thread, the V50 began receiving the Android 10 update in South Korea for those enrolled in the Beta program last week. The changelog mentions some new features to the UI including pop-out window support, full gesture navigation support, and enhancements to the dual-display accessory. The camera app now separates camera and video modes and the Lock app has been removed. We’d hope that the Korean variant’s update would indicate that Android 10 is coming to the V50 in Western markets soon. The Cyrcle Phone is one of the more bizarre products on show at this year's CES tech expo in Las Vegas. While the smartphone giants are trying to make their devices fold and encourage the use of wireless headphones, this US start-up is focused on delivering a shape that it says is more "sensual" and has built in two headphone jacks. The project dates back to 2015 and has yet to get its software to match its form, but the company suggests the phone will finally launch in about a year's time. OnePlus is looking at bringing 'disappearing cameras' to a phone you could actually buy 18 months in the making It would make sense for OnePlus to want to use the technology in future handsets – after all, the brand spent 18 months developing the right kind of EC glass to function well enough to be used in a phone. OnePlus had to create glass that was thin enough to let the light through, but thick enough to be robust – as well as being able to change state from opaque to transparent as quickly as the camera app could open. This meant bringing the speed down from four or five seconds to just 0.7 seconds, as well as making the glass only 0.05mm thick. While those feel like boast-worthy specs from OnePlus, the level of engineering that’s gone into the technology means it will surely be brought to consumer devices if the cost and power consumption can be brought down to acceptable levels. One side benefit of the EC glass is that a neutral density filter is baked into the glass. These filters are used in photography to alter the wavelength of light, and OnePlus was extolling the virtues of using the opacity-changing glass to allow you to improve smartphone photography, bringing improvements in high-brightness scenes – and OnePlus confirmed that it’s looking at this capability as a future feature to develop for smartphone cameras. In terms of the EC glass being brought to a consumer device, there’s also an issue with smartphone camera sensors themselves – these already need to be quite thick in order to offer the necessary performance, and that’s led to the camera bump OnePlus is trying to eradicate. With that in mind, it’s hard to believe that the OnePlus Concept One phone has industry-leading camera sensors packed in. Some had criticised a decision to give her a "keynote" slot, saying other women had more expertise in the field. On stage, the US president's daughter suggested Americans' CV data should be stored and updated on their phones as a matter of course, to make it easier for them to apply for jobs. Apple and O2 have confirmed that one of the most popular iPhones is not working as it should on O2's network. The iPhone XR completely lost signal several times a day, some O2 customers said on Twitter. Many customers have been unable to make and receive calls or send and receive texts. They have also struggled to get a reliable 4G internet connection, making apps such as Facebook and Instagram redundant unless there is wi-fi. Weak signal "We're working closely with our partners to resolve an intermittent issue affecting some of our customers using iPhone XR," an O2 spokeswoman told the BBC. "We thank any customers affected for their patience." O2 declined to say exactly how many users were affected by the issue. Turning the phone off and on again temporarily fixed the problem, O2 said. The world’s biggest consumer technology trade show kicks off Tuesday in Las Vegas amid an escalating tech cold war between the U.S. and China. While new generation tech that has been the focus of China’s innovation efforts—like artificial intelligence and 5G—will be at the forefront of CES 2020, major Chinese tech players like Alibaba, Tencent, and JD.com are absent from the first major global tech event of the decade. The U.S.-China trade dispute is spilling into CES in spite of plans for the two countries to sign a “Phase One” trade agreement on Jan. 15 in Washington. A Chinese consulate and commerce ministry-backed station at the expo will offer free legal help to Chinese attendees, who have also been encouraged to carry documents certifying their intellectual property rights. IP theft has been a sticking point in trade negotiations. Escalatory U.S. policy against Chinese tech companies in 2019 has led to a new push in China to establish technological independence from the U.S.—a move that that will have major international repercussions, according to a Jan. 6 Eurasia Group report on top risks for 2020. “The decision by China and the United States to decouple in the technology sphere is the single most impactful development for globalization since the collapse of the Soviet Union,” the report said. A little over 1,000 of the 4,500 companies exhibiting at CES 2020 hail from China. Two years ago, one third of participating companies were from China, and last year it was more than one in four. The uncertainty brought on by political tensions between the U.S. and China as well as difficulties obtaining U.S. visas are contributing to the drop-off in attendance from Chinese companies. “Our company decided not to attend this year because we knew it would take forever to get our visa, if they don’t get rejected after all,” one Chinese A.I. chip startup founder told the Nikkei Asian Review. Of China’s top domestic smartphone makers, only OnePlus and Huawei appear on the CES exhibitor directory. Top name brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are absent. Artificial intelligence will be at the forefront of CES 2020, but China’s leading A.I. startups will be absent, including Megvii, SenseTime, and Yitu, which all landed on a U.S. government trade restricting “entity list” in October 2019 for their alleged involvement in a Chinese government campaign against ethnic minorities in Xinjiang province. Voice recognition company iFlyTek and surveillance company Hikvision, which were also added to the entity list in October, attended CES 2019 last January but will not be attending this year. The world’s most valuable startup, ByteDance Ltd., which owns popular app TikTok, will also be absent from CES 2020. U.S. senators have labeled ByteDance a national security risk and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. is currently reviewing its 2017 purchase of the app that is now TikTok. It'll be a while before TCL goes foldable It's true, the TCL foldable phone concept isn't ready to release soon. The hinge and foldable screen crease feels far from perfect, the software is buggy, and it includes no front-facing camera at the moment (though, no awkward notch cut out either). We did, however, like the prism back of the device. The hardware that was in our hands at CES 2020 was using Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 660 chipset and Android 9 Pie, so it's not on par with the company's TCL 10 series phones, which use the Snapdragon 700 chips. It's also not nearly as sleek as the Mate X due to heavy bezel and the screen size is smaller than the Galaxy Fold. But, again, this is a concept phone, and specs change and designs get refined all the time when smartphones are seen this early. Simply, its presence at a trade show means it can usher in an age of affordable foldable phones sooner than anyone had expected. This would address one of our biggest complaints when we had in our Samsung Galaxy Fold review: it cost too much. Even if you don't want the TCL foldable phone when it finally launches, it should still thrill you. Its presence is going to push the entire foldable phone market to compete, and that's a beautiful thing when the Galaxy Fold costs $1980 right now.
