And why would someone not want to simplify this whole process, by complicating it and introducing a foreign address or foreign passport?

I would wager that all couples having their other half abroad, have dual nationality. Or he/she would rather pay the extortionate visa monthly fees, when obtaining a passport is much easier and cheaper.....

For the sake of proving they are not local league vs international league aka I have arrived from the abroad......

That isn't a nice thing to say dear...some people do not have dual citizenship ( the original poster of this enquiry), some are ignorant that it makes no difference ( just like I was till I came to know from this forum). We're all here to know and learn more not to show off I believe.

Thanks for your message (lol! I almost wrote email). However, my partner hasn’t dual citizenship. Why can’t they run the security background check without having to force intending couples to pay 100k

As you stated in your response to veacon, these extortions that override the right path only makes the certificate highly questionable!

I just don’t get it....schemes to extort every time!

I honestly wonder! Please note that they won't force you to pay the waiver, but then again, truth be told, how possible is it to get through DSS to get that done.

My advice to you would be to see if you can get tru to DSS to get it done yourself or through a lawyer.

Nice but here is my worry. All over the world, it is customary, mandatory and even maybe legal to have the 21 - 28 days notice of the intended marriage after which the ceremony can be carried out. This notice period is to allow for any objections from the public or couple's family and also for investigation of the intended couple to be carried out to prevent fraud or forced marriage etc.

So when you say you have been told to pay a certain amount to by-pass this stage, are you not worried or concerned. Do you then not think countries like the UK are then right not to recognize marriage certificates from these registries in Nigeria??

Why not just follow the full and proper process to ensure that you and your spouse a married the right/correct way to prevent unforeseen issues in the future. This is just my 2 cents.

Still, I wish you all the best.

Thanks for your 2 cents, but please understand me, this isn't being done for me, it is their laid out procedure(they even have it on print)...I guess a means to cover up for the outrageous sum of N62050 they charge for the special license marriage.
After asking on this forum and finding out it makes little or no difference registering as a foreigner or Nigerian for my visa application. We decided to go for the 7days process because we don't have an extra 100k to give to anyone for no reason.

The system is flawed, the cost of a registry marriage all over Nigeria should be standardized but unfortunately, this isn't so.

Thank you so much!

But wth@DSS waiver 100k

This is ridiculous!

Ridiculous is an understatement... If your intended Spouse is also a Nigerian, I'll advise you to go for the 21 or 7 days notice. With the 7days notice, your intended spouse will have his/her foreign address registered instead of the Nigerian address but with the 21 days notice, he/she has to give a Nigerian address.

I think the whole DSS thingy is just a way to extort money.

Hi

Has anyone recently legalized union at the registry in Abuja? What were the requirements? Specifically for special marriage license...

Cheers

I'm currently about to have mine in Abuja, so had to go make enquiries. The process is quite different from what I read about the ikoyi registry.

For the special marriage license, you need the Intl data page of your intended spouse who stays abroad, visa page ( if applicable), his / her passport photograph, his /her birth certificate or declaration of age cert, your passport photograph, your birth cert, your local govt ID, affidavit of being single from high court for you both ( they talk you into getting that done for you @N2000 each), marriage cost is N62050 (because you can have everything done same day without the 21 or 7 days notice), a sum if N100000 for security clearance (DSS) waiver.

Wedding days are Tue, Thur, and Sat.

Hope this helps!

So sorry for the late response.
Yes we did the court wedding in Nigeria in ikoyi registry Lagos.
They made a little issue about him coming from ‘the abroad’ and having to pay more money for the court wedding, but they didnt care about his status in the Uk or if he was british( we used his Nigerian passport though).
You inform them about the wedding with ur intended date, and they post it on their notice board for 3 weeks or so before the wedding. During this time u fill out some forms and u do an affidavit that u and hubby are single. They will need passport photgraphs of you and hubby.
Don’t know if I have missed anything, but it was pretty straight forward.

Thank you so much, points noted.

I am thinking why dont you do the court wedding in Nigeria and just apply for spousal settlement rather than applying for fiancé visa which seems like a longer process to be settled in the Uk...#justmythoughtsthough

Its possible you didn't understand my post. The court wedding would of course be in Nigeria, and the visa application would be for spousal visa.
Thanks a lot, your thoughts are well taken!

If you are getting married in a local registry, I don't think they'd ask you for your fiance nationality (as long as your fiance is Nigerian by blood - And does not physically look white).

Just apply to get married in a local registry. You will get a marriage certificate. That is all the UK govt want to proof you are married.ANd yes, you can get married in october and apply for a visa in November.

I know this because I have been though this. But that was 8 years ago, not sure if the process has changed though. Just my 2 cent.

Your 2 cent is very informative and helpful, thank you so much, I appreciate it.
And No, he's doesn't look physically white...lol

He has the green and the burgundy, meaning he is Nigerian and British.......... The British constitution also recognises dual nationality.......
He should select Nigerian, not unless you want to pay DSS's tithe......

If you have all the documentations by November, don't see why any other factors should pose any problems.....

NB: Are you that keen to checkout?

Thank you so much for your response, it does help a lot. Yes dear, all the documentations would be ready by November.

I'm keen to check out ooo, it's been almost 3 years apart. I can't wait to be with him permanently.

But I got it!!

Praise be to God! And you guys for answering all the silly questions I asked. I came across this forum end of May, and got all the information I needed.

Please Dear, from your testimony, I presume your husband has Nigerian citizenship and your court marriage was done here in Nigeria.
Can you please fill me in on the requirements you fulfilled for the court marriage and where?
Thanks

Good evening all
Gurus in the house, please I need your advice on this issue. I intend to apply for settlement visa to join my fiancé in November and we intend to have our registry marriage in October.
However, my fiance has dual citizenship; British and Nigerian, We intended he went through the registry marriage as a British citizen but we're being asked for security clearance from the DSS or a fee of N100,000 to wave that requirement.

1. My question is, would my fiance going through the registry marriage as a Nigerian hamper my settlement visa application?
2. Having the marriage in October and applying for the visa in November won't pose any issues for us in the visa application, would it?

Thanks

That is the real issue with your application, without a strong tie to Nigeria your chances of getting a visa is very slim.

Your friend's sponsorship alone is not enough in this case as you can't prove that you will be coming back to Nigeria if given a visa.

Thanks for your response Justwise, I appreciate. However is there nothing else I can use to show ties to Nigeria besides the aforementioned ones?

Hello Justwise and other knowledgeable nairalanders on Visa matters.
Please I need your advice on the following questions bothering on Visitor visa application. I'm not completely a novice on visa matters though, as my masters degree was in UK.

A friend of mine is inviting me on a two weeks visit to the UK, all expense paid. My friend works in the UK and earns well so is capable of sponsoring my trip. However, I have the following questions:

1. Will it be ok with the ECO for my friend to sponsor the entire trip without my contribution?
2. Is there a minimum amount needed to enable my friend successfully sponsor the trip?
3. Is an invitation letter and sponsorship form required to aid my application?
4. Lastly, the issue of showing strong ties that guarantees my return, I'm yet to get a job, neither do I have any landed property to show strong ties, how do I go about this?

Any other advice necessary to make my application a smooth one will be well appreciated.
Thanks
