My Journey

My departure experience from Nigerian Airport was as usual, nothing ghen ghen. I had a stop over at Abu Dhabi and Perth, unknown to me Australia is really a big country cos it took me additional six hours from Perth to Sydney. I dare not make such mistake again

My Stopover experience? When I landed at the Abu Dhabi airport, the overzealous airport staff selected me out of the crowd, being the only black and a Nigerian, I knew what this was only a time wasting process started asking silly questions of why I was going to Australia and why I was studying the course I chose. Not even in Australia yet and I am going through all this, despite a valid student's visa.
A little clumsy at Perth Airport with all my goodbye nigeria luggage, cos you had to take a bus from the international to the local airport, thankfully i was able to get the Trolley Cart using the Aud coins I had on me because I had my currency changed at Abu dhabi.
Nothing remarkable at Perth Airport.

* What are the immigration rules to follow?
Do not bring growing seeds, anything that can be cracked like beans, nuts. Instead have them all blended and in air tight white bags. You can google Australia incoming passenger card to get familiar with their forbidden foods. Please declare every thing. I declared my wooden stick (omorogun). Have an address that you will be staying handy and also an Australian phone cos you will be asked to fill this in the form.

* How did you carry all that cash with you?
I had just $4000 us dollars, which was declared .

* Can you open bank account while still in Naija?
I opened a NAB account which I opened online in Nigeria, and they actually sent the welcome letter to my home address in Lagos. I had my handy eftpos card waiting to be picked up at my selected branch when I got to Australia.

* Which State/suburb did you settle in and why?
Just like most people, it is where you know someone that you feel comfortable to settle in. I settled in popular gbogbo ero in Liverpool, Sydney . You find a lot of migrants there

* Driving in Australia? How long can you use your Naija driving license before you get Aussie license?
Hmmmm. This one pass me. It took me a long while to get used to be comfortable driving, I used my Nigeria driving for a year then it expired, kept renewing the Nigeria International driver license yearly for 2 years, until I got the permanent residency then I had no choice but to sit for the dreaded driving test, almost had a heart attack in my preparation. I had to go for a crash driving lesson at the rate of 40 dollars per hr for 4 hrs in 2 weeks. Thank God for that, cos that Naija driving would have failed me woefully. I cannot risk the license taken at all.

* Where you live and why you like it or don't like it? Tips on choosing the right neighborhood, mortgage plans, proximity to work etc.
Levels changed after no more school fees, we had to move to a quiet neighborhood cos it is closer to kids school. There is really no tips, depends on how much you are willing to pay for the accommodation and proximity to school, station/bus stop, and work
Mortgage plan is seriously on the way, tired of the agent peering into your house during the house inspection not to talk of the liability called house rent.

* How easy was it to settle in, with your kids? How did you go about finding the right schools for them? What is their school system like for toddlers (age 5 and below)?
There is pre-school for 4years old
As a parent of little ones , at least a quarter of your income goes to child care. Damn, it was really expensive. Thankfully, we had couple of friends around that sometimes helped to care for our little ones, but remember it is do me I do you and this also comes with a bit of begging and often disappointment.

* Can a mother combine work and taking care of the kids? Easier if the kids are older, not less than 8 years. It is possible but one of the parents will have a flexible shift. Here in Australia, it is not mother thing, it is parent thing.

* Tips on how to cloth and cope with the cold weather
Easy, just like nigeria weather most times of the year. Thankfully, I visited a boutique in lagos before coming and got really beautiful clothes because they don't really have nice female outfits aside their jeans and tops, the classy quality ones are ridiculously expensive. Meanwhile you will get them at affordable prices in Nigeria, UK or America.

* How much does your family survive on in a month?
It is an expensive place, you cannot risk not getting a good well job.
By the way, I was scammed when I was new in town. Got employed by a guy but was not paid for my job, at least if he wont pay he will talk - I used the guy as a work reference to get my accommodation and my 2nd job which was a step to greater heights.

Praying for bountiful rain upon the land of Australia and Merry Christmas Everyone.

Hi Tonero123,

Renting an apartment in Aussie hardly works like nigeria. You will need to visit the place prior to signing the lease agreement. Moreover, you will not be available till February. The landlords love their money silly, and won't leave the apartments vacation. An option is to check Airbnb temporary stay and filter the price.

Tonero123:
Good day All,

I’m planning to move to Sydney by early February 2020, I will be happy if you guys can help me with referrals on accommodation please.

I have a family of 3 so I’ll need a 2 bedroom house or apartment in a family friendly area With affordable.

I will be happy if I can get contacts of people here residing in Sydney or agents in Sydney please.

I don’t know anywhere in Sydney so your guidance will really help me to make the right choice of a family friendly area in Sydney.

Thank you all and have a great weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions NSW 190 Nomination

Where can I find the NSW priority occupation list?
The NSW priority occupation list for the 2018-19 financial year is available for download from the NSW Department of Industry website.

Will there be a Stream 2 occupation list this program year?
No, only occupations on the NSW priority list for 2018-19 will be considered for NSW nomination this program year.

My occupation appears on the Department of Home Affairs Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, but not on the NSW priority list, can I still submit an EOI for NSW nomination?
Only EOIs with occupations that appear on the NSW priority list will be considered for NSW nomination.

I submitted my EOI last financial year, do I need to submit a new EOI for the new financial year?
EOIs remain active for two years. Your EOI will be considered within this two year period so long as your occupation is on the current NSW priority occupation list, and you meet the minimum 65 points requirement for the visa.

When does NSW send invitations to apply for nomination?
We send invitations to apply for NSW nomination ongoing throughout the financial year. There are no set dates for invitations to be sent.

I’ve submitted my EOI through SkillSelect, when can I expect to hear from NSW?
You will only receive correspondence from us if you are invited to apply for NSW nomination. We do not send acknowledgement emails after you have submitted your EOI, provide updates on your EOI, or provide information on your ranking or estimate whether you will be invited. We determine how many invitations are issued on an ongoing basis, with only the top-ranking candidates in each occupation category will be the first to be invited to

I’m unable to find work in NSW, can you please grant me permission to move to a different state?
Receiving a NSW nomination to apply for the skilled subclass 190 visa comes with an obligation that you and your dependants live and work in NSW for the first two years of your visa. This period commences when you permanently enter the country, or in the case you are already onshore, from the date your visa is granted by the Department of Home Affairs.

I’ve submitting my application for NSW nomination, how long before it will be assessed by your office?
Once we receive a complete application for nomination, we will aim to finalise within six weeks.

How can I phone your office?
If you need to speak with us please call NSW Business and Skilled Migration on +61 2 9934 0702 between 10am and 12.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Hello Bellong, please I know you're a very busy man

Hi, you may want to check this
https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/Lega/Lega/Form/Immi-FAQs/how-can-i-extend-my-stay.

If code 8503 is on any granted visa, it means that you are not allowed a further stay in Australia after the visa expiry date. You will need to exit and apply for a new visa before you can come in.

Hi Buddie14,

Sorry to hear about your assessment.

You can check the job description for financial advisor, and ensure that your letter of reference relates with what is stated in the role.

You can also try the sales manager, but pls ensure you read through the job descriptions well amd criteria.
Bear in mind that you will have a lot of packaging and preparation to do.

Hi Veryconcluded,

Do I scan the completed form with the passport photo attached or do i scan the completed form and passport photo separately to the person?

You will pouch the physical forms with your passport attached, and also a copy of your bio-data page to your person in Nigeria, i dont think your scanned copies will be accepted

Hi Ada,

I tried using them but their price is ridiculously expensive, so i just dismissed them sharply. I can forward the forms to you, then you fill it and pouch the hard copy with a copy of your passport to a friend or relative in Nigeria to do it for you and scan back or pouch, it is far cheaper

1) Can someone who holds a first degree in Law(Hon) and about 7 years experience in banking =

Yes you can apply but note that your qualification is not qualified for the role. Nevertheless, your 7 years banking experience should be in a related field like an account officer then 3 years out of that will be substitute for your law degree

Apart from the aforementioned, where one has undergone and successfully completed on the job training on Basic Banking, Basic Accounting, Financial Statement Analysis & Basic Credit Modules, Knowledge of Banking Regulations, AML/CFT Compliance training together and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Finance & Control of Nigeria; would all these be said to be relevant?

[color=#770077] if you have certificates to prove your training, all goo

2) Where one worked in two different banks and is no longer with them, can Statutory Declaration be used in place of Reference from them?
If yes, can the Statutory declaration be self declaration or can a former colleague declare on one's behalf?

Yes, self declaration

3) Due to the fact that one is no longer in the employ of these institutions, can statements of accounts (showing payment of salary) together with statement from PFA (showing contributions made and withdrawal from same due to loss of job) be used in place of payslips?

Yes but remember payslips shows your tax payments so you may consider some proof of your tax payments

Good day to all eFamily members, pls am about to fill form 157A. If I declare my family member (wife & daughter) in my application and they are not going with me now but they will process their visa to join me later.

Pls here is my concern, do I need to include their certified copy of international passport, birth certificate and passport photograph with my application.

Please have mercy on me and clarify my doubt by responding to my concern. I don't want to make unnecessary mistake. Thank you

Hi, you will include the birth certificate of your daughter and your wedding certificate. All certificates are to be certified because you are submitting photocopies. I am kind of curious why you dont want to include them in your application even if they are not going to travel with you. Your mind will always be at peace because they can join you anytime

Not sure if naira master cards works here anymore. I stand corrected oooh, e Don tay wey I withdraw from Naija account. Please if anyone has recently used his card let the house know to help the new arrivals.

Nigerian MasterCards and Visacards do work perfectly well but the exchange rate, atm usage charges and amount that can be withdrawn differs according to the bank. The more cards you have the better for you, as at today when I used my stanbic card, the rate was N220 and charge was N240.
Still the best rate though when compared to others but has the lowest amount to be withdrawn from Atm, max withdrawal is $200 daily and $1000 monthly. Gtb is $400 daily and $1000 monthly

I got an enrollment letter from my school ,extended my single oshc to family oshc and made copies of their oshc cards, all sighted by justice of peace in Sydney and dispatched these documents with nomination form 919 to my family in Nigeria. I will advise you to use DHL cos I used standard postage and it took roughly a month to arrive in Nigeria.
My family submitted birth and marriage certificates,my sop (not sure if it is needed) just to avoid issues, wedding/family pictures, copies of yellow card. That is all

We're In A Very Difficult Situation

Am Just Thinking, Can't One Possibly Pay Over In Aussie On Your Behalf Just To Have You Meet Your Timeline, While You Deposit The Equivalent Into Either Their Dorm Or Current Account Here In Nigeria?

Someone Should Have Been In This Exchange Business By Now To Help Applicant In Dire Situations As This.

Just My Thoughts....

hi, you are talking of millions here, how easy is it to have such money in OZ? A word for folks, if you decide to use above method, be extremely careful because it is better your money is safe with you with a deferred admission than being defrauded. I am yet to complete my payment because of this same issue, thankfully my naija cards are working but in little bits (max is $200 for stanbic and access while gt is $400 atm daily withdrawals) so you need at least 1 week withdrawal to sum up $4,000.rate is $1 -N188 to N190 between these banks.
My advice is for you to ask the school for their account details explain the situation of things to them, look for a genuine big bdc operator (try the airport bdc operator offices), prices may be a bit high but you will definitely get the cash. The bdc operator can also help you transfer the funds or you will need a dorm account to initiate the transaction.

Hello peeps, I just got to read that CBN is planning to stop naira cards from working abroad from Jan 1st 2016. This decision will definitely affect some of us still spending naira, is there anyone with suggestion on how to spend your naira in Australia after Jan 1st? Please share,
In the interim, I did a withdrawal on Sunday and the rate is N211 for access bank while stanbic was N191.

Please house is it possible that an agent can instruct embassy to delay a visa application because my friend agent is treating her that if she applied for visa behind his back that he's going to make sure she got denied unless she applied through him and pay for his guarantee visa charges which is very high that he will send her particulars to the Pretoria that if she applied they will notify him by then he will ask them to deny it that she must pay him to apply for her so I ask is it possible and how she got to know these agent is through the school she applied because the school ask her to apply through an agent. So is it possible

Very funny (lol) i am sorry but i could not stop laughing. Can you please tell us the name of the agent so that other nairalanders will avoid him, but did your friend actually believe all that lies? and does the agent think it is Nigeria embassy that the application is going to. All sorts
