Career / Dear Sir, I Quit; Sincerely, Your New Boss by vhw2014: 11:55am On Oct 17, 2015
Founding a startup is great but knowing how to plan ahead is much more important. Thus, the important question one should always ask oneself is this – “what’s the best time to leave my day job?” We have provided below 5 signs that tells you when it’s time to make that leap.

You gotta look before leaping

Day jobs mean a certain level of financial security especially if you have got a good working relationship with your employer. It’s quite easy to say to yourself “I will eventually make more money if I quit my job now and set out on my own” but what are the odds? You should consider testing the waters with a single foot before you dive right in which basically means getting your homework done; until you do so, you might just want to hang on to your present cubicle.

Lack of fulfillment

What you do for a living, in addition to being able to generate income for you, should provide you with at least a basic form of satisfaction and fulfillment. There is more opportunity for success when you feel passionate about what you do. It makes those annoying general meetings worth your time and effort.

In as much as you are out to make money, you should also take into consideration, your mental health. Scientific studies have shown a direct correlation between mental health and job satisfaction. See here and here. Thus, when your job is beginning to look like work, it’s time to revisit that startup idea you put down on that napkin.

When the pieces are in place

You don’t jump into uncharted waters simply because you see your mates swimming and you think, “if they can do it, why can’t I?” Don’t forget, there are rules for that sort of thing; you have to know how to swim against the current, know to hang unto floating objects when drifting away etc. In other words, before quitting your paid job, you must ensure the pieces you need to get your startup off the ground are in place. You should have a sound business plan, market penetration plan, staff engagement plan etc

You can handle being your own boss

The previous point has clearly illustrated that being your own boss comes with its own set of challenges and you have to exhibit a certain level of discipline to make it out there. Ask yourself if you would have the discipline to stick to your daily work schedule as you would in your day job. The immediate freedom may feel relatively exhilarating but to avoid procrastination and laxity, you need to develop parameters to keep your freedom in check. Once you are certain you can achieve that, you are good to go.

Business / The Story Of Inighi by vhw2014: 12:07pm On Oct 09, 2015
Inighi is one of Cross River state’s most successful high street fashion brands. The fashion label has since its official launch in July of 2014, carved out a niche for itself in the market, catering to women of all age and sizes who aim to look trendy yet smart and comfortable. The label is known for its use of bold colours and geometric cuts while keeping in view functionality and affordability in the production of its ready-to-wear line, making the fashion line one of the most sought after on Konga and Jumia.

Inighi design startup nigeria made in niger deltaIn our recent trip to Cross River state, we could not help but stop by for a chat with the label’s CEO Eme Bassey. Eme received her training in Fashion Business from the London Fashion School-Fashion Antidote and went on to get additional certification in Fashion Manufacturing from University of the Arts, London. During our brief discussion, Eme tells us how she’s managed to take the business from just one staff to close to 15 in so short a time.
Interview excerpts below:

Startupnigeria: First of all, i am very sure my readers would be very eager to know the meaning of the word “Inighi”, are you willing to divulge?

inighi bell sleeve top

Eme: Of course (lol) Inighi is an Efik word that simply means “sweetness” “appealing” “attractive”.

Startupnigeria: One thing I have noticed, your clothes are “everywhere”, how did that happen so fast?

Eme: Yea, in the course of our market research, we noticed that everyone is on social media, almost everyone has a smart phone, so we leverage heavily on technology, which is basically social media because with social media, it’s all about personalized selling, you get referrals. It reduces the lead time you need to make a phone call and confirm an order and you can quickly analyse your sales. In conclusion, we leveraged heavily on online-marketing to gain traction.

StartupNigeria: The fashion industry is a capital intensive one, how have you managed to stay afloat so far?

Eme: When we first started out, it was a bit scary because we were basically bootstrapping. Not too scary though because i did not go all in at first. I first started out just selling trendy clothes to friends and course mates while schooling in Yola and then one day I decided to create the label. After struggling for a while i was able to get a little assistance from the Micro-finance and Enterprise loan for small busineak came from the YOUWIN federal government grant. It enabled us get the industrial machines we needed and we were able to acquire an outlet in Lagos; we also organized our official launch event and took on quite a number of additional staff.

StartupNigeria: So just a quick one before you go, a lot of aspiring founders and innovators would love to hear a few words of wisdom from you. Got any to share?

Eme: Reading and research your top-most priority. The internet should be your best friend; all the information you need is online. Have a clear picture of where you are going. Do not allow anyone carry you away by preferring a thousand and one ways of getting things done. You will go through a lot of challenges but be persistent, keep believing. Also be flexible, be ready to pivot as there are always unforeseen events.

Agriculture / Meet The Young Man Destined To Change Ikom, Cross River State One Egg At A Time by vhw2014: 3:32pm On Sep 17, 2015
In our previous post, startupnigeria shared with you the story of Michael Samuel Ayang the young poultry farmer based in Apiapum, Obubra Local Government Area of Cross Rivers State, who is on a mission of creating sustainable development via agriculture in his local community. In this post, we will be visiting another young individual who plans to toe the same line with big dreams of taking agriculture to the next level in Cross Rivers State.

So here we are on our way to Yala in Ikom Local Government Area which is approximately 44km away from Obubra and 23km away from Cameroun. The people of Ikom are predominantly cocoa farmers, ranking as one of the highest producers of top quality cocoa in the country. A few of them are also running banana and plantain plantations. Interestingly enough, when startupnigeria asked to be taken to the closest cocoa processing plants in the area, we were told there were none, leaving us to focus on our primary purpose of visiting the area.

Enter Akan Patrick Oyong,owner of Rose Diamond Farm Ikom. In this interview, Patrick takes us through his background, his agro-based venture and his dreams for a purely agro-sustainable Nigeria. Below are the interview excerpts;

Startupnigeria: Hello Patrick, thanks for having us here

Patrick: It is a pleasure to have you here with me, coming all the way from Calabar to visit my farm despite the bad roads and the rain.

Startupnigeria: It was worth it. Do you mind giving us a tour of your farm?

Patrick: Why not (Immediately, I whip out my camera and snap away)

In the next 30 minutes Patrick proceeds to give us a grand tour of his farm where he currently houses 1000 layers and about 50 broilers. He proudly shows us the expanse of land he got just for the purpose. He seemed to be particularly happy about the stream running through his property somewhere towards the back and seeing how interior the area was, it was perfectly understandable.

While taking us round his farm, Patrick gave us a brief insight into his background, and academic qualifications. He had this to say
“I was born into an agrarian family, so agriculture is not new to me, i grew up with it. However, coming from the type of family I was born into, I already knew the hidden benefits of agriculture, I knew there was more I could do to modernise things so I decided to study agronomy while I was in the University.”

We also asked him what motivated him to set out on his own instead of working with an already established farm; he says:

“The introduction of Songhai to Cross River state by the previous governor Liyel Omoke was a turning point in my life as I was one of the beneficiaries of the Songhai Cross River Initiative (SCRI). A partnership between the Cross River State Government and Songhai farms in Porto Novo, Benin Republic. I was one of the few young people sent for training there and it was indeed an eye opener for me. My mind was open to a whole world of new possibilities. That was I came back home and established something for myself”.

Startupnigeria: Do you mind if I ask how where you able to get the financial resources you required for your project?

Patrick: Not a problem at all. My family has been very supportive, I had put in a little cash of my own but the main breakthrough came when I applied for the Federal Government sponsored YOUWIN project. That was what helped me purchase the land you see now and i commenced operations immediately. However, there are still some major challenges ahead of me because the production level now cannot support the running of the farm, so I find myself dipping my hands into my pocket for sustenance. I have four people who work for me full time plus a part time vertinary doctor who comes all the way from Calabar to check on my birds. I have to pay all these people and so far it has not been easy.

To support my vision for this farm, i have to engage one or two other people with the requisite knowledge of agricultural processes so that they can be able to take over if I have to be somewhere else, that way i can also expand faster because we would now be talking shared knowledge.

Startupnigeria: I heard you talk about your ‘vision’ for the farm. Would you mind sharing that with our readers?

Patrick: In the nearest future I hope to be one of the key players in the agricultural sector, employing at least 300 people. They would be involved in various capacities like ranching, the grass cutter unity which i plan to start soon, fisheries, expansion of the poultry. We are looking at a fully integrated process which involves nation-wide deliveries, processing and packaging.

Startupnigeria: Any last words for the youths out there?

Patrick: Agriculture is more than just going to the farm and getting dirty. This a whole sector of the economy that is more than capable of making us self sufficient. Don’t look down on it because it can single handedly change a person’s destiny. Look beyond the white collar jobs and see what you can do to help yourself while creating a source of livelihood for others who are not necessarily ready to go into entrepreneurship.
