Health / Digital Pill That Tracks Use When Swallowed Gets FDA Approval by vibzy: 5:25pm On Nov 15, 2017 |
U.S. regulators approved the first medicine with an embedded sensor to help keep track of whether patients with mental illness are adhering to their prescriptions. The decision marks a milestone in the convergence of technology and health care that also raises privacy concerns. The so-called digital pill is a version of Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co.’s Abilify, which treats depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The sensor, developed by Proteus Digital Health, is activated by stomach fluids, sending a signal to a patch worn on the patient’s torso and transmitting the information to a smartphone app. “This is the first time we’ll have an objective measurement of adherence,” said Kabir Nath, chief executive officer for North America at Otsuka Pharmaceutical. By allowing physicians to track a patient’s use, Nath said he hopes to avert “dramatic and immediate health-care crises, such as for schizophrenia patients where missing medicines can result in a psychotic break which will land them in an ER.” The Food and Drug Administration’s approval late Monday comes as the technology sector increasingly turns to health care to test advances like machine learning, artificial intelligence and micro-electronics for everything from drug development to insurance. Track Ingestion “Being able to track ingestion of medications prescribed for mental illness may be useful for some patients,” Mitchell Mathis, director of the Division of Psychiatry Products in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement. Through an app, patients can also opt to report activity, rest and mood information to share with their caregiver, the companies said. While many in the health industry are embracing new technology, others worry about protecting patient privacy as more data is generated and shared. Patients who are prescribed the product, called Abilify MyCite, have to agree that their physicians can see the data. They can also choose whether or not to share information with caregivers, such as family members. Otsuka Pharmaceutical and certain insurers also plan to gather anonymized, aggregated data from patients who consent. “We know some people don’t have relief of symptoms, and we don’t know if that’s just because they’re not taking their medication,” Nath said. Limited Start Otsuka Pharmaceutical, which is a unit of Tokyo-based Otsuka Holdings Co., plans to start the program with just a handful of health systems and gather evidence on the drug’s effects on adherence, he said. Not all patients will appreciate such monitoring, says Lucia Savage, chief privacy and regulatory officer at Omada Health Inc., a startup focused on digital counseling programs for chronic conditions like diabetes. “It creates a looking-over-your-shoulder effect,” Savage said. Information about mental illness is particularly sensitive, said Savage, who previously was a privacy officer at the Department of Human and Health Services. She suggested patients and their physicians ask questions like, “How is the data flowing? Where does the signal go? If it goes to somebody’s server, whose server is that? What are the business arrangements?” Bob McQuade, Otsuka Pharmaceutical’s chief strategic officer, said patients will have a choice. The company will continue to sell regular Abilify, he said, and generic versions of the drug are available as well. Closely held Proteus is based in Redwood City, California.

Career / Why Applying Online Won’t Land You Your Dream Job & What To Do instead by vibzy: 4:22pm On Sep 26, 2017 |
Four percent. 4% That’s the number of online applications that actually reach a human being… I’m getting ahead of myself though. Let’s take a step back. Following The Conventional Path When you want a job at a company, what do you do? I’m guessing that you make your way over to their career website and see what openings are available. If there’s one you like, you polish up your resume and spend a few hours drafting up a cover letter. Finally, you head back to their career site, take a deep breath, cross your fingers and hit submit. You might think the company is looking at each of these resumes and carefully hand-picking applicants to come in for an interview. Think again. On average, an open role at a well known company gets ~250 resumes. 75% of these resumes came from some sort of online portal (the company’s online application, a career aggregator site like Indeed.com, etc.). Once submitted, these applications are screened by Applicant Tracking Software that scans them for keywords. At the end of the process, 10 resumes (4%) make it into the hands of a recruiter. Sounds pretty bad right? What if I told you that wasn’t even the worst part. In a recent LinkedIn survey on talent trends, 1 in 3 employees said that they were actively looking for new work. In September of 2016, the population of employed people in the US was 124 million. That means that, at any given time, 41 MILLION people are actively searching for a job in the US. That’s a lot of people! A minute ago I mentioned that 75% of job applications come from online portals. Here’s where things get interesting. According to Payscale, 80% of job openings aren’t posted online. That means that 75% of people applying for jobs are all competing for 20% of the available positions! Bet you didn’t see that one coming. If you’re only applying for jobs online, you’re getting lost in a sea of applicants with no hope of differentiating yourself. That’s like showing up at the the most popular club in New York at 11pm with your 3 best guy friends and expecting to stroll right in. It ain’t gunna happen! So what do you do instead? Taking A New Approach The key to landing your dream job in today’s market is leveraging a laser-focused networking approach. Forget events and happy hours, your goal is to solely focus on one or two individuals who have influence over the hiring decision for you dream role. I personally used this approach to land interviews at Google, Twitter & Uber along with a 200% raise. I cover it extensively in my article How To Get A Job Anywhere With No Connections. For now, we’ll focus on 3 main steps: Step 1: Identify Influencers If we want a job on Google’s Account Management team that focuses on the Financial Services vertical, who better to know than someone currently working on (better yet, managing) that team. Finding these people is simple. All you need to do is head over to LinkedIn and search using this formula: Company Name + Job Title Using our example above we would search for: Google Account Manager Financial Services This will pull up a list of potential contacts: If you’re set on a specific location, feel free to add it at the end of the search: Google Account Manager Financial Services New York Once you’ve identified a few people that seem like a good fit, use Voila Norbert to find their email address and reach out to set up a meeting. Step 2: Uncover Challenges Companies hire for one reason — they are willing to pay someone to perform a function that will substantially increase the amount of revenue they bring in. When you meet with your contact, be it over the phone or in person, your goal is to uncover their largest revenue blocker. Get as much information as you possibly can. All you need to do is ask: What is the biggest challenge your team is currently facing? Followed up by a few probing questions: How did this problem arise in the first place? What limitations are holding you back from solving it? What solutions have you tried to implement? Step 3: Solve Their Problem Once you’ve gathered your intel, it’s time to research. Find out as much about their problem as you can. For some companies, the problem may be public (e.g. Twitter’s inability to monetize). If that’s the case, your best resources are going to be places where smart people gather online to discuss these types of problems. My two recommendations are Quora and Seeking Alpha. Quorans love discussing businesses and finding solutions. Writers on Seeking Alpha are typically financially invested in the company so they spend their waking hours researching it. Save yourself some time by leveraging their work. If the problem exists on a smaller scale, try to find connections that work in a similar setting. Run the problem by them and see what their company is doing to address it. The end goal here is to consolidate your findings into 2–3 plausible solutions . Once you have them prepared, send them back to your contact. If your solutions are on point, your contact will share them out with the greater team. The feedback will typically lead to them reaching out to you saying, “Those solutions you provided were fantastic. You know, we have an open role on our team. Is that something you might be interested in?” Your Day Job Doesn’t Have to Kill Your Creativity Thanks for reading 3 Likes |
Business / 1,000 Loans DAILY !...Paylater by vibzy: 2:13pm On Sep 12, 2017 |
At the start of the year when we were disbursing about 200 loans a day, we set ourselves what we felt was an aggressive target of 1,000 paylaterng loans issued on a daily basis. We felt it was ambitious not because of a lack of demand (who hasn’t got a friend that needs a loan?) but rather the challenge to risk-assess 1,000 people that we had never met, living in all states of Nigeria and then disburse within a short time frame to their customers accounts. Today we are happy to say that over 60% of these 1,000 loans are disbursed within 1 minute with the rest all under 5minutes and they span a range of N7,500 to N200k for first time borrowers. The inevitable question is “yes, great but are you profitable? Any monkey can give out loans — but are you collecting?. Our mothers told us not to boast so let’s say that our default is between 10% and 20% but trust us that its a manageable number. If you don’t believe us then look out for us early next year — if you are right, then we won’t be around!!! Whilst we are pleased with the team effort that has got us so far, we are not content. Our mantra is “credit for all” and there are too many within Nigeria who don’t have access to credit. We only give @paylaterng loans via smartphones so the 60% of Nigerians that have feature phones unfortunately are excluded. Moreover, for most local banks, “financial inclusion” is just another way of saying “let me provide another channel to take your savings”. Less than 10% of customers have accessed loans from any formal financial institution but you don’t see banks showing the same energy to grow their retail assets as they do their retail deposits. We are also unhappy with the cost of borrowing but with a cost of funds at around 30% and inflation running at around 15%, we have no choice. Now if we were a commercial bank with cost of funds at 2–3% a year, then you would see us do magic. Alas we are not. But we are working hard to try and bring the cost of funds down and hoping Development Finance Institutions such as @AfDB_Group , @KFW and @IFC_org will help us access long term notes denominated in local -currency. Trust us when we say that if we get this Christmas gift, we will match the rates the commercial banks give to their customers for *secured* loans. So what’s next after breaking 1,000? Really the sky is the limit, but our focus right now is on breaking the stigma that banks have to lending to their customers. Every day thousands of people that we have never met apply to us for loans to fund their businesses, emergencies, rent, education. Many of them are first time applicants, but to all we give a quick decision and prompt execution to the qualified ones. All these customers already have banks — most of these customers have been rejected by their banks because their loan amounts were too small, or they had no collateral but ultimately because the banks haven’t taken the effort to reciprocate the trust millions of their customers have given. “Our next goal is to keep amassing large numbers of customers so that we can break the stigma that the so-called lowly worker is not trustworthy” So our next goal is to keep amassing large numbers of customers so that we can break the stigma that the so-called lowly worker is not trustworthy, that if you give that first-time entrepreneur a loan she will not pay back. As always, we like to stress that this is not something we can do on our own. We have been lucky to work with all parts of the financial eco-system from switches, banks, telcos and payment processors. All parts need to function well for us to provide best execution to our customers so we thank all our partners and look forward to working together in breaking barriers to inclusive finance. Business / Introducing PAYLATER V3— There’s More For Everyone. by vibzy: 9:53am On Aug 28, 2017 |
It’s live! We’ve just released the latest version of our app to the Google Play Store. We’re calling it Paylater v3. It’s been a few months in the making, and we’re excited to finally have it out in the wild. What makes v3 so special? There are 3 major changes for v3, which really set this app apart. By popular demand: larger loans are available to self-employed individuals, students.. everyone! No more Paylater Plus — all Paylater loans, regardless of the amount, now require no documents or wait times, and are available 24/7. We’ve rethought and redesigned the app, making it quicker, more responsive and more fun! 1. Larger loan amounts Over the last few months, our standard starting loan amount was NGN10,000. By earning Points in the app through consistent on-time repayments and other positive habits, borrowers gradually climbed up the Paylater Ladder to higher amounts, longer tenures and lower rates. However, as we understood our customers all over the country better, we learnt that NGN10,000 in Benin went a lot further than NGN10,000 in Lagos, for example. So, it didn’t make sense to offer the same thing to different customers with different needs. Additionally, while it quickly became evident that points were an effective means to incentivize positive borrower behaviour — for example, repaying loans on time, and referring trusted friends to the service — having each applicant follow the same credit journey ignored the individual differences stated above. Better loans that meet your unique needs In v3, Paylater loans are now customized to each individual. When you register, our system intelligently determines a loan offer most suitable for you, and you can access that immediately, whether it’s your 1st or 10th loan on our platform. The points system will now be transitioned to a more traditional rewards program, where we’ll offer various benefits to customers for their patterns in the app. [Stay tuned for v3.1] ;-) Which brings us to the next big change…. 2. Paylater Plus is dead. Long live Paylater! Paylater Plus was a loan package we introduced with Paylater v2 in November 2016 to cater to some of our customers in formal salaried employment who wanted higher loan amounts, and didn’t mind waiting a little longer to receive funds. While helpful, this created a few problems for our customers that we we were keen to solve. Problem 1: Paylater Plus required supporting documents and a manual underwriting/review process (done only during normal business hours), which was slightly at odds with what we set out to do with Paylater— provide an instant, 24/7 service that funds your account within minutes, regardless of the loan amount being sought, or the time of day. Problem 2: It was only available to salary earners in formal employment. While such individuals tend to have more stable inflows via monthly income, it cut out a significant chunk of our customer base who were working very hard for themselves, and despite having less predictable cash flows, are often equally (or more) equipped to service credit than the ‘9–5’ers. It was obvious we needed to fix this. A sizeable chunk of our customers work for themselves — and are equally able to service larger loans Solution: The eggheads on our data science team came up with a few clever ways (us mere mortals just call it juju) to reliably determine each customer’s affordability, irrespective of employment status, which means that Paylater Plus — in its initial iteration — became redundant. In the new app, we’ve merged it with the existing Paylater package, and so now, whether you’re a student, employee or business owner, you’ll get a loan offer best suited to your personal needs. …And the best part? We no longer require any documents for any of our loans. Verification and every part of the application process will now be completed without paperwork, and within minutes — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. R.I.P, paperwork! We’ve rolled Paylater Plus into Paylater, as one cohesive product. No more documents required. No more wait times. Loan decisions within minutes. Available to everyone, anywhere, at any time. 3. Redesigned app For lovers of new and shiny things, you aren’t left out! With the first few versions of the app, most of our time was spent figuring out how to get customers from registration to funds in bank account as quickly as possible, and perhaps neglected some of the finer details of an app with a world-class user experience. After an extensive research and user testing process, we’ve redesigned the app — it’s now more intuitive and delightful to use. It’s smoother — loading screens now transition beautifully from one activity to another. The loan application is shorter — we’ve trimmed the application to make it quicker and easier to complete applications. There are friendly guides that pop up throughout the app to help and encourage you along the way. All our support channels have now been made available in the app — so we’re always reachable at the click of a button. Somewhere in there, we’ve even included selfies, so we can stare in amazement at how beautiful you all are! (we don’t have fancy Snapchat/Instagram filters though — sorry. Maybe next time.) Sometimes you just need a smiling avatar to help you along the way With the new Paylater update, we’ve packed amazing functionality, speed, and security into just under 10MB. We really believe it’ll move financial services in Africa a few steps forward. It’s our best app yet, and we can’t wait for you to try it out and tell us what you think. Get the new Paylater app. Available for download now on the Google Play Store. Source: https://medium.com/@paylater/introducing-paylater-v3-theres-more-for-everyone-15512bb3709e

The Tecno WX4 Pro is a slight improvement over the main WX4. With the major improvements happening in the RAM and connectivity departments, the WX4 Pro is the Camon CX Air, just less expensive and with toned down cameras. Although yet to be officially launched down here in Nigeria, the device would be targetted at the youths who want an inexpensive device with an above average camera and performance. Let’s look at the specifications of the device. Quick Details Tecno WX4 Pro Network: 2G / 3G / 4G Display: 5.0 inches, IPS LCD Touchscreen display — (720 x 1280 px) Software: Android v7.0 (Nougat) Processor: 1.3GHz Quad-core Memory: 2GB RAM / 16GB ROM Cameras: Front — 8.0 MP (with flash) / Rear — 8.0MP (autofocus, LED flash) Battery: 2800 mAh Network and Software As per usual, the Tecno WX4 Pro is a dual SIM device which, unlike the WX4, supports 4G LTE. The familiar Android Nougat found on its ‘junior brother’ is also what the WX4 Pro ships with. Android Nougat through Tecno’s HiOS that is. The display is an IPS LCD touchscreen with a size of about 5.0 inches diagonally and a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, bringing its pixel density to around 294. Performance and Hardware For heavy-lifting, a Quad-core MediaTek CPU clocked at about 1.3GHz is embedded within the device, and it is assisted by about 2 gigabytes of RAM. The WX4 Pro’s onboard storage is the familiar 16GB which can be extended by a microSD card with capacities up to 32GB. And no, you should not worry about ‘sacrificing’ a SIM slot for the external storage as it has its own dedicated slot. Cameras The WX4 Pro features 8-megapixel lenses both at the back and in front of the device. The rear camera is supported by a dual-LED flash for low light conditions and has autofocus capabilities. The front facing camera also has its own dedicated flash light as well. Battery The device also features a battery with a capacity of about 2800 mAh but with no ‘flash charging’ capabilities. Car Talk / We Are Banning All Self-driving Cars - UBER by vibzy: 11:20pm On Jul 02, 2017 |
Uber's fleet of self-driving cars have been suspended following a recent accident in Arizona. Uber has grounded its fleet of self-driving cars pending an investigation into the crash of an Uber autonomous vehicle in Arizona, a spokesperson for the carry hailing service said Sunday. No one was seriously injured in the accident which occurred Friday in Tempe, Arizona while the vehicle -- a Volvo SUV -- was in self-driving mode, the company said. "We are continuing to look into this incident and can confirm we had no backseat passengers in the vehicle, " the Uber spokesperson said. The accident occurred when the other vehicle "failed to yield" while making a left turn, Tempe police spokeswoman Josie Montenegros said. "The vehicles collided causing the autonomous vehicle to roll onto it's side. There were no serious injuries," she said. Self-driving Uber vehicles always have a driver who can take over the controls at any time. Montenegro said it was uncertain whether the Uber driver was controlling the vehicle at the time of the collision. The company grounded its self-driving vehicles in Arizona after the accident, and then followed up on Saturday pulling them off the road in Pittsburg and San Francisco, the two other locations where it operates self-driving vehicles, the company said. The car-hailing service has been dented by a series of bad news stories, including disclosures about a culture of sexism, cut-throat workplace tactics and covert use of law enforcement-evading software. A number of executives have left the company in recent weeks, including president Jeff Jones, as troubles have mounted. Advocates of self-driving cars say that they can cut down on deadly traffic accidents by eliminating human error. But there have been accidents, including a fatality in Florida in May when a truck struck a speeding Tesla that was on autopilot. An investigation found no safety-related defects with the autopilot system, but concluded that the driver may have had time to avert the crash if he had been paying closer attention.

TV/Movies / Game Of Thrones Language Dothraki To Be Taught At University - UC Berkeley by vibzy: 7:30am On May 02, 2017 |
The language of Dothraki, which was specially created for Game of Thrones , will be taught in a new course at a US university. UC Berkeley announced the class on its website last week, confirming that 'The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention' will be taught by the language's creator, David J. Peterson. The course will run this coming summer for six weeks. Peterson is an alum of UC Berkeley earning his Masters in Linguistics at UC San Diego in 2005. In 1009, he found himself creating the language of Dothraki for the HBO fantasy series based on extracts from George R.R. Martin's book series. It now features well over 3,000 words. In Thrones , the Dothraki are a group of warriors, the leader of which - Khal Drogo - marries Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in the show's first season. Speaking to the university, he said: “From there, I’ve worked on about a dozen other shows and movies. Language has become my entire life and my livelihood.” Peterson - who has since worked on shows including The 100 and Penny Dreadful - also created the show's High Valyrian language. Game of Thrones trailer: The most excitable Twitter reactions The course will focus on the art of creating a language as opposed to simply studying its vocabulary with Dothraki being the framing device chosen to help students discover what it's like to experience a new langauge. The Dothraki language has previously been the subject of a conversational Living Language course in 2014 Game of Thrones returns to HBO and Sky Atlantic this June

Sports / Williams Won Australian Open While 8 Weeks Pregnant. by vibzy: 2:49pm On Apr 20, 2017 |
It's another love game for Serena Williams: She is pregnant — and, based on the timeline she offered, she already was when she won the Australian Open. A spokeswoman for Williams, Kelly Bush Novak, wrote in an email to The Associated Press on Wednesday: "I'm happy to confirm Serena is expecting a baby this Fall." Earlier in the day, Williams posted a photo of herself on Snapchat with the caption "20 weeks," sparking all sorts of speculation on social media about whether she was, indeed, with child. The 35-year-old Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open in January — a little less than 12 weeks ago. She has not competed since, citing a knee injury when withdrawing from tournaments at Indian Wells, California, and Key Biscayne, Florida. She announced in late December that she was engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Williams would appear to be out for the rest of this tennis season, a blow to a sport in which she is an unqualified star — and, of course, something that makes major titles easier to come by for other competitors. The next major tournament is the French Open, which starts on May 28. Wimbledon begins in early July, and the U.S. Open in late August. There is recent precedent for tennis players to return to action after becoming a mother. Kim Clijsters retired briefly to start a family, then came back to action and won Grand Slam titles. Another former No. 1 and major champion, Victoria Azarenka, has announced she'll be getting back on tour soon after having a baby. Williams' 23 Grand Slam singles titles are a record for the Open era, which began in 1968 — she broke a tie with Steffi Graf in Australia. Only one woman has won more: Margaret Smith Court, who claimed part of her 24 during the amateur era. Business / You May Have A Poor Person’s Mindset And Not Know It by vibzy: 1:15pm On Apr 20, 2017 |
The problem you don’t see Have you ever noticed that the poorest, most miserable people you know tend to be buyers of lottery tickets? C’mon lucky numbers 3, 10, 16, 22, 4, 50. I’m sure there’s a smart-sounding statistic somewhere lodged in a research report by some well-meaning PhD student who had to get funding from the So-And-So Foundation to prove his or her point, but I digress. The correlation is common enough that I’ll assume you know what I mean. Big dreamers tend to be the ones who never seem to be able to get their dreams off the ground. People who view themselves as great lovers tend to be the ones left at the altars. And the most educated people in the world tend to be the dumbest ones in the room. Not always, but way often. “But Ms. Hwangbo, whatever your last name is, what on God’s green earth does this have to do with money?” you may be asking. It would be a fair question. After all, you are reading this article because you’re pissed that someone may be may raining on your grand financial plans, right? I applaud you for seeking the truth, despite this fact. It’s a great quality. In fact, valuing truth no matter what may be one of life’s most useful qualities ever. The big problem is this. We try too hard with our money. We overcompensate for everything with money. We can’t stand that we’re insecure about ourselves. We feel like we can never do as well as the latest who’s-it on Instagram, which leads us to make a series of small financial mistakes that snowball over time. Back in your parents’ day, the people to beat were on TV instead of on social media, or they were your next door neighbors, the Joneses. The underlying problem was the same. The negative comparison bias caused people to take out mortgages they couldn’t afford, play in the stock market when they couldn’t take the losses, and run up their credit cards. Instead of just being okay with feeling inferior, we do all the wrong things with our money in order to convince ourselves that we’re better than okay. And when our insecurity comes calling again which it always does, we do whatever we’re doing that’s taking us the wrong direction and do it more. In the case of people who buy lottery tickets every week, instead of changing how they think about money and using it in more productive ways, they buy more tickets. Every purchase feels like a last ditch effort, which fuels more last ditch financial efforts because by definition last ditch efforts rarely work. This inevitably creates a financially desperate situation, and kaboom. It’s sad. Lots of lives go up in smoke this way. Not by buying lottery tickets per se, but by taking on more student loans, leasing expensive cars, and buying big houses. Maybe this is starting to sound a bit too existential. Isn’t life though? Since we developed this newer part of our brain, we can overthink ourselves right out of relevance, which may be why our average brain size is now shrinking, but again, I digress. You Don’t Want The Right Thing Minimalism’s pretty hot right now. The coolest people you know are subscribing to a financially minimalist lifestyle, which I would applaud if it weren’t another form of trying too hard. Minimalism unfortunately feels like a way of fitting in. Another mantra to live up to. People say they want a financially successful life, but what they really mean is that they want the pleasure and ease of having it without the pain of creating it. It’s the most common goal ever. Their highest value when it comes to money is therefore pleasure. Pleasure, unfortunately for everyone pursuing money for this reason, is a pretty low quality human value. Even if you attain it, your happy feelings come and go and never really accumulate. Apes and cats value pleasure too. Pursuing pleasure rarely makes higher-functioning human beings happy. You can try to use your money to become a happy person this way, but it probably won’t work. You have this newer part of your brain as I mentioned before, that needs something deeper to be satisfied. Fear is the killer of all pleasure, so in order to reach and sustain as much pleasure from money as possible, you have to do dick moves like not paying the doorman a tip or demanding that the world give you everything for free even though it really chaps your hide that you yourself don’t make enough money from other people to make a decent living. Welcome to the millennial economic paradigm where it sucks for everyone just a little bit more. Sorry to those millennials who do the opposite. You guys are my heroes. Remember that old saying? Nothing in life is free? Well, you’re in denial of it. It’s what you’re not willing to pay for that makes wealth elusive to you. Either with time (sustained, difficult effort) or with more money (what those Wall Street bastards call “investment”). Bad long-term plan. You want the life of the rich before becoming the kind of person who becomes rich. By rich, I also mean being compassionate and hard-working, commensurate with the dollars earned. Nope, the real problem isn’t your lack of money. Your problem is that you’re in the market for a hack. You want the outcome of financial success without the process. You want the yacht, the Ferrari, the fabulous Instagram life, but no thank you to the work and the boring minute stuff. You’ve got a poor person’s mindset. Pleasure is never long-lasting and pain is inevitable, so if you think about it that way, you’re sort of screwed. You want the wrong things out of your money. You want it to relieve your pain, instead of providing the means to some other value. The Only Way To Become Rich And Happy You have to figure out what you value more highly than seeking pleasure and ease when it comes to your money. You have to value something better. What might that be? Ever get the feeling when you read stories about mega-successful and financially wealthy people that: a) They never did anything for the money, and b) They would have done whatever they did that made them successful anyway, even if they had never seen the kind of success they did? The difference between them and people with a poor person’s mindset is exactly that. Successful people value the process and the work itself over the outcome, the party, the accolades, and the money. In some way, they value the pain. It’s a better pain to build a business out of their art than say, the pain one gets from passing a kidney stone. The pain from doing their work and failing over and over again is meaningful pain, and always worth going through. They don’t try to avoid discomfort and uncertainty because frankly, avoiding these things is not what makes a great freakin’ wealthy life. There are things in your own life, whether you’ve identified them or not, that are worth the pain, that you’d be willing to go through a ton of suffering for, and still come out the other side with a vaguely goofy smile on your face. If you don’t what these things are, hoping that money will solve your “purpose” problem is pretty darned unlikely to succeed. You’ll never have enough money. Value What You’re Willing To Do For The Money, Not The Money Itself Let me repeat that. If you’re not sure of what you like about money other than pleasure and avoidance of pain, look at what you’re willing to do for the money — as in, the work itself. That is what you really value. If the work you’re willing to do is sleep around until you nail a wealthy spouse, you’re in the world’s oldest profession. If you’re willing to study to get multiple school degrees for the money, you’re a professional student or scholar. You value ideas over execution. If you’re willing to withstand failure and humiliation over and over again while trying to create a product or service, you’re an entrepreneur. If you’re willing to practice your instrument every day for hours on end and face the possibility of rejection during a performance, you’re a musician. You are what you’re willing to do for your money. The money will never change that. Now don’t get me wrong. Not all values are equal. Some values are healthier for reinforcing self-worth and confidence than others and therefore better values. Your job is to pick the ones that reinforce the quality of life you’re trying to build, and pick them well. But please, stop going around thinking that what you want is the money. You’ll only attract people whose highest value is to take it from you. Try this 10 minute exercise Sit down with a pen and piece of paper tonight, and think about what you might be willing to take some major pain for. It doesn’t have to be what you do for a living, or even anything you believe you do well yet. It doesn’t even have to be one thing. It could be multiple things. Ask yourself what you do already or have done in the past that you’re pretty sure no amount of suffering could keep you from doing if you gave yourself permission. Improvement in doing would be enough to keep doing it. Keep the money ‘what-ifs’ out of your mental equation. Baby steps. If you’re hopeful that money will be the solution to all of your problems, you’re already screwed. You’re misguided about what your actual problems are. It all comes down to you. What do you value? What are you willing to practice? p.s. Sorry if this article offends anyone who views “purpose” as lofty, sacred, and above biting commentary. I can only reply, please try to get over it. The value of purpose is already above all else. Source: https://medium.com/personal-growth/the-hidden-sign-that-you-have-a-poor-persons-mindset-13203d676a4c |

Business / Do You Have A Credit History ? - PAYLATER by vibzy: 6:09pm On Apr 06, 2017 |
Loans — as with finance, in general — can do wonderful things for you when properly managed. It can help solve urgent problems, cater to substantial expenses and grow businesses. However, when mismanaged, credit quickly becomes a source of frustration and can cause real damage to your future financial prospects. We’ve highlighted a few ways below to ensure you are properly managing credit: Limit your exposure to debt Realize there is such a thing as ‘too much credit’. Taking on multiple loans at a time increase the risk of missing a payment and then getting stuck in nasty cycles of debt — constantly taking additional loans to pay off previous loans which you’re already struggling to service. Only apply for loans when you need it A loan is a serious obligation and should be treated as such — it probably shouldn’t be used to impress your boys at the club! Assess your needs prior to applying — is the cash need important enough to take out a short term loan? Start with the end in mind Only take loans when you are certain you will have the means to repay on or before the agreed due date(s). Be sure to confirm all interest/fees associated with the loan prior to applying. Only proceed when you are comfortable that you will be able to service the expected repayments. Avoid late repayments at all costs Late repayments or defaults on loans are not only a breach of the contractual agreement between a borrower and a lender; they also come with very real consequences that can be hard to shake off in the long-term. Services such as Paylater reward you for on-time repayments with points, which can be used towards obtaining more attractive loan terms. Get familiar with credit reports If you don’t know what this is — you’re not alone! A lot of our new users start off unaware of the meaning of credit reports or the existence of the credit bureaus that store information on them. Financial institutions are required to provide these bureaus with data on the accounts you hold with them — this applies to current accounts, overdrafts, loans, and soon, even payments such as PHCN bills will be reported! Three of the registered bureaus in Nigeria are XDS Credit Bureau, CR Services Credit Bureau, and CRC Credit Bureau. You can order a self-report from any of the following organizations to review your credit history. https://medium.com/paylater/building-your-credit-history-b5c2c01494e4

Nigerian fintech startup, Paylater has announced a reduction in the time it takes to disburse loans to customers after approval, making it a lot easier for them to get cash quickly in order to meet their urgent needs. When the startup re-launched in 2015, loans were disbursed between 6 – 24 hours after approval largely because the whole process was manual. Few months after, automation was done and loans were disbursed in 30 minutes, a first in the country. The company has now announced a further reduction in the time it takes to disburse loans. From henceforth, approved loans will get to customers in 5 minutes. “You read that correctly. Once anyone is approved for a Paylater loan and has setup a repayment instrument, funds will be credited to the provided bank account within minutes,” the startup stated. It added, “This means that whether you have a medical situation to handle at 3AM on a Sunday morning, or if your DSTV subscription cuts off right in the middle of the Champions League final — you don’t have to wait very long or beg your neighbours to let you watch from the window before you receive the funds you need.” Need I say more? If you’re in need of loans and in 5 minutes or less, simply download the Paylater Android app and apply at your convenience. The application process is quick and you’ll know your fate (or status) within minutes. Romance / Why I Slept With A Married Man, And What I Learned by vibzy: 1:37pm On Mar 24, 2017 |
Ask any heartbroken partner from a relationship split apart due to infidelity: affairs can be bad news. That being said, they're also complicated, yet so often blamed on the evil "home-wrecking" woman, who surely must be out to steal someone's man and cause as much damage as possible. But it doesn't always start out with cruel intentions. "The forbidden and the taboo is one of the biggest turn-ons for people. They're not trying to steal him, or take him, but it's appealing that he is unavailable," says Dr. Michael Aaron, therapist and author of Modern Sexuality. "She's thinking that being with this guy is ideal because he's not going to want more from her because he's already is married." For other women, while they may feel uncomfortable about the man's marriage, their own intimacy issues draw them to someone unavailable. "You may have an individual who wants deeper intimacy, but for whatever attachment reasons, they may be afraid," explains Aaron. From enjoying no-strings-attached sex to simply falling for a friend and coworker. Please share why you sleep with married men, and what it taught you about them.

Jobs/Vacancies / 4 Seemingly Innocent Questions That Make You Look Rude In An Interview by vibzy: 8:04pm On Mar 16, 2017 |
When I was hiring manager, I spoke with upwards of 30 to 40 candidates a week. Nearly every person I met with played it cool and avoided asking about time off, benefits or anything already explained in the job ad. They were smart and steered clear of the glaring red flags we’ve all been taught not to touch on during an interview. But there were less obvious questions that, asked the wrong way, made a handful of those candidates appear unprepared, lacking in confidence or, well, just plain rude. Do your job hunt a favor and avoid these job interview questions like they’re week-old takeout food: 1. “Did You Have A Chance To Read My Resume?” You might be tempted to respond this way after your interviewer asks about a project or role from your career history that you feel like you already explained pretty well in your bullet points. Don’t do it! Think about it: The person you’re meeting with set aside an hour of her day to speak with you. Of course she’s done her research. She’s read your resume, reviewed your LinkedIn profile and likely Googled your name at least once—she just wants to learn more. (And on the off-chance she’s only skimmed your qualifications, choose filling her in on your awesomeness over calling her out.) Remember that if you want to impress the pants off of people during this process, you should be prepared to speak naturally about your career from different angles and with vivid examples. 2. “When Will I Speak With Someone More Senior On Your Team?” Remember what I said about (accidentally) being really rude? Bingo! Asking this question implies that you’re not so invested in the discussion at hand. It sounds like you’d rather meet with a “real” decision maker—and who wants to hire the person who is always going over your head? The fact is, everyone you meet with during this process plays a part in deciding if you move forward. So, instead try saying “Can you tell me about the next steps?” at the end of your conversation. This way, you can get the information you’re looking for without offending your interviewer. He may not have a fancy title, but you can bet you lunch money that the “low-level” person you’re dealing with will be asked to filter out candidates that he wouldn’t personally want to work with. 3. “How Many Other Candidates Are You Meeting With?” Curiosity gets the better of all of us sometimes. While it’s understandable that you’d wonder about your competition, when you ask this question you come off as unsure of yourself. Worse, you’re drawing your interviewer’s mind away from your awesomeness and toward that of other candidates she’s met with. Your odds have less to do with the number of people being considered and more with your fit for the opportunity itself. If the company meets with you and only one other person, and neither of you is a fit, your odds are zero; likewise, if you’re the only shining star of 15 people, you’re a shoo-in. Not to mention, the person you’re speaking with is rarely in position to answer this question honestly anyway, so the numbers you hear could be totally meaningless. Your best bet is to keep this thought to yourself and instead ask questions like these that keep the conversation focused on you, and may provide additional info about the role! 4. “Why Did You Decide To Interview Me?” At an interview, only one person should be selling you (and that’s you!). If you’ve read the job description and researched the company, you should already have an idea of why you’ve been selected. But what’s the harm in asking about what tipped the scales in your favor? I’ll tell you: You risk seeming unaware of the value you bring or what the company’s needs are—it’s a rookie move. Rather than giving into that instinct, go with: “Can you tell me more about your ideal candidate for this position?” It’s a better way to glean information about how you’re being measured. Better yet, it provides you the opportunity to speak to points you may have missed in your other responses during the interview. The job hunt isn’t a one-way street. You should absolutely use the conversation to determine if the company is a great fit for you too. Just remember to plan your interview questions in advance to avoid one of the major faux pas above. Business / PAYLATER (#mypaylaterstory) by vibzy: 6:57pm On Mar 02, 2017 |
You can use a Paylater loan for... anything! We love it when our users tell us their stories about what a Paylater loan has helped them achieve. The reasons we see vary greatly by the time of day/month of the application, the individual’s profession, age group, marital status and even location, but there are a few common themes we’ve discovered — across the country, our loans are mainly used for business growth, family, education and medical expenses. It’s great to be of service to people like Lanre A., who’s taken 8 Paylater loans to run a small side business and then, boosted by a 100% on-time repayment record, moved up to a Paylater Plus loan of NGN 240,000 when he needed to urgently pay rent. Or Elizabeth O. who, after taking a few loans to bridge the gap between pay days and tend to the needs of her 3 children, fell badly ill and needed to settle medical bills. This came at a time where she had funds tied up elsewhere. Fortunately for her, she had the Paylater app. She has now earned 2,100 points in the app which she’ll use to obtain larger amounts at even lower rates as she climbs further up the Paylater Ladder. Vivian A., currently a student in Anambra, doesn’t have any more financial concerns about school fees ahead of her graduation as she knows there’s quick funding available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has been supported since July 2016. With each urgent money problem that we help solve daily, it’s exciting confirmation that the work we do is important and truly meeting a need. Let’s hear what you think! For our existing users — whatever a Paylater loan has helped you accomplish, we would love to hear it. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be launching the #MyPaylaterStory campaign. Some of our early favourites — what’s your story with Paylater? All you have to do is leave us a comment on your Paylater experience with the tag #MyPaylaterStory on any of our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter,or Instagram) — we’ll feature some of our favourite ones, and give away some special prizes along the way. Happy Sharing!
