The Chairman of Subsidy Reinvestment and Employment Programme (SURE-P), Dr. Christopher Kolade, expressed Concern Over the plight of 40 million Nigerians who are in need of jobs. Speaking during the sensitization and mobilisation programme organized by the Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS) in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State yesterday, he said President Goodluck Jonathan was committed to solving the employment problem through the SURE-P. Kolade, who was represented by the Technical Assistant to Community Services, Women and Youth Employment (CSWYE) of SURE-P, Mr. Emeka Ekpunobi, noted that through the GIS, President Jonathan was making efforts to ensure that the employment problem, which had accumulated for years was addressed drastically. “Through the GIS, we have the mandate to create 50, 000 jobs. This sensitization workshop is therefore very important to us because it is part of our commitment to ensure that the GIS achieves the objectives for which it was set up,” he said. He noted that President Jonathan had demonstrated his commitment to tackling the challenge of youth employment by providing the necessary platform and funds. The programme, which was organised by the GIS in collaboration with Kalends Consulting, was aimed at making Nigerian graduates more employable through training and mentoring. The consultant, Mr. Kayode Longe noted that the Graduate Intership Scheme was being organised to expose young graduates to the labour market where they would be more exposed to realities and challenges in the industry that will let them be employable. The Project Director of the GIS , Mr. Peter Parka said: “National Bureau of Statistics in 2011 indicate that 23.9 per cent of Nigerians are unemployed. This means that about 40 million Nigerians need employment. Government is concerned about this high unemployment rate and its doing everything possible to reverse it.” source: http://gbadunaija..com/2013/08/goodluck-jonathan-to-give-50000-jobs.html?m=1 |

Nwabueze, who led other members of The Patriots to submit their memorandum on Transforming the Nation through a National Conference, to President Jonathan, said though he was eligible to contest, the president should not contest the 2015 election. Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Prof. Nwabueze while emphasizing that this was his personal position and not that of The Patriots, also urged the president to convene a national conference before 2015. Nwabueze, who said 2015 was not part of the discussion, told journalists that his position had not changed. He said: “ That is not the purpose of our meeting today, but that is my view and I still maintain that view today. I still believe that the paramount problem of this country is national transformation, that you cannot combine national transformation with contesting election. The two are so different, because once you get involved in election campaigns, you undermine your authority to lead the nation for national transformation and I said, if I were the president of Nigeria, I would restrict myself to serving the nation, in transforming this country, in creating a new Nigeria, in creating a new society, that would be my concern and I would go down in history as a hero. “So, if Mr President does that, he would become an instant hero to this country, but it is for him to choose. If I were him, I would choose to become a hero to lead the country into transformation and abandon the ambition of a second term. That was what I said and I still stand by it. That is what I would do if I were the president of the country, but unfortunately, I’m not.” On Jonathan’s eligibility to contest, he said: “That is not an issue. Mr. President is eligible, nobody is questioning his eligibility, the president is eligible, what makes him ineligible? Nothing; he is eligible, that is a personal decision for him to take.” On what the meeting focused on, Nwabueze said: “We talked about the transformation of this country. What we said is that this country, a situation in which we have found ourselves today, is in dire need of transformation. Its entire economy, the entire polity and the entire society would need to be transformed. We believe that the way to achieve that objective is through a national conference, a national conference of ethnic nationalities in this country. We have done our own research and we are not perfect but our own review showed that we have in this country 389 ethnic nationalities. We need to bring these nationalities around a conference table to discuss how we are going to live together as one country in peace, in stability, in security as one country with the aim of achieving national unity.” Nwabueze said that on the position of the National Assembly that there is no need for any national sovereign conference when there is an elected National Assembly in place.. LG Mobile has really nailed it on this one with the introduction of their new Smartphone they call the G PRO. Compared to any Smartphone currently in Nigeria, the phone definitely plays a PRO in its category. Take a look at the features of this bad boy. Performance: The Optimus G Pro is the first device to sport that wicked Snapdragon 600 processor. It’s clocked at 1.7GHz, it is backed by the Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Continue... Camera The camera department promises to be a nail- biter too. The Smartphone boasts of camera sensors with a 13MP rare camera and 2.1MP front unit. A cool option that LG has added is the Time machine camera. It continuously snaps photos in the background, waiting for you to press the shutter. And when you do, it saves several of the photos captured before you pressed the shutter and several after. This way you can capture the right moment even if you don't have cat-like reflexes. Qremote This by far is my favourite feature of the G Pro. The Qremote stands for Quick Remote, with this feature, you can actually use the phone as a remote control for your home appliances like AC, DVD, Home theatre system, television, projectors (For those at work) etc. What’s even more fascinating, you can use the Qremote feature across all electronic brands. The phone is definitely a most have for lovers of big screens and sophisticated devices. We hear LG intend launching the phone sometime in September and at a very affordable price, we don’t have full information as to the exact date of the launch. LG will be giving the first 50 people to purchase the device free pocket photo, the device that print instantly after just taking a picture. President Goodluck Jonathan has described as false and baseless, insinuations in the media that the appointment of the former Minister of Youth Development, Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir, was terminated because he failed to ensure his preferred candidate emerged as president of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN). The President also denied that he had a preferred candidate in the elections. According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, President Jonathan remained sincerely and unwaveringly committed to doing all within his powers to promote the credibility and integrity of the electoral process at all levels in the country. The Presidency stated that it was Abdulkadir’s “regrettable deviation from his presidential commitment in the management of the NYCN elections that led to the decision to relieve him of his appointment as Minister of Youth Development.” Jonathan said he was very displeased with the mishandling of the NYCN elections in Makurdi and Minna by the Ministry of Youth Development which resulted in the unfortunate fractionalization of the youth council. Peeved by almost two-month old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday issued a one-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the union’s leadership to resolve their differences or face serious consequences. The students said if the impasse was not resolved within the next seven days, it will mobilise students on a nation-wide riot in what it described as ‘operation occupy Nigeria’. The students’ body appealed to ASUU to return to the classroom and continue negotiation with the Federal Government since the latter claimed to have released over N100 billion for infrastructural development and another N30 billion for allowances. This was the highpoint of a protest by the students who blocked the Asaba end of the River Niger Bridge to press home their demands. The protest caused traffic snarl for several hours as the students stalled movements to the eastern part of the country even as those returning were barred. NANS coordinator in the South-South and South- East, Comrade Chinonso Obasi, stated that students were at the receiving end of the strike and vowed that they would take their destinies in their own hands if the parties failed to reconcile within a week. “We are appealing to ASUU that since the Federal Government has been able to release N100 billion for infrastructural development and N30 billion for allowance, they should go back to classroom and continue their negotiation or agitation. This is our prayer and wish. “We are giving them one week to open the schools or be ready to face corrosive consequences in form of nation-wide demonstration and riots. We are ready to mobilise for that and it will be operation occupy Nigeria,” he said. Lamenting the effect of the strike, Obasi said students have become prone to accidents on the highways and the female students have been reduced to sex hawkers on the streets. His words: “I stand to tell you that a lot of accidents have been recorded and 99.9% of the victims are Nigerian students. If they were in classrooms, they would not have fallen victims of road crashes. “Our female students have become commercial sex hawkers on the streets in order to make ends meet. This colossal effect is more than what ASUU is agitating for. Hence, we can no longer fold our arms and watch things go wrong.” Click link below to view pic Source: http://gbadunaija..com/2013/08/nigerian-students-gives-fg-and-ASUU.html?m=1 |

Lagos spared another high profile killing when assassins attacked the vehicle conveying Chief Vincent Obianodo, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Young Shall Grow transport company to his FESTAC residence. Chief Obianodo escaped, but his driver and Corporal Ngozi Chijioke attached to Patrol and Guard, were not lucky. They were killed. The transport boss was shot in the hand. Two of the attackers were killed by the police. The hoodlums were said to have attempted to kill the transporter but were repelled by his police escort . The suspected assassins trailed him while leaving his office and got him close to his house in FESTAC Town. The gunmen had fired directly at him, but his driver was on the alert as he sped off and the assassins started raining bullets at his vehicle. The police escort from Patrol and Guard unit attached to him was said to have engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel. The Area ‘E’ Commander, Mr. Dan Okoro, who got a distress call, mobilised his men and stormed the scene. After the shoot-out, two suspects and Corporal Chijioke were shot dead. A police officer who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that it was an assassination attempt. “Why we believed so, was that the gunmen fired to kill the man. If it was a kidnap attempt, the gunmen would not want to kill him. The way they fired at the man showed that they wanted him dead,” he said. The state police command’s spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, said the transporter was accosted by some gunmenaround 22 Road Festac Town. “The hoodlums opened fire at him and his driver was shot dead. The man was shot on his hand and a police corporal attached to him was also killed,” she said. According to her, a patrol team that heard the gunshots raced to the scene and on sighting the patrol team, the hoodlums opened fire at the policemen. Ngozi noted that policemen responded and the scene was turned to a battlefield. “When the dust settled, the police shot dead two of the hoodlums and others escaped with bullet wounds. She said the bandits’ Toyota Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) was perforated with bullets, adding that the police recovered one AK 47, one AK 49 riffles and eight magazines loaded with ammunition. Braide said the gunmen’s motive was still unknown, noting that, “because we cannot just narrow it down to assassination, kidnapping or armed robbery until investigation is concluded.” However, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, has appealed to hospitals and members of the public to report anyone with bullet wounds to the nearest police station. The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, on August 22, 2013, Thursday, described the statement credited to the Coordinating Minister of the economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as highly embarrassing. The statement said that the lecturers were making a fresh demand from the Federal Government. Dr. Usman Abubakar, ASUU zonal coordinator in Bauchi, told the newsmen that ASUU was not making fresh demand, but asking for the implementation of existing agreement, while the Minister’s position was opposite. “Contrary to the Minister’s assertion that “ASUU is demanding for N92 billion”, we wish to inform the public that the said amount is a debt, not a demand. It is a debt the Federal Government is owing staff of affected universities (both academic and non-academic) over a period of four years. The Federal Government has to pay, if it has to show signs of a responsible and honorable government.” The ASUU coordinator also expressed shock at the insincerity and antics of the government, saying the Minister’s pronouncement was a deliberate and calculated attempt to blackmail ASUU, confuse the public and reduce ASUU’s patriotic cause to a mere payment of allowances. According to Dr. Abubakar, the Minister’s comment is an indication that government had no intention of honouring the agreement, saying “how could the minister have made the claim of no money to honour the agreement when the finance ministry was represented throughout the negotiations in the 2009 ASUU/ FGN agreement and the MoU. THIS COULD BE SEEN AS BEEN DISHONOURABLE AND DECEIT ACT OF THE FG. Source: http://gbadunaija..com/2013/08/fg-denies-been-indebted-to-ASUU-says.html?m=1 |

Message of Nigerian star actress, Mercy Johnson to all her all Today, I thought of many things I would love to have as birthday gifts and the many dreams I am still pursuing. In all of this I’m not losing sight of the fact that if not for God I might have ended up on the street like the many kids and young adults begging for food and some prostituting to make ends meet. If we know the circumstances that force some of these people on the street, we would spare a thought for them. I am where I am today purely by the grace of God and the grace of people who believed in me from the word go. Recently, I was at the Boys Reform Home, Oregun, Lagos, the discussion I had with the principal Mr. Kotun and much later with the Special Adviser in charge of allremand homes in Lagos set me thinking about the boys and girls on the street. They have dreams too. Can they fulfill those dreams on the street? The answer will likely be no; because I won't be where I am today if I ended up on the street. For this reason, Mercy Johnson Foundation will be doing a lot to get kids off the street. We are not asking people for money or donation, I will do all I can with the resources God has given me, and with the support of my husband to help get these kids off the street and set them on the path where they can begin to pursue their dreams. I want to plead with people, fans, friends and colleagues to spare a thought for the children on the street. We can begin by educating people around us, parents, the children and people in charge of children (Oga- house help relationship, teacher-student relationship, and others) on the need to treat every child like the future of Nigeria depends on it. And truth be told, our future will not be all that enjoyable if we let the scourge of ‘street- children’ fester. By then, the rich will begin to cry. I learnt Lagos State Government has 11 homes where most children picked from the streets are kept, reformed and reunited with their families after counseling. That is an initiative Mercy Johnson Foundation will be supporting and beyond that we will be going to different states to help spread the message-Get kids off the street, save the future. From tomorrow, I will begin to replay some of the lessons I learnt at the boys’ reform home and we all can contribute to getting the kids off the street. I am grateful to everyone that has sent in a birthday message, tweet and gifts. Thank you and God bless you. Mercy Johnson Okojie Wow, what a wonderul actress.... Nine people have been reported dead in separate incidents in Oyo and Borno States yesterday. In the Ibadan, Oyo State tragedy, three people died with five others injured from burns when a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) petrol tanker trying to offload fuel suddenly exploded and caught fire at Orogun Junction on Ojoo Expressway. The three victims were said to have been burnt to death as the fuel flew into the area and exploded, it burnt property and human beings found along its path. Two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and about eight shops in the area were also torched by the raging inferno. The situation got out of hands when the state’s fire service that arrived at the scene ran out of water and had to wait for another vehicle for replenishment. While still waiting for water, the fire went wild and engulfed the surrounding shops and some other houses around including some vehicles parked along the road. The five people who sustained serious burns were rushed to hospital in an Oyo State ambulance. The incident occurred beside Energy Filling Station at Orogun junction along Iwo Road/Ojoo Expressway around 11.30am. Heavy smoke covered the area as most shops and car owners who parked their vehicles in some perimeters close to the scene made frantic efforts to remove them. An eyewitness, Dr. Ayo Osisanwo, told newsmen that the tragedy started when an NNPC truck was offloading fuel from another NNPC truck which had mechanical fault and had broken down in the middle of the road. According to him, the inferno started in the process of technical transfer of the fuel to an empty tanker when the loaded tanker suddenly caught fire. The situation caused heavy traffic snarl as only one lane was used by motorists, just as policemen and Civil Defence operatives had difficult time controlling the traffic. Hoodlums also took advantage of the situation to steal property of victims who had fled the scene to safety. Another eyewitness who does not want his name in print, said:”An NNPC tanker was trying to offload fuel from the other one that fell off by the roadside. Suddenly, the loaded one caught fire and the driver tried hard to drive it away from the one already burning. He hurriedly abandoned the vehicle after the rescue”. Six members of the youth vigilance group (a.k.a. Civilian JTF) were yesterday killed in a border town in Borno State by Boko Haram insurgents. Sources said the youths were shot dead at about 1.30am yesterday at Damasak, headquaters of Mobbar Local Government in a house where they slept after the day’s business. They were said to have gone to the town, about 187 kilometres from Maiduguri to sell jewelleries on Monday, being the market day. “They decided to spend the night since it was late, but unknown to them, their assailants were close by. They were shot on the head and chest while sleeping,” a member of the Civilian JTF said. Five of the victims were said to have chartered a cab belonging to one of their colleagues also killed by the insurgents. Emotion was high among friends and relatives of the deceased when their bodies were brought to Maiduguri yesterday through Baga Road. The names of the deceased were given as Ismail Alhaji Bunu,36,Malam Goni,27, Buzu Bukar, 27, Mohammed Modu, 20, Aliyu Jibrin,30 and Bukar Bako,20. A member of the group, Kariyama Mohammed, who also went to Damasak but did not sleep in the same house with the victims, said he learnt of the tragedy yesterday morning when they were supposed to return to Maiduguri. “We travelled together to Damasak to trade in necklace but I did not sleep in the same house with them. It was in the morning that I learnt of their death.” Sources said the assailants were four and had shot their victims dead “when they were fast asleep,” adding that there is no trace of their whereabouts yet. Leader of the Civilian JTF on Baga Road, Bakura Adamu, expressed sadness over the incident, noting that the youths were members of the group who worked tirelessly to defend the state against the insurgents. Damasak is located on the Nigeria-Niger border with high commercial activities especially jewelleries, clothes and gold. Security sources said many of the insurgents that fled their Karenuwa, Marte camp following the offensive by the Special Forces in the early days of the state of emergency, may have hid in some villages around the border areas.
