Most of these learned Fellows are not after all learned. They lack basic understanding of theconstitution they carry around. If only they had known what fundamental rights entail, they wouldn't have put up such behaviour.
Hijab is one of fundamental rights of Muslim women and it does not trample on other people's rights. It has never lost court cases and it's not going to lose this time around too. Continuous antagonism to Muslim rights would rather make them stronger and agitate for more that were hitherto suppressed.

Let them practice their fundamental rights in the Sharia court. undecided

The Council of Legal Education is very clear on what kind of clothes can be worn to court by lawyers and to the call to bar ceremonies. If they do not wear hijab, does it mean they will not be able to function?

Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar a Nigerian jurist and former Chief Justice of Nigeria from July 2012 to November 2014, was called to the English Bar in November, 1966. Did she ever wear a hijab as part of her wig and gown to the court, or to dispense justice? shocked

How come NSCIA did not advocate that female Muslim lawyers should wear hijab to court, during her tenure? Do you know how many female Muslims have been called to bar, since 1962, when the law school started in Nigeria?

So those female Muslim lawyers did not know about the fundamental rights of wearing hijabs?

Your Sharia courts do not admit women as practising counsels. So why haven't you protested against that denial of their fundamental human right?

Y are we too sentimental in this country. We adopted our legal laws, our Constitution, DOs and DON'Ts in our law system from British and America and their laws were designed to favor the Christian religion. These Nations have upgraded their laws to accommodate other religions.

If Nigeria is secular country as claimed by many, Sundays should be a working day and not a work-free day i.e an hour shud be spare for prayers and workers shud return to their various work places like Fridays. Or better still, make Friday a work-free day.

Must I put ma profession over ma religion. Y shud religion be a basis of stereotyping a particular set of people.

Christians are too selfish on dis matter at hand

No, it is you folks that are too selfish and backward. sad These working days (Monday - Friday) are a standard feature, in many countries worldwide. You always elevate your religion above your profession, even when both are not mutually entwined.

The only part your religion should play in your profession, is to ensure that you exhibit honesty, integrity, hardwork, transparency, accountability, thoroughness, skill and accuracy in the way you do your job. That's all. No need to bring any other religious practice into the workplace.

Religion should submit to the law of the land. The land or country is the keeper of peace not religion organisations.
Everyone cannot be allowed to put on whatever they like just because their religion allows it.

Every organisation has it rules and regulation guiding its operations. Professional bodies have codes of conduct which the members must follow.
These codes of conduct must be adhered to by every member and aspiring member.

Removal of hijab is not removal of pants and braziers.
If every one is allowed to wear whatever they wish because of their religion or fundamental human rights some will put on rubbish and nonsense things.

How would it look if police women starts putting on hijab and church caps on their uniforms.

These people won't listen. In their eyes, the hijab is what will make their women enter heaven....not their good works, devotion or pious attitude.

Politics / Re: Hijab Controversy: Reps Intervene, set To Investigate The Alleged Right Violation by Vivere: 9:04am On Dec 20, 2017
abefedammy:

The House of Representatives on Tuesday intervened in the raging controversy over the refusal of the Nigerian Law School to call a graduate, Amasa Firdaus, to the Bar.
According to Punchng, the House directed its Committees on Justice and Judiciary to investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations to the floor. .

The resolution followed a motion moved by a member from Kano State, Mr. Abubakar Danburam-Nuhu. He had faulted the Law School on the grounds that it infringed on the fundamental rights of Firdaus. .

The University of Ilorin graduate was due to be called to the Bar on December 12. However, the Law School stopped her after she insisted on wearing the Hijab. On its part, the school insisted she must adorn a wig, the conventional head cover worn by lawyers. .

Firdaus had been quoted as saying that she opted to wear the Islamic head scarf to challenge the status quo. On Tuesday, Danburam-Nuhu, while arguing his motion, told the House that under Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution, Firdaus was entitled to dress the way she liked. .

“The section supersedes any provision by any government agency or institution”, he stated. He said the wig or the dress code of lawyers was borrowed from the West, adding that Nigeria must not impose it on its citizens because it came from the West. .

Danburam-Nuhu claimed that in the UK and some African countries, including Kenya, graduates were allowed to use the Hijab during graduation or other similar ceremonies.

http://www.lodgerill.com.ng/2017/12/hijab-controversy-reps-intervene-ask.html?m=1

These reps are hopeless, especially that one called Danburam-Nuhu who moved the motion.

There are far more pressing issues that need to be investigated and addressed in Nigeria, such as lack of infrastructure even within his own district, fuel scarcity, abandoned projects and mismanagement of funds by govt agencies...yet, the only thing he is making noise about is one girl's wish to wear hijab to court or a call to bar ceremony?

A girl that already signed up to abide by the dress code and regulations of the law school? Was that why this rep was elected?

This country don spoil. .. angry

U keep repeating Urself, making same comment over n over again.

Limit urself to what ur know(Ur reasearch), in Nigeria be it urban or rural it is NO big deal for a girl to pick up herself after pregnancy. The neighbour I talked about grew up in Festac, in Uran have seen single mothers going 4NCE
I have seen here on Nairaland "HIV single mother living her dream", your initial statement is nothing but a FALLACY

And your statement is riddled with errors. What is the total population of single teenage mothers in Nigeria? What is the proportion of those who pick themselves up after pregnancy, and go on to make a success of their lives and career? What is the proportion of those who drop out of school and never complete their education, never make a headway in their lives or end up in dire straits at the end of the day?

You have just seen a few examples of those who moved on with their education, out of thousands who fall by the wayside, and you are concluding that it is no big deal, and making it seem as if it is a norm. For every single teenage mother that makes a success of her life after giving birth, there are thousands who do not.

So stop being ignorant, and quit talking about what you do not know. You are still a kid. Grow up and learn. undecided

TEENAGE pregnancy in Nigeria has been on an alarming increase in recent times. It has become a menace that plagues the lives of young girls in this century. It is defined as an unintended pregnancy in female humans who are between the ages of 15–19 years; it can occur in ages as low as 12 years.

As of 2013, statistics by the National Population Commission showed that about 23 per cent of adolescent women aged 15-19 years were already mothers or pregnant with their first child.

Researches have also shown that the prevalence of this menace is highest in the North-West zone (36 per cent) and lowest in the South-East and South-West zones (8 per cent each) of the country.

About 80 per cent of these pregnant teenagers were totally unprepared for this situation in which they ignorantly or innocently found themselves. Teenage pregnancy carries a social stigma in many communities and cultures....

Amongst the most troubling consequences for adolescent moms is not finishing their education. They get to be drop outs and represent a high risk factor to the country’s economic development.

This absence of training can bring about unemployment or occupation choices that are poorly paid and uncertain. A low wage implies poor living conditions and not being able to manage the cost of satisfactory human services or even fundamental necessities. https://www.google.com.ng/amp/www.tribuneonlineng.com/teenage-pregnancy-silent-menace-nigeria/%3famp_markup=1

care to post a link to this?

none of you have been able to come up with anything other than empty conjecture.

show me unequivolcally quebec safety standards that say specifically that a hijab should not be worn with a hard hat

you see that? that is a female engineer in schlumberger , an international oil servicing firm with the same rigid safety standards across every continent

this is one in halliburton

these are companies with much more rigid safety standards than vivere and sons quebec oil company tongue

It does not say a hijab should not be worn underneath a hard hat, but if any item of religious clothing (e.g. hijab) conflicts or interferes with health and safety standards, then employers are not under an obligation to accommodate its use, by their employees. Here, read this:

Safety considerations are often an issue raised when it comes to religious attire or comportment. If an accommodation is likely to cause significant health and safety risks, this could be considered “undue hardship.”

Employers, housing providers and service organizations have an obligation to protect the health and safety of all their employees, clients and tenants, including people who observe a creed, as part of doing business safely, and as part of fulfilling their legal requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. See section 9.9.3 for more on handling health and safety risks.

In some cases, clothing or gear with a health or safety rationale may constitute a bona fide requirement....

Considerations when dealing with dress codes include:

What is the exact nature of the religious or creed observance?
What is the reason for the uniform or dress code?
What steps can be taken to accommodate the person short of undue hardship?
Are there alternatives?
Are health or safety factors involved?

[b]With all due respect sir, you and a whole lot of others are missing the point.

Yes, she has a fundamental human right to practice her religion under S38 of the federal constitution and since hijab is enshrined as part of her religion she is entitled to wear it at all times.

However, The Council of Legal Education provides a Code of Conduct for dressing during the Call to Bar ceremony. It has been the case that during the ceremony, lawyers are not allowed to cover their ears with any cloth save the wig. This dress code prohibits any form of such covering, not to mention the obligation to remain in black jackets, skirts and pants. By extension therefore, persons who answer to religious groups that emphasize the need for such coverings as an act of piety or modesty, must either elect to be bound by the rules or opt out of the procedure.

Now, on the point of the rule either being harsh and unaccommodating, it can even be challenged in the high court on the likelihood of it violating a fundamental human right, but such challenge is not an issue because the rules set by the Council of Legal Education are disinterested rules; not influenced by undue religious considerations and it can be aptly justified under Section 10 of the Constitution which describes Nigeria as state fashioned to be secular.

The secularity in this case doesn’t mean that Nigeria respects all religions but in fact means that no religion is considered or respected above what is reasonably justifiable to be appropriate in an environment meant for all and Sundry.

Going by that, the secularity in the country is the reason why a Federal University can admit anyone from all walks of life regardless of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.

Also, Section 4(1) of the Legal Practitioners Act empowers the Body of Benchers to determine what amounts to good character which is essential to the admittance into the Bar. The Code of Conduct is reasonably justifiable in a democratic society and in the interest of public policy, the uniformity must be maintained. As it is a body of regulations privy to all students, if one is incapable of complying with the rules and regulations stipulated in law school or any of its ceremonies therein, one may elect to opt out of the program.

It’s that simple.

Madam, it is still NOT common. sad Your neighbour's case is the exception, and not the rule. I have worked extensively with young teenagers in a variety of situations, in Nigeria and abroad. Out of every 30 teenage mothers who got pregnant at an early age, maybe only 2 or 3 will end up completing their education. Most of them drop out and cannot go any further, for several reasons. So many people out there have the will but lack the resources

No sir, I did not miss the point. sad The fact that she has rich and supportive parents, does not guarantee anything. I have worked with young people, and one common thing with them, is their inclination for often taking the easy way out.

In Nigeria, achieving such a feat would have been difficult for such a girl, due to cultural and religious reasons. Her parents may have disowned her, thrown her out or even declined to offer her support, either because they were so disappointed in her, or they had other mouths to feed. sad

She, on the other hand, may have chosen to pursue an elusive relationship with the guy who impregnated her, by choosing to ignore or forsake her parents, because of some so-called love. I have seen teenage girls run away from home, to move in with a boy their parents disapprove of, simply because they got pregnant. sad It doesn't matter how much love and support the girl's parents offer, at that point on time. The love she has for the boy, would have beclouded her senses, and caused her to turn away from them. Getting back on track, after falling so far, isn't always easy.

It takes focus, determination and clarity to get back on the right path, after making such a colossal mistake. And to achieve a 4.0 GPA shows she was not stupid, to start with. undecided
