A simple question? grin grin grin grin Omo is that a new term or something? You asked a "simple question" on something a google search could have easily answered for you.

FYI:

Omisore once accused Aregbesola of not being an Engineer and has no Coren number among many other ridiculous and baseless accusations. 24hrs later the media showed him that Aregbesola is indeed a Coren certified engineer and a Fellow of NSE.

Pray tell, how is your "simple question" any different from Omisore's "dellusion"?

You are really confused. Yes, Google exists but I chose not to use it, and chose to ask a question on NL. Since when has that become a crime?

And why do you suffer from a persecution complex? Is Omisore haunting you, that you now see everyone in the guise of Omisore? Seek help for whatever afflicts you.

The army aviation will not displace the roles of the airforce; they will certainly not be flying fighter jets or advanced reconneissance aircrafts or EWACS. Their purpose is to enhance army operations through quick search and rescue missions, evacuation, and providing air cover using light attack helicopters. This will make it easier for the airforce to focus on heavy bombardments and advanced recon. It will also induce efficiency without the common inter-parastatal bureaucracy and rivalry that usually slows down military operations.
Oh, thanks for the info. Are you an Air force officer? You seem to know a lot about their operations.

Angelanest:
A Nigerian lawyer and community organizer, Franc Utoo, has weighed in on the trending Hijab controversy after Firdaus Amasa was denied being called to Bar in Abuja recently after she refused to remove her Hijab. Franc Utoo who once posed with Halima Buhari, the president's daughter in Hijab has shared his own take on the issue.

Read what he shared below;

CALL TO BAR:

Firdaus Amasa Up To A Veiled Mischief.

I have refrained from commenting on the trending controversy surrounding the defiance of one Firdaus Amasa (an Ilorin Muslim lady) to adhere to the hallowed Regulation of appropriate dressing for Call to the Nigerian Bar. This is because most commentators supportive of her infractions have added the delicate colours of religion to the topic. Sadly, I have observed many Lawyers here and many of my Law School mates, who obeyed the Rules themselves, but now chose to give credence to the lady's improper conduct. Unfortunately, we have chosen to elevate mundane issues above more important matters that will prosper and progress our country.

For a start, I am a 'small authority' on matters of students discipline, regulation and conduct in the Nigerian Law School, having been the Head of Bar part 1 (Foreign Students) programme and the first Bar 1 student to be voted President of the Students Representatives Council (SRC) during the Bar part 2 programme, and thus becoming the longest serving President of Law School students.

I have intervened on countless occasions to retrieve seized jewelleries of ladies and 'inappropriate' ties and other attires of male students from the Students Affairs office. I intervened on students campus postings. I was awarded the "Face of Nigerian Law School" and "Most Influential Student" during our time and up to this day I maintain a great amount of influence in that noble ground.

Even as President then, I was kindly turned back twice for wearing simple skin slippers on Kaftan instead of sandals, on Friday. I was once reprimanded for wearing black tie with touches of red. I operated under a Muslim DG of the Nigerian Law School, my boss - the amiable Prof. Tahir Mamman (SAN), who made sure the Regulations were applied strictly.

On two occasions I was invited to the Students Disciplinary Committee to be informed of the expulsion of students. One that hurts me deeply was the case of a fellow Bar 1 students (the Secretary of our Bar 1 Electoral Committee) who was expelled with just a week to the Bar finals. Reason: the School received a petition from his wife in the UK (where he schooled and was resident)on some flimsy grounds spurred by the allegations that he married another wife in Nigeria, on coming for his Law School. Thomas Ogwumba later died after some of us were Called to Bar.

The Council of Legal Education regulates the affairs of the Nigerian Law School up to the time of Call to Bar. The Body of Benchers is responsible for the formal Call to the Bar. It was established under the Legal Practitioners Act (LPA), now CAP L11, LFN 2004.

Both of these bodies make certain regulations towards upholding the core values of the legal profession and issues of discipline. On admission to the Law School, students are made to sign forms that bind them to the Rules and Regulations of the School, and towards the end of the programme students are again made to sign the Benchers form and deposed to a jurat indicating that they have CONSENTED to abide by the Rules and Regulations and all other instructions necessarily incidental.

The Law School dressing code sometimes have little variations on subjects relating to Hijab, but it has always been static for Call to Bar: no Hijab, no weave-on, no jewelleries, etc. Presently, the Kano campus of the Law School located in a strict Muslim state, does NOT allow the use of Hijab! The Abuja campus allows for a black, light Hijab but only a head scarf at best for Dinners.

In the attached pictures, 1 is me and Halima Mohammadu Buhari, the daughter of the President Buhari of Nigeria, during our Bar 1 programme in July 2012. Such Hijab was permissible then. Picture 2 was Dinner dressing with head scarf for ladies. Pictures 3 &4 are those of the same Halima Buhari during her Call to Bar. No scarf, no Hijab, only compliance (for a 2 hour programme). She consented for her 'rights' to be curtailed. I used the analogy of the President's daughter because it is a well known fact that she comes from a strictly devout Muslim family. All religious scriptures admonish us to obey God (Allah) while also respecting earthly authorities (Caesar) - see Quran 4:59.

In the Law School, those who live in the hostels consented to their freedom of movement to be 'breached.' Abuja headquarters campus hostels are locked with chains and locks every midnight. No one comes out nor goes in. That is the Rule.

There was a night I was woken up by a group led by the current Team Manager of Rangers FC of Enugu, Amobi Ezeaku, to the effect that a thief just burgled a student's room on the first floor via the balcony and I had to reach out to the Hostel Porter to open the Hostel gate to enable us be in pursuit of the felon. The delay in opening the gate enabled the thief escape.

Nigerian legal system differs from those of other jurisdictions to some extent. This is why I fault the unfortunate statement allegedly made by the NBA President in his comparison of our Bar to that of New York. Some British Inns, for instance, allow for the wearing of Hijab. My classmate (an Indian Sikh), Kernail Singh, was Called dressed in his turban.

I know as a fact that Black and White is a strict dress code for Nigerian University and Law School students, but in England where I studied for my undergraduate Degree in Law, no one cares if you come to the class wearing football shorts and basketball vest with 'unity' cap. There were times my Jurisprudence module lecturer would appear in a tight T-shirt exposing his cute biceps and crazy tattoos, and my mind would whisper to itsel, "this won't happen in Naija!" In the BPTC programme, students appear in various colours of suits and shirts.

Back to Firdaus Amasa, her defiance was clearly premeditated and designed for a veiled mischief. On the said day of her Call, after rudely standing against the traditional dress code, she was invited to the Benchers Room behind the stage at the International Conference Centre to meet with a Life Bencher and former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Alfa Belgore (himself a STRICT Muslim/Ilorin elder) who told her to remove the veil and join her colleagues in the hall. She refused.

The Secretary of the Body of Benchers (a devout Muslim woman), Mrs Turaki, also joined in instructing her to do the needful. She refused again. Incidentally, Statutorily, the Body of Benchers Secretary is vested with the responsibility to ensure that Rules, Regulations and Procedures of the Body are adhered to according to stipulated law.

In the end, by opting for the legal profession in Nigeria and by agreeing to come to the Law School and accepting to sign all the forms with attendant jurats, one has unambiguously concur to abide by the Rules, Regulations and Procedures of the Council of Legal Education and Body of Benchers. The whole gist points out to one thing: Volenti non fit injuria, put in other words, CONSENT! Therefore, no Firdaus Amasa, her instigators and supporters are potent enough to alter this time hallowed procedure deeply steeped in tradition and conservatism.

I bet that the conservative nature of the Benchers may lead them to applying more sanctions against the lady for even claiming she acted on purpose.

As a country, the challenges we face are real and deep. We can only surmount them if we concentrate on things that unite us rather on such things as the menace of sentimentalism that seek to further divide us.

Yours In Service,

Franc Fagah Utoo, Esq. LQC (Malaysia); LL.B Hons (Newcastle, UK ); BL (Abuja)
*Former President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Nigerian Law School, Abuja.

Nothing objective about this piece. sad It is a highly biased article openly supporting the Firdaus decision to wear a hijab under her wig and gown, to the call to bar ceremony.

My question is this: She studied law for 5 years at the university, and spent 1 year in law school. She was fully aware of the dress code for lawyers. undecided She cannot plead ignorance on this score.

1). So why on earth during those years, didn't she head a protest or ask that she be allowed to wear a hijab as part of the prescribed dress code for court appearances? shocked

2). Why didn't she head for court, just once during all those years, in order to challenge the prescribed dress code, so that the hijab would be approved as part of the dress code for female Muslim lawyers?

3). Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar is a Nigerian jurist and was former Chief Justice of Nigeria from July 2012 to November 2014. She is also a devout Muslim. Why didn't Firdaus address a petition to her during her tenure to ask her to prevail on the Council for Legal Education to review it's rules concerning lawyer's dressing, so that the hijab could be included in the dress code? undecided

Instead, she waited sheepishly until the day of the call to bar to break the rules and create controversy, as if such controversy would help her get her way. sad She should find out from all the senior female Muslim lawyers and judges, who have been practising law long before she joined the profession, if the hood does indeed make the monk.

Does the lack of a hijab hamper her efficiency as a lawyer?

I am sorry to say but you are speaking from a position of gross ignorance. You have no idea of what a micro refinery is. You think what what the people you called entrepreneurs do is actually refining, no. What they do is called cooking. They steal crude and cook it in drums. Most of the lighter hydrocarbons and heavier condensates are discarded, thereby polluting the environment, the cooking produces mainly impure diesel and kerosene and very little petrol. Now how do you license that?

Small micro refineries cost millions of dollars, and that is not even putting into consideration cost of licences, land, running costs and cost of raw materials - crude. It was refinery business that killed a brother in law, he invested millions of dollars in trying to set up a small refinery, at the end of the day, he died of a heart attack.

Leave am. angry That small boy you responded to, is not ready to learn. The diesel the illegal refiners produce from the stolen crude, is so bad that it causes engines to knock, and impairs the proper functioning of diesel gensets and machinery. It is fake, adulterated hogwash. So they even cause losses to everyone on all sides. undecided

Their actions pollute the environment, their theft of crude causes huge losses to the exploration firms and govt, and the diesel they sell damages the assets of the buyers. So the boy wants govt to license the criminality of the illegal refiners.

Rule 36 (a) of the Rules of Professional Conduct in the Legal Profession Revised (2007) expressly decries the "wearing of apparel and ornament" that draws attention to a legal practitioner appearing before a judge, the hijab does not in anyway fall into such apparel ornament that can be decried upon, because it is a constitutional right that no bye-law can suppress on a permanent basis.

Again, can a judgement in respect to an organization she's yet to be part of affect her?

This is a blanket judgement.
The hijab definitely falls under the category of an apparel that draws attention to the legal practitioner, appearing before a judge. It is not an inconspicuous item of clothing, like a lapel pin, a pocket square or a handkerchief.

You preaching to me?. I will not let you vindicate christianity. You can come up with all types of excuses. Their footprints are on Africa.

I dont deny that there were Atheists amongst them. What is widely known macro wise is white christians are slave masters backed by their Bible, period. @underlined, it is the same way you non-muslims see anyone who shout "Allahu Akbar" and then blow up something, you quickly tag him a muslim. What goes around comes around. Deal With It

Now you are talking. Hence, Nigeria can not be more secular than them. Any attempt by any nigerian christian to discriminate against muslim women who chose to wear hijab, is a violation of the nigerian constitution. If Nigerian officials are sworn in on Quran and Bible, who the hell has the nerve to criticize hijab?

I don't dispute this. For instance airport etc. But not Bar for crying out loud.I have posted picture of a muslim Judge in New York

Tell this to your fellow believers. Better still, go to America and tell them that "rights" aren't absolute. They will give you middle finger shocked You know what that means, dont you?

What can be more risky than 9/11?. Hijab survived grin cheesy

Their ban is not absolute either. They are having internal struggles with the ban from opposition parties.

As i have said before, all you have to do is board a plane to NY and remove hijab from a woman on the street and see what happens. In nigeria, christians still criticize hijabi on the street and in school. On the other hand, many muslim women wear hijab in schools in new york and it is considered constitutional right, just as much as the right to own guns

Madam, you seem to love making a mountain out of a molehill. Initially, you asserted that the colonial masters were all Christians. Your error was pointed out, and you turned round to claim I will "not let you vindicate christianity." Who is vindicating Christianity? I am just setting the records straight. sad

Secondly, you claimed " What is widely known macro wise is white christians are slave masters backed by their Bible, period." Again, you have erred by blandly generalising and grouping all those slave masters as Christians. shocked

Was a survey conducted to ascertain this during the slave trade era? Please paste the results here. What is widely known is that most of those slave merchants were non-Christians, while the abolitionists of the inhuman trade, were mostly Christians.

The Western countries that banned religious dressing like the niqab, burqa etc., had some opposition, but the bans are still firmly in place. It is the nature of democratic societies to protest and debate everything, but at the end of the day, the matter is put to vote, a consensus is reached and a law is passed. sad

Except for a few isolated cases, many of those bans have not been revoked. What does that tell you? Their security measures are more important, than a piece of religious clothing. The hood does not make the monk, in the same way the hijab does not make you a good or bad Muslim. It is your actions, piety, devotion and soul that matters.

A few more Western countries are even considering placing a ban on religious clothing, for security reasons. Go and check. undecided In Italy, a woman was asked to remove her hijab as part of security measures, at a certain airport. She refused. They denied her access to the plane. She decided to take her flight at another airport, within the same country. When the airport personnel at the 2nd airport also asked her to remove her hijab, she complied. What does that tell you?

As for your US, which you keep waving as a standard, kindly note that not all Muslims share your view. The terrorist that screams Allahu Akbar like you said, before going on a bombing spree does not claim to be acting in the name of any other religion, but Islam. So what do you want the public to call him? An Amadioha worshipper?

In the US, it has been said that female Muslim soldiers serving in the US military, are allowed to wear religious clothing when in uniform, so long as their clothing does not pose: health or safety hazard, impair the use of weapons or machinery, or impairs the accomplishment of the mission at hand. So even their constitutional rights, have limits, and there are exceptions to the rule. You can show the US military your middle finger, if you do not like this caveat. undecided

Lol, Atheists?. Too late to come up with that crap. Atheists yet they handed us christianity?. You are incredible. Fact that you as some point agreed that wig is to christianity, hence, the implication is they forced muslim too to embrace christian headrag. Again, i dont doubt it is about money. But if you wanna know constitutional rights are involved, all you have to do is take off muslim woman's hijab on the street of the street of New York and see what happens. Your ass will be locked up. Besides, don't you see where it says about discriminations?

Can you see the mistake you are making? You are assuming that all the colonial masters were Christians. That is an error. Some were Christians and those were the first set of missionaries. The next set were business men and merchants, so they opened up trade frontiers with the colonies, on behalf of their govt. Alongside this set were teachers and medical doctors. So these ones promoted education and medicine. A large number of the.merchants, doctors etc were atheists. Go back into history, and check. They engaged in slave trade and oppressive acts.

You keep holding up New York as your standard, yet there are many Muslims in New York who do not wear the hijab, and there are several non-Muslims who do not like the hijab or support it. The authorities are merely trying to protect everybody's rights - both Muslims and nob-Muslims, alike.

Even at that, there are some grey areas where such clothing like niqab, burqa etc, needs to be shifted aside, to allow for easy identification.

When it comes to constitutional rights, you should realise that the freedom to swing your arms, ends where the next person's nose, begins. Rights are not absolute, and do not occur in isolation.

Tomorrow, the same New York authorities might wake up to ban it, if they feel it constitutes a security risk.

A few western European countries have banned the burqa and niqab, for security reasons. Yet, you fail to mention those ones. Is it because they prefer to uphold security above religious preferences?

As for the subway authorities in New York, constitutional rights do NOT play a part in their acceptance of any advert. I have seen an ad promoting Buddhist philosophy on the subway, before. The acceptance of adverts, is driven by pecuniary gains - no more, no less!

my point is communicated. Wig used by nigerian lawyer was introduced by the colonial masters, and colonial masters are christians. Hence, wig is euphemism to christianity. For subway, you are just correct which suggests that it is still about constitutional right. Now your point is?

The wig was introduced by the colonial masters, but were they all Christians? Many of them were atheists. As for the subway adverts, it is about raising the revenue base of the subway, and not about constitutional rights. They did not accept to put up those ads, based on constitutional rights, but to raise money. Do you get it now?

Makkah ad in new York city subway are you more secularized than America?. You need to remove hate from your heart.
Empiree:
This is niqa (fave veil) currently being advertised by new York authority in theIr subway platform. Who the hell is Nigeria?
People can advertise anything in the subway in New York. It doesn't mean anything. There are spaces meant for adverts on the wall, and once you pay the required fees then you are free to put up your ad, once it does not conflict with the advertising codes. It is simply a source of revenue for them.

It does not mean that the New York subway authorities endorse the message in your advert, neither does it mean they agree with its contents, or they would adopt it. undecided

If an IFA worshipper were to place an ad on the subway of the New York Train platform, it would be accepted. In fact, it might just be placed side by side with the advert on the niqab. wink

For your info, the niqab has been banned by France, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium and a few towns in Italy.

Hehehhe...don't waste your time, my brother. cheesy He is obsessed with the hijab. I feel sorry for the women who wear hijabs under their helmets though. The heat must be stifling for them. In Ontario and Quebec in Canada, safety regulations take precedence over religious dressing and preferences. You cannot wear a hijab if it conflicts with safety regulations or procedures.
