While a Walmart eye doctor may offer eye exams at more affordable prices, this does not mean you will be compromising on eye care. Optometrists, regardless of where they work, are all licensed to treat and diagnose vision problems. The official title for an optometrist is Doctor of Optometry, or OD for short.

Typically, a Walmart optome trist is an independent contractor, meaning that he or she works in the field of optometry, but not at WalMart. This means that they have more control over their prices than Wal-Mart as a chain.

In the case of Walmart, there are always independent optometrists on site, either within the Vision Center or in a small office outside the store entrance or exit.

Comparing Optometrists at Walmart to Other Eye Care Professionals
Optometrists at Walmart are fully trained and licensed to practice as optometrists. Like all optometrists, they are able to help you with clear vision and check the health of your eyes. The difference is that optometrists at Wal mart excel in diagnosing and treating everyday vision problems, as opposed to more serious or complex eye cases. This is also true for most optometrists working in stores such as Wal mart, Target, or Costco.

This may be something to consider, depending on your personal situation. Optometrists in a specific location or clinic tend to be better equipped to diagnose and manage a variety of eye-related cases than optometrists in a store setting. When working in a clinic setting, they may also have the ability to access other eye doctors for a second opinion if necessary.

If you have specific health concerns about your eyes, you may want to speak with an ophthalmologist or ophthalmologic surgeon in a private clinic.

Which tests will a Walmart optometrist perform?
Your Walmart optometrist will perform a comprehensive eye exam — a routine check-up to find out the general health of your eyes. Wal mart is licensed to offer the same complete eye exam as any other ophthalmologist.

If the main reason for your visit is one of the four main types of refractive error – nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia – an eye doctor at the store may be a good option. These all cause varying levels of blurriness at different distances.

During a regular workday, from Walmart will perform a variety of routine eye tests. These typically include:
Visual acuity test
Detection of mild to moderate nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia
An examination of the inside of your eye
Glaucoma test (also called the “air puff” test)
Peripheral vision test
Eye movement test
Color blindness test
After the examination, the eye doctor will give you a prescription specifically for your vision. You can then use it to purchase prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses.

Do Walmart eye doctors charge less?
Without insurance, there is a good chance you will pay less for an eye exam with an optometrist at Walmart than you would at a private eye care clinic.

In a national survey we conducted of eye doctors, we found that the average optometrist at Wal mart charged $73 for an exam, which is $22 less than the national average of $95.

However, when compared to other “Vision Center” locations, Walmart charges $4 less on average, which is much closer to the average price.

Of course, prices vary from place to place. It’s quite possible that an optometrist at a Walmart in your area will charge $20 or $30 less than one a few miles away.

Fortunately, the doctor or assistant will be happy to inform you of the amount they charge before scheduling your appointment.

If you plan to use your vision insurance benefits for your exam, be sure to check with them beforehand to see if they are accepted.”

In conclusion, visiting a Walmart eye doctor for your optical needs can be a convenient and cost-effective option for you and your family. With local eye doctors located inside the store, you can easily access their services for eye exams, treatment, and even eyeglasses.

This is a great option for those without insurance or looking for a more budget-friendly option for their medical needs. So next time you’re in need of an eye exam or new eyeglasses, be sure to check out your local Wal mart’s optical department and see the difference it can make for you and your family.

Bonus: What Type of Return Policy Comes with my Glasses?
This is the place where Walmart’s vision center gets an A+ in my book.

Not only do they offer a 60-day return policy (no questions asked), but they also offer a 1-year warranty on frames and lenses.

So if you have a deep scratch on the lens within the first 365 days, you can return it for a full replacement lens. Similarly, if you sit on your frame or step on it or break it in any other way, you can return it for a free replacement as well.

Walmart will even pay for the return shipping fees, which is a nice touch.
