Sports / Cristiano Ronaldo Splashes £8.5 Million On The Bugatti Centodieci by Wells98(m): 9:22am On Aug 01, 2020
Juventus superstar Cristaino Ronaldo has continued to pamper himself with yet another lavish gift - an £8.5million Bugatti Centodieci.
The supercar, one of only ten in the world, has reportedly been modified to suit the Portuguese icon's needs and will be delivered to him around the turn of the year with the vehicle described as officially purchased.
Ronaldo starred once again this campaign in Turin, netting 31 goals in Serie A as Juventus clinched a ninth-straight league title.
The 35-year-old has bought eight Ferraris, as well as several Rolls Royces, BMWs and McLarens over the years - but he has now settled on a much rarer and exclusive motor.
According to Corriere della Sera, Ronaldo opted to splash the hefty amount of cash on the expensive toy after adding another piece of silverware to his glittering collection.
The Centodieci was designed to celebrate 110 years since the foundation of the French high-performance manufacturer.
With a maximum speed, which is electronically limited, of 236mph, Ronaldo will surely be the envy of every modern car enthusiast.
The expensive purchase comes days after it was revealed that the former Real Madrid strike

Nairaland / General / Social Media Giants Remove Viral Video With False Coronavirus Claims That Trump by Wells98(m): 11:37am On Jul 29, 2020
(CNN Business)A video featuring a group of doctors making false and dubious claims related to the coronavirus was removed by Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube after going viral online Monday.

The video, published by the right-wing media outlet Breitbart News, featured a group of people wearing white lab coats calling themselves "America's Frontline Doctors" staging a press conference in front of the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC.
President Trump shared multiple versions of the video with his 84 million Twitter followers Monday night despite the dubious claims running counter to his administration's own public health experts. Spokespersons for the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
During the press conference, a speaker who identifies herself as a doctor makes a number of dubious claims, including that "you don't need masks" to prevent spread of the coronavirus, and that recent studies showing hydroxychloroquine is ineffective for the treatment of Covid-19 are "fake science" sponsored by "fake pharma companies."
"This virus has a cure, it's called hydroxychloroquine, zinc, and Zithromax," the woman claims. "You don't need masks, there is a cure."
The claims run contrary to multiple studies on the anti-malarial drug and advice from public health officials to prevent spread of the virus.
A study found that neither hydroxychloroquine alone nor hydroxychloroquine plus azithromycin appeared to affect the condition of patients at the 15-day mark. Additionally, unusual heart rhythms and elevated liver-enzyme levels were more frequent in patients receiving hydroxychloroquine alone or with azithromycin, according to the study.
The video quickly went viral on Facebook, becoming one of the top performing posts on the platform with more than 14 million views before it was taken down Monday night for promoting misinformation. It was shared nearly 600,000 times, according to Crowdtangle, a data-analytics firm owned by Facebook.
"We've removed this video for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19," a Facebook spokesperson told CNN, adding that the platform is "showing messages in News Feed to people who have reacted to, commented on or shared harmful COVID-19-related misinformation that we have removed, connecting them to myths debunked by the WHO."
The Facebook spokesperson later acknowledged on Tuesday afternoon that it took "several hours" for the company to enforce its standards and remove the video. The spokesperson said Facebook will conduct "a review to understand why this took longer than it should have."
Twitter worked to scrub the video late Monday night after Trump shared versions of the video that amassed hundreds of thousands of views.
"We're taking action in line with our Covid misinfo policy," a Twitter spokesperson told CNN.
Twitter took action against the videos that Trump retweeted. By early Tuesday morning the videos were no longer able to be viewed on his account. Twitter also took action on a version of the video posted by Donald Trump Jr. and others shared by Breitbart News.
The video was also removed by YouTube, where it had been viewed more than 40,000 times. Users attempting to access the video late Monday were greeted with a message that said it had been removed for "violating YouTube's Community Guidelines."
A Breitbart spokesperson did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment.
According to the website for America's Frontline Doctors, the group is led by Dr. Simone Gold, a Los Angeles-based emergency medicine specialist who has previously been featured on Fox News for her views that stay-at-home orders are harmful. Gold told the Associated Press in May she wanted to speak out against stay-home orders because there was "no scientific basis that the average American should be concerned" about Covid-19.
America's Frontline Doctors could not be reached for comment late Monday.
One woman featured in the video, identified as Dr. Stella Immanuel, is a Houston-based physician and founder of the Fire Power Ministries church. On her website and in sermons posted on YouTube, Immanuel has made strange medical claims, including that sex with "tormenting spirits" are is responsible for gynecological problems, miscarriages, and impotence.
"Many women," she claimed in a sermon, "suffer from astral sex regularly. Astral sex is the ability to project one's spirit man into the victim's body and have intercourse with it."
According to the Texas Medical Board database, Immanuel received her medical degree from a university in Nigeria in 1990 and practices medicine at a clinic in Houston. On her Facebook page, Immanuel says she was born in Cameroon and describes herself as "God's battle axe and weapon of war."
Immanuel did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. Her previous remarks were first reported Tuesday by The Daily Beast.
After the video featuring Immanuel's false claims about coronavirus cures was removed from Twitter, the platform restricted Donald Trump Jr.'s ability to tweet over his posting of a copy of the video, calling it a "must watch," a Twitter spokesperson told CNN.
Immanuel also responded, tweeting that Facebook's computers would "start crashing" if it didn't restore video clips of her speaking.
"Hello Facebook put back my profile page and videos up or your computers with start crashing till you do," she tweeted. "You are not bigger that God. I promise you. If my page is not back up face book will be down in Jesus name."
As of Monday, the virus has caused nearly 150,000 US deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University, and is on track to become a leading cause of death in the country.

Nairaland / General / Nigerians Are Taking Over Our Economy, Kenyan Professor Says As Access Bank Buys by Wells98(m): 3:59pm On Jul 25, 2020
Iraki was reacting to the recent sale of Kenya's Transnational Bank to Access Bank of Nigeria, noting that Access was not the first Nigerian bank to get a foothold in Kenya.
XN Iraki, an Associate Professor at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, has expressed concerns over Nigeria's growing influence on the Kenyan economy.

Professor Iraki, in an article titled, 'Nigerians Are Not Coming, They've Already Arrived,' published in The Standard, raised the alarm over the influence of Nigerian churches, movies and banks in the country.

He said the entry of Nigerian lenders into the Kenyan market was well planned.
Iraki was reacting to the recent sale of Kenya's Transnational Bank to Access Bank of Nigeria, noting that Access was not the first Nigerian bank to get a foothold in Kenya.

"Guaranty Trust (GT) and UBA already have a presence here," he says. The professor also said many Nigerians marrying Kenyan women was another grand strategy to get into the country's market.

The article partly read, "Why is the buyout so significant to the banking sector and the Kenyan economy? Why didn't we notice it? Is that the last Nigerian purchase? First, the entry of Nigerian lenders into the Kenyan

market was well planned. It started by softening the Kenyan mind with Nigerian churches and Afrosinema movies. That changed the hardened image of Nigerians as corrupt and happy-go-lucky—an outdated image.

"From my interactions, Nigerians are serious and focused. That focus and single-mindedness are often mistaken for pride and arrogance. Once they set their goals on something, they usually get it. The means can be contested, excluding juju. For every Nigerian caught on the wrong side of the law, nine others are doing the right thing, not just in their country, but somewhere in the world. One of them supervised my dissertation.

"I recently met a Nigerian who was a member of parliament in South Africa. In America, they are top administrators in universities, medical doctors, engineers, financial analysts and other lucrative jobs. It has been predicted that Nigeria will soon be Africa's superpower. And why not? The country has gone through thick and thin, from coups and anti-coups and even a civil war, like the other superpower - USA."

"For the Nigerians, marrying our girls seems to be part of their grand strategy to get into the Kenyan market; through genes, across generations. What else will Nigerians go for after our banks? Are banks their Trojan horse into our economy? And, more curiously, why is Kenya on sale? Not that I am an economic nationalist, but what are we buying ourselves?

"Some observers argue that lack of buffer communities like Indians and whites may have worsened the ethnic contest among the big Nigerian ethnic groups, and lately minorities. I need to make a fact-finding visit to Nigeria after Covid-19.

"The other prerequisite for Nigerian superpower status includes a significant population (read market) and an educated elite that has footprints in almost all the countries in the world. Oil did not prove a reliable conveyor belt to economic growth; all eggs were put in one basket. With Covid-19, the oil curse seems real.

"The best conveyor to Nigerian superpower status is financial services. Oil needs a countervailing force. By making their banks global, Nigerians - like the British and Americans before them - will leverage onto other sectors. They can control industries, institutions, sectors - and politics indirectly. I am sure you will not see an American, Briton or Nigerian as a cashier in a bank. But who decides how the profits will be shared?

"Access Bank's entry into the Kenyan market is more than the acquisition of a lender connected with former political power wielders. It is likely to disrupt the banking industry further. The demand for more bank capitalisation by the Central Bank of Kenya and investment in fintech were the first disruptors. We can't discount Covid-19 for now.

"Remember Access Bank is more capitalised, to the tune of about $18 billion (Sh1.9 trillion). The bank spans three continents, 12 countries and has 36 million customers. Compare that with Kenya's biggest bank by capitalisation or customers. How will local banks compete with such a big bank? Some could take solace in the fact that the biggest banks in Kenya are indigenous, such as KCB and Equity. Others are merging, including NIC and CBA. But we can't rest on our laurels."
Nairaland / General / COVID-19: Madagascar Re-imposes Lockdown Over Rise In Cases by Wells98(m): 9:33am On Jul 10, 2020
A new surge in coronavirus infections in Madagascar's capital, Antananarivo, has prompted the country to place the capital city under a fresh lockdown.

The presidency in a statement on Sunday, July 5, stated that the region is returning to full lockdown, CGTN reported.

As part of the lockdown measures, the presidency said no traffic will be allowed in or out of the region until July 20 and that the city will be placed under curfew.

The statement from the presidency further stated that only one person per household will be allowed to go out into the street between 6am and 12pm.

The authorities stated that the measures were taken because of the spread and increase of COVID-19 cases.

The latest rise of COVID-19 cases Madagascar may come as a surprise due to the fact that the country has claimed that its local herbal remedy called COVID-19tonic could cure the disease.

Nairaland / General / Update: FG Suspends Reopening Of Schools, Students Won't Write 2020 Exams by Wells98(m): 8:26am On Jul 09, 2020
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said that WAEC should suspend exams.
The Federal Government has just announced that schools under its control will not be reopening for the forthcoming West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams.
This was disclosed in a tweet post by the aide to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi from his official Twitter handle on Wednesday, July 8, 2020.
According to Ogunlesi, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, said that WAEC should suspend exams and also urges State Governments to toe the line of the Federal Government as this is not the right time to reopen.
According to the tweet post, ‘’Minister of Education has just announced that schools under control of the Federal Government will not be reopening for the forthcoming WAEC exams. Says WAEC should suspend exams and urges State Governments to toe Federal Government line. This is not the right time to reopen,’’
Adamu, while addressing state house correspondents after the virtual Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, said that none of the schools under the control of his ministry will resume until schools are considered safe enough
The Minister appealed to the State Governments that have already announced the resumption of schools to reconsider that as it is not safe and the students should be protected. He said that he would prefer that students lose an academic year than expose them to dangers.
He also debunked an earlier report that claimed that the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, announced that schools will be resuming on August 4, 2020. Adamu said that the Minister of State must have been misquoted as the schools under the supervision of the ministry will not be opening on August 4 or anytime soon.
Going further, Adamu pointed out that WAEC will not determine what Nigeria will do as he will rather have the country lose a school year than exposing the students to danger.

Nairaland / General / Niger Delta Militants Give FG 14 Days Ultimatum To Sack Akpabio by Wells98(m): 5:50pm On Jun 18, 2020
Demands for Akpabio’s sack
By Chioma Onuegbu – Uyo
Akwa Ibom ex-militant group on the platform of Niger Delta Volunteers, NDV, has given the federal government 14days to meet its demands, failure of which it would have no option than to shut down all oil operations in the State.
The group in a statement signed self- styled General Ekpo Ekpo and Capt. Nsidibe Etim , made available to newsmen yesterday in Uyo, said they would no longer keep silent while greedy politicians continue to vandalise the resources of the Niger Delta region at the expense of the suffering masses.
The ex-militant group listed some of the demands to include the immediate dissolution of the Interim Management Commission, IMC, of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and a substantive board reconstituted to run the affairs of the commission.
They also demanded the sack of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs for alleged misconduct and abuse of office and expressed the anger that most Akwa Ibom ex-militants were excluded from the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) because when Akpabio was a governor he had told the Amnesty Office that there were no ex-militants from the State.
The statement reads in part, “The Niger Delta Volunteers can no longer keep silent, while a few money-hungry politicians, continue to vandalise the resources of the Niger Delta region at the expense of the suffering masses.
The ex-militant group equally condemned the recent redeployment and compulsory retirement/leave of some key management staff of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

HUAWEI BEATS SAMSUNG TO BECOME WORLD’S LARGEST SMARTPHONE MAKER
Huzefa BalochHUZEFA BALOCHJUNE 15, 2020
‌‌‌‌‌‌
Huawei is blacklisted by the US as a result Huawei won’t be able to sell nor partner up with US companies. And since Google is a US-based company, Huawei can’t use Google services. Due to that, Huawei is shipping its latest smartphones without Google services, meaning no Play Store, Play Services, etc. But even the US ban can’t take Huawei hopes down. Earlier, the CEO of Huawei said “‘We Can Survive Without the U.S”. And now, Huawei becomes World’s Largest Smartphone Maker, which proves his statement.

According to Counterpoint Research, Huawei is now the world’s largest smartphone maker and has put Samsung in the shade. Counterpoint Research in talks with Gizmochina says that Huawei captured 19% market share whereas Samsung was able to grab only 17% in the same period. This report is for April 2020, but one question which comes to mind is:

How come Huawei is doing so well even after the US ban?
No GMS required in China
Patriotism
Obviously, the product
Pandemic
Well, the answer is simple. Huawei is a Chinese based company, where Google services are already banned. As a result, Chinese consumers have no issues using devices without Google. Secondly, since the US has banned the Chinese tech giant its obvious that Chinese consumers will show their patriotism buying more Huawei devices. Last but the main point is the products. Huawei has not just become the largest smartphone maker by patriotism, but also their excellent products.

Nairaland / General / Deontay Wilder Vs Dillian Whyte Clash Opens Up Following Fury Vs AJ Deal by Wells98(m): 10:44am On Jun 12, 2020
A WBC interim heavyweight title clash between Deontay Wilder and Dillian Whyte has opened up following an agreement between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Wilder and Whyte, linked to a fight for some time, could now clash in 2021 following a two-fight deal between Fury and AJ.

It all depends on how the Fury vs Wilder trilogy goes down later this year. And once the current pandemic conditions allow fans back into arenas.

Should Fury defeat Wilder for the second time, potentially in December, that puts Joshua firmly in the frame for a summer blockbuster undisputed unification.

But where does that leave Wilder? – Well, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ has a high standing with the WBC. He’ll certainly be able to lobby for an immediate shot at the interim title.

That is currently held by Whyte. This means Wilder vs Whyte could be ordered by the World Boxing Council whilst Fury vs Joshua plays out.

The winner of Wilder vs Whyte would then become the new mandate for the eventual victor who emerges undisputed from the Fury vs Joshua saga.
Judging by Whyte’s recent comments on Wilder, any battle would spark instant interest from the fans.
In an interview with Sirius XM on a yet-to-be-released edition of ‘The AK and Barak Show’ handed to WBN, Whyte didn’t hold back on the American.
He compared Wilder to a well-known cartoon character following his farcical ring entrance against Fury last February.

DEONTAY WILDER SUIT
“Look at it this way, have you watched ninja turtles before? Do you know Shredder? – He fought Splinter and the four turtles and they defeated him. He was in the same costume as Deontay Wilder and he didn’t complain,” pointed out Whyte.
“How can he (Deontay Wilder) be over 200 pounds and complaining about his outfit? When I fought Rivas it was over 50 pounds and my legs didn’t feel tired when I went to the ring.
“I have been known to wear heavy costumes with Swarovski crystals in so it’s all rubbish.
“I saw in an interview he said I train in a 50-pound weight vest so that when I fight bigger guys it won’t affect me. “There are videos of him running around with a 40, 50-pound weight vest on.”
To get himself back into contention, Deontay Wilder may even be willing to face Whyte on UK soil.
