According to multiple report reaching Rivers Mirror, SP Nnamdi celebrated his birthday on Sunday and was to celebrate with officers in his division today. Adequate arrangement have put in place with food, drinks, cake and what have you provided for to celebrate the Ndele born gallant officer. Officers and other invited guests waited for his arrival all to no avail only for them to discover that he has since passed on to glory in his residence. Nairaland / General / Supreme Court Upholds Students’ Rights To Wear Hijab To Lagos Schools by Weneda(m): 5:49pm On Jun 17, 2022 |
The Supreme Court on Friday gave approval to female Muslim students to wear hijab to school in Lagos State. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that five out of the seven members of the court’s panel which sat on the case ruled in favour of hijab while the two remaining members dissented. The majority decision affirmed the earlier Court of Appeal’s decision which restored the use of hijab by female Muslim students in Lagos State. The case involved the Lagos State Government as the appellant and Asiyat AbdulKareem (through her father), Moriam Oyeniyi, and the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria as the respondents. Judge Grace Onyeabo of the Lagos State High Court had in a judgement, on October 17, 2014, upheld the state government’s decision to ban the use of hijab in public primary and secondary schools in the state. But the High Court’s decision was upturned by the Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal in a judgement delivered on July 21, 2016. In a unanimous judgement, the appeal court panel ruled that the ban on the use of hijab in public schools in the state was discriminatory against Muslim pupils. Displeased with the judgement, the Lagos State government attempted to obtain a stay of execution of the Court of Appeal’s decision but failed. In February 2017, it appealed against the July 21, 2016 judgement of the Court of Appeal. Lagos State government became the appellant in the suit marked SC/910/16. Delivering judgement in the case on Friday, five members of the seven-member bench affirmed the Court of Appeal’s decision. It dismissed the appeal challenging the Court of Appeal’s decision as lacking in merit. The Supreme Court’s majority lead decision was prepared by Kudirat Kekere-Ekun but was read on her behalf by another member of the panel, Tijjani Abubakar. Other members of the panel are Olukayode Ariwoola, John Okoro, Uwani Baba-Aji, Mohammed Garba, and Emmanuel Agim. The Court of Appeal had ruled that the hijab ban violated the students’ rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, the dignity of human persons and freedom from discrimination guaranteed by the Nigerian A.B Gumel, who delivered the lead judgement of the Court of Appeal panel, held that wearing the hijab was an Islamic injunction and an act of worship required of Muslims. He said the use of hijab by Muslim pupils could not cause disunity, distraction and discrimination against students of other faiths as declared by the lower court judge. Lawyer speaks Commenting on the judgement on his Facebook page on Friday, Ahmad Adetola-Kazeem, a lawyer in the pro-hijab legal team, noted that the Supreme Court’s decision is applicable in all the states in Nigeria. “Supreme Court of Nigeria rules in favour of Hijab for Secondary School Students in Lagos State and by extension all states of the country. Re: SC/910/16- Lagos State Govt. and Ors V. Asiyat AbdulKareem,” the lawyer, whose father, the late Gani Adetola-Kaseem, was leading the legal team, stated. “May Allah reward Alh. Gani Adetola-Kaseem, SAN who led the team of lawyers in this case and also signed and filed the brief of argument few weeks before his death, May He reward everyone who contributed to the success of the case abundantly,” he added. Muslim group hails verdict A Muslim rights advocacy group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has hailed the judgement of the Supreme Court. MURIC, in its statement signed by its director, Ishaq Akintola, a professor, said: “This is the moment of truth. Divine truth has overwhelmed social truth.” He added: “ No matter how long, truth will prevail in the end. MURIC hails this judgement. We salute the courage of the honourable justices who stood by the sanctity of the Constitution and the inviolability of our font et origo.” He said the pronouncement had infused hope in the Nigerian judiciary. “The justices have refused to be swayed by religious sentiment. They stuck to the facts of the case and relied on the supremacy of the Nigerian Constitution. This is evident in the constitution of the panel: only three of them are Muslims while the remaining four are Christians. Yet five of them were in favour,” he stated. ‘Implement judgement immediately’ He called on the Lagos State government “to immediately implement the letter and spirit of this judgement” by issuing “a circular on the approval of hijab in all its public schools without any delay.” He said MURIC had earlier demanded the issuance of this circular but the Lagos State government “ignored our demand to date”. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/537539-supreme-court-upholds-students-rights-to-wear-hijab-to-lagos-schools.html |
Politics / INEC Registers 71,627 In Ongoing CVR In Enugu As At May 31 – REC by Weneda(m): 5:35pm On Jun 17, 2022 |
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has registered 71,627 eligible voters in the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) in Enugu State as at May 31, 2022. The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, Dr Emeka Ononamadu, disclosed this in a news briefing on the ongoing CVR in the state on Friday. Ononamadu, who admitted that the registration in the state had been low, however, said that since June 1 the registration rate had skyrocketed to close to 10,000 fresh registrants per week in the state. According to him, first of all, we commend the citizenry that finally woke up and are expressing their trust in INEC systems by showing their interest to vote. He said: “At one end there is expression of trust after the signing of the amended Electoral Act in which INEC joined Nigerians to advocate for major electoral law reforms. “And at another end, citizens expressed new trust from their observation of seriousness with which many political parties attempted to adhere to the new provisions of the amended electoral Act during their congresses and primaries, believing that such discipline and seriousness will be extended into the 2023 General Election. “No matter what is responsible for the surge of prospective voters, it is a positive sign for Nigeria and the Commission. Therefore, INEC will not relent in registering every eligible citizen within time. “There is no need for panic that some eligible voters will be excluded. INEC practices inclusivity that is one of the reasons why new polling units will be created to ensure more voters’ access to units to address low percentage of voters during elections. “I am calling on citizens to always be abreast with the electoral law as well as INEC guidelines and policies while sustaining their interest in the electoral system.” The REC noted that barely nine days to the deadline set by INEC for the stoppage of the CVR, the state headquarters of INEC in Enugu had been flooded with a series of requests for extension of the exercise. Ononamadu said: “We have forwarded those requests to the Commission and they are being reviewed. ”Meanwhile in the remaining nine days, we have set out strategies to ensure that eligible registrants who put themselves forward will be registered. “We are going to expand the update Centres by more than 34, and reallocate registration machines from places of low registrants’ turnout to areas with higher upsurge. “We have within the period worked till 7pm against the 5pm closing time. We have also improved on publishing the CVR centres to avoid many registrants crowding around one or two major registration centres.” https://politicsnigeria.com/inec-registers-71627-in-ongoing-cvr-in-enugu-as-at-may-31-rec/ |

Religion / Why Do Some Prophets Use Coconut For Deliverance by Weneda(m): 11:23am On Jun 12, 2022 |
Sometimes it baffles me why some prophets use coconut for deliverance. When i go round some streets i see broken coconuts littered everywhere mostly the eve of a new year. Even the price of coconut is a bit high because of them, some sell it in the church during their deliverance. I ask, are they not contradicting the bible because no verses in the bible recorded Jesus using coconut for healing. My fellow christians I need answers concerning this issue. |
Politics / I Already Have My Running Mate – Tinubu by Weneda(m): 10:52am On Jun 10, 2022 |
All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidate and former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu hints of picking his running mate barely 24 hours after winning his party’s primary election in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Tinubu was speaking on Thursday night after a “Thank You” visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa Abuja. The presidential candidate was accompanied on the visit to President Buhari by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Wale Tinubu. When asked by State House correspondents of the choice of his running mate he said “I won’t tell you that. That is my right, it’s in my pocket book”. Speaking after the meeting with President Buhari, Tinubu commended him for providing a level playing field for the process of selecting the party’s presidential candidate, recalling that he had promised many times that he would support the democratic process and he had proven that with the party’s presidential primary, which he won. “He promised the whole country and the world that he will build a legacy of transparency and consistency. Legacy of au level playing ground for all the aspirants. He will be committed to democratic principles and values and he did so. “He didn’t endorse anybody, he didn’t impose anybody, he did not, at any time, attempt to tinker with the process of this election to favour one tribe or the other. He was steadfast, he was trust worthy, he was dependable, he was a leader, “If he had to give it to anybody yesterday, it’s not my victory that is important, it’s the process and the management of that election that gave it to President Muhammadu Buhari” he said. Asked what his selling point would be on the campaign for the 2023 election, he said “That I’m brilliant, I am experienced, from the private sector, to public sector and ready to hit the ground running same day and not mess up the legacy of progress and honesty that is left behind for me and handed over to me by President Muhammadu Buhari. “All APC family members should celebrate in a limited manner, we just begin the hard work ahead to win the victory for our party is a hard one and we will win”, he said. Celebrities / Cyber Fraud: Forensic Investigations Indict Naira Marley by Weneda(m): 10:42am On Jun 10, 2022 |
The Cybercrime Section of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Thursday, submitted reports of forensic investigations led by Whyte Dein to corroborate their case against singer Azeez Fashola a.k.a Naira Marley, charged with credit card fraud before the Ikoyi Federal High Court. Dein, the Chief Detective Officer of the Section told the court that his team’s investigations revealed that the defendant was involved in credit card fraud. The artiste faced 11 charges bordering on alleged credit card fraud contrary to Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act and the Cyber Crimes Act. It was gathered that the singer committed these offenses between November 26 and December 11, 2018, and May 10, 2018. He was arraigned on May 20, 2019, but was granted bail. At the resumed trial on Thursday, Dein, led in evidence by EFCC counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, told Justice Nicholas Oweibo that they discovered conversations on the defendant’s iPhone with one Raze who asked for a credit card details. He said, “One of our findings from the forensic report shows the exchange of chat messages with several persons when the defendant sent credit card details, including card numbers and expiration dates. Visa card details were one of those sent by the defendant to a certain person known on his contact list as Raze. This message sent Visa Card details to Raze, after which Raze replied that the card was not valid.” “We were able to establish through investigation the previous messages he sent with a wrong card that was indeed not valid. We then repeated the same process a second time which was now valid.” Dein also explained that the singer used a multi-lingual browser to access illegal networks. He said: “The defendant used malicious tools to disguise the identity and location of the user of the laptop when connected to the internet along with the presence of the Top Browser which acted as a single gateway to the dark net. This gave us a reasonable ground to suspect that the defendant had been engaging in fraudulent card activities. And this was established through a reply to our request to Visa Western Union Card.” “The types of sites most commonly associated with the dark web are marketplaces where illicit goods such as narcotics, firearms, and stolen credit card numbers are bought and sold. The darkest corners are used to hire hitmen, engage in human trafficking, and exchange child pornography.” Another forensics expert, Buru Buhari had on October 3, 2019 during the proceedings, told the court that his investigations revealed stolen card details issued by European, American, and Latin American banks from the singer’s laptop. Dein concluded by saying the investigations pointed out the defendant’s involvement in cyber fraud. However, the defense counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, objected and said only the court could conclude. The case was adjourned till July 13 for ruling on the points raised, and July 15 for continuation of trial. https://punchng.com/cyber-fraud-forensic-investigations-indict-naira-marley/ |
