Financial Pact Summit -President Tinubu’s Policies Spark Global Interest

World leaders eagerly seek meetings with President Bola Tinubu at the Global Financial Pact Summit, expressing interest in his administration’s recent policies. At least four foreign leaders, including France, the United States, and Switzerland, have requested meetings with President Tinubu in Paris, where he will participate in the summit organized by President Emmanuel Macron.

Dele Alake, Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communication, and Strategy, shared insights on the summit’s significance. He highlighted President Tinubu’s intention to network with international finance corporations, institutions, and economically stable countries to attract foreign investment to Nigeria.

President Tinubu’s recent bold steps, particularly the unification of multiple exchange rates, have yielded positive effects on the economy and social engineering. However, there may be a slight spike in demand, affecting the value of the Naira against the dollar in the short term.

To stabilize the value of the Naira and reinforce market forces, direct foreign exchange injection into the economy becomes essential. The liberalization of domiciliary account restrictions encourages confidence in Nigeria’s foreign exchange system, prompting people abroad to invest in the country. Moreover, the elimination of restrictions motivates locals to bring their dollars into the financial system....

Politics / Amazon Confirms No Presidential Election Technical Glitch On February 25 by Whatshappening: 9:14am On Jun 20, 2023
https://kilonshele.com/amazon-no-presidential-election-technical-glitch/

In a recent development at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in Abuja, Amazon Web Services Incorporated appeared as a witness to provide testimony regarding the general elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had enlisted Amazon’s technical support during the elections, and the company’s representative, Mpeh Clarita Ogar, took the stand as the seventh witness on behalf of the Labour Party and their candidate, Mr. Peter Obi. Their petition sought to invalidate the election victory of President Bola Tinubu from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Contradicting INEC’s claims, Ogar stated under oath that there were no technical glitches recorded in the country on February 25, the day of the presidential election. INEC had previously attributed its inability to transmit real-time election results to its viewing portal using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation (BVAS) machines to technical glitches experienced on that day. However, Ogar, a cloud engineer and architect, presented six volumes of reports from various regions worldwide where Amazon Web Services hosts its servers. These regions included North America, South America, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Europe.

Ogar affirmed that no technical glitches occurred across all six continents hosting AWS cloud services on February 25, 2023. Along with her witness statement and curriculum vitae, she submitted her appointment letter as evidence before the court. Despite opposition from all respondents, a five-member panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani admitted all the documents as exhibits in the case.

The respondents named in the petition, marked as CA/PEPC/03/2023, are INEC, President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the APC. The court adjourned........

Crime / Nigeria Air Fraud- Buhari And Others Accused by Whatshappening: 1:49pm On Jun 09, 2023
https://kilonshele.com/nigeria-air-fraud-buhari-and-others-accused/

A civil society organization, the Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network (CHRAN), is urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the alleged fraudulent launch of Nigeria Air and hold former President Muhammadu Buhari accountable.

CHRAN is also calling for the immediate arrest and investigation of the former Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, and all individuals implicated in the scam to face legal consequences if found guilty.

In a statement released by CHRAN Chairman, Otuekong Franklyn Isong, and Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Comrade Vincent Aluu, the organization expressed its concerns about the criminal nature of the launch, which occurred on the final day of Buhari’s presidency, and described it as an attempt to defraud the people.

According to the statement, on May 26, 2023, Nigerians woke up to the news of the launch of a new national carrier, Nigeria Air, with an Ethiopian Air registration number.

CHRAN highlights that within 24 hours of the alleged launch, the airline was observed among the Ethiopian Air fleet, based on the confession of Nigeria Air’s acting Managing Director, Captain Dapo Olumide, and the findings of the Aviation Committee in the House of Representatives.

The organization is shocked by the revelation that the launched airline was rented from Ethiopian Air for public display and that the entire endeavor reportedly cost over N140 billion without any tangible results......

Politics / Catholic Church Urges Tinubu And Sani To Act Against El-rufai’s P Remarks by Whatshappening: 10:24am On Jun 09, 2023
https://kilonshele.com/catholic-church-urges-tinubu-and-sani-to-act-against-el-rufais-provocative-remarks/

The Catholic Church in Kaduna State has reached out to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, urging them to intervene and address the recent inflammatory religious comments made by the former governor, Nasir El-Rufai. The church fears that if left unaddressed, these remarks could escalate into a nationwide religious crisis.

El-Rufai’s controversial statement, which focused on Muslim dominance in Kaduna State’s governance, has gained significant attention. In a video circulating online, the former governor can be heard stating in the local Hausa language that most Christians in the state did not support his party during the elections, resulting in their exclusion from key positions, including the Deputy Governor role.

Moreover, El-Rufai expressed confidence that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could win elections in both Kaduna State and the nation without the support of the Christian community......

Health / Bleeding After Sex Could Be An Early Sign Of Cervical Cancer-prof. Isaac Adewole by Whatshappening: 2:52pm On Jun 08, 2023
https://kilonshele.com/bleeding-after-sex-could-be-an-early-sign-of-cervical-cancer/

According to Professor Isaac Adewole, a former health minister and co-founder of the African Cancer Coalition, it is crucial to recognize that persistent bleeding, particularly during or immediately after sexual intercourse, may indicate the presence of cervical cancer.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, Prof. Adewole emphasized that cervical cancer can be prevented and effectively treated if detected early.

Cervical cancer remains the second most prevalent cancer among women in Nigeria and the fourth most common worldwide, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This form of cancer predominantly affects women between the ages of 15 and 44, claiming the lives of 7,900 Nigerian women annually out of the reported 12,000 cases.

Prof. Adewole revealed, “The main challenge in Nigeria, as well as in many developing countries across Africa, is the lack of awareness surrounding cervical cancer. As a result, when women finally seek medical attention, they are usually in the advanced stages of the disease.”

He further explained that the early symptoms, such as bleeding during or after sexual intercourse, often go unnoticed by women. Instead of seeking proper medical care, some women mistakenly attribute the bleeding to their partners, assuming it is caused by trauma or injury.

“Unfortunately, when women distance themselves from their partners, the bleeding stops, but the disease continues to progress silently,” Prof. Adewole cautioned. “By the time they experience a resurgence of symptoms, the cancer has already advanced significantly.”.....

Foreign Affairs / US President Joe Biden Stumbles At Colorado Event by Whatshappening: 10:47pm On Jun 01, 2023
https://kilonshele.com/us-president-joe-biden-stumbles-at-colorado-event/
US President Joe Biden faced an embarrassing moment as he tripped and fell while distributing diplomas at the graduation ceremony of the US Air Force Academy in Colorado. Despite being the oldest serving president at 80, Mr. Biden managed to regain his footing with the assistance of Air Force officials and returned to his seat unaided.

During the ceremony, which lasted approximately one and a half hours, the president stood to greet each of the 921 graduating cadets. However, a mishap occurred when he stumbled upon a black sandbag placed on the stage. Footage of the incident captured Mr. Biden pointing at the sandbag as he recovered.

Fortunately, the president did not sustain any visible injuries and was seen jogging back to his motorcade after the ceremony concluded. The White House communications director, Ben LaBolt, took to Twitter to assure the public that Mr. Biden was “fine.” Similarly, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the president was “totally fine” and exhibited a “big smile” while boarding the plane.

Nonetheless, this incident has further fueled concerns about Mr. Biden’s age and his ability to serve a second term as president. Recent polls indicate that a majority of US voters express worries about his advanced age, considering that he would be 82 at the beginning of a potential second term.

Former President Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner for the 2024 White House election, commented on the incident during a campaign event in Iowa. Mr. Trump, who has frequently mocked Mr. Biden’s age, expressed his hope that the president had not been injured. He added that the incident was not inspiring, drawing attention to his own cautious descent from a stage in 2020, which had also garnered media coverage.....

Politics / Just In: CBN Devalues Naira To 630/$1 by Whatshappening: 12:06pm On Jun 01, 2023
https://kilonshele.com/just-in-cbn-devalues-naira-to-630-1/

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has taken a significant step by devaluing the Naira to 630/$1, a change from the previous rate of N461.6 at the Importers and Exporters (I&E) window. This move comes shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s announcement of the government’s plans to unify the country’s exchange rate, with the aim of stimulating the economy. The devaluation is expected to redirect funds from arbitrage towards meaningful investments in the real economy.

The wide margin between the I&E window and the parallel market has been a concern, as it has encouraged round-tripping with Bureau de Change operators. To address this issue, the CBN has implemented various measures, including a complete halt in the sale of forex to BDCs. In line with this, President Tinubu held meetings with strategic institutions, including CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele, to discuss exchange rate matters.

At the recent weekly bidding for foreign exchange, the CBN sold the spot rate to banks on behalf of their customers at the new rate of N631 to a dollar, and most bidders received the full amount they requested. Consequently, prices at the parallel market have started to decrease. In Abuja and Kano, for instance, prices dropped from N750 to N745 per dollar.

The naira’s value in the parallel market has reached its lowest point in a year, driven by expectations of a potential change in exchange rate management under the new administration. Umar Salisu, a BDC operator, reported that the naira dropped to N762 per dollar, compared to N775 the previous day.....

Politics / Subsidy Removal: Why Petrol Price Can’t Be Less Than N500/litre – Oil Marketers by Whatshappening: 11:30am On Jun 01, 2023
Zarama Mustapha, the Deputy President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), shed light on the factors influencing the new pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) in Nigeria. Mustapha emphasized that the Nigerian National Petrol Company (NNPC) Limited, as the sole importer of petrol, determines the price for oil marketers across the country. He explained that the current retail price of petrol, set by the NNPC, cannot be less than N500 per litre.

To arrive at this price, oil marketers will procure petrol at over N460 per litre from fuel depots. They will then factor in transportation costs and profit margins, which collectively contribute to the final pump price exceeding N500 per litre. Consequently, since the recent adjustment of petrol prices and the removal of subsidies, the selling price of a litre of petrol has already surpassed N500 nationwide. This, in turn, has led to long queues at filling stations and a significant increase in transportation costs, exacerbating the country's traffic situation.

Mustapha further elaborated on the role of the NNPC and its influence on market dynamics. He expressed his belief that the deregulation of the petroleum sector is a recent development and expressed hope that other players would eventually be allowed to participate in product importation, fostering healthy competition with the NNPC. Despite the deregulation, Mustapha asserted that the NNPC is still government-owned, thus retaining a significant influence over the industry.

The removal of subsidy on petrol was announced by President Bola Tinubu during his inaugural speech at the Eagle Square in Abuja on May 29. Tinubu explained that the previous administration, led by Muhammadu Buhari, did not allocate funds for subsidies beyond June in the 2023 budget. Although many Nigerians anticipated the implementation of the new price regime by July 1, the queues at filling stations and retail outlets' hoarding of petrol, along with price hikes, emerged almost immediately after the presidential pronouncement.

Responding to the NNPC's price adjustment, Mustapha expressed surprise at the early implementation and lack of official communication regarding depot prices for independent marketers....

Politics / Drug Offenses Allegations Against President Bola Tinubu Admitted by Whatshappening: 6:58pm On May 30, 2023
The Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja has made a significant development in the case filed by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, challenging the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the 25 February election. In a recent hearing, the court admitted crucial documents as evidence, accusing President Tinubu of drug offenses in the United States. These exhibits include court documents from the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, which purportedly awarded a $460,000 fine against Mr. Tinubu for illicit drug trafficking.

Although President Tinubu was sworn in as Nigeria’s president on Monday, the court will not decide on the cases challenging his election until September. The admission of these documents as evidence signifies a critical step in the legal proceedings and adds weight to Mr. Obi’s allegations of widespread irregularities and President Tinubu’s ineligibility to contest the election.

During the hearing, Jibrin Okutepa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and Mr. Obi’s lawyer, tendered the court documents, highlighting the fine imposed on President Tinubu for drug trafficking. Additionally, Mr. Okutepa presented documents supporting Mr. Obi’s claim of double nomination against the vice president, Kashim Shettima.

Following the admission of the documents as evidence, Mr. Okutepa called Lawrence Nwakaeti as the first witness for Mr. Obi. Mr. Nwakaeti, a lawyer, testified that he had voted during the presidential election on February 25 at his polling unit in Umuezeala Village Square, Ihiala, Anambra State. He asserted that President Tinubu had been fined in the US for involvement in narcotics trafficking.......
