How much?

Not fixed. Depends on the sales performance of the audiobooks produced off your contributions. But once you are among the top 100 contributors to a book, the amount you can earn is not capped.

Please visit wikiguage.com to find out more on how this works.

A great and exciting time for African languages!

On the 8th of February, 2018, the executive governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, signed the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Bill into law. This follows similar laws in other states like Imo and Anambra, for the Igbo language.

These are welcomed development, as the degree of language abandonment in Africa is alarming! Africans need to revive and champion the use of African languages beyond the streets and rural areas.

The widespread perception of African languages as those of the uncultured and illiterates is silly at best, and must be changed. The Yoruba and Edo languages, for instance, were the official languages of the great Oyo and Benin Empires respectively!

Some European languages that produce thousands of undergraduate and postgraduate candidates yearly are not up to the population of Ibadan alone.

At Wikiguage, we believe moves such as the ones in the states mentioned above, are in the right direction. So we are translating some popular children's classics into the Yoruba language to be distributed to Lagos kids. When an Italian or German or Georgian kid wants to read the popular classic "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", he/she does so in Italian or German or Georgian, despite the book originally published in English language. Yoruba or Zulu or Igbo kids should be able to do the same in their primary languages.

The translation is a collaborative project. The prototype of our website is up at http://wikiguage.com:8000 . Visit it and see what we are trying to achieve. The website will be fully available at wikiguage.com soon. But in the mean time, it is safe to contribute, as no such contribution will be lost.
