Crime / 6 Myths About Human Trafficking We All Need To Stop Believing by WOTCLEF(f): 7:40am On May 04, 2016 |
Myth 1: Human trafficking is synonymous with sex trafficking. Human trafficking — also known as trafficking in persons or modern slavery — is described by the U.S. State Department as the "act of recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing or obtaining a person for compelled labor or commercial sex acts through the use of force, fraud or coercion." But it's often used solely as a synonym for involuntary sex work — and sexual slavery isn't actually the biggest component of trafficking globally. About 22% of those trafficked are exploited for sexual labor. While that is deserving of our attention, 68% are trapped in forced labor, and they're often left out of the conversation. To get at the root of a human rights violation, it's important to accurately represent it. It's important to shed more light on the experiences of those living in forced labor (without diverting attention from sexual exploitation). Myth 2: There's a definitive face of human trafficking. We often think of trafficked persons as fitting a certain profile: a young girl from a low-income family, living in a poor country and forced into sex work. While an estimated 70% of those trafficked are women and girls, this description isn't entirely accurate. Trafficking happens in different contexts globally. It's also a problem for men and boys, especially when discussing the realities of forced labor. Sexual exploitation also affects homeless Nigerian youth populations, often at risk due to financial instability. At any given time, an estimated 21 million people around the world are trapped in the cycle of trafficking. Their stories often look very different. Myth 3: Human trafficking is only a problem in developing countries. Poor countries usually get the most attention when talking about human trafficking. But it happens around the globe — and yes, that includes Nigeria and others Though some countries — like India, which sees the highest rates of trafficking worldwide — are certainly more at risk, it's important to know that modern slavery doesn't only exist in low-income regions. In fact, our lives are deeply intertwined with the realities of human trafficking, even if we don’t notice it. Sexual exploitation isn't always visible in Western countries, but labor exploitation is easy to discover when we look at the products we use daily with a critical eye. Myth 4: Human trafficking always involves smuggling individuals across borders. Despite the term "trafficking," transportation isn't required — it refers to "compelled service," not necessarily border crossing. In fact, for those in forced labor and sexual slavery, trafficking often happens close to home. About 35% of those trafficked are exploited domestically, with 37% crossing borders within the same sub-region where they're from. Any form of exploitation that takes away a person’s agency with force, coercion or fraud can be considered trafficking, no matter the location. Myth 5: We should be most concerned about human trafficking during major sporting events. During major sporting events, like the Olympics, there's an uptick in law enforcement surveillance and mass social attention around human trafficking. Many argue hyper-masculine sporting environments breed more demand for sex-trafficked women and girls — but advocates disagree on whether that's entirely true. But, most of the time, women and girls aren't trafficked specifically for these events. Often, they've been in forced sex work long before massive crowds come to the area. Many advocates worry focusing attention disproportionately on specific mass sporting events detracts from an important reality: Sex trafficking isn’t isolated to one time of year or one location. Myth 6: Trafficked persons will try to seek help in public Research has found that trafficked individuals are often stuck in a cycle of self-blame and deep fear, making leaving the situation seemingly impossible. Traffickers often threaten violence against those they exploit and their loved ones if they seek help from authorities. Sometimes coercion runs so deep that those in forced labor and sex trafficking don’t identify as "victims." This, in turn, is a major piece of what makes human trafficking so overwhelming to tackle. source: http://wotclef.org.ng/article.aspx

Crime / Kobo Wise: The Diseconomies Of Child Labour by WOTCLEF(f): 6:42am On Apr 19, 2016 |
By S. O. Egwurube II FOR: http//:wotclef.org.ng The most profound statement from Mother Nature in my opinion is: “there is time for everything.” A child first learns to crawl, then stand, then takes his first step and in due time begins to run. A seed planted first decomposes, then begins to germinate, grows to maturity and begins to bear fruits, and in due season; harvest time. In the business world every product goes through what is called the product life cycle; every product is expected to go through five phases: development phase, introductory phase, growth phase, maturity phase and decline phase. The first three phases in every product requires huge investment and support in other to yield good return on investment at the fourth and fifth phase at which the product is self sufficient and requires little or no support. If a business does not support a product at the growth phase but rather, drastically cuts or stop investing in the product, chances is that the product’s sales will decline at the maturity stage or the product will completely fail leading to loss on investment in the long run. This simple analysis can be said and applied to the life of an individual. For the purpose of this analysis, let’s consider the time of conception to delivery as the development phase, age 0 to 7 introductory phase, age 8 to 21 growth phase, age 22 to 55 maturity phase and age 56 and above as decline phase. At the introduction phase a child like a product requires huge investment: care and attention at all times, good nutrition and protection in other to properly ascend to the next phase, at the growth phase a child gradually becomes less dependent and does not require full attention like in the previous phase. At this phase a child like a product begins to make little contributions to the family but still requires huge investment: school, clothing, feeding, physical, social and emotional support, protection etc. like analyzed above, if a business cuts investment and begins to maximize profit at this phase, there is a high risk of product failure and low return on investment in the long run. Same holds true with a child. When a child at this phase begins to labour to cater for the family rather than be in school to pursue self development, though it may seem kobo wise, his chances of succeeding in life becomes slimmer. As a result of losing competitive advantage, he will be bound to diminish in return in the long run. Emmanuel, a young violent energetic boy I ran into during an Easter holiday in Otukpo, Benue state, had in his report card for 2nd term in primary 1; 1st position out of a class of 52. This result he holds proudly and endears it to his heart as a mark of achievement. The result is quite impressive and shows great signs of prospects for Emmanuel, his family and Nigeria. Our shooting star Emmanuel was born to a young girl; Ijeoma who was barely 17 years as at the time of delivery. She conceived Emmanuel while in SS1 at Ewulo College, Otukpo and dropped out of school as a result of the pregnancy but eventually returned to complete her secondary education after 2 years. Ijeoma popularly known as “Mama Emma” lives with her mother Nkechi a petty trader who sells a locally baked snack known as “Agidi”. Nkechi uses the proceeds from the trade to cater for her daughter Ijeoma and Emmauel her grandson. At age Six, Emmanuel was introduced into the trade and immediately began street hawking in other to help increase sales and income of the family. Significantly, it was surprising to learn that Ijeoma does not partake in the sales or production of this merchandise; she sits at home while her six year old son hawks to raise funds to support the family. Ijeoma held that she stayed at home to take care of the house. Every day Emmanuel sets out early in the morning to hawk the merchandise which sold for five Naira (N5) each, his daily sales was within the range 500 to 700 Naira. Amidst the dangers posed to this young lad by engaging in street hawking at such a tender age, Emmanuel in other to make good sales travels an average of 30km daily on foot within the town of Otukpo, Benue State, Nigeria. At age 7 he was enrolled into Saint Peter primary school, Otukpo, in his words “that was the best time of my life” as he lets his head down in perhaps what can be regarded as a moment of swift contemplation. His grandma possibly had unconsciously done what is demanded at the growth phase of be it a product or human which in this case is investing in education. Soon enough the decision proved promising as Emmanuel came out 1st position in the class 52 in two consecutive terms in primary 1. These remarkable achievements was attained under most difficult circumstances as Emmanuel had to hawk before going to school, during break time in school and after school with little or no time to study. In response to my question; where you given time to play? He replied “I use to play when I sell all my “Agidi” and don’t go home immediately or sometimes I will just keep it one side and play with my friends.” In primary 2 our shining star Emmanuel begins to dim as he gradually succumbs to the pressure of combining school and street hawking to provide for the family. His performance deteriorates and before long he was expelled for theft while in primary 2 and just 8 years. This event saw the end of Emmanuel’s education. Emmanuel today is so battered and heated like a volcano waiting to erupt at the slightest irritation. His future seems bleak resulting in diseconomies for his mother, grandmother, immediate community and Nigeria. If this shining star was given the needed support and investment during his growth phase, he perhaps would have produced a high rate on return on investment. The decision to use children as an income generating tool in the long run is Kobo wise and Naira foolish because though the child is bringing in meager income, as in the case of Emmanuel, he will diminish in return in the long run losing competitive advantage among his peers.

Crime / Beast Of Burden - A Story Of Adidi The “house Help” by WOTCLEF(f): 3:51pm On Apr 18, 2016 |
In story books and other reference materials, most often than not, a donkey strapped with logs of load, transporting them to desired destinations of the master, or strapped with an agricultural machine tilling a farm for the master who in turn for services provided gives the donkey water depicted the phrase ‘beast of burden’. In our society today, especially in urban and suburban cities and towns, there are countless beasts of burden. A situation so prevalent, that it can pass for a culture. 10 years ago in Idundu, a small isolated village in Calabar Municipal Local Government Area of Cross River State, South South, Nigeria. Recollecting her last encounter with happiness, Abidi reminisced on how she used to play fun kids games with her friends, sing and dance, laugh and run freely in the rain. All that was brought to an abrupt end when at the age of six, an “aunty” from the city visited her father requesting for Adidi to accompany her to the city with flattering promises of sending her to school up to university level and other promises of good life for the young lad. Adidi’s father Mr. Udosen turned down the offer but later revisited his decision after several pressures from Adidi who felt her dream of being a doctor is slipping away; she managed to convince her mother who eventually joined her campaign and persuaded her husband to give the offer a go. Mr. Udosen reluctantly obliged. Now leaving in Nyanya, a suburban area in the FCT, Adidi wakes up earlier than the Devil; sweeps the compound and house, mops the floor tiles, washes the two cars owned by ‘Oga’ and ‘Madam’, prepares breakfast and the four kids for school (still running errands at intervals). Eventually, when all is settled and everyone leaves, she does the dishes and head to school most cases few minutes to ten. Mrs Ada, Adidi’s teacher, recounts her level of absentee as documented in the attendance register. She further stressed lateness and poor concentration during the few days Adidi turns up. She sought to inquire from Adidi why she has made herself the black sheep of the class, but “she wont give up a word” said the teacher. Adidi’s friend Yetunde averred that Adidi is always the last to school but run’s off before the closing bell giggles. Upon return to the horror her life has now become, Adidi hurries to make lunch before the kids return from school because failure to serve lunch upon return will mean a risk of missing school for at least a week after rounds of beating. She emphatically stated that her madam dishes a little soup and adds water to it before giving her. When asked if she gets to eat meat? She smiles in a sarcastic way and replies “I only eat the smell while stemming the meat or when I steal it”. Come night fall after returning from the day’s sale of sachet “pure water”, Adidi makes dinner; her ticket to the meal is a hundred percent sale. Done with the dishes and ironing of the kids uniform as the clock ticks to midnight her worst fear comes calling. Adidi has been sexually abused on many occasions by her “Oga” as she simply calls him, who after the gruesome act threatens to beat her and return her to the village or better still kill her. Adidi has been turned from a child into a beast of burden carrying logs of physical, psychological and emotional load of abuses. She only desires to complete her Senior Secondary education and laments her final submission with tears rolling down her tender eyes “if only I had listened to my father”. http://www.wotclef.org.ng/article.aspx
