The Federal Government has released N22.68 billion for the settlement of retirement benefits of former workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited (NAL). The other N20 billion is for the revitalization of public universities in line with demands of the Academic Staff of Universities (ASUU).
Newly appointed Finance Minister Hajia Zainab Ahmed, who broke the news yesterday to reporters in Abuja noted that the initial submission regarding the retirement benefits of ex-NAL workers in liquidation was N78 billion.

National Chairman of the ruling party, APC, Adams Oshiomole, says his party has learnt from the mistakes they made in 2015 by fielding opportunists who sued their platform just to pursue their selfist interest and not that of the party. Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has made his return to football by playing in a charity match in memory of Aldo Platini.

The match, which was also put on in an effort to raise money for sick children, took place in Nancy on Sunday afternoon.

According to Ezugwu, the sub-section 3 of the same section of the constitution says: “ If any other law is inconsistent with the provisions of this constitution, this constitution shall prevail, and that other law shall, to the extent of the inconsistency, be voided.”

“The legal action has become imperative as the provision of the Electoral Act, which was relied upon by the returning officer appears to be inconsistent with Section 179, subsection 2 and 3 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, thus, it is legally contentious as the Constitution is unambiguous on how to determine an electoral victory in a governorship election,” he added.

he Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a certificate of return to Dr Kayode Fayemi, the winner of the governorship election in Ekiti state.
The national commissioner of INEC, Solomon Soyebi, presented the certificate to the governor-elect on Wednesday, July 18, at the commission’s headquarters in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Dr Fayemi, 53, was the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a former minister of solid minerals development. Receiving the certificate, Fayemi commended INEC and the security agencies for a job well done, stating that serious governance has just started for him.

An anti-corruption advocacy group, Corruption, Not In My Country, has said there was widespread buying of votes during the Ekiti gubernatorial election held on July 14.
The group’s executive director, Akin Fadeyi, stated that the Ekiti poll has raised doubts about the forthcoming 2019 election.
He said there were reports that party agents of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) handed out cash to Ekiti electorates during the poll, The Cable reports.

Votes were sold for prices ranging between N3000 and N5000. The election that should produce a good leader in a state so endowed with intellectual human resources was blighted as it turned out to be a selection of the higher bidder,” the group said.

“The sad incident, well documented by international and local media are in video footages and prints and have become accessible to the whole world. This has placed us on the spotlight as the laughing stock of the global community and has indeed shown how uncommitted we are to advancing and deepening our democratic processes.

Governor of Lagos State, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode arrived Russia last night for the World Cup finals between France and Croatia, and one of highlights of his arrival was that he pledged to help send Nigerians stuck in the country home.

Recall that we brought you reports about how over 300 Nigerians are stranded in Russia.

Apparently, they came in to the country for the World Cup games, in hopes to find jobs in Moscow, but got disappointed.

Instagram user @iampndgreat who disclosed the promise made by Governor Ambode in his post, wrote; “Not a Political Campaign but just appreciating a good and kind gesture by one of our noble Politicians in Nigeria.

The story goes thus:

I had a pick up arrangement today at the airport in Moscow and had a rare privilege of meeting his excellency, the governor of Lagos State; the most populous and commercial Hub of Nigeria.

I quickly introduced myself while I waited for my pick up arrangement to come out. We had a small chat and exchanged knowledge and wisdom while I waited.

He bade me farewell as his pick up arrangement had arrived.

After a few minutes, my pick up arrived as well so we set out to the car park.

As soon as we came out of the airport, I saw a crowd of over 50 Nigerians who had been stranded at the airport for almost 10-15 days now.

And in their middle was this same man, His excellency , Governor Ambode. As soon as he sighted me, he quickly called my attention to assist.

It was a pathetic state and a lot of words both pleasant and unpleasant were being exchanged. (Not apportioning blames on anyone ).

Then his Excellency did something that amazed me. He showed solidarity and quickly pledged to send all 50 Stranded Nigerians home and assigned me to oversea the transfers and procurement of new tickets to send them home.

As I type this, 19 out of this 50 are already on air to Lagos Nigeria, the remaining 31 are leaving this evening.

This is following the decision of a magistrates’ court to remand the lawmaker in police custody for six weeks.
Ayodele told Concise News that Melaye’s lawyers would file fundamental rights enforcement at the Federal High Court, Lokoja, on Friday, challenging the court ruling.
The lawmaker spokesperson said the lawyers believed the decision to remand Melaye in police custody was flawed.

Senator Dino Melaye Admitted To Police Medical Center, Challenges Court Ruling

A Lokoja Magistrate Court has ordered that embattled Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial district be remanded in police custody for 38 days pending commencement of hearing in the case brought by the police against him and three others.

The charges the police brought against Senator Melaye bothered on criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, amongst others.

The Counsel to Senator Dino Melaye, Mike Ozekhome (SAN) argued for his bail which was opposed by the Police prosecuting Counsel, Alex Iziyon who insisted that that the offences preferred against the senator were ordinarily not bailable.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Suleiman Abdullahi denied the bail application and ordered that Melaye be be kept in police custody till June 11, 2018 when hearing in the case would commence.
