Food / Re: Vegetarianism by YawaDonGas: 9:44pm On Jul 10, 2009
I tried giving up meat for the whole period of lent one time,  it was haaaaaaaaaard. Now, just giving it up on Fridays of lent is hard. It seems that's the day someone always walks by with some meat-based dish.

I know I digress, but I have a question,  if you give up meat on Fridays of lent, and you go to a party with irresistable meat, you take the meat home to eat it at 12:01am later on,  did you really give up meat for the day?
Culture / Re: Did You Hawk Anything On The Streets As A Child ? by YawaDonGas: 8:44pm On Jul 10, 2009
Hmmm,  I never hawked, but I sold pekere, and later chinchin, in high school. Not coz I needed the money, but coz I wanted it. I stopped the pekere because green plantain was just too freaking hard to peel and made my nails green. I stopped the chinchin coz my mom made me realize that I wasn't making the profit I thot I was, seeing that I was using her oil, kerosine, e.t.c. I guess that was my first education on Net vs Gross profit.

To those who did it coz they needed to, kudos.
Education / Re: Nigerian Schools' Disciplinary System; How Effective Is It? by YawaDonGas: 6:49pm On Jul 10, 2009
Lol,  we've gone from caning to enforcing celibacy.

I "verily, verily" support corporal punishment. Does it work in all cases? No, but detentions and time-outs don't work all the time either. I get the opportunity to work with kids and tweens once in a while and I can't tell you how much I wish I could give them a dirty slap,  or how willing I am to ship them to Nja for a day just so I can teach them a lesson or two (Ok, for financial reasons, that's not true), but still, I think kids should know the power of the belt/ cane/ hand at least once in their life time, as long as the crime warrants it.

On one hand, in one of my high schools, we got flogged for incomplete notes/ absence from Biology class, so we knew to always be in class with our notes and diagrams up to date. On the other hand, I had friends from a previous school who stopped attending classes in S.S.3 because of excessive punishment from the year tutor (Iya aje). The solution is to find the right blend between hard and soft discipline. I know people who've said that they'd rather have been caned than heard the words "You've disappointed me".

BTW, students weren't necessarily flogged for wearing the wrong socks or wrong belt,  they were flogged because they deliberately did something they knew they were not supposed to do, so they were being punished more for the rebellion than the belt/ socks.
Music/Radio / Re: Reuben Abati Vs Banky W: A Must Read! by YawaDonGas: 9:52pm On Jun 24, 2009
Banky had always scored a -20 with me but his response kinda of raised him to -2, very articulate.

I thot ElDee was unecessarily rude, Banky had more points and didn't have to be rude to get them across.

I think Abati had a point or two, but didn't communicate it/ them well, culture is getting lost and while some of us would like to hold on to it, times are changing. I was listening to Chinese radio the other day and they were rapping in Chinese. Mexicans are rapping in Spanish, it's all part of the change necessary for growth. We can't hold on to before or now forever. As for the sagging, earrings, and excessive "fune", that's taking the "change" too far,

Did anyone see this as well?
