Agree with this...Downtown anywhere will most likely have their larger share of crackheads and those guys in DTK sure do light up their game...I'm in Doon South...Grand River is 2 mins away from me, 401 is 3 mins away and I looove the area!!!

Congrats on your landing. I would assume your experience with seeing drug abuse on the streets is because you live around the downtown. There are lots of very quiet and family oriented areas in Kitchener or you could consider Cambridge. Consider areas like doon south, huron park, hidden valley. You may be shocked to find same thing in Guelph if you visit downtown.

I would go with IT BA based on your educational background...Do you have work experience....Experience trumps degrees a lot of time in Canada so you would be better off looking for more experience in your field that just doing another program in Canada. The Canada grad cert might just be a nice-to-have but not necessarily a must-have. Cheers!!

Hi all!
I am currently residing in Europe and I want to emigrate to Canada, hopefully by fall (September) next year. I want to emigrate as a student and my current option is a year long graduate certificate. I have already completed a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration (Information Technology) and I am now rounding off a Master's degree in Technology innovation and management. I have a few questions and I'll need informed advice or guidance.

Job Prospects
Due to the nature of my previous studies I think I have two options for future career advancement - the IT sector (Software development, Computer/Web application designer, IT business Analyst, etc.) or Business administration (Business Analyst, Project Management, Research Analyst, etc.). I want to know (Based on your experiences (either personal or vicarious)) if you were compelled to advice me, which of these two sectors you think will lead to high-earning good job offers at entry-level position after a one-year graduate certificate program. E.g. Computer Application Developer vs. IT Business Analyst, IT Business Analyst vs. Business Analyst.

Getting a Permanent Residence

I want to settle in Canada after my studies. I want to know what you think is the surest process for student integration.

Which of the provinces allow students to become residents with minimum conditions?
Is a year long graduate certificate with it's accompanying one year post graduate work permit too risky (due to time constraints) to allow me successfully transition into a permanent resident?

Cost of living/quality of life

I am in the process of saving the required amount of funds needed for one year's tuition fees (e.g. 17,000 cad$) and 15,000 cad$ for living expenses for a year. Which cit(ies) can offer affordable cost of living (accommodation, amenities, transportation, etc.) and also easy to get casual or entry level part-time jobs that require little or no qualifications? (I am currently focused on Ontario, for some reasons it has the most colleges that offer the type of education I'm interested in, unless I haven't been searching well enough.)

Well, that's it for now smiley. I hope I haven't asked too much?

Please house, seniors, anyone with relevant advice or guidance related to my questions feel free to share.

Thanks a lot!

Did you land yet? What you choose all depends on where your interest lies the most and your comfort level at learning what might be newish for you in the IT field. For the 8-month program with the Sharepoint specialization it appears that some previous experience with Sharepoint will be useful. Otherwise you will be better off going slow with the 2-year prog in Software Development and buidling your competency from the ground up. Cheers!

Canadabee:
Hello everyone,

I have been a silent follower for a year now and I just received my COPR last week.

I have a Bsc in Computer Science from a Nigerian University. However, I have not used my certificate to work as I became an entrepreneur immediately after finishing school. I am a bad ass fashion designer. Hubby was the PA so my experience didn't count.

I am looking at setting in Calgary and I want to go into software development.

I am stuck between registering at Bow valley college for a 2 year diploma in Software development OR Innotech College for an 8 month programming diploma with Sharepoint Specialization.

I will really appreciate if the Landed Experienced gurus can help me decide which will be better and also any other good option IN Calgary.

I am also about taking Java classes now and might do the Comptia A+ certification(just to hold body).

I will be landing in December by God's grace.
Lectures start in Jan for BV and in Feb for Innotech.

Hey everyone. I am Nigerian and Canadian PR for 1 year and have a job but was DENIED VISA to the US on June 19th on grounds of not having “strong economic ties to Canada” Can some1 explain what this mean. Who in his right mind would forfeit his PR status to go stay back in the US illegally? I am very sad and upset! I sense some racial bias because of my black skin colour. A married pregnant Nigérian lady was also denied right before my eyes. This is embarrassing. Share your thoughts please

What the heck? shocked shocked shocked A PR denied a US visa? Your officer must have been on some high grade sum’n...I got 10yrs visa which is the standard for PR just last month after a 5 min interview and no documents checked!! Did you show them your PR card? Unbelievable!!

I think I visited this thread after some months just in time to speak to you.....Don’t take the 65k!!! You are being lowballed big time cool shocked You have an impressive array of skills which should fetch you not less than 80k minimum. I have a similar profile though more focused on Cisco/Juniper with a CCIE RS to crown it and 2 weeks after landing I had an offer of 90-100k but declined due to some pertinent personal reasons. I currently have a contract with a telco which is worth about 70k which is “below market-rate” for my profile as the recruiter even admitted but I took it cos it fit with my plans for this year. Don’t get excited because you can get flustered when you realize quickly you have got a raw deal. Just go to Indeed.ca and see the plethora of jobs there. You are overskilled sha...I will take just your Cisco certs and tell you that you are worth at least 80k.... And you have experience with Vsphere, Netscaler, Palo Alto and F5 and you wanna take 65k? My advice to you...Look for a perm-role which will not offer less than 80k or get incorporated and get a contract for starters to build some Canadian experience for like 6 months and start looking for perm roles in the 90-110k range. It’s easier to leave a contract than a perm job.All you need is 1 or 2weeks notice and fewer HR hoops to jump through. Use LinkedIn...I’ve gotten tired of recruiters trying to romance me for roles all over and even in the US. You know you have arrived when the recruiters are literally begging you to let them place you in a role. Maybe we should take this offline if you wish but once again.....DONT TAKE THE 65k!!!!! Thank me for this advice later cool I hope I don’t get roasted for this but this is the realest I can get with you as a fellow IT professional. Cheers!!!

I still encounter c++ once in a while. A lot of devices in the electrical industry still run on c++ or similar languages.

The thing with IT is it's quite very wide and a lot of people do not know where to start from. A lot of people visit Google looking for information about the IT industry and end up being more confused than before. It happened to me.

So, I think the starting point for most people is to look for that point where their current job or something they would like to do in the future intersects with IT. That way, it is easily relatable and narrowed down. For example, someone interested in programming should first ask the language used to write that HR software they use at work; someone interested in the web should ask the languages used to develop websites. Someone interested in networking should ask himself or herself who the leading manufacturers of routers are before taking any classes.

Another misconception a lot of people have is that IT all about programming. This is not true as there are many jobs in the IT industry that do not involve writing a single line of code.

Truth!! IT is a big field but everyone can find something IT-related to do. Basic Networking (CCNA) and Systems (Windows Server/Linux) and Cloud (AWS) will be more than enough to get you started of pretty well here. And the great thing is that you can teach and learn yourself most of the entry level IT skills for absolutely free on YouTube (well you need to pay for internet access). Not all IT is programming, although that is one of the hottest skills here too. If you can learn a bit of that you are even better off because it's all about software these days...

For those looking for jobs, you know you have to tailor your resume according to the job description Cos if you keep sending off one generic resume for every opening chances are you won’t get that call from HR. Cos most company seive our resume with the keyword software. (Forgotten the name) anyways I used this website; jobscan.co and it helped me immensely hopefully it helps another person. Greetings from The 6ix!!

Emphasis on the boldened....EVERY application must be customized....Spray and pray is like putting your resumes in a shredding machine. It just won't work. Case in point....I was at a recruiting event and approached one recruiter....She took my resume, read just the first line of my career profile and when she saw some key words she just stopped and looked up at me and said "Yes i'm hiring for roles in this area so you are in good shape for this". Customizing is work but the more you do it the better you get at it. Jobscan.Co is good but it's paid after a while right?

Do you get it now? wink

Hahahaha....yes i get it now grin grin Chop e-kiss for this.... tongue

On a more serious note....when you scroll down the page I linked to above for the last round of invitations and check the numbers against the various CRS ranges you can see why the CRS keeps hovering around the current levels....Drop it to the 411-420 range and about 10,000 ITA's will have to be issued in the next draw...Hmmm, those of us who got ITA with only 425 na only God oh. I guess it's purely a capacity issue. Checking out the figures for the 2017 immigration projections given for FSW that those of us on this thread are pursuing, one can see how they control the numbers given ITA's in order to approach that budgeted number. It will also appear that this is done in order to ensure "timely" (rolls eyes) processing of applications. Apparently the backlog of applications pre-Express Entry had been cleared giving rise to the high levels of ITA's issued from the lowered CRS score in April/May/June. Looks like from this report also that there are less than 300 FTE's working on FSW applications. I don't know what to make of that either. For all those waiting for the CRS cutoff's to drop I say keep hope alive!!! There is hope for the future!!! abeg manke our Senior Data Analyst crunch the figures and give updated findings on the CRS scores. He has already done some preliminary analysis in one of his posts. In Canada there is a category of work known as the skilled trades..Ranging from Plumbers, mechanics, bricklayers, woodworkers etc etc. In order to practice in one of the trades you need a certificate of qualification. The process to obtain this certificate is what is outlined below. hope this helps.

For the provincial nomination, kindly check this link https://www.nairaland.com/3999848/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled/262#61318743

@GlitteringStar How do you do the hyperlinks pls?? e don taya me dey try

walter08:
Pls explain this for me

7) Do you have a certificate of qualification from a Canadian province, territory or federal body?
Note: A certificate of qualification lets people work in some skilled trades in Canada. Only the provinces, territories and a federal body can issue these certificates. To get one, a person must have them assess their training, trade experience and skills to and then pass a certification exam.

People usually have to go to the province or territory to be assessed. They may also need experience and training from an employer in Canada.

This isn’t the same as a nomination from a province or territory.

Santino1:

That's not the point Glitteringstar was trying to make. It seems a lot of people don't understand this.

The eligibility is like the foundation on which CRS rests. If your eligibility is faulty, then your CRS is null and void.

To explain, to be eligible for the pool (where CRS apply) you need to be eligible to apply first. So for instance, if his score was 70/100 because he answered that he has an uncle which earned him 5 points. Now if he doesn't show evidence for that, the 5 points gets knocked off from his eligibility score which now become 65. Thus, that means he wasn't eligible to enter the pool in the first place and he only got ITA because he misrepresented himself. I hope this is clear now.

He is comfortably swimming in the post-ITA pool oh grin grin
That 5 points wont make a difference to his 461 CRS so he is better off removing all aspects of the application leading to stories that touch.

GlitteringStar:

grin grin grin

Okay! Let me explain.

You need to read page 0 of this thread to know more about the whole process. However, the summary is that the whole process is in two stages. The first thing to do is to determine your eligibility. To be eligible, one must score a minimum of 67 points out of 100 points. Use the Come to Canada tool to check if you are eligible. You will get additional 5 points for adaptability if you have a relative (PR/Citizen) who is living in Canada under this first stage. The second stage is where you are ranked based on your CRS score.

If you are not eligible, then you cannot proceed to stage 2.

Therefore, you need to check if you didn't get points for adaptability because you might become ineligible after removing your uncle if the additional 5 points was added to your FSW points to make you eligible for the program.

I hope you are no longer confused. wink smiley

Note:
Pre-ITA is only a stage. The real work is the POST-ITA stage. Please, research and read more to know all about the FSW program.
