Southeast Asia’s Most Visited E-commerce Platforms of the Year

- Lazada maintains its lead as SEA's most visited e-commerce platform.
- Shopee ramps up against Lazada’s lead by 66% becoming Lazada's closest competition by November 2018.
- SEA's top 10 e-commerce platforms grew at an average of 53% in 2018 compared against the previous year.
- E-commerce players from Indonesia and Vietnam namely Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Blibli, Thegioididong, and Tiki are dominating the SEA region despite its only available locally.

The year 2018 has been significant for the e-commerce industry in Southeast Asia. Among the notable highlights in the region were from Indonesia's two eCommerce giants Tokopedia and Bukalapak. Tokopedia received a $1.1 billion funding from Alibaba Group- SoftBank while Bukalapak, on the other hand became Indonesia’s fourth Unicorn. Meanwhile Lazada, the biggest eCommerce in SEA received an additional US$4 billion. A recent study by Google forecasts that the e-commerce industry in the region will be valued $23 billion in gross merchandise revenue (GMV) by the end of the year. By 2025, the SEA e-commerce industry's estimated value will be US$102 billion in GMV.

Given the potential and rapid growth of SEA e-commerce, iPrice Group conducted a market analysis to track which e-commerce players finished first in the region, and its exciting new competitions and developments in 2018. Our market analysis research were based from the total desktop and mobile visits of biggest e-commerce platforms from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. The e-commerce players included in this study is based from our Map of e-commerce report which ranks the most visited e-commerce platforms (on desktop and mobile web) in their respective countries.

The Rapid Growth Of Southeast Asia’s Top 10 E-commerce Platforms

Based from the overall e-commerce traffic across SEA, 10 biggest emerged are Lazada, Shopee, Tokopedia, the visits between January and November 2018 saw a drastic growth in traffic by 53% on average. This positive uptrend is mirrored by Google’s report stating that the online retail sector is moving quicker than expected.

Commanding the biggest market share of online traffic of the year are Lazada at 27%, Tokopedia at 17%, Shopee at 15% and Bukalapak at 12%. Lazada maintains its market-leading position despite facing stiff competition from Tokopedia and Shopee throughout the year. By the end of 2018, we see Shopee closing into Lazada to become its closest competitor. Shopee grew its traffic to overtake Tokopedia and reduced Lazada’s preeminent position by 66% in its total visits.

Indonesian and Vietnamese E-commerce Platforms Competing with Regional Players

Lazada’s dominant position was almost overtaken by Tokopedia in July and August 2018. In fact, Tokopedia, was able to sustain a high number of online traffic garnered from its Ramadan and Hari Raya sale campaign in May 2018. The Ramadan period was considered among the most important festive season in Indonesia. It is a popular sale period as consumers will actively purchase gifts, apparels, and decorative items to prepare for the occasion in June. As such, it was apparent to see that both Tokopedia and Lazada experienced a dip in online traffic in June 2018 in Indonesia as most consumers were offline during the Hari Raya celebrations.

Among the many successful efforts initiated by Tokopedia to maintain its increased online traffic after Hari Raya was with its 9th-anniversary sale, which was held in August 2019. The Indonesian e-commerce company has been particularly impressive as it was able to challenge for the top spot though it was focused in a single market. Compared with its competitor, Lazada is available in 6 countries. Its success received further validation as Tokopedia recently raised $1.1 billion from Softbank in December 2018 to become Indonesia’s most valuable startup, valued at about $7 billion.

Also remarkable in the regional level were Vietnamese e-commerce platforms Thegioididong and Tiki with the average total visits at 29 million and 26 million respectively. This was particularly impressive as both players are only available in the Vietnamese market.

Thegioididong (also known as Mobile World in Vietnamese) initiated its business as brick and mortar electronics store since it was founded in 2004. Through the years, the electronics store rose to become the most prominent platform in Vietnam both online and offline. In its home country, Thegioididong overtook Lazada to become the second most visited e-commerce platform after Shopee by November 2018.

On the other hand, Tiki was popular amongst locals as well and is backed by Chinese e-commerce giant, JD.com. The e-commerce company recently received approximately $44 million to develop its business specifically for the Vietnamese market.

Biggest Improvement in Total Visits between January and November 2018

By comparing the percentage of growth in total visits between January and November 2018 we were able to see who grew the most by the end of the year. E-commerce platforms with the most remarkable growth figures were JD at 246%, Shopee 158%, and Tokopedia at 94%. JD.com has continued its expansion into Southeast Asia recently launching its e-commerce platform JD Central in Thailand in October 2018 and has made great progress in Indonesia as well. This was evident as they grew the fastest from 5.4 million in January to 12.7 million in November in total visits.

***

All data on the total visits on desktop and mobile web in this study were taken from global traffic figures from the respective regional sites. Insights based on SimilarWeb data.

Phones / Why Is The Iphone A Top Of The List Smartphone Brand by yshielynn: 10:11am On Jan 12, 2019
iPhones have been the smartphone of choice for many smartphone consumers around the world. Whenever the latest iPhone is unveiled, it will cause a buzz among netizens and the public. Apple Philippines iPhones have become immensely popular than Samsung phones amongst Filipino smartphone aficionados today for a multitude of reasons.

Efficient Real-World Speed
iPhones are known for setting the benchmark when it comes to performance speeds. iPhones have proven their worth in various speed tests done by experts, as the results show that they constantly outperform any other model in the market. iPhones can run smoothly even while multitasking, being able to handle demanding tasks without slowing down. Even having multiple background apps do not slow down the device’s performance.

iPhone Apps Are More Abundant and Better Looking
The two biggest mobile app stores belong to Android and Apple. Although most of the popular apps are featured on both platforms, many tops games and apps will usually be made available on iPhone first. Moreover, there are more apps that are specially made for Apple only compared to specially-designed apps for Android. The apps tend to have a better design on iPhones compared to the same ones on other devices.

Fast iPhone Updates
Another benefit of using an iPhone is that users can receive iOS updates frequently, no matter which carrier you are using. According to statistics released by the App Store in February 2017, about 80 percent of iOS devices were running iOS 10, the latest version of Apple’s operating software in mere five months after its release. Moreover, you need not change to the latest iPhone to receive updates from Apple as the company delivers updates even to devices that are three years old. For example, the iPhone 4s still receives iOS 9 support, whereas the latest-and-greatest iOS 10 is available for the iPhone 5.

No Bloatware
Another reason why the iPhone is much loved is that the iPhone does not have any bloatware. Bloatware will take up a considerable amount of storage, reducing your ability to install and download your favourite apps. An excessive amount of bloatware will also cause the device to slow down. Thankfully, unlike other phones, you will not find a single carrier software pre-loaded on an iPhone. Although Apple still includes some apps that you might not use or need, it is significantly fewer than other manufacturers. Furthermore, the iOS 10 enables users to disable built-in apps that you are not using, which is the second best option since these apps cannot be deleted from the device.

iPhones have Higher Resell Value
When most people are thinking of upgrading or replacing their current smartphone, they will sell off the older model. If you sell a one-year-old or two-year-old cell phone, you often receive much less than the amount you paid. However, when you sell an iPhone like the iPhone 6 price Philippines you will notice that the resell value will be much higher than other models.

Purpose of the laptop

If you’re getting one for work use, you might not need a high-performance laptop unless you are into design and computer technology fields. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a gaming laptop, you will prefer one with higher specs, which might require a bigger budget.

Size of the laptop

For most of us, a laptop is a computer we would ideally take with us everywhere. From home to office, we haul our portable computers everywhere like our lives depend on it. Some of us even bring our laptops and use it to look for discounts like a Klook voucher or Agoda promo when on vacation! That’s borderline crazy. But all in all, laptop size matters due to mobility reasons. Screen size is also an important aspect to consider.

Laptop Brands

Whatever your choice, make sure your selection fits the model you own.

Laptop Price

Another thing that you should consider when buying a laptop is your budget. It doesn't always mean that an expensive laptop would give you the best specs, you just need to find a good laptop with a great price in the Philippines! Laptop price Philippines usually range from P10,000 to as much as P50,000 so it's pretty flexible in terms of price.
Family / Tips On Choosing The Right Air Conditioner For Your Family by yshielynn: 1:14pm On Dec 18, 2018
Air conditioners are your best friend especially when you’re just trying to get through hot summer days. When the sun is blazing out there, rays penetrating your skin and momentarily causing a burning sensation, all that we would wish to do is chill out in a cool place. Being baked in the sun while spending your time outdoors is inevitable, however, you can make your life better when you step into your home or office with the perfect aircon. Grab the latest Lazada voucher code and save big when buying the perfect aircon to beat the heat!

The first thing that you need to know about aircons is that there is not one type. You can choose between split-type, AC, portable, standing, etc. Both window AC and split AC have their own advantages. Window AC is generally cheaper and more convenient to install. Meanwhile, split AC is quieter, thus promising you a good night sleep without unpleasant AC sound. There is also a portable aircon which is great for small rooms and apartments as well as floor-standing aircons for big rooms.

CAPACITY
Another thing that you should look at when choosing aircons is the capacity. When you choose an air conditioner, make sure the capacity of your AC could accommodate the size of your room. Usually, if you are in a room with of 120-140 Sq. ft. area, you might need an air conditioner of 1 ton. If your room is larger than that, you might have to increase the capacity of your AC.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Electrical appliances that are energy efficient can be very consumer-friendly. They consume less electricity, thus helping you to save up on your utility bills. As a smart consumer, don’t forget to get yourself an energy efficient aircon. Though a bit more expensive, inverter aircons usually consume lesser electricity and doesn’t wear down easily.

CLEAN AIR AND QUALITY AIR
Indoor or outdoor, your lungs strive for clean air. A good air conditioner supplies quality air with its good filter. It makes your indoor air cleaner and ensures smooth flow of cool air. Choose an air conditioner with the most effective filter. A couple of months or years throughout the line, you will have to clean or change your aircon’s air filter to keep it from breaking down and maintain cool air flow.

START CARING FOR YOUR AIR CONDITIONER
Taking good care of your air conditioners ensures their efficiency as well as longevity. Make sure you conduct regular service as this enables optimum performance of your AC. During this servicing process, it is important to check the filters. Some can be reused while others might need to be replaced. Clean or replace the filters every 1-2 months. In addition to that, you will also have to pay close attention to your aircon coils. If they get dusty, your AC has to utilize more energy and electrify to absorb the heat and maintain a cool environment.

Computers / 8 Simple Ways To Keep Your Laptop Secure by yshielynn: 3:11pm On Nov 30, 2018
Most people don’t realize the potential of being affected by hackers and cyber risks when online which leads to the need for cybersecurity. The problem with cybercrime is that as a crime it’s severely underestimated, and many don’t even realize that there is a threat and completely disregard or ignore their safety online.

In the past few years, cybercrimes have been occurring with rising frequency all over the world. From spam mail and phishing to ransomware and identity theft, cybercrime can happen to any company, government, or individual. Just last year Yahoo announced that a security breach in 2013 compromised over 1 billion yahoo accounts, revealing information such as names, cell phone numbers, birthdates, passwords, and even security questions.

Another case in 2015, where millions of accounts were affected, is the Ashley Madison hack. A team of hackers known as the Impact Team revealed 37 million users’ information when the Ashley Madison team refused take down the site. Details such as addresses, names, and credit card information were revealed and spread all over the internet. A recent survey also revealed that though much strides has been made to make credit card and online payments secure, more than 60% of internet users are still afraid of cyber-attacks.

These attacks show that if large companies like Yahoo could be targeted, there’s no saying that it won’t happen to us.

As laptops are more accessible than smartphones and less unwieldy compared to desktop PCs, they’re more likely to be physically tampered with than other devices. Disregarding the possibility of theft, your laptop can be easily hacked with just a USB stick and some malware if left unattended.

That being said, here are some simple ways to keep your laptop and the data kept on it secure.

Consider Two-Factor Authentication

As the name implies, two-factor authentication means that after inputting your password there is another step involved in logging in, usually a text message to your mobile giving you a special code. Therefore, if someone is able to guess your password, they can’t login to your account without alerting you.

A bit of an inconvenience for some, but worth it if you’re worried about your safety online, and honestly, what’s a few seconds of bother compared to your safety.

Install Some Form of Anti-Virus Software

Pretty self-explanatory, anti-virus software regularly scans your laptop for viruses and potential malware threats. Most anti-virus software has free trials or free versions so maybe consider installing one.

For those with Windows 10, the general consensus is that the Windows Security software that comes with it is a good enough security system, but for those worried it’s not enough, you can also install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free anti-malware program that allows you to manually scan your system for whatever Windows Security might have missed. Furthermore, do consider installing an anti-virus application on your smartphones too. Malwarebytes delivers virus protection to your Android devices – samsung phones, cherry mobile phones, cloudfone and etc.

Use a Different Password for Everything

Most of us have one or two passwords that we use for everything but this is actually an extremely risky move and can be dangerous if someone figures out the password for your email that you also use for your bank account. If you have trouble coming up with new password maybe consider using a password generator and if you’re afraid of forgetting them.

Choose a Strong Password

Most of us use passwords that have some meaning to us, like our birthdays or middle names, so it’s easier to remember, but the unfortunate flipside of that is that it makes it easier for hackers to guess our passwords and exploit them.

To counter that many people have taken to using password managers, we recommend LastPass, which saves and remembers your passwords of different accounts so that you won’t have to.

Be Wary of Email Attachments

Anyone with an email account has gotten spam mail before, maybe even fallen for one or two scams or downloaded a virus by accident. Email viruses are one of the oldest security threats, right next to the “Click Here To Win!” pop ups from when the internet was still new. Even though you might think you know better, the truth is anyone can to fall victim to malware attacks. Virus senders have taken to disguising malware as email attachments, which is innocuous enough that most of us don’t even think before clicking to download them.

To eliminate the possibility of downloading malware, make sure to keep a look out for emails from strangers or ones that look suspicious. Usually Google scans the attachments you receive and warns you against downloading them, so try to heed the warnings.

Don’t Reveal Every Little Information about Yourself on Social Media

We use social media a lot, and unthinkingly, we share information about ourselves online that could be used against us in ways we don’t realize. Locations, phone numbers, birthdates, can all be used to guess our passwords if we aren’t careful with what information we share online. Try making private information about yourself sparse on your social media profiles, or at least be more careful when accepting friend requests on Facebook if you can help it.

Have a Good Firewall

You probably know what a firewall is but have no idea how it works or what exactly it is. Basically, a firewall is a program that tracks the information coming in from online to your laptop or private network. It filters out the information packets that is deemed unsafe and stops it from coming through.

There are two types of firewalls, hardware and software. A hardware firewall is usually built into your router and already turned on. Software firewalls are usually enabled by default on your laptop but if for some reason, it’s turned off, here’s how you can turn it on again.

Never Leave Your Laptop Unattended

As previously mentioned, laptops are easy to steal, which is even more dangerous if you don’t have a password locking it. It only takes a few seconds for someone to install some malicious software while you’re in the toilet, not to mention just picking it up and walking away with you none the wiser. Ensure that there’s always someone keeping an eye on it if you can’t do it yourself, or at least install some kind of tracking device on it.

Family / Is It Beneficial To Occupy Your Child With A Smartphone/tablet? by yshielynn: 10:49am On Nov 03, 2018
Gadgets like smartphones and tablets do a great job at making children busy, which is beneficial to parents who have important things to do. However, some parenting experts are wary about the effects of these touchscreen devices on children, especially younger kids under 3 who use them. They say that too much screen time may cause negative effects on kids’ brain development. For this reason, many parents are concerned and unsure whether to introduce these touchscreens to their young children.

Since these gadgets are still new, pediatric research hasn’t fully made a clear stand on this issue. So far, here are the pros and cons of touchscreen use in children.

Pros of Using Smartphones and Tablets

--Touchscreen devices are tools to improve kids’ aptitude for technology, which is an essential skill they can use in the future. That is why it is reasonable for kids to use these devices at an early age.

--Gadgets provide an opportunity for kids to learn in a fun way. Most children’s apps like the ABC Baby Guide Book, for example, have impressive and fun visuals on the iPad that your child will likely enjoy.

--If you are involved in your child’s use of gadgets, it will foster his/her cognitive and social development. It’s also important that you watch and talk about what he/she is doing or seeing on the device.

--Smartphones and tablets improve your kid’s hand-eye coordination. As your child taps icons or images on the device, he/she will see visually appealing effects, in turn, entertaining and encouraging him/her more to touch the device. This will make him/her proficient in touching virtual objects on the gadget, ending up developing his/her hand-eye coordination. This skill is essential in sports and for completing simple day-to-day activities.

Cons of Using Smartphones and Tablets

--Due to the high levels of blue light emitted by touchscreen devices, kids who sleep near these gadgets every night have 20.6 fewer minutes of sleep. This is because blue light decreases melatonin levels which are essential for stabilizing circadian rhythm. Prolonged exposure to blue light at night may cause children’s body clocks to reset, making it difficult for them to sleep. This leads to not having enough sleep and rest.

--UCLA’s Children Digital Media Center conducted a study in 2014, suggesting that prolonged and frequent use of touchscreen devices may negatively affect children’s social skills. Not to mention, it limits their understanding of other people’s emotions. For this reason, it’s best that parents should moderate their child’s screen time so they can do other activities like playing with other kids. This can improve their social and emotional intelligence, essential for their success in real life.

--Young children should not get all of the stimulations from smartphones and tablets; they should also be active physically. Spending too much time on touchscreens takes every opportunity for physical activity. Fortunately, parents can provide such opportunities for physical play by limiting screen time and allowing them to explore their environment. This can improve their child’s fine and gross motor skills as well as hand-eye coordination.

--According to a study in 2013, kids age 3 to 5 who read through electronic books with their parents had lower reading comprehension than children whose parents used traditional books. One of the reasons why was that both parents and kids were distracted by the bells and whistles of the gadget, preventing them from focusing on the story.

Screen Time Guidelines for Children Using Smartphones and Tablets

To alleviate the negative effects of touchscreens and maximize their benefits, here are some points to keep in mind regarding your kid’s use of interactive screen time. Following these tips will instill a healthy tech usage for them.

--Limit your child’s screen time if possible so that he/she can do other activities like reading or actively playing with other kids.

--If your child sees you spending too much time on your phone or tablet, he/she will most likely do the same thing. This is because kids tend to emulate their parents’ behavior. Make sure to prioritize your child over your gadgets by having constant communication and spending more time with him/her.

--Introduce rules for using gadgets and make sure your child adheres to them. For instance, if he/she does forty-five minutes of reading or playing sports, then he/she can exchange it for forty-five minutes of screen time. You can be more generous to your child during weekends.

--If present, make use of the built-in parental controls on your child’s device. It’s best to set it high at first, so if your child wants it adjusted, then he/she will go to you. This is the perfect time for you and your child to talk about what are the things he/she’s doing online.

Smartphones (like Asus Zenfone Max, Samsung S7, Oppo A37, Cherry Mobile Flare S4, Vivo Y53 and many more) and tablet screen time does have its pros and cons on children’s brain and body development. Although its negative effects are something parents should be alarmed about, they should not discount the benefits it can provide to their children. At the end of the day, moderation and balance will straighten things out and maximize the benefits.
Phones / Why Were There So Little Interest In The Iphone 8? by yshielynn: 2:08pm On Oct 29, 2018
Apple announced that it will be releasing three flagship smartphones - the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and the 10th-anniversary iPhone X. The iPhone 8 officially went on sale worldwide on 22 September 2017 while the iPhone X will not be in stores until 3 November. Although CEO Tim Cook claimed that he was “thrilled” with the response for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, some reports from around the world suggested that demand for the iPhone 8 is low.

Mild Responses for iPhone 8 Around the World

However, what was seen on the 22nd September 2017 can be said to be something out of the ordinary. The usual long queues and large crowds that are always present during the release of iPhones was not seen. Instead, what greeted the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were smaller crowds and muted customer reaction compared to its predecessors. Reuters reported a “bleak turnout” in Australia and that there was a “muted launch” in Asia, a stark difference to what could be seen during the release of previous iPhones.

According to The Guardian, there were fewer than 30 people lining up before the Apple’s Sydney store opened on 22nd September 2017 instead of queues stretching for blocks. A similar level of interest could be seen in Asia and in Europe as Apple’s Regent Street store in London only saw a small gathering of diehard fans.

Even in China, which traditionally has a large Apple fanbase, the reaction for iPhone 8 is noticeably weaker compared to past years. At 8 a.m. when the doors of Apple’s West Lake location in Hangzhou, only two people could be seen.

Possible Reasons Behind the Mild Response for iPhone 8

Experts have concluded that there could be a few possible reasons behind the lacklustre response of the iPhone 8:

Awaiting the Arrival of iPhone X

One possible reason to justify this less than enthusiastic response could be because Apple fanboys and iPhone users who are planning to change their smartphones are awaiting the iPhone X to be released later in the year.

Unlike previous years where only one version of the iPhone was released, Apple decided to release the iPhone 8 and iPhone X in the same year, with their availability being less than two months apart. Moreover, the iPhone X outclasses the iPhone 8 in terms of specifications and design which can be another deciding factor why consumers are passing the iPhone 8 in favour of the iPhone X.

Francisco Jeronimo, European mobile devices research director for IDC shares his views, “There will be a high number of consumers looking to replace their smartphones because people who bought the iPhone 6S are looking to replace their smartphone at the end of their two-year contract. The question is whether they will buy the iPhone 8 or wait for the iPhone X.”

Bored of Minor Tweaks and Upgrades

If you are familiar with Apple’s approach for the iPhone over the years, the iPhone 8 features minor tweaks and improvements from the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. In fact, the iPhone 8 is pretty similar to the iPhone 7 with significant upgrades being that the former is able to shoot videos at 4K 60 frames per second and a new glass back instead of metal. The modest refinements present on the iPhone 8 might not be attractive enough for iPhone users to purchase the phone. Moreover, consumers could be bored Apple’s strategy of introducing iPhones with minor improvements and upgrades and branding it as a new flagship device.

Growing Preference on Online Shopping

Another possible reason why fewer people are seen on the streets to purchase the iPhone 8 is the growing popularity of online shopping worldwide. In recent years, the number of people queueing up outside Apple stores were slowly dwindling as many buyers has chosen to purchase the phone online and having it delivered straight to their door.

It seems that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is not performing as well for Apple as its predecessors in terms of sales figures thus far. Being the more sought-after device in trio of iPhones released by Apple this year, the iPhone X should see better results compared to iPhone 8.

Music/Radio / Best Music Streaming Apps You Must Have On Your Smartphone by yshielynn: 1:42pm On Oct 22, 2018
Music is a very integral part of our lives; it expresses the unspeakable and sends a message only understood by emotions through a beautiful mix of different tones and rhythms. Music is a wonderful thing, really. Imagine a life where there is no form of music, not even the most basic of rhythms – life would be eerily empty. There would be no constant droning of machinery, there will be no soothing tones from the birds; it’s like half a life that has disappeared.

Music serves as a lot of different things in our lives. It seeks to entertain us by the various different genres and singers; it helps us to speak out messages and things we can never ever put into words, and it keeps us company during the loneliest times. It is an incredibly beautiful thing, really. And now, thanks to smartphones and the Internet, we can enjoy great music wherever and whenever we want.

The Power of Smartphone Apps

You see, with the coming of iPods and other MP3 players, many people can carry their entire music collection around with them. When smartphones came about, the music player and phone became a single unified device – we never needed to carry around several different devices ever again!

In the past most music we listen to had to be purchased either digitally or from physical copies in stores (and then ripped and transferred over to your smartphone or music player); but today there is a strong rise in the popularity of streaming apps. Netflix is one great example; a company that does its business by streaming movies and TV shows to subscribers.

Fortunately, the same can be said for music as well; subscribers to music streaming services will be able to listen to a ton of music by paying a basic fee monthly or annually. These also come in the form of apps that you can download on your smartphone or use on your computer. But Music apps on smartphones aren’t all about music streaming; there are also some music playing apps that play music better than their stock counterparts that are already pre-installed in the smartphones.

Spotify

What list of music apps would be complete without including Spotify in the list? Spotify is one of the best and most affordable music streaming service in the world. The service began in 2006 Sweden and has since expanded largely across the globe in many different countries and regions. The Spotify app on smartphones, be it either on Android or iOS, features a very simplistic design that is very user-friendly – enabling users to get to their music easily.

Spotify has several features in its app that make it not only functional, but fun to use. Users can listen to new music with their Discovery Weekly playlists that curate music suitable to your tastes to you; or you can even go for a run and use the Running feature that plays music to match your current pace. Spotify is available for subscription at only RM14.90 per month, or RM22.40 for your family (of up to 5 persons) – or you can just listen free with the occasional advertisement.

Google Play Music

Google Play Music has been around for quite a while as well, and many will notice the app already sitting pre-installed in their Android smartphones. Google Play Music offers music streaming to their subscribers that they can listen to without ads and also download for offline listening from over 30 million songs.

Google Play Music also allows people to digitally purchase songs, which are stored in the cloud so that you can either stream or download to your device (even without subscription). Besides acting as a gateway to purchasing and subscribing to music streaming however, Google Play Music also lets its users upload their own library of songs (up to 50,000!) to store in the cloud for streaming and backup. The downside? The Google Play Music service is only available in the USA.

Apple Music

Apple Music service is built from the very know-how of Apple’s iTunes store, iTunes Radio, and Beats Music, which they had acquired. Like the other music streaming services, Apple Music offers subscribers over 30 million songs which they can stream.

Through the app, subscribers can discover new music through the “For You” category, which builds playlists based on your listening habits; there are also songs and albums that are released on Apple Music first. The user interface of the Apple Music app is also incredibly intuitive and user friendly. If you’re interested, you can give Apple Music a three months’ free trial; or you can get an individual membership at USD 3.99 per month, or for your family of up to 6 persons at only USD 5.99 per month, it definitely has slightly better value compared to others like Spotify. Check out iPhone 6 price.

TuneIn Radio

TuneIn Radio is a service that’s free to download on either your Android or iOS smartphones. Like its name suggests, TuneIn Radio is basically an Internet radio app that lets you listen to over 100,000 live radio stations from around the world. Users can navigate through the application that is simple to use to browse for the station of their choice; be it a station that plays only a particular genre of music, or a station that places a lot of focus on talk shows. Best of all? High quality content that’s free!

Soundcloud

Soundcloud isn’t just a music service as much as it is a community of people who are passionate about music – or sound, in particular. Like its name suggests, Soundcloud is where people upload their works of music or sound up into the cloud, where it is then streamed for listening through the Soundcloud website or app. You will find a lot of different types of music here from really great indie bands with professional top-notch recordings, to budding musicians who are growing in the hall of Internet fame. If you are one of those great hidden talents, you might want to start uploading your own recordings on here – straight from the app on your smartphone itself!

YouTube Music

If listening to music isn’t enough for you and you want to get some awesome visuals in, then you’ll want to check out YouTube Music. YouTube Music is basically a YouTube that is specifically catered towards music enthusiasts and to those who like to watch music videos. YouTube Music, like the original YouTube itself, will give you access to all forms of music content, either from the famous artists and studios, and also new budding artists and indie music bands. The surprisingly loud and decent quality of Vivo Y53 and Samsung S7 will do well for watching and listening to Youtube. Check it out now.

Tidal

Tidal music streaming service is quite different from the various other music streaming services out there; but not in terms of how they provide the product and carry out business – they’re exactly the same in that sense. How Tidal differs from the rest is the fact that its target audience is the audiophiles who want to listen to only high fidelity music (hi-fi). It’s for those who has got all of the high end audio equipment like top-of-the-line Sennheiser headphones and hi-fi speakers from PMC. Tidal promises to bring music with quality that is CD-quality, meaning that listeners can enjoy the very same quality as they would when they buy a music CD.

The high quality audio definitely comes with a price, however – subscription to Tidal starts at RM14.90 for Tidal Premium which gives you standard sound quality; and RM29.80 will get you the Tidal HiFi, which streams lossless high fidelity music. Both subscriptions also get you access to high definition music videos.

Some of these music services aren’t fully available to many in the Southeast Asian region, but hopefully in the future they will. If you have doubts about wanting to subscribe to these streaming services (for the paid ones), it’s best you give them a try before deciding – most of them offer a month worth of free trial at the very least. Personally, I find these streaming services to be very convenient and affordable way to listen to music, especially in most markets in Southeast Asia where piracy is rampant.
