Politics / The Atomic Dichotomy Of Pmb’s Presidency by yummyyummy: 3:17pm On Mar 04, 2017 |
http://politicstoday.com.ng/2017/03/03/the-atomic-dichotomy-of-pmbs-presidency/ BY Abayomi G. Omotayo Twitter: @AbayomiGOmotayo Please do not over analyze the title of my piece. It is just an oxymoron. Because knowingthe nature of Nigerians that we love to analyze to the point of overkill. An example is the way we have over analyzed President Buhari’s vacation to the point that the man now calls us, his initially-beloved-but-now-not-so-beloved people mischief makers. Largely our fault because we have not minded our business, incessantly poking our nose into the private and personal affairs of Nigeria’s number one public figure. Such indiscretion and indecorum on our parts. In fact, I suggest that when he returns, just like organized prayers have been made for him in his absence for quick recovery, we should have a national “Apology to Mr. President”rallies across the length and breadth of Nigeria. NTA should be able to beam this live to our TV screens as a national service without charging a dime. This is the least we can do to show penitence and warm our way back to the large heart of Mr. President Now that I have cleared the air on the title of my piece, let’s try and deconstruct it. An oxymoron is a combination of words with contradictory meaning in the same sentence. An Atom is the smallest indivisible part of an element. Dichotomy is synonymous with a split, a division or a separation. Nigeria is officially the country of oxymoron, a people of unfortunate ironies. The Giant of Africa yet dwarf in thinking and achievements, oil-rich yet poverty stricken, myriads of Professors and record breaking achievers yet high illiteracy level. This list goes on.Recently, a most valuable governor’s wife award was organized when a large percentage of the governors are not even adding any value. If in doubt, ask the civil servants and the pensioners who are languishing due to salaries owed or take a look at the uninspiring IGRs of a large number of the states which is a testament to the lack of creativity. So where is the value? The elected husbands who are the constituted authorities (my bad, I mean governors) are not providing value but the unelected wives are the ones providing value. What an irony!Perhaps the award organizers were not specific enough, maybe value in this context is in relation to the ‘other room’. Family / Tales By Moonlight: Don Ruffy, The Chocolate Loving Audu And Five Lessons by yummyyummy: 12:11pm On Feb 25, 2017 |

Omotayo Twitter: @AbayomiGOmotayo Email: abayomi.g.omotayo@gmail.com NTA’s Tales by Moonlight should be a national treasure but unfortunately it has been trashed in the national trash can. I read an unconfirmed report online that even NTA cannot account for the tapes. In other words, they are lost. What a shame. Before I go further, please note that emphasis is on ‘unconfirmed report’ before I get branded as a peddler of fake news. I certainly do not want to be hounded by our now very gestapo SSS operatives on charges bordering on incitement this Friday so that I can sleep in detention till Monday before the possibility of a bail which I am sure would be frustrated. I cannot boast of the magnanimity of any Madam to pity me and not allow the due process of the law to wield its big axe which of course will be the intention of my arresters. I dare someone in NTA to rubbish this unconfirmed report with proofs. Well, do not blame me; I do not have faith like Femi Adesina who does not need to speak to his principal to confirm that he is hale and hearty. I accept that the mustard seed is like a giant beside my faith in this matter. We can all cheer up, it is not all gloom and doom, there is Barney and Friends, created in 1987, imported from America and still a popular children’s television series. We have warmly accepted Barney, after all, this is Nigeria, the giant of Africa cannot be confined to some local Tales by Moonlight, she needs international collaboration and exposure at the expense of local stuff as a true Big Brother of Africa. Our story for the day is already a popular folklore and remember that a Tales by Moonlight session is not complete without ‘Auntie’ asking the children the lessons they learnt from the story. Let us not bore ourselves with the whole story, we shall now go to the lessons learnt and perhaps a little bit of recap in the process. Lesson One: Advocacy is more than venting anger on social media. Advocacy must be based on facts, whether empirical, anecdotal or logical facts. Two wrongs don’t make a right therefore you cannot fight injustice with lies. Be wise, come up with facts and amplify it such that even your adversaries will not be able to gainsay nor resist. Unfortunately, the chocolate loving Audu got his facts from his driver and this eventually drove him to the DSS detention center. ‘Chai’! Lesson Two: This is Nigeria, human lives do not matter. Death toll is just mere statistics. Even if people are dying in their numbers from senseless killings orchestrated by senseless folks, the Don’s main responsibility is not to protect the people and ensure no reoccurrence. The main priority is to arrest anyone trying to advocate for the oppressed and the maimed by hiding under the guise of incitement. It is also a priority to pacify the killers even if it means paying them. It is a smarter solution. Ensuring adequate protection is a harder solution. This is twenty first century; people work smart and not hard to achieve results. ‘Gbam’! Lesson Three: This is Nigeria. Our leaders, sorry, I mean constituted authorities (never mind the fact that we the people constituted them) have a huge sense of entitlement to unquestionable devotion and bloated ego too. Physical size and height regardless. One small boy drunken in chocolate instead of love cannot just come from nowhere attempting to ruffle the feather of the master feather ruffler himself. ‘Kolewerk’. It cannot work. Family / Akwa Ibom: Land Of Promise Or The Home Of Smallie Witches? by yummyyummy: 3:35pm On Feb 17, 2017 |
http://politicstoday.com.ng/2017/02/16/akwa-ibom-land-of-promise-or-the-home-of-smallie-witches/ Abayomi G. Omotayo Twitter: @AbayomiGOmotayo I have heard and read horrific stories of child abuse but the one that top the list in my heart is the story of a frail looking, hunger ravaged, cadaverous little boy in Akwa Ibom that came to limelight on 30 January, 2016. Accused of witchcraft and abandoned by his family, he lived on the streets for eight months, survived on scraps and unprotected from the elements. He was naked, stark naked. He was just two years old. This little boy was found by Danish aid worker Anja Ringgren Loven. A year on, this boy’s life has changed. From hopelessness to hope which indicatively is the name he is now being called. That re-christening aptly fits. Now well fed, chubby and looking very healthy. She recently shared his picture on his first day of schooling. That picture, contrasted with the one she took a year ago, side by side would be a strong contender for the Pulitzer Price for Photography. Sadly in Akwa Ibom not much has changed in terms of these horrific cases of abuse under the guise of the children being labeled as witches. Just few days ago, another boy was rescued on the streets by the same lady one year after the popular case of Hope. The only thing that perhaps has changed is that unlike before when these vulnerable children are abandoned on the streets after gross abuse, they can now find succor with Ms. Loven. But this is not enough, it glaringly indicates that the society and the government have failed and continues to fail these children. These incidents should not even occur in the first instance. Lest we forget, these children are protected by law particularly the Child Rights Act 2003 enacted into law by the National Assembly. Interestingly, Akwa Ibom is among the states that have domesticated the law but it appears that the law is only effective on paper. Politics / Much Ado About President Buhari's Absence by yummyyummy: 6:56pm On Feb 11, 2017 |
http://politicstoday.com.ng/2017/02/09/much-ado-about-president-buharis-absence/ Abayomi G. Omotayo Twitter: @AbayomiGOmotayo Note to Visitors: Welcome to Nigeria, a place where cynicism intercourses with pessimism with seamless fluidity. Not that you can blame the people though, years of misrule, lies and deceit account for this. The President is on an entitled vacation and has decided to use a stone to kill two birds. Rest and Tests. Medical tests and treatment in London. Not that there are no wonderful vacation spots befitting a President or the best of healthcare in Nigeria, variety is the spice of life and at seventy four a man needs all the spices he can get to live longer. Whether from the other room or in a London hospital room. ‘Innit?’ I am not sure we have allowed him to have that rest considering the great ululation from both the wasted generation which interestingly is his generation and the generation of the collective children of anger and wailing wailers. Were it not for his military background, the stress of how the whole nation went berserk because of this vacation is enough to aggravate his health condition. If there is anytime we need to thank God for a once-military-now-civilian-president, it is now. He has survived all death wishes and arrows thrown at him which started during the election campaign. In case these evil people do not know, no one can determine the life of another and it is pure evil to wish someone death more so the number one citizen. Besides, this recession period, not only do we not desire the death of our President, we cannot afford his death. If twenty eight million three hundred thousand naira was budgeted for newspapers in Aso Rock in the 2017 budget how much will be the budget for a state funeral? Several Billions of course! After all this is Nigeria and the giant of Africa only deals with giant financial figures. Where do we get that kind of money from? Shall we now beckon on China, our backup CBN to borrow us money for a state funeral cum ‘owambe’ party. God forbid. This is Nigeria and not Yoruba nation. In case we have forgotten, the President admitted that the challenges they met are far enormous that what they anticipated. Perhaps the enormity of these challenges is taking a toll on the president and on Sunday the 5th of February he remembered that he was coming home to meet an anti-government protest, fear gripped him and he decided to use ‘wisdom’. No wonder the letter of leave extension to the senate has no specific date of return. Baba cannot allow some dissidents to send him to his early grave. Thank God for the wisdom of the elders. I hope somebody or people around him have told him that the protests still held despite Mr. Innocent’s withdrawal. Some rumour mongers said that the DSS violated his innocence that was why he pulled out. This is outrageous and nothing can be farther from the truth. What innocence is left to be violated of a man with seven children? Even I, with just two boys and still counting, my innocence level is greatly depleted if not exhausted yet. Thanks to the other room! Also, he should ask for plenty shock absorber vaccines and pills from London because when he comes back and things do not change for the better, more of these protests will come. Now on a more serious note, as a nation we need to be more objective and matured in the way we act and react to news and events. President Buhari should be greatly commended for following the rule of law by transmitting to the National Assembly his intention to go on vacation thus allowing the Vice President to act in his capacity pending his return. This is a quantum leap from the events that saw late President Yar’Adua leave this country without due process thus creating a leadership vacuum and throwing the nation to unnecessary tension. He has set a noble standard and it shows that we are maturing as a democracy. What shall I say about our incurable unbelief as a nation? Mr. Femi Adesina, the spokesperson said he spoke to the people around the President and they assured that all is well, we saw a picture of Governor Amosun and the President, The Vice President confirmed he is in touch with the President, The Senate President said he spoke with him as well. In all of these, the people still do not believe. What else do we want him to do to prove that he is alive and well? A video perhaps and who says a video cannot be doctored? The groom need not be unnecessarily anxious awaiting the arrival of the bride after all the bride shall sleep under his roof that night. Eventually, our President is coming back to us but in the meantime let us appreciate the fact that this country has not been grounded because of leadership vacuum. Can we just let this Buhari vacation saga rest and face more serious and productive business like rightly occupying the office of the citizen and keeping our leaders on their toes to bring the change they promised. |
Religion / On Apostle Suleiman: What Aileth Thee O Dss? by yummyyummy: 9:58pm On Jan 29, 2017 |
Read more on http://politicstoday.com.ng/2017/01/27/on-apostle-suleiman-what-aileth-thee-o-dss/ Preamble: 1. Two wrongs don’t make a right 2. Regardless of the validity of reasons, war and violence do not represent a better alternative. If in doubt, consider Syria. 3. The Security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of Government – Section 14(2)(b) of the1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Let me emphasize from the onset that this is a speak-the-truth-to-power piece and there will be no attempt to be politically correct because we can do nothing against the truth but for the truth. However, I do worry that the main person that needs to hear this truthhas a persistent ear infection (pun intended). I therefore plead with those that have his earsto relay this message to him verbatim, they should please remove the garb of sycophancy and say it the way it is to him. This is our collective public service.Apostle Johnson Suleman of the Omega Fire Ministries recently made remarks about the killing of herdsmen if they come near his church due to the report he got earlier from a friend that they are planning to attack him. Expectedly this has generated a lot of controversies. The Department of State Services recently attempted to arrest him in Ekiti. This was resisted. If the Buhariled government have been up and doing, there would not have been any need for this brouhaha in the first instance. Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria states that“The Security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of Government”.By happenstance or perhaps not, since this present administration began, the Fulani herdsmen have been emboldened, killing and causing mayhem across the length and breadth of this country. The best that has been done is to issue statements and life goes on. While we may be quick to caution our religious and political leaders to be careful not to make sensitive statements, let us also be quick to ask this government for accountability regarding the provision of the constitution that guarantees our safety and welfare. Are these herdsmen ghosts or witches on broom with Harry Potter kind of skills such that the Nigeria Police force, the officers of the DSS or even our military cannot apprehend? How come there has been no single arrest or conviction since this madness intensified under this present administration? Is the life of a cow worth more than that of a Nigerian under this administration? Would it not have been fantastic if the DSS can also move swiftly to arrest the herdsmen the way it trailed the Apostle to Ekiti? Once upon a time, as a perpetual presidential aspirant, President Buhari once said “If what happened in 2011 (alleged rigging) should again happen in 2015, by the grace of God, the dog and the baboon would all be soaked in blood’’why didn’t the DSS invite or arrest him then for that sensitive statement? These are questions begging for answers. This is my submission; regardless of the Apostle’s statement, when senseless killings and violence against a people by another people linger unabated with laughable statements culled from prepared templates by the government as the only response, eventually, the theory of self-preservation and balance of terror will perpetuate itself. This is the bitter truth and this is an expected end. The President must therefore resume from this ill-timed albeit entitled vacation to confront this malady headlong. As human beings, intrinsic self-preservation instincts lead to self defence from perpetual attacks, this eventually engenders the balance of terror. This ensures that both parties have equal respect and/or disdain for each other knowing that an offensive action will lead to an equal and opposite reaction. Nigeria will not get to this point provided we have responsible and capable leadership and our preachers and other men of influence will not need to burden themselves with balancing the truth and political correctness when they are compelled to make statements on the state of the nation. President Buhari’s primary Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is found in Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (The Security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of Government). Has he met it?Every morning he wakes up he should ask himself this question and not listen to sycophants around him that may be telling him all is well.On a last note, no Nigerian should be above the law, not even the President for this is what guarantees justice and fairness therefore regardless of status and magnitude of followership, when the state invites anyone, that invitation must be honored. No one should overtly or covertly display any air of self-confidence that gives the impression that he is above Nigeria or when he is arrested Nigeria will burn.On the other hand, the men of the DSS can do better next time and act more professionally. They should have formally invited the Apostle rather than storming Ado Ekiti to arrest him Gestapo style. This is 2017 and not 1984. |
Foreign Affairs / Public Notice: We Are Africans, We Do Not Plagiarize by yummyyummy: 4:50pm On Jan 17, 2017 |
http://politicstoday.com.ng/2017/01/13/public-notice-we-are-africans-we-do-not-plagiarize/ Abayomi G. Omotayo Twitter: @AbayomiGOmotayo It is no news that the newly sworn in Ghanaian president,Nana Akufo-Addo ‘borrowed’ a few words from Presidents Clinton and Obama while giving his speech during inauguration. What is surprising to me is the furore that greeted the speech. The irony stares us starkly in the face when one considers the fact that Africa is home to rich and inspiring proverbs meant among other things, to teach us how to act and react in situations. It is said that ‘esin iwaju ni teyin n wo sare’ meaning the horse at the back looks to the horse in front to guide its galloping steps. Nigeria is referred to as the giant of Africa, which means President Buhari is also the number one President in Africa. A while ago, President Buhari decided to ‘borrow’ a few lines from President Obama during the launch of the ‘Change Begins with Me’ campaign. Should it therefore be surprising that President Nana Akufo-Addo towed the same line? He simply looked up to the proverbial horse in front of him. The Europeans and Americans indulge in too many trivialities that they make a big issue out of borrowing and sharing, they need to be reminded that there is love in sharing. It should therefore be the joy and pleasure of Clinton and Obama that the elders in Africa find their speeches worthy of borrowing. It is the wisdom of the elders in bold and bright display in these two instances. It is foolishness to take a longer route when there is a well paved, better and shorter route to the same destination. Imagine the time and efforts saved from borrowing these speeches than daring to be original, thoughtful and producing riveting speeches just like that of the late sage Obafemi Awolowo and Kwame Nkrumah. The socio-economic challenges in Africa are enormous such that there is no time to waste in writing speeches when we can leverage on already written speeches. In this Information Technologyage, there is no excuse for time wasting therefore all these outcries against plagiarized speeches by our presidents are irrelevant.
