The age-long practice of Female Genital Mutilation also known as female circumcision is one topic whose discussion has lingered for long.

Several campaigns have been launched by different human rights activists across the globe in a bid to stop the barbaric act.

FGM is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female Instruments using sharp objects like razor blades.

A lot of people believe that the practice will end promiscuity on the part of the female folks.

Today, February 6, 2018 is the annual International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation.



The day is set out to sensitize people on why the dangerous practice which has led so many unfortunate girls to their early graves should be nipped in the bud.

To commemorate the annual event, United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, Jayathma Wickramanayake, has joined his voice with several others to condemn the practice, insisting that it was not acceptable in the 21st century.

The UN youth envoy underscored that the ghastly practice was an aversion to the human rights of millions and kept them from achieving their full potential.

According to him: “This is not acceptable and this is done in the name of tradition, culture, religion or in the name of ensuring that women are to take on subservient roles to the men they will eventually marry.



We could not agree less with his assertion because the world is fast evolving and we are supposed to do likewise.

Globally, over 200 million women and girls are estimated to have undergone some form of genital mutilation and girls aged 14 and younger account for about 44 million of those who have been circumcised.

According to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), although the practice is declining in many countries where it is prevalent, many of these countries also experience a high rate of population growth.

This means that the number of girls who undergo genital mutilation will continue to grow if efforts are not significantly scaled up.

Female Genital Mutilation ought to be added in the list of criminal offences and defaulters brought to book.



Many other African countries including Liberia also now have legislation that that forbids the practice.

History has taught us that human societies can come up with reprehensible social practices – that are justified under false guises – to strengthen the power structures or maintain the status quo for certain groups in society.

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation aims to strengthen momentum towards ending the practice.

The practice is globally recognised as a violation of the human rights of girls and women that perpetuates deep-rooted inequality between the sexes.

We can join our hands and lend our voices with a million of others to stop this practice which has apparently done more harm than good in the society....

Everybody Deserves To Be A Virgin...

Have you ever been in a scenario where the subject of love, relationship and sex is being discussed?

If so, you must have noticed the usual pride with which the male folks talked about sex and pride in the number of girls they have had sex with, like it were some achievement of some sort which deserved a Grammys.

On the other hand, the female folks usually lie very low during such discussions in a bid to avoid being labeled loose by the society.

Do you know why it is so? I will tell you to the best of my ability as we progress on this discourse.



The truth is, the society spends so much time training the girl child to the apparent detriment of their male counterparts.

Girls are put through the rigors of strict moral lessons with special lessons on how to eat, talk and walk in the public in order not to appear ‘un-ladylike’, while the guys are abandoned to whatever they deem fit.

Meanwhile, their male counterparts would be left to wallow in ignorance of whatever little training they get from anywhere without any particular attention to morality.

They are made to believe that the world revolves around them with teachings that make them feel like potential heads of homes as society demands.

Cooking and other domestic chores are made alien to them because contrary to Beyonce’s belief that girls run the world, men think they should be the ones running the world instead.



Virginity is not reserved for any particular gender per se. It takes two to tango for crying out loud!

Men are actually also expected to be virgins too. If there is any way the society would correct that anomaly that virginity is only reserved for girls, it will be really great.

It is about time the society started making virginity demands from men also. Or is it because it might be difficult to tell which man is a virgin and which is not because of the nature of their sexual organs.

For a fact, it appears rather nauseating to delve into a discussion to see a man bragging about how many ‘keys he has unlocked’ only to see a woman trying so hard to stay away from the discussion to avoid being labeled.

Gone are days when women allowed themselves to be relegated to the background because they feel themselves no longer deserving a space in the public eye simply because they have broken the ‘almighty hymen seal’.



If there is a way the society can correct this anomaly it will be really great because in reality, it takes two to tango.

A girl doesn’t lose her virginity to herself; just the same way a man doesn’t lose his virginity to himself. It doesn’t even make any sense.

Really, the society expects rather too much from the girl child far less than what they expect from the guys and it is all shades of wrong.

We can correct this anomaly.
