Ibrochaka:
sorry to ask, what is the essence of buying the USD on the platform since it cannot be transferred or sent to other platform for usage.

So I will just walk to the platform, buy USD and then use the USD for what?.... Sell it back at your rate directly to my linked bank account?

You can't even buy crypto from them. You can only receive crypto on the app and it will converted to naira at a lower official bank rate and paid directly to your linked bank account which is not profitable. I rather sell my crypto on Bybit and other Exchange Platforms at black market rate which is higher than the official bank rate.

To your linked bank account

You are confusing people. I just checked the app properly now and I noticed that you can only receive Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and then it will be converted to naira at the official rate and paid to your linked bank account. YOU CAN'T BUY CRYPTO FROM THE APP AT THE OFFICIAL RATE. YOU CAN ONLY RECEIVE CRYPTO AND THEY PAY YOU IN NAIRA AT A LOWER BANK OFFICIAL RATE.

Celebrities / Why Nigerians Should Help Me To Change My Accommodation – Dunamis ‘celebrity’ Te by Zofan(m): 2:12pm On Apr 26
Vera Anyim, the lady who became famous because of the controversy that trailed her recent testimony at the Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Abuja, has reached out to Nigerians for support in finding secure accommodation.

Anyim made the appeal in a video that started making the rounds on the internet on Thursday.

Anyim’s testimony, initially questioned by the church’s Senior Pastor, Paul Enenche, sparked widespread debate online.

Enenche interrupted and questioned the credibility of Anyim’s testimony at his church.

The woman, who claimed to have graduated with a “BSc in Law” from the National Open University of Nigeria, was accused of lying by the senior pastor.

He said that her speech did not align with that of a law graduate and insisted that no such degree as a “BSc in Law” existed.

The incident ignited varied reactions on social media when it was discovered that the testimony was genuine, with some calling on Enenche to apologise for his actions, while others defended his stance.

The church had in a statement, apologised to Anyim.

They stated that the Senior Pastor’s actions were driven by a dedication to maintaining standards of excellence and integrity within the church community.

Anyim who recently returned from a sponsored vacation at Portland Resorts Hotel in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, is now seeking assistance from Nigerians to secure new accommodation.

She deemed her current living situation unsafe and calls upon the public for support.

She said, “I want to say to Nigerians, you know this thing that happened is a thing of joy, I never dreamed of it, it came this moment, I never dream of being a celebrity.

“It just came all of a sudden. I never prepared for it. I want to use this medium to urge us to assist me with accommodation because I am not buoyant now to rent a house. Where I am staying now is risky and insecure. It is a very open place and everybody has already known I am a celebrity.

“When I left Abuja, some people in my compound didn’t know what was happening, but I was there, and so many of them have heard what was going on. Some have said they are waiting for me. My brother, who stays with me, told me that people gathered, all waiting for me.

She expressed concern that people might misunderstand the situation and assume she received a large sum of money during her time in Port Harcourt

The chairman of the Port Harcourt-based resort, Azubuike Ihemeje, had invited Anyim for an all-expense paid trip.

“That is why I am voicing out, asking for assistance to enable me to get a place I can stay so that my life can be safe. As I’m talking to you, I’m just hiding myself so that people will not come and misbehave at my side.

“So, please, if there is any way you can help me for me to get accommodation where I can be secured as a human being, intelligent people know what I am talking about.

“I don’t need to move or stay anyhow. If you don’t mind, you can assist me. Nothing is too small.”

Politics / Fuel Scarcity Persists In Nigeria Almost One Year After Subsidy Removal by Zofan(m): 11:54am On Apr 26
Nearly a year after the Nigerian government phased out fuel subsidy, citizens have continued to face persistent fuel shortages and long lines at petrol stations nationwide.

This ongoing crisis highlights the complexities and challenges in the country’s fuel supply chain, despite earlier government promises of improved market competition and efficiency.

Naija News understands that President Bola Tinubu’s elimination of the subsidy on May 29, 2023, aimed to decentralize fuel imports under the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, shifting control from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to the private sector.

However, the transition has been anything but smooth. Private companies struggle to secure foreign currency for fuel imports, forcing the NNPCL back into its role as the primary supplier.

Despite the NNPCL’s assurances of a steady fuel supply, the reality on the ground tells a different story. In major cities like Lagos and Abuja, fuel queues have become common, with numerous stations running dry.

This situation has been worsened by logistical issues such as sporadic supply and operational shutdowns at various filling stations, caused by increased haulage costs demanded by tanker drivers.

The impact on prices has been stark. In some areas of Lagos, petrol prices remain fixed, while in others, such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, prices fluctuate significantly, reaching as high as ₦645 per litre.

Similar price hikes are observed in Abuja, where fuel costs vary widely, with some stations charging up to ₦724 per litre.

The NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, urges calm and discourages panic buying. He attributes the tight supply to “logistical issues” that he claims are being resolved.

However, industry insiders and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) tell a different tale, pointing to irregularities in supply that hint at deeper systemic problems.

The impact of these disturbances is noticeable throughout the country. Due to the scarcity of taxis and buses, commuters in Abuja and other major cities find themselves stranded or forced to pay higher fares.

This scarcity has not only inconvenienced daily life but has also fueled inflationary pressures, further straining the budgets of Nigerian households.

According to a report from LEADERSHIP, in similarly dire regions like Kaduna and Maiduguri, Filling stations frequently close or hoard fuel, hoping to sell at higher prices amid the uncertainty. This has led to a resurgence of black market activity, where prices can soar to ₦1,000 per litre, placing a heavy burden on consumers.

Despite occasional reassurances from government officials and the NNPCL, the end to Nigeria’s fuel woes seems distant.

As the country faces challenges, there is a growing call for stable and equitable fuel supply systems, highlighting the need for effective reforms in the petroleum sector.

Sports / Jose Peseiro Claims Sports Minister Didn’t Contact Him by Zofan(m): 11:44am On Apr 26
Former head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, has reportedly said the minister of sports, John Enoh, didn’t contact him over the vacant coaching job.
Jose Peseiro, who coached the Super Eagles for over two years, left the job after his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expired on February 29, 2024.

Peseiro’s time with the Super Eagles ended after leading the national team to a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Since then, the NFF has been making efforts to appoint a permanent coach for the national team while they appointed Peseiro’s former assistant coach, Finidi George, as the team’s interim coach.

Amidst the hunt for a new coach, reports went viral that the sports ministry made contact with Jose Peseiro to bring him back to the national team.

But Soccernet claimed that Peseiro revealed to them that there was no contact between him and the sports minister. He also revealed that he has been enjoying his vacation in Spain while keeping taps on games involving Real Madrid.

Note that several coaches, both foreign and local, have been linked to the Super Eagles coaching job since the Portuguese tactician left the job. Some of the frontrunners for the job are Emmanuel Amunike, Domenec Torrent, and Toni Conceicao.

In an interview with Channels TV recently, the sports minister said the NFF is expected to announce a new coach for the Super Eagles between a week and two weeks.

Politics / TUC Rules Out Possibility Of New Minimum Wage By May Ending by Zofan(m): 11:12am On Apr 26
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has ruled out the possibility of having a new minimum wage in place before the end of May.

According to the TUC President, Festus Osifo, this follows the non-completion of negotiations on a new minimum wage.

This is as he urged the Federal Government to fast-track action to ensure a living wage for Nigerian workers.

The TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, who made the call while briefing journalists after the National Executive Council (NEC), in Abuja.

Speaking further, Osifo strongly lashed out on states that have failed to pay either the wage awards or palliatives to their workers, accusing Delta, Imo, and Benue as the worst culprits.

Besides, TUC noted with dismay that the Federal Government has not paid federal workers the wage award for the months of March and April this year and called for the immediate payment of the wage award to cushion the economic hardship.

“The NEC in session discussed the issues of minimum wage and that government has to do everything possible to ensure that this is fast tracked because the only way you can inflate your economy is when you empower the working class. The only way you can inflate your economy is when people have money to purchase goods in the supermarket, when people have money to go to the regular market to purchase items. If there is no money to purchase these items, if the purchasing power parity is relatively low, what is going to happen?

“So, we demand that the committee on minimum wage should hasten their activities so that a new minimum wage will be put in place. This is the only way that the economy will be re-inflated.”

Comrade Osifo also called for the review of obsolete labour laws in the country, noting that, ” for several years, we have been trying to review the labour law. All attempts to get the ninth National Assembly to pass the new labour law did not materialise.”

Commenting on wage award, Osifo said, “Then also in the issue of wage award, the NEC in session also frowned on the fact that the last wage award that was paid to the federal workers was February 2024 and that of March and April that is just ending have not been paid.

“So we hereby call on government to immediately, release the payment of wage award for March 2024 and April 2024 and to ensure regular payments moving forward, so that at the end of April, when salary is coming in, the wage award is also paid until the new minimum wage is put in place as agreed in the communique of October 2 of 2023.”

Also speaking on the Stephen Orosaye’s report, the TUC lamented that there is no representation of the organised labour in the committee for the review or implementation of the report.

“We hereby call on government to inculcate members of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria into the committee that is currently reviewing or implementing the Orosaye’s report, because you cannot shave our hairs when we are not there. We will not accept any fallout that is going to impact on our members when they conclude without us. So we demand that we must be there to look at what the committee is doing and also make our recommendations and make our voices heard.”

Lamenting on the lukewarm attitude of some state governors in the payment of wage award and distributing palliatives to the workers, TUC said, “There is no gain saying the fact that today we are facing economic hardship and based on this at the federal level, we engaged the federal government as you are aware, from last year that culminated in the signing of the communique on October 2 of 2023.

“And after that communique was signed, we also empowered our respective state councils to follow up with their state government to ensure two things, one, put in place palliative. Palliative is for the immediate, palliative is not a permanent solution to the economic downturn that we are facing today as a country but palliative could solve immediate challenges, but it will not be able to meet in the long run, palliative cannot solve our problems.

“So that is why we were also yearning for a sustainable solution that is robust. A solution that would meet the yearnings of the Nigeria workers and indeed the Nigerian masses, because that is why the governments are elected from the federal to the local government level.

“We collated reports across the various states in the country. And in that report, we could see that some states have been doing literally well, in terms of payment of wage award, in terms of putting palliatives in place. And in terms of putting in place a more robust and a substantive solution to solving the issues that we have today as a country.

“And some of these states that are worthy to be mentioned are Borno, Oyo, Lagos, Kaduna , Rivers, Yobe, Bayelsa Ebonyi, and the Federal Capital Territory.

“But we have some states that have done literally nothing they have done next to nothing. Even some states in the Niger Delta that are receiving over 20 billion naira per month have literally done nothing to solve the economic challenges of today and also put in place a sustainable solution for tomorrow.

“And top in that list is Benue. Benue state has done nothing for the workers. Benue state has done nothing for the masses of the state. Literally nothing has been done in Benue. So, we hereby call the government of Benue to put in robust mechanisms to solve the economic challenges that our members and the masses are passing through in the state.

“And also the state of Anambra, we are a bit surprised because we felt if that state is being led by an economist, he should be able to put on his thinking cap, he should be able to put in place a sustainable solution that will appease the masses of that state. But Anambra also falls in this category.

“Then the state of Imo is another one that literally has not done anything to appease our members. The same thing to the state of Delta. Delta tops the list of states that collect fat allocation from the Federation Account. Delta is number one in that list, it is surprising to know that the Delta State governor is doing nothing to uplift the plight of workers in Delta. So we hereby call on him that as the state governor, he promised a lot when he was on electioneering campaign that the talk is over and that this is the time to act.

“Also, Akwa Ibom, they have done a little but they should do much more because these are states with means these are states with huge amounts of revenue. They should do much more. Then also the state of Kebbi and the state of Katsina. We strongly believe that what they are doing is piecemeal, and that they should up the ante.”

The TUC leadership also carpeted the Federal Government over its unilateral decision to increase electricity tariff without consultation with stakeholders.

According to Osifo, such decisions are not implemented in advanced climes. He said it is even more worrisome that most Nigerians are not metered, calling on the government to rescind implementation in the interest of the suffering masses.

TUC also decried the level of insecurity in the country, lamenting that farmers cannot go to farms for cultivation for fear of being killed.

He warned that unless government tackled the situation head on, the prices of food and other commodities would keep rising beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians.

Osifo said: “We held our NEC where we reflected on the recent increment in electricity tariffs, we consider this decision as being too hasty.

” There are provisions that ought to have been followed before you increase electricity tariff, there ought to be stakeholders engagement, but in this case it was not done.

“Today electricity tariffs are being increased when some people are still using estimated billing. We have expected that by now every single house in Nigeria should have pre-paid meters, we insist that there must be stakeholders engagement to arrive at a critical decision like this”.

On the inability of the Port Harcourt refinery to kick off operations by April as promised by the Federal Government, TUC said it was part of the reasons for the resurgence of fuel queues in parts of the country.

He urged government to hasten up and actualize it, so as to lessen the economic hardship in the country.

“Sometime last year TUC made a visit to Port Harcourt refinery and government told us that by April the refinery will start production, but till date nothing is working there. We urge government to do everything possible to make it operational.

“We call on the government to tame insecurity because farmers are no longer farming, we see what is happening in Benue and Jos. People need to go to farms to cultivate, that is what will reduce the price of goods and other commodities in our market.”

Politics / Tinubu To Judiciary: Undertake Reforms For Functional Justice System by Zofan(m): 8:27am On Apr 26
President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, called on the nation’s Judiciary to embark on reforms that will ensure a functional justice system and support economic growth.

Tinubu gave the charge when he declared open the National Summit on Justice, 2024, held at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja.

Represented by his Vice, Kashim Shettima, the President also emphasised the need for a legal framework that would guarantee basic human and political rights of individuals and provide security for all Nigerians.

According to him, much can be achieved when institutions of government, including the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary, unite to acknowledge their challenges and brainstorm.

” This is with a view to proffering solutions to the problems bedeviling Nigeria,” he said.

The President, therefore, urged the judiciary to align its activities within the tenets of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

” Particularly as they relate to the priorities on inclusivity, fairness, rule of law, and anti-corruption stance, among other things”.

He said that his administration had pledged to be impartial and adhere to constitutional principles.

Tinubu said that the Summit availed institutions in the justice sector “with an opportunity to push boundaries by identifying needed system changes and critical reforms that would allow Nigerians to reap the benefits of huge investments in the sector.”

He explained that the Federal Government was determined to implement its policies and promises made to Nigerians for a renewed hope, through the instrumentality of the “law and the dictates of justice to create opportunities for our people.”

President Tinubu said that his administration made funding for the third arm of government a top priority, doubling it in the Renewed Hope budget 2024 by more than 100 per cent from 2023 budget.

” I urge the leadership of all justice sector institutions to seek a new direction and focus on outcomes by creating a justice system that truly responds to the needs of our citizens.

” I demand informed and coordinated responses to the identified challenges plaguing the effectiveness and efficiency of the sector.

” I demand performance so that Nigerians can feel and acknowledge the impact of your reform efforts.

“Ultimately, the expectations are that law and justice should aim to ensure public safety, economic development, peaceful co-existence, and the well-being of our people,” the President added.

He also challenged participants at the summit to come up with policies that serve the needs of all citizens both now and in the future, adding that there must be a concerted effort towards improving public trust in the sector.

While demanding performance from the sector, so as to provide a fair and just system for all, he assured that he will not interfere with the Judiciary, adding that he will continue to work with the bar and bench in ensuring Nigerians enjoy the dividend of democracy.

Also speaking, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, observed that the summit is not just a forum for discussion but a call to action, adding that experts’ recommendations must be translated into effective policies that will address not only current inefficiencies but also future challenges.

“I will not be telling the truth if I say that we at the National Assembly is not aware of the delays and backlogs plaguing our courts, which not only deny timely justice but undermine faith in our judicial system”, he said.

According to him, these delays harm society’s most vulnerable and create an environment where justice is seen as inaccessible and inefficient.

The Senate President subsequently called for urgent reform in the approach of interlocutory appeals in civil cases. “Currently, these appeals often cause unnecessary delays, prolonging litigation and burdening our courts.

“As was done in the criminal jurisprudence during the enactment of Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, we propose that all appeals in civil cases should be taken only after the conclusion of the substantive case.

“This change will accelerate judicial processes, reduce backlog, and ensure that litigations are not unduly prolonged by intermediate appeals”, he added.

Another area Akpabio also claimed requires urgent reform is the need for obtaining the Attorney General’s consent before executing judgments. He observed that the requirement often acts as a bottleneck, delaying justice and undermining the autonomy of the judicial system.

To that extent, he said the legislators are proposing a replacement of the requirement for the Attorney General’s consent with a mandatory notification system.

He said: “Upon receiving a judgment against the government, the relevant authorities will notify the Attorney General immediately in writing.

“Following the notification, the Attorney General will have a specified period, say 30 days, to respond. The response could involve initiating an appeal or settling the matter directly. This timeline ensures prompt action and prevents undue delays in justice delivery.

“If there is no response from the Attorney General within this period, the judgment will be executed automatically. This measure is crucial to prevent stalling and ensure that judgments are respected and enforced in a timely manner. In cases where the judgment comes from a final court, the option to appeal is not available.

“Therefore, the Attorney General’s response would be primarily directed towards settlement. This approach ensures that the government acts responsibly as a litigant and respects the decisions of our highest court in the land”.

He claimed that reforms like this foster trust in the justice system and improve the overall efficiency of legal proceedings involving the government.

Another area he sought reform is the misuse of ex parte orders in political cases by judges. He said to curb this, it is imperative that the National Judicial Council (NJC) exercises stringent oversight and met out decisive punishment for judges who are found to abuse their authority in this manner.

“We further propose that the NJC establish clear and detailed standards governing the issuance of ex parte orders, accompanied by a defined set of sanctions for violations. These sanctions should be severe enough to serve as a deterrent against future abuses

“We recommend that the NJC should conduct regular audits and reviews of ex parte orders issued by judges to ensure compliance with established standards. This proactive approach will help in identifying patterns of abuse early and in administering corrective measures promptly.

“In addition to punitive measures, we also emphasize the importance of ongoing training and education for judges on the ethical and responsible use of judicial discretion in issuing ex parte orders”, he added.

Meanwhile, in his remarks, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Olukayode Ariwoola, lamented that justice is still a far reality for most Nigerians, and has therefore called for a critical look at the legal framework with a view of making necessary reforms.

Ariwoola urged that the judiciary must leverage technological innovation in order to address issues of corruption, inefficiency, and undue influence.

The CJN said that the judiciary under his watch has recorded a significant milestone.

Also speaking, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, said the justice sector under his watch will continue to push for mutuality in the formation and implementation of the national policy on justice.

According to him, the policy seeks to improve mechanisms for fair and speedy dispensation of justice; detention and correctional services; restorative justice; alternative dispute resolution (ADR) — developing Nigeria into an arbitration hub on the continent; commerce and economic activities; compliance with treaty obligations; synergy and cooperation across the justice sector; and independence of the judiciary; among others.

“Regarding the emphasis on strengthening the independence and welfare of the judiciary, it is to be recalled that one of the cardinal items on the Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration is to drive judicial reforms to achieve sustainable socio-economic growth and investment, facilitated by the rule of law, and to address the challenges militating against judicial development in our country.

“One key theme that has been added to the National Policy on Justice is Justice for Children. This is in line with our commitments under various international, regional and national instruments on protection of children consistent with the guiding principles on the best interest and welfare of the child. The idea is to adopt deliberate and strategic interventions for dealing with children in contact with the law,” he added.

Also speaking, National Programme Manager, RoLAC II, International IDEA, Danladi Plang, observed that quality reform would attract the much needed Foreign Direct Investment to grow the economy.

According to him, investors would not want to come to a country where their money would be tied down.

“When you go to litigation they ask somebody to pay money into the court until the case is determined. We have cases that have gone up to 10 years. No investor would want to come to a country like that.

“So improving the efficiency of the justice system is important not only for commercial cases but also criminal, we have seen many people detained for a very long time because their case has not been heard,” he added.
