Morning, Thanks for your views GiantParrot, dualprince, PhatIon and olusuccess2012.. First of all let me state this, I was also awarded the scholarship. its not that am jealous or anything. being a Nigerian, it is sad to say we are divided by religion and tribe. this two factors are the main problems we face today. As i recall 2011, there is no representation of the yoruba people in the top five positions in Nigeria, why was that? are you trying to tell me they cant produce a good person for any of the slots? Nigeria has be built on power sharing since its inception. however at the early stages we had selfless people (who dont care about self wealth eg when ahmadu bello died is account was over drawn by 5 naira so he was in dept, when Maitama sule was removed as minister he had to borrow money from his friends to take his family back to kano from lagos) but now the tables have turned. Our main problem as Nigerians now is that we dont know how to identify selfless people. Nigeria is not the only country that employs zoning in one form or the other... if every thing was merit based you will get a high concentration of educated people in one area. the aim of the government in this case is to elevate its universities by providing better lecturers. any university you go to the majority of the students are from that geopolitical zone mainly because of various factors such as security, religion, cost etc. Trust me general knowledge on road signs doesn't mean ur smart.. it just tells me you know ur traffic rules.. its has even be argued that tests are not the through determinates of knowledge. Dear GaintParrot, how do you measure the impact of other scholarships, the question i have for you is how did you measure the impact? i believe its to early to tell.. its just like me asking you what is the impact have you made to nigeria from being awarded your degree last year or the year before.. only time can tell your impact. Dear dualprince, the problem is, there is no unity. our problem comes from simply lack of obeying rules and regulations. the federal character aims to ensure equal representation of all sides at all levels of government. dude its not the system that is corrupt its the people. I have a quote for you "if you think education is expensive try ignorance." the French and Russians did it and they paid heavily cause it ignited revolutions, education and wealth should not be concentrated in specific areas. unity can only be gotten if all sides feel equal. Dear olusuccess2012, all scholarships awarded in nigeria are said to be merit based however other factors take into effect like eg best two students in all states. and trust me if it wasn't for zoning jonathan wont be where he is today. if ur hausa at the end of the day you wont stay in benin, you will move back. |

Just went through the complete list... I believe how power is shared... The nuc should have looked at how other boards award sholarships.. Eg ptdf, nitda and the rest.. Out of 100 over 20 come from one state... I believe there is something wrong somewhere.. Over 60 people from the list A̶̲̥̅̊я̲̣ε̲̣ from one geo political zone... What happened t̶̲̥̅̊ø̲̣̣̥ unity and the one nigeria we have been thought in pri schools... |

the list coming out is an issue, however there are more concerns for people whose names make the list.... especially if you have an idea of how hard it is to secure an admission into the listed school... talked to a friend of mine in the US... he said the scores you require to get into the university are high, Some take 1 year just to prepare for the GRE exams others Two years.... for those planning to enter for there PHD, Work de your hand... keep in mind your research area must add knowledge to the area ur studying... trust me is not an easy thing to come up with a proposal... as to the requirements of the universities stated... I dont think the nigeria government can secure admission for 100 students in those schools mainly because most of the schools in the list have a deadlines to collect all applications then compare and select the best students as they have limited seats available.. so my fellow comrades the fight is just beginning... cause ur not just competing with those who make the list but also with all other applicants who are applying for the same program as you.... its easier to get admission to a taught masters program, however some might be interested to pursue their phd programs straight (its an opportunity why not take it)... so they start looking for admission into a Mphil/PHD program not a taught masters.. however due to competition some university only take students with already taught masters program already. so basically every one can chose what path best suits him... some can even start to look for admission on other universities and try to apply for the ptdf scheme starting in October but you admission first before you can apply for that one (its all about keeping ur options open, not all eggs in one basket).. for the list yet to be published, we are all Nigerians, the longer the list takes the more likely it would not be based on merit, as you all know we have cabals even in NUC... and the cabals have candidates... lol... so the more delay the more pdp that will occur... its sad... 3 Likes |

I believe what the NUC did with the list was good, mainly because the current situation in Nigeria is not stable, its getting worse by the minute. if it wasn't for zoning... Jonathan would be where he is today, Zoning came along during OBJ regime (yoruba), and even now the yoruba's are crying, because of lack of proper representation in the top levels of government due to some advisor of Jonathan. I believe if you can find a good chemist or doctor in the south, you will find someone equally as good in the north. All scholarship programs conducted by the federal government eg PTDF are all done on a state by state basis, only the Ministry of NIger delta concentrates on the South. Nigeria is not used to this new system jonathan wants to adopt. for the same reasons federal character commission was created. |
