N180 billion yearly as mentioned is very misleading in the context in which the article is wriiten.
How is the sum arrived at and based on what indices? Is the airline going to be operating for free and not generating any revenue?
Yes a Beoing 777 (A wide body aircraft) cost over $300 million dbut who says it must be wide body aircraft. A narrow body aircraft the likes of Airbus 320's and Beoing737-8 series cost about $72 million.
Again who says it has to be a brand new aircraft that Nigeria Air has to start with. There is the option of leasing aircrafts be it under a wetlease (aircraft and crew) or drylease( aircraft only).
Emirates (one of the largest airlines today) started with 2 wetleased aircraft from Pakistan International Airline in 1985.

If Ethiopia can run a succesful airline by all international standards the question we need to ask is why can we not do the same?
Why can we not do same?... The answer to that is simple, "we are Nigerians".

Nothing owned or operated or overseen by the Nigerian government ever works; whatever venture the Nigerian government touches eventually dies. This is a fact that has been repeatedly proven empirically for almost 60 years. It would surely be a thing of national pride to be able to step into an aircraft bearing a Nigerian logo in far away London or new York, but of what use is national pride when in reality, the venture would be a disastrous national liability?

I liked the idea of Nigeria Air though, considering that the govt would only own 5% shares and would not have any business operating or managing the proposed airline. But is that really really the case here? Cos anything other than that, would be disaster.

The new standard gauge rails and train services for which billions of dollars have been spent, that's another sad disaster waiting to unfold with govt being the owner and operator. The trains are already a messy national liability as we speak; and we're still buulding more.

That is the hallmark of our failings as a nation. The very corruption we are talking about that has bedevilled us and crippled every facet of our national and economic life. The pride to make our collective interest work is what we do not have as a nation and until we cultivate that spirit of nationhood we will remain rooted to the very spot we are where nothing works.

I didn't bother to read that bullshit. What I know is that Nigeria can afford to have a national carrier but corruption won't let them.

If we could be committed to this project am sure it would be profitable for our economy.
It would even generate more than this amount.

But the way they are talking now
Is better we move to keeping the money.
Even if we say keep the money, some persons would still share the money .,

I believe God will help this Nation

Nigeria cannot run an airline today. Even oyinbo who have maintenance culture and good customer service have their airlines only just afloat.

Folks will not ask where is Nigeria Airways, Kabo Air, Okada Air, Chachangi, Bellview, Sosoliso, ADC, etc and etc.
because we are black men, who hate knowledge, donot do post mortems, mount road blocks instead of libraries of criminal science, abhor the study of history so will be eternally condemned to repeat failings.

No one wants to know why the average lifespan of air concerns have been about a decade despite the fact that their owners and promoters have been some of the most endowed, profesaional and savvy business men of their time. Something obviously doesn't add up yet no one wanted to find out before throwing billions into the fire yet again by ignoring he warnings of those burnt to ashes.

Can anyome explain to me why we are this dumb.

guy! Corruption was the sole aim of the whole charade. This was just an opportunity for the aviation minister and his goons to corner their share of the national cake.

Except for its indefinite suspension last Wednesday, the national carrier, Nigeria Air, was to cost Nigeria at least N180b yearly for the next 10 years, operators have said.

Local airlines operators, who are privy to the actual business design, as well as, the cost implications said the financial commitment, weaved into the five per cent equity, was mandatory to keep the airline up and running.Even though the Minister of State for Aviation Hadi Sirika did not give reasons for the suspension of the airline, which he earlier said would takeoff on December 24, 2018, The Guardian’s investigation showed that the development was not unconnected with investors’ apathy, ownership structure and funding issues.

It was further learnt that the huge financial request forced the last Federal Executive Council (FEC) to drop Nigeria Air off the priority list, since it was not budgeted for anywhere. While the operators described the indefinite suspension of the launch as a step in the right direction, sources hinted that over a billion naira had been sunk into the business case design, work by the transaction advisory team in the last two years, and unveiling of the logo in London recently.

According to the Chairman of the Airlines Operators of Nigeria (AON), Capt. Nogie Meggison, setting up an airline requires huge capital investment and that explains why national carriers are no long fashionable around the world. Meggison said it was in this light that AON continued to call for a rethink, especially given the tough economic situation in the country and the fact that “it is a moribund idea”

Meggison said: “Setting up of National Carrier will cost Nigeria at least N1.08t ($3b). A single Boeing 777 as of today costs about N115.2b ($320m).“Is it wise and should it be our priority as a nation to take $3b from our coffers today and put into a venture that will for sure go down the drain within a maximum of five years it will take to establish a national carrier?

Also, bear in mind that the national carrier will need an additional cash injection of N180bn ($500m) subsidy per year on average for the next 10 years to keep the airline afloat, while about 97 per cent of the 200 million Nigerian masses today are grappling for the basic necessities of life; food, shelter, electricity, water, education and good roads,” he said.

Sharing AON’s view that owning a national airline because of national pride is out of vogue because it is capital intensive is Chief Executive Officer of Topbrass Aviation Services, Capt. Roland Iyayi. Iyayi said: “Just recently, the South African government had to inject $2m into the South African Airways, but how many times will a government be bailing out a national airline? There was a time Alitalia was bailed out by the Italian government, and when it found out that it was no longer tenable, it turned to privatisation.

“I am a businessman. If I have already lost $5m and I see that my continued exposure to the same enterprise would amount to $100m loss, I would choose, which of the two options is cheaper for me. And that will be $5. Meaning that no matter how much the government has expended now, it will be pittance to what it will lose in the long term. For me, I would stop now instead of doing something that is not sustainable.”

The Federal Government in July unveiled the name and logo of the proposed national carrier, Nigeria Air, at the Farnborough International Public Airshow in London. As contained in the Outline Business Case (OBC) approved by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and disclosed to the public, the airline is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project, with 95 per cent share pushed to investors while the government will own the rest.To get the new national carrier start off, the government will be injecting N3.168b ($8.8m) as the startup capital. It was learnt that the N3.2b is part-payment for the government’s five per cent equity in the investment, whose takeoff fund in the next three years of operation has been put at N108b ($300m).

Typical Nigerians and criticism!
We will not be the first country to have a national carrier, neither it is the first time Nigeria will have a national carrier.
Sometime ago, Nigerians decried the absence of a national carrier, the death of the Nigerian Airways. Today efforts are been made to revive that dream but now it's a bad idea.
Save the cost implications, this idea is plausible and fanciful.
This idea should not go down the drain, a Public Private Partnership will ameliorate the cost implications and reap economic gains.
We want our country back.

undecidedWe're losing our renown sense of adventure and can-do. Fund the military ((No!)people complain and site competing demands); fund space program ((No!)people complain and rephrase UN and WHO like paternalistic philosophies about the need for third world peoples to leave innovative thoughts to the first world and instead priorities mundane needs ); and now, fund common necessary national airline and it's as if the world will end, as if we’re contemplating sinking all our budget on a ladder to the moon; people complaining and drawing upon figures and stats to underline reasons why we should rely on Ethiopia airlines. Observers would think figures and stats are novelties, the way we’re carrying on with it and not THE “figures and stats”, famous for being tools for couching lies in respectability if nobody looks hard enough.

In the interim, India, one rung above Nigeria in poverty ratings, is rolling out the world’s largest free health program. Bet Nigerians shouting loudest about why we should not fund a National carrier will be first to board Ethiopian airline for India to partake of their free healthcare wink
