About 160 more hostages rescued from Boko Haram stronghold:

Nigerian troops have rescued about 160 more hostages from Boko Haram's Sambisa Forest stronghold in northeast Nigeria, the country's army told AFP on Thursday.

"We are still trying to compute the actual number of those rescued. But tentatively there are about 60 women of various ages and around 100 children," said army spokesman Sani Usman.

Usman said one woman was killed in the fighting and eight other rescued hostages were injured. A soldier was also killed and four others wounded.

I am perplexed beyond reason, the failure of the top brass to equip our combatants with the required basic equipment that is expected of the modern combatant borders on treason.

The second picture down looks like special forces combatants, seeing them The saying "penny wise million pound foolish" comes to my mind, we send our combatants on I am sure very expensive specialised training in Isreal, Russia , even Pakistan etc. The flight tickets alone will be at least $700 to $1000, after undergoing specialised weapons training they come back and we issue them with antiquated AK47's. What a joke special forces without optical sights on their assault rifles , they should not be using old fashioned binoculars but thermal imaging scopes and of course NVG should really be standard issue for all combatants not just special forces.

It costs less that $600 wholesale and good negotiation for a top assault rifle incl. optic scopes and under no circumstances should they be in the back of a soft skinned pick up in combat zone. What does it cost for used APC less than a brand new land cruiser pick up truck.

left Israel with loss of territory, even

The names of this conflict stems
from the important Jewish festival
of Yom Kippur, and the Muslim
month of Ramadan, in which the
annual fast of Sawm is performed. From a rare moment of
flabbiness in Israeli intelligence and in the government,
Israel did not expect any attacks from its neighbors just at
this point in time. The background for this is that 2 very
important religious festivals coincided in both Islam and
Judaism, two festivals in which there was a prohibition
against warfare.
Egypt and Syria used this laxity to launch a surprise
attack on Israel. The goal of the war was to win back lost
Arab territory from preceding wars, first in 1947-49, then
1956 and especially in the last, the Six-Day War of 1967.
Following these wars there had been no political progress
in solving the situation of lost territory and large groups of
Palestinian refugees. A deep frustration had come over the
entire Arab world, which came to motivate strong
sentiments, and new political orientations in the
populations. At the eve of the 1973 war, the Arab nations
felt that they had every excuse to wage war against Israel.

on both Israeli and Egyptian side, but much of the

History

Sambisa: Over 400 Boko Haram fighters killed in renewed onslaught, more women rescued [PHOTOS]

A top military officer, who did not want his name mentioned, has revealed that over 400 Boko Haram fighters and commanders lost their lives in yet another fierce battle with the Nigerian Troops in Sambisa forests.

He said a soldier and a woman also lost their lives during shootouts and rescue operation in Sambisa Forest, on Wednesday as Nigerian troops further pumped the heat on Boko Haram fighters.

However, a statement from 7 division Nigerian Army also said that the firefight in nine separate camps in the dreaded forest led to the rescue another set of women, in Boko Haram captivity. The number has not been disclosed yet.

According to a statement by Col. Sani Usman, eight women also sustained gunshot wounds, just as four soldiers were seriously injured.

The army spokesman said several Boko Haram field commanders and foot soldiers were killed and that combat tanks and ammunitions of high calibre used by Boko Haram were recovered while others were destroyed.

“The troops have also rescued additional women and children,” the statement said, adding that “They have been evacuated to a safety zone for further processing.”

The military was flying-in medical and intelligence teams to evaluate the former captives, many of whom were severely traumatized, Usman said.

Last year the NA procured the Beryl M762 (7.62 X 39mm) this is essentially a re-badged and somewhat modernised AK47 manufactured by the Polish. The heavy bullet of the AK47 looses velocity and as such its effective range is still under 300metres, the heavy recoil and iron sights further limit its accuracy dramatically compared to more modern assault rifles that chamber the (556x45mm).

Your assertion that AK47 bullet is more damaging is not correct, if you eventually overcome the limitations of range and very poor accuracy after expending countless rounds. The 7.62mm is more likely to go clean through on impact comparative to the 5.56mm which will disintegrate on impact causing much more internal damage and therefore a kill.

With a modern assault rifle such as the HK G36 & 416, FN SCAR 16, M4 With ranges that exceed 500 metres, using optical sights in the hands of an experienced operative probable hit rate, head shot is about 80% at 300metres, body shot 100%. That exceeds essentially the effective range of the antiquated AK47. When you consider the terrain of the NE and Boko's roaming ground there are a lot of wide open spaces that means you can pick off even the gunners on those technicals at 500 metres + before they even see you from your position of cover.

The Russian army has since dispensed away with the AK47 and adopted the AK74 with the 5.45×39mm bullet in its chamber, with far less recoil, greater accuracy and increased effective range with some variants exceeding 800metres.

I still disagree with you, let's be practical in the heat of battle and with all the modern assault riffle u'v mentioned like HK G36 & 416, FN SCAR and M16 variants how many soldiers can ascertain they shot the enemy @ even 200 to 400 meters that's even when u r in a plain desert and terrain and the enemy keep popping on different directions and ur anderalin is pumping fast !
I keep saying it on different threads a weapon is good or ur ar being deadly because uv can handle and mastered ur weapon and being accurate ! That's mask-man ship ,FN SCAR or HK G36 would not save u on the battle field and I can't trust my life with all these modern riffles that jam on the heat of battle the AK riffle is a tested riffle on battle fields. the only thing is dat it dosen't come with the optical sight, and dat would av improve accuracy.
Not withstanding if the top-brass in DICON deem it fit to change or start producing the AK versions like ;12,101 and 102 it will be a welcome idea !
But what makes u survive right outside there is ur skills,mask manship, descipline and how well u understand ur enemy, u will never make it out there because of the type of weapon ?

Freed Nigerian women tell of how Boko Haram killed men and boys
Boko Haram fighters killed older boys and men in front of their families before taking women and children into the forest where many died of hunger and disease, freed captives have revealed.

Hundreds of women and children were rescued by the Nigerian army last week from Islamist fighters in northern Nigeria’s Sambisa Forest in a major operation.

After days on the road in pickup trucks, hundreds were released on Sunday into the care of authorities at a refugee camp in the eastern town of Yola, to be fed and treated for injuries.
Some told reporters about their ordeal. “They didn’t allow us to move an inch,” said Asabe Umaru. “If you needed the toilet, they followed you. We were kept in one place. We were under bondage.

“We thank God to be alive today. We thank the Nigerian army for saving our lives.”

The camp took in 275 women and children, some with heads or limbs in bandages, late on Saturday.

Nearly 700 kidnap victims have been freed from the Islamist group’s forest stronghold since Tuesday, with the latest group of 234 women and children liberated on Friday.

“When we saw the soldiers, we raised our hands and shouted for help,” Umaru, a 24-year-old mother of two, told Reuters.

“Boko Haram, who were guarding us, started stoning us so we would follow them to another hideout, but we refused because we were sure the soldiers would rescue us.”

The prisoners suffered malnutrition and disease, she said. “Every day, we witnessed the death of one of us and waited for our turn.”

Another freed captive, Cecilia Abel, said her husband and first son had been killed in her presence before the militia forced her and her remaining eight children into the forest.

She barely ate for two weeks before the military arrived. “We were fed only ground dry maize in the afternoons. It was not good for human consumption,” she said.

“Many of us that were captured died in Sambisa Forest. Even after our rescue, about 10 died on our way to this place.”

The freed prisoners were fed bread and mugs of tea as soon as they arrived at the government camp. Dr Mohammed Aminu Suleiman of the Adamawa state emergency management agency said 19 were taken to hospital for special attention.

The army said troops patrolling on Saturday discovered 260 women and children wandering in Adamawa state. Some had fled their homes during fighting while others had been abducted but managed to escape from the Islamists.

The military said a supplier of food and fuel to Boko Haram was arrested on Sunday morning.

Amnesty International estimates the insurgents, who are intent on bringing western Africa under Islamist rule, have taken more than 2,000 women and girls captive since the start of 2014. Many have been used as cooks, sex slaves or human shields.

The prisoners freed so far do not appear to include any of more than 200 schoolgirls snatched from school dormitories in Chibok town a year ago, an incident that drew global attention to the six-year-old insurgency.

Umaru said her group of prisoners never came in contact with the missing Chibok girls.

You would know that even with 20/20 vision using steel sights trying to set up a target at 100 metres requires full concentration and time(time that you do not have) a moving target even much more, do you know how hard it is with an AK to get a head shot at a 150 metres ? takes skill and lots of training.

The optic sight brings the target closer to your eye magnifying the size such that for instance making it 3.5 times closer than it actually is essentially, the cross-hairs making targeting simplistically accurate and precise, you can see the target but the target can't see you. With very limited recoil on most modern assault rifles the probability hit rate even at 300metres to a trained operator is near 100%. It means you can take a split second to acquire a target and hit it and yes when its a head shot you can see the Boko turbaned head blow, so you will know the targets down.

Reliability things have moved on bro, the H&K G36, 416 are more reliable than the AK47, and just as rugged. I am also aware of a lot of the Chinese and even Nigerian AK47 variants jamming on the battlefield. The Mercedes ML 350 V6 engine may be more complicated than the Peugeot 505 2 litre double carburettor engine that doesn't make the 504 more reliable better, more fuel efficient and or powerful.

I Didn't really mention the M16, in a sense its somewhat phased out by the US Military and the Colt M4 carbine taking greater preference. Not to say the M16 is bad just that there are better assault rifles available nonetheless its still in use and very cheap. The Isreali Tavor 21 is just as good as it gets reliable, tough and super accurate not too expensive.

Nop bro what apologies ? Let's face reality bro, even the USarmy cannot field its whole army with FN SCAR 16 or M4 carbine,the present day russia can't still field its whole army with the new AK. 101,102 & 12. And even with those who are fielded with those modern riffles they don't come with the full accessories bro am not saying dis riffle are not good but u only is them with there special forces. The german army uses the H&K G36 do you know the size of the whole german army today ..... ? Btw 60,000 and 80,000 and the NA as almost half of 60-80K deployed to the north-east and you want to calculate that ? What about other complete gear and webbing even if our top brass are not corrupt we can't afford it, its way too expensive !
But wen u r talking bout our SF's I completely agree with U. And we,ve already saw the beryl riffles ,like two pics av surfaced even though the fore-sights ar absent ? Others r being placed for more and the tavor is in circulation which r not good for battle combact, tavor riffles r gud for special operations they make less noice signature ?
My point is soldiers should concentrate more on understanding ur riffle"Am nothing with-out my riffle and its my life", the millitary can provide soldiers with dot or LED sights to enhance accuracy but fielding the whole army with such weapon may be a dream that will never come true !

The women said Boko Haram fighters started pelting them
when they refused to run away as the army came nearer.
A group of nearly 300 women and children was brought out
of the vast Sambisa forest to a government camp.
The military says it has rescued more than 700 people in the
past week in an offensive against the Islamist group.
The women said several were killed in the stoning, but they
did not know how many '. Pregnant'
Others were killed inadvertently by the military during the
rescue operation, they added.
Soldiers did not realise "in time that we were not the
enemies" and some women and children were "run over by
their trucks", said survivor Asama Umoru.

The survivors said that when they were initially captured, the
militants had killed men and older boys in front of their
families before taking women and children into the forest.
Some were forced into marriage.
One woman, Lami Musa, 27, said she had avoided that fate.
"When they realised I was pregnant, they said I was
impregnated by an infidel [her husband] and they killed
him," she said.
'Skeletal bodies'
Ms Musa quoted the militants as telling her that "once you
deliver in a week's time we will marry you to our
commander".
"I delivered at night and we were rescued by the soldiers the
following morning," Ms Musa added, in tears.

Other survivors said the militant Islamists never let them out
of their sight - not even when they went to the toilet.
"They didn't allow us to move an inch," one of the freed
women, Asabe Umaru, told Reuters news agency. "We were
kept in one place. We were under bondage."
One woman described how they were fed just one meal a
day.
"We were fed only ground dry maize in the afternoons. It
was not good for human consumption," Cecilia Abel told
Reuters.
"Every day, we witnessed the death of one of us and waited
for our turn," said Umaru, a 24-year-old mother of two.
Some of the children were "just little skeletal bodies with
flaps of skin that make them look like old people",
Associated Press reporter Michelle Faul told the BBC after
visiting the camp where survivors were staying.
A doctor, Muhammad Amin Suleiman, said many severely
malnourished babies and children had been put on
intravenous drips at a clinic.
The women and children travelled for three days on pick-up
trucks from the vast Sambisa forest where they were
rescued, to the camp in the city of Yola, where they arrived
on Saturday night.
Chibok girls
Through interviews, officials have determined that almost all those rescued are from Gumsuri, a village near the town of Chibok, the Associated Press news agency reports.

It does not appear that any of those released are from the
group of more than 200 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by
Boko Haram a year ago in a mass abduction that led to
worldwide protests calling for the girls' release.
Thousands have been killed in northern Nigeria since Boko
Haram began its insurgency in 2009 to create an Islamic
state.
In February, Nigeria's military, backed by troops from
neighbouring countries, launched a major offensive against
the Islamist fighters, recapturing most of the territory Boko
Haram had taken in the previous year.
Their last remaining hideouts are believed to be in the
Sambisa forest, which surrounds a reserve of the same name.
