This is a nice thread. But 'Hausa' has absorbed so many other tribes that real Hausa is hard to define and is a very small minority of what is 'Hausa' today. Im not sure the population of original 'Hausa' was that big anyway. If you look at other 'chadic speakers/groups' like 'tangale' or 'margi' they are very small under 200k. In fact i think orginal Fulani outnumber orginal Hausa. What made Hausa big and spread the language is Islam, Once you speak Hausa and are a Muslim you are accepted in simple as that. Its a bit like being 'Arab'. So many people will claim they are 'Hausa' now including people whose parents are not even 'hausa'. For example a boy whose dad is fulani and mum is ebira living in Adamawa may only speak 'Hausa' langauge. Or a girl whose dad is fulani but mum is Kanuri will speak only Hausa. So to me Hausa is an umbrella term for many different 'black' Muslim ethnicties i.e Hausa, Fulani, Tuareg, Kanuri, Arab etc who communicate in Hausa language. |

CAMEROONPRIDE: Look let me clear this for you. As you know, because of missionary activity, trading, etc., some of the top brass of the Hausa were converted to islam. However, they basically refused to leave their original Hausa religion. the islam that spread initially in Africa was different from true islam as practiced in Arabia (like Wahabbism, Sunnism, etc.)> This islam was much milder and open to syncretism. it was of the sufi order. even now if you go to mosques in Senegal, etc., you will find these weird syncretised customs them practice, MARABOUTS (West Arican religious leaders who mix islam and pre-islamic trads.). Now over time, due to increasing wealth, political stability, etc., the Hausa rulers were not really fanatic about converting others or anything. They were themselves reverting slowly to more stronger Paganism. It was getting a stronger hold over their lives. Boori Priestesses were active in the Royal courts, Festivals were displayed with full ceremony, etc. now one of these settled Fulani living in the Hausa Empire, Shehu Dan Fudiye , was a member of the Maliki islamic school (SUNNI) which is very strict islam and fantaical and almost like wahabbism. His tutor was probably an Arab from the Berber lands (recently captures by Arabs) , by the name of Jibril bin Umar who undoubtedly was brainwashing him. Now Uthman was also personal tutor to the ruling Hausa ruler, our King Sarki Yunnfa of Gobir. Usually Kings emplyed these "learned" men to teach them language, some religion, etc. Sarki Yunfa soon started to dislike dan Fodio's fanatical islam. They had a religious argument since it was trying to undermin Hausa religion and the legitimacy of his throne, etc. dan fodio was therefore like a jesus. he was perceived as a threat to the stable Hausa Empire and People. Therefore, Sarki Yunfa started to suppress these maliki schools of islam and ban islamic stuff and kicked dan fodio out and then tried to kill him. However Dan Fodio escaped and ran away to the Fulani cattle herders who were his kin. There he probably did some preaching as well. Meanwhile, Sarki Yunfa turned for aid to the other leaders of the Hausa states, warning them that dan Fodio could trigger a widespread jihad. Now most of the commoner Hausas and especially he villagers and farmers who made up the biggest % were Pagans. However we lost the war because we didnt have fast moving cavalry (horses/camels), when compared to the Fulani Nomads who Dan Fodio rallied from the Sahel against us. We were mostly a settled Agricultural society. We were in a state of gradual city civilization. Most of the Hausa rulers were either killed, or abdicated after losing the battles since they refused to be Fulanized. Even now if you noticr, Daura and Argunggu, both remnants of the real Hausa Kingdoms, still do their best to promote Hausa Cultures, and through slight undertones Hausa religion as well. Therefore today, many Hausa Pagans are found towards Argunggu and all the way upto Niger. Niger especially. Even the ruler of Argunggu had a fight and disagreement with the Sokoto Lamido. The very Argunggu festival was created as a symbol of truce between this Hausa Kingdom and the Fulani Kingdom. no most of the Fulani Army was Cavalry. and Fulanis only knew how to ride those animals well. Ofcourse there might have been some Hausa blacksheep here and there who got brainwashed and sided with dan Fodio., but theres no proof and it probably never happened since Hausas wouldnt really go against their own rulers. Some say that some pheasants sided with him because of taxation by the Sarkindoms, but these are all personal gains and scattered instances. |

In fact i think orginal Fulani outnumber orginal Hausa. Umm not really. We have many subtribes but we still share common cause and identity. usually sub-tribes like Zazzaghawa, Kebbawa, Zamfarawa, Maguzawa, etc., are like Provincial lineages. but we are all 1 really. The tribes that have been "Hausaized" are the ones that have recently become so, over the past 50-100 yrs. These tribes no they are different but are still rapidly losing their idenitities and cultures. The Nigerian Govt. must do something to educate them and encourage them about this issue. They should open school subjects in their languages in those areas. Tangale and Marghyii are different. I have a friend who is Marghyii. They know they are different. The Marghyii were 100% Pagan until 30 yrs back. they are getting Fulanisized and islamized quickly if not already. Mostly the men converted because of job opportunities but the women among the Marghyii many have remaine Pagan. I know of a lady who left her husband and took her son away just because he became muslim. she still remains Pagan. Original Fulani might outnumber Hausa if you took the entire Fulani population, including that outside Nigeria in countries like Senegal, Gambia, Futa Djlonn, etc. mixed people dont count. to me mixed people are tribeless. unless they come from closely relate tribes with similar ethnicity. Even among the Arabs, the Arabs know who are pure arabs and who are not. ALL ARABS o the middle-east are aware that the pure Arabs are the Guld Arab Bedu tribespeople of UAE, KSA, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, and ofcourse the YEMEN. the Arabs of the Levant dont even consider themselves full Arabic. they call themselves Shami. they know they are different. same with Egyptians, Algerians, etc. etc. Touareg never speak Hausa btw. and the ÄRAB movement came only recently with the rise of Arab Nationalism and Pan-Arab movements. before that they never considered themselves havig anything to do with each other. The Egyptians in fact were threatening to pull out. |

delpee: Interesting! Thanks for the enlightenment. AlJinnu is actually an Arabic term. Meaning THE JINN or THE GOD or THE ULTIMATE SPIRITUAL FORCE. THe correct term would actually be Sarkin Iska. (King of the Winds/King of the Gods/ Chief God/ Supreme God) in YTR (Yoruba Traditional Religon) or as some call it YAS (Yoruba Advanced Sciences), the main God is Olodumare. The place of main God is usually given to the Creator Force , since its the origin. |

I still think the Hausa are the majority outnumbering the Fulani. Since the Fulani won the war and overthrew the Hausa rulers, any Hausa that wants position of authority must relate to some Fulani blood in him. That is what is still happening today. I hope more of this beautiful and distinct culture of Hausa to Fulani that are more in line with African culture will be taught in school so that Hausa can regain their pride. Once Hausa realize that they are African first, it may become difficult to set them against their African brothers and sisters. The Fulani blood in the North are just drops since Hausa blood has overtaken most of them. I dare say, there are very few Fulani in the North that do not have mostly Hausa blood in them. This is the only way to solve the hatred Nigerians have for one another. Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Berome, Efik etc are sons of the soil and must recognize themselves as brothers and sisters. We are Pagans first before any foreign religion divides us. The spirituality vested in women well before Western women liberation is one of the unique African culture seen all over. Yet this Europeans think they teach us about women power. PAGAN 9JA: |

Africa will never progress like that. that wont make us any different from the AAs or Europeans then. No what Africa needs is "PAN TRIBALISM" with unity based on Pagan Religions. we need to maintain our separate and diverse tribes and keep them strong. and we must work with each other on this untied goal. Its called UNITY IN DIVERSITY, not just tribals in Africa, but across the 3rd world Nations of the world. Hausas are majority in Nigeria, but im not sure outside Nigeria. very few Hausa have Fulani blood in them. and they are called Hausa-Fulani. and btw anyways, you were right on that point. any slight admixture will get diluted by the majority overwhelming genopool , so yeahh. You are right, Women had much more freedom and power back then. infact 1 of the Hausa rulers even now is a Woman by the name of Hadizatu. in one of the smaller Chiefdoms. I hope the status of women is elevated today. That article posted just now on frontpage about women being used as baby factory was so shocking. this is the sad state we have descended too today. It is you people who can bring about the change. if a christain missionary can travel all the way from Sweden or from Britain to Nigeria to convert us, then why cant a Nigerian educated person travel from Abuja or Lagos to his village during the weekend or holidays and educate his own people Im sure we can do it! |

ifyalways: Where do you place the Sultan of Sokoto? A curious look at any standard history book of west Africa will answer this question. The Hausa king of Gobir (a muslim) recieved a Fulani traveller, turned friend, turned teacher/preacher, and soldier. The Hause king(Mohammadu- I belive he was called) grew to trust this fulanis friend so much that he let him into state secrets, wives, wealth, etc. The traveller then attacked his Hausa king-host. His excuse was that Mohammadu pracrtised "impure" form of Islam. After overthrowing the rulers of Hausa state of Gobir, this Fulani killer moved to settle in nearby Sokoto. Using the same tact, the Fulani traveller sent his son, cousins, uncle to take over other major Hausa city states such as Kano, Rano, Katsina, Daura, etc. BTW, that Fulani traveller was called Othman dan Fodio, and that is why 98% of all Hausa city states have Fulani emirs today. |

Fulaman198 WOW, even I didn't know that. I used to think the Touareg made their own indigo dyed clothing. Did not know that the Hausa were responsible, Shame on me! Hi Bro The Touareg are not known for hard work nor intensively cultivated craftsmanship. They are nomads by tradition/culture and rarely involved in any other trade besides trading and marauding robbers in the Sahara . The settled ones in Mali are no different from their ancient habits/ways. It is partly the source of the national/ethnic problem of Mali, Algeria, Niger and Mauritania. |

What exactly do you mean by "the worst mind set"? Islam does not really recognise boundaries/modern nation statehood. You are muslim first before being a so called Nigerian or African as you put it. How can you begrudge anybody for believing/ having a faith which you clearly do not understand. If I may ask, Is Christianity your original faith/ belief system? Are so called Christians not the marauding Crusaders of ancient times? Are they not our conquerors as Slavers and Colonisers that you fervently embrace their faith and bad habit of Prejudice et al. Bro, go easy with your prejudice. 1 Like |

Malawian where is boko haram and ansaru in all of these? a honest question please. Boko Haram and Ansaru are probably Kanuri populated and from Bornu state/Chad/Cameroon. They are not Hausa. Hausas are inherently Peaceful, farmers and tradesmen/women hence they were easily defeated by the Fulani. |
Re: The "REAL" Hausa by cheikh: 4:56am On May 10, 2013 |
CAMEROONPRIDE How come Fulani, control all your states? are Hausa not interested in politic? Do you guys fear fulani? Bro, African conquerors/colonisers were benevolent and were not interested in imposing their language on 'others' otherwise the Southwest that was part of Benin empire would be speaking Bini/Edo language hence "Benevolence" is in order/culture. Hausa is the predominant language spoken in the North other than in Bornu state. |

cheikh: naijaking1 you're confusing europeans with africans. are ethiopians crusaders? Are they not christians? When Mohammed saw the persecution to which his followers were subjected to in Mecca, he told them to find safe haven in northern Ethiopia, Abyssinia, where they would "find a king there who does not wrong anyone." It was the first hijra (migration) in Islam history Unable to bear the hardships, a group of 15 Muslims, on the advice of Muhammad, migrated to Axum (in 613) where a benign Christian ruler, king Negus gave them shelter. In seventh Islamic month (Rajab) of 7 BH (614–615 CE),[4] eleven men and four women undertook the first migration.[5] The group was headed by a companion called Uthman bin Maz'oon. wiki |

lacasa: Pagan, i salute ur knowledge overall. The Zaria Hausas in the past were the most important Hausas of all. the Zaria Sarkindom was the important seat of Hausa rule. The Zaria Hausas in the past were mostly farmers and there was a sizeable majority of city-dwellers. The Zaria men, Zezzege used to have tribal marks as of : 1) a vertical line in the middle of the forehead to middle of eye called Tsagan Goshi or 2) a small line on the right cheek called bille. 3) both After the Fulani invasion, many Zazzau Hausa migrated to Suleja (Abuja) with the fleeing Sarki Jatau. those that remained. a few got mixed with FUlani settlers and are called Hausa-FUlani. the rest mostly disperesed towards the country-side or to other areas of Hausaland. The current Sarkin SUleja is actually destroying Hausa culture instead of protecting it. he is completely brainwashed. Last time , he banned all the traditional Hausa masquerades, practice of bridegrooms holding Hens tail during royal weddings, races by bridegrooms, and other such cultural activities and traditional rituals. He says that it is un-islamic and now he has better understanding of islam. the old fool. |

rash47: Kudos mr pagan, you've done a very very insightful research work here. Pls I have some few questions if u don't mind; - Im based everywhere. Nigeria, Middle-East, Asia, and UK mostly. No actually the locals dont care so much. they have got used to us. before they used to create problems. some xtian missionaries also tried to come to our places before for missionary work (quite recently). but the muslims and local Hausas didnt let them. but if anyone ask me , I tell what I am. I dont hide. -The Fulanis actually are descended from a very ancient predecessor people of the Sahara, of whom we have little information, save archaeology and some rock painings near Timbuctoo and Niger. THey actually did not originate anywhere. They keep roaming across the entire Sahara desert. They originated from the Sahara. Their main centres today are Senegambia, etc. The Fulani and Tuareg normally roam together and they even converge at important festivals. - yes we are in decent numbers. though a bit in decline. We are mostly found around Kano and Katsina. Some of us are found upto Gumel and Argungu. 1 Like |

HAUSA MUSIC: SAADOU BORI . ENJOY! Sadly he has passed away now. he died in a road accident when returning from Maidaguri, @ the age of 50. Bori, who hailed from Niger Republic, was a practitioner of Dango (Hausa spirit music) and trance-dancing. He practiced Boori SPirituality. His best known songs, recorded together with another notable Nigerien artiste, Moussa Poussy, include "Toro," "Nabo Nabo", "Weino," "Gossi," "Gaweizo," "Gazera," "Dango," "Yallerou," "Bori," "Boudje," "Hadiza," and "Soyeya." Many of these songs are played on radio stations in all Hausa-speaking areas in Nigeria. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fx0jIS0JQX4 |
