Actually, what comes first is paying homage

a believer should grow in grace, and not be always falling into sin and asking for forgiveness. come up higher.

If God is truly your Father that you have a relationship with and prayer is how you communicate with Him, then it doesn't really matter what you say first before the other.

...If you know in your heart that you have offended your father, the first thing you ought to do is ask his forgiveness. If you are feeling thankful, then jump up and praise Him. If you are feeling sad, tell Him how you feel.

Prayer is not a ritual that must repeated in a certain order. It is a discussion with God. If you are always feeling dirty before you meet God, then something is wrong somewhere if you ask me.
