On the long run, if we don't have any sector to feed these hotels, halls and conference centres.

They might not be viable on the long run, it might lead to a over supply. Which would ultimately lead to a fall in price reducing there viability and make businesses go elsewhere.

If there's an attraction the really brings in tourists from other states, this can pump in money directly from external inflows as a result of there presence.

Secondly if there was industries, the workers would have disposable income which can be used to spend on this hotels and centres.

The list goes on.

We can't continue to bank on Diasporan revenues, eg when IMO indigenes come home from far and wide they want to have fun then they spend money in these places then after the peak periods the operational capacity reduces.

You see most of the centres being used just maybe once in a while. It would be nice we have an all year long peak period from Jan to December like what obtains in Lagos

let's not deceive ourselves here. How many factories are in Las Vagas and Macau? Even if we decide to fill IMO state with factories, w
we all know that factory workers hardly get time to take care of themselves considering the time they spend at work and the little salary they receive monthly. I've worked in a factory before and I know what I'm saying. We received bullshit as salary and sometimes spend our weekends at work just to get extra pay. Is it those type of people that will patronize the hotels and malls in Owerri?
The major businesses that run in places like Owerri are retail businesses, livestock production, gambling, restaurant businesses, hospitality business, banking and finance.
Manufacturing industries can be located outside Owerri municipal. Owerri municipal is about 30 sqkm and if Ndigbo can make it a top tourist destination in Africa, that'll be good for us.

No. A lot is happening in Imo.

A new federal government Fire fighting Training School for Southeast states has been established in Owerri.

Gov Ihedioha builds 1000 houses in Owerri north local govt area.

Water shall soon be restored in Owerri.

Gov Ihedioha is enlarging Imo state university in Owerri.

Gov Ihedioha is fast closing potholes on the roads of our state capital.

With these, the population of our beloved State capital shall balloon, as more people from the remaining villages in Imo state continue to migrate to Our state capital where all 6 universities and polytechnics exist. Imopoly is like in Owerri.

Before long, we shall be left with more farmlands in Imo state outside Owerri.

Imo state is moving accordingly to that Owerri Declaration in 1991 made after the bitter experience of Assets Sharing between Imo and Abia states when Abia was carved out of old Imo state.

Owerri Declaration was: NO MEANINGFUL DEVELOPMENT INFRASTRUCTURE OF GOVERNMENT MUST BE PERMITTED AGAIN BY OWERRI OUTSIDE OWERRI SENATORIAL ZONE.

Stone Age mindset of a group in Imo state.

Whoever generates refuse pays for its disposal. This is a universal truth Owerri people refuse to accept.

Owerri people want gov to use money for providing common pipe borne water in Okigwe and Orlu areas to fund refuse disposal in Owerri.

Bring more university and polytechnic to Owerri north to reduce refuse.

Owerri people clutch tight on all institutions of govt that enable development where located. They have no respect for the feelings of people in shortchanged Orlu and Okigwe zones

O boy, no be funny matter o.
Consider that last month's Federal Fire Training institution for the Southeast which should have been located anywhere in Imo state outside congested Owerri, but these Owerri people also cornered it to Owerri, in addition to all 7 tertiary education institutions of govt in Imo state cornered to Owerri.
It's like madness in Imo state where people of one zone absolutely refuse to consider anything for development of the other two zones. A most primitive type of GREED.

Owerri people fought every governor of Imo state from Udenwa to Ohakim to Okorocha who tried to remove Imo state university from Owerri to any of the other two zones that have nothing.

As Owerri expands, there comes the need to provide more infrastructures in Owerri to cope with growing population.

For example, new gov is building new 1000 housing units in Owerri. Nothing to make life worth living in Okigwe or Orlu.
So nothing like with time, other zones shall collect their own.

Why does the Nigerian government get it's self involved in building houses? Not only are they taking business away from those who do it privately, they're wasting resources by venturing into real estate for no reason.

This is not true.

Anyone can go into real estate business, including the government. However, government cannot provide accommodation for everyone, so the private sector is also needed.

And who says it's a crime if the government runs some businesses? Government mostly builds and sell off properties.

Nigerians are typically wicked and will always exploit fellow Nigerians if the government doesn't intervene in certain critical sectors.

These days people pay for:

- Rent
- Agreement fee and agent fee
- Caution fee
- Legal fee (yes, I paid that!)

And some landlords will insist that you pay two years' rent, including fresh graduates. Again, Nigerians are very wicked people who use religion to cover up evil.

The 1 thing dysfunctional countries have in common is government owned businesses.
Your mentality on this is backwards. You shouldn't be saying 'government cannot provide accommodation for everyone'. Government has no reason to provide accommodation for anyone in a state that has land sellers, and home builders. Nobody expects government to provide accommodation for everyone. So with the mentality you're approaching it with, government becomes the home provider and the private sector are helper.

This is why the private sector struggles to create jobs. Government should not be taking business away from it's own businesses. If the private sector has that land and builds on it, the government collects tax. If the government builds it, the government spends it's own money and now has to high more civil servants to chase tenants around. This creates a bloated expensive government that is fixing roofs and drainage pipes for its home tenants instead of governing, and providing public sector resources like roads.

Is there a struggle in Imo state to build houses? Are they not coming up fast enough? If anything hotels and real estate are the primary sectors in the state.

In Nigeria you have a government that

1. Builds taxi services, even though the state is crammed with private taxis.
2. Builds hotels
3. Builds meeting halls
4. Builds factories

I know that in Nigeria this is normal but you have to understand that Nigeria is an extraordinarily abnormal and ignorant place and this isn't done in sane environments. You will never hear Donald Trump announcing that the US government is starting a taxi 'scheme' (as it's called in Nigeria), you will never point me to a government owned or government built hotel in the US, and you will never show me a government build meeting hall or government build factory.

Instead of empowering the people already doing these things. You build your own to reduce the amount of customers they can gain then you fail to maintain it because you're already overloaded.

What is worst is the government will use public money, build the house, and sell it at private rates.
If the government does build something it's supposed to be at a benefit to the public. But they will sell it or charge just as much as everyone else so that the government is one of 1000 companies in the state doing the same thing.

The money used to build those houses could have repaired all of the damaged roads in the state (road repair is cheap), but instead it's being used to build and sell houses as if not enough people were doing this in Imo

Nigerians aren't 'wicked'. Exploitation is a part of businesses and always will be. The issue is the GOVERNMENT that's supposed to be using it's money to audit and regulate is using it's money to run it's own real estate venture.

Sorry, your first statement would not let me read the rest because it's false.

That the US government does not run companies should not mean that there are no countries where government own companies.

China has the second biggest economy in the world and government still controls lots of companies.

Nigeria is not a serious country...the country didn't even deserve independence...

It should not be a yardstick for measuring seriousness.

Without that independence you would be an illiterate, barefoot farmer or hunter or tailor like your grandfather, so STFU. Mass education only began after independence.

The colonialists looted the country's resources and did not invest in anything, including education. Why were your great grandparents not lawyers, doctors and industrialists, but village illiterates? Yet you say you didn't deserve independence.

That’s why it would have been better government leave one generation to another so that fresh ideas can be injected into the system. People like you are needed in Imo State to contribute with ideas on how to move the State foward in a modern way but you can't get that opportunity right now because politics of gratification is in place and people that contributed in making of the office holders have to regain money invested. No State in Nigeria is actually working.

Some states like Delta and Anambra, with learned politicians are working. Imo state except Owerri is as good as dead.

Most of the instruments like portable water supply and tertiary education institutions that engender development where provided, are evenly provided in Anambra and Delta states.

But in Imo state, poorly educated politicians, worse, Rochas Okorocha, coupled with primitive greed in Owerri zone, make all instruments of development cluster only in Owerri zone.

The Orlu and Okigwe zones of Imo state remain in near dark ages.

The new governor from Owerri zone has set out early with policies to worsen the situation in Orlu and Okigwe zones.
