That cannot be a general phenomenon. However, you should note that Nigerians are people who have been gyped out of their money severally by service providers without getting services for money (NEPA for years, GSM operators, Water corporation etc), and their subconscious is configured to think one needs not always pay, especially if the other party is overly friendly. Just position yourself not to be vulnerable to their schemes and, believe me, they'll pay. Have terms and conditions that should apply to all your customers and let them know you wouldn't make any concession. You need personal discipline yourself!!!

U probably didn't strike a firm contract..
Never carry out a job if u haven't rcvd a certain amount dat u deem suitable..
Never carry out a job on d basis of 'anything u give me, i go take'
Be firm in your terms.
If they eventually don't pay up, tell dem u're from 'ALUU'

Why don't you draw up a contract for your clients to execute even before you start the job at all? That way, you will have a legal ground to sue and claim damges, including what it costs you to drag them to court.

Because most are ingrates.

Even when you help them, they don't appreciate.

They believe you can do more than what you have done.

The government taught us all that. From flaunting obvious contractual terms to the fake promises of fictitious minimum wages and so on. Just make sure you do not hand over without collecting your pay first, if not ; you may never get paid again and the customer may also never patronize you again.

Because you're not a very good businessman. Your clients see this, and they take full advantage of it. Go back to business 101, draw out a payment term, and ensure you both agree on it before you render your services.

I have always paid the Federal Government of Nigeria for every government service for all my two duly registered companies and one duly incorporated company and I also pay my bills, but yet I have to buy my drinking water and power supply when the government fails to supply power and the roads in Nigeria are the worst I have ever seen since I was born.

State your terms and conditions of work well and be serious in it.
the way you organize yourself will bring about the way people will deal with you.
Thanks.

Just another angle to the dishonesty and indiscipline of the average Nigerian, that's all. Factor it into your business model and charge those that pay more to cover the gap. Everyone does it, airlines, PHCN, telecos, traders, etc. One of the reasons the cost of living rivals Tokyo or London while were worse than Calcutta or Karachi.

You'd be surprised that even blue-chip companies owe and are being owed. The day I accidentally saw a memo from one of the now defunct banks to another is the day my mind was made up. Even government doesn't pay for services as and when due and am not talking about party politricking, statutory obligations.

Yes, to cover for those who won't pay. If you were the bank that Otedola once owed 140bill and had the freedom to set rates, fees and charges won't you be tempted to hike them to remain afloat.

OP,

you need to adopt a policy of advance payment or you refuse the contract. That model has worked for me for years. The problem is that many people do not turn down jobs from some of these chronic debtors, maybe out of hunger. You need to filter your clients.
