Ogun Gives Families Of Slain Policemen 500K Each. by kawkab: 7:18am On Oct 25, 2012
The Ogun State Government on Wednesday gave the family members of the five policemen killed by armed robbers in the Abeokuta and Ibafo areas of state early this week N2.5m.

The policemen were, Inspector Christopher Ugwu, Inspector Josiah Udoh, Corporal Istefenwa Day, Sergeant James Adejor and Sergeant Nwachukwu Udoka.

Each of the family got N500, 000 at the Governor’s Office Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, who handed over the money to the families, said it was meant to cover burial expenses as well as to meet the immediate needs of the family members.

Flanked by the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikemefuna Okoye, and other senior officials of the state, the SSG also said adequate arrangements had been made by the state government to pay the medical bills of the two other policemen injured during the incident.

The SSG also conveyed the state condolence message from Governor Ibikunle Amosun to the family members of the deceased policemen, commending the gallantry they exhibited in confronting the robbers.

Adeoluwa said the state government would also give the next of kins of each of the policemen N1m after the burial.

“We are grateful and indebted to these fallen heroes. We share in your grief and pains at this period. We are grateful to the dead and the living. They have paid the supreme sacrifices in the cause of protecting lives and property of residents of the state.

“We also thank God for sparing the lives of those who sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving treatment. We are gladdened that they are responding to treatment. We wish them quick recovery. The Governor has directed that the state bears all expenses relating to their treatment. We are doing that, and, we are monitoring the progress of their recovery.”

Adeoluwa assured the people of the state that the government would tackle insecurity headlong.

I believe we expect too much from our Policemen. A man looses his life in the line of duty and the family gets 500k only from state government. They don't have insurance cover and other death benefits. I am very sure it would take almost forever for the Police Pensions office to pay their pension and gratuity to their family. Now tell me how would others still in service react next time there is a distress call or a robbery incident.

While I am not a fan of SIA, I think this is a good one. Whether or not 500k is enough is another issue. The important thing is that he should pay the families of the dead policemen latest next week. It is one thing to announce and present cheques to the families, it is another thing for the money to actually enter their accounts. He should not put them in 'IS COMING'.

The same amount of money a person would spend on drinks on a typical friday night clubbing, that's what is being given as compensation for human life. How long are their families expected to survive with this?

Everybody saying that 500k is laudable is really sick. What would you do with 500k when the policemen probably have wife and children? Poverty have really affected how many Nigerians think. If a senators monthly salary can run into millions of naira, why can't people that are entrusted with the protection of life and properties not be given good emolument incase of death?
Mind you, there are other living policemen seeing what is happening and this act of the government will strongly affect how they deal with their job in the future.

RIP to the dead officer, may God grant his family the fortitude to bear this lost.
This is a sad development in our nation, 500,000 for a man killed in the line of duty?
Dat barely cover the funeral alone.
We pay militants billions of naira every year but when an officer of the law dies, we pay them 500,000.
The government paid 100 million to the family of the slained leader of boko haram (a terrorist) but when a law enforcement officer dies, well let the dead bury their dead.
How can we blame this guys when they refuse to answer any call for help if this is how they are treated when killed in the line of duty?

Please calm down and read the article again. It is obvious this is not likely to be the only support that will be extended to the families of the slain officers.

In as much as i can't die for Nigeria. I think there is alot more to be done by the state government. No doubt The policemen are federal properties but they render services at the state level. And With the trend in which Millions of Naira are given to slain boko boys families whom are terrorist. I don't see anything wrong if the state government gives each of the families 10M each. I believe that'll go a long way in covering some necessity of the family especially the children.

I don't think the state government is under any obligation to pay the policemen. The payment was just made out of compassion and for the fact that they fell in Ogun state. It's just a sick country were crooks(terrorist and militants) are rewarded by the FG more than the peacemakers (the policemen).

From the write up, it is stated that the 500K is to cover burial expenses and other immediate needs; but we all know that in Nigeria that is where it would end on the part of the state government; they can always claim that the officer are men of the federal police.

On the part of the federal Government and the force Headquarters, i dont see them giving the family more that 2 million naira. Now the question to ask is this; how do we value our police men. Those alive would see this acts and you still expect them to risk their life for others knowing that when they die what would be given to their family would not be enough to see their family and their children through school.

Lets do a realistic check, if you are the one and you realise that the government only values your life to the tune of 5million only, would you be willing to take a bullet in the name of fighting crime for such a society; especially when you know that militants are paid million and that most politicians buy cars wort millions for their girls friends and the common man on the street hates you as much as the devil and you dont have enough training and equipments to fight crime.

Mind you I am not a policeman. I am just being realistic

It seems you fail to appreciate the concept of how it is the FG that must look after our Policemen and women. Saxywale has already answered properly below. This is why some of us continue to support State Policing. The FG will not arm, pay, train or motivate our Policemen appropriately. They are found wanting compensating them as well yet folks like you round on Governors who are acting out of compassion and not out of official obligation.

Even though u re a Policeman, u spoke that facts, I works in Police Pension and Insurance Company and I have the Police death benefits off hand, because we insured Police force in our company.
From the Rank of Police Constable, Corporal, sergents, Inspectors re given N500,000 for their Inusrance in a case of any accident, while the same Ranks get 100,000 on natural death ground. E.g sick etc, Sergent gets 150,000, while Inspector get 200,000 for same case, from Ranks of ASP to CSP gets 1Million and AC to CP. N1.5m can u see Nig Govt is NOT encouraging its security personnel, and as for their gradtuity.. Is another topic, because Inspectors downward re LESS dan 2.5M. So the State govt tried, how much is even Police take home salary per annum self? Infact I respects them for still coping with such hardship mounted on them by careless Govt and expecting them to performs magic, I.G cant take home 700,000 per month, then come down to the real men at work, Inspectors, Rank and files.

Thank you for the enlightenment, this speaks volume of the kind of bad system and very debauched government we have in Nigeria. Even if they give each families #5M, it more than worth it. When there is nothing to serve as incentives, how would the police be encouraged to save and protect Nigeria and its citizenry? If things continue this way, then Nigeria can never get any better or developed. cry cry cry cry
