A week after hitting the Caribbean, Hurricane Sandy made landfall along the east coast of the US on Monday evening as a powerful storm. Worst fears have been realised, with 16 people killed, millions of homes without power, and road, rail and airline networks paralysed. Only last year, New York City and other parts of the eastern US were hit by Hurricane Irene, which left a trail of damage and disruption, estimated by NOAA to have cost $19bn. So what has made Hurricane Sandy’s impact so great? The size of Hurricane Sandy was truly phenomenal – something that can only be fully appreciated when looking at the storm on a satellite picture. Prior to making landfall, hurricane-force winds (sustained speed of 74mph and above) and tropical storm-force winds (sustained speed of 39-73mph) extended 175 miles and 485 miles from the centre of the storm respectively. According to NOAA, in a typical large hurricane, tropical storm-force winds would only reach out 300 miles from a storm’s centre. To put this into context, if the centre of hurricane Sandy was placed over Paris, the tropical-storm force winds would affect much of western Europe |

I don't know how this could have effect in far away Lagos. Scientifically, hurricanes that hit US gulf coast starts like small whirl winds in West African and gather speed as they move towards the Americas. Winds are one way traffic including there effects such as ocean surge and the rest, so it will be difficult to expect backlash at the source. For tsunamis that occur as a result of underwater earthquakes, it is understandable if effect is felt in all direction around the source depending on magnitude. Maybe LASG can elaborate further on explanation of their warning. |

When I saw this topic on the front page, I began to wonder sincerely how the hell did a commissioner know there's gonna be a ripple of hurricane sandy? We have other countries close to the coastal region who have not even blown an alarm to that effect. Nigeria don't even have the facilities or manpower to forecast or predict such effects. |

NewsFlash101: LMAO . Hurricane Sandy which is a category 1 storm hits the US and they are shaking like rats and making a huge noise out of it. Meanwhile typhoon Son Tinh which is a category 5 storm hits China and southern asian countries at the same time, and no one hears of it. It is as if nothing happened in that part of the world, VERY SELFISH OF THE MEDIA. CNN showed both. But you should realise that the financial damage arw not the same at all. Sandy damage cost should be fifty times more. Why should American media concentrate on Asia while a historic storm was threatening them? |

A powerful undersea earthquake can cause severe Tsunami all over, but I don't see how this hurricane Sandy can affect Lagos. |

Nigerians never fail to surprise me. The man is giving a warning of possible ripple effects. If he did not give this warning and the effects are felt here you would all be blaming them for negligence and stupidity. Sinple advice: stay away from the coast. How hard can that be? |
