One time Military Governor of Katsina State, Gen. Lawrence Onoja (rtd.), has said Boko Haram Islamist sect was fighting a good cause, lamenting, however, that it was spoiling its case by killing innocent Nigerians.

Onoja said he would have joined the sect if they had started killing election riggers, who carry ballot boxes home, thumb-print and announce results from their houses instead of resorting to killing innocent people.

He made this known in Minna, Niger State, while contributing to steps towards achieving peace in the country, especially in the northern region, pointing out that the sect has “a genuine case”.

He said: “If you look at it from the beginning, they (Boko Haram) have genuine case. I have told people that I would have been a member of Boko Haram before they started killing innocent people.

“But if they had started going after those who rig elections; those who carry ballot boxes to their houses, thump-print and start announcing fake results the next day, which is what most people are doing; if they go after such people, I will join them.

“What we don’t want is to start wasting innocent people’s lives.”

But even if Boko Haram only targeted (and by "target", I mean kill/assasinate. In other words, jungle justice) those who rig elections, this would still be illegal and unjust. After all, who determines who should be targeted?

Should the youth corper in Sokoto State who is forced to allow children to vote also be executed?

What happened to innocent before proven guilty sef undecided

I don't think that this guy really thought through what he was saying before he said it.

In his mind I'm sure he thinks that its okay to kill election riggers.. What makes this man different from ALUU residents that thought it was okay to kill suspected robbers?!

This ex-military slowpoke just said he supports jungle justice.. SIMPLE!! What the slowpoke failed to understand is that at all times, the rule of Law must remain the only way to fight injustice..

Both boko and those who rig election to steal monies meant to improve the living standard of Nigerians are one and the same. To a lesser degree NLanders who post/comment without thinking also follow in the misdeed.

How on earth can a General make such a statement and you blame Aluu community. It's just a reflection of our society and the fact that Nigeria is a jungle. The other day before the elections in ondo state, The general Officer Commanding (GOC) Nigeria Army 2 Division, Major Gen. Mohammed Abubakar, gave a shoot at sight order to his soldiers. we don't respect and value lives!

all of you who are saying that lawrence onoja (a respected general who fought for the unity of nigeria in the civil war and also saved the igbos from making the bigest mistake of their lives) is this and that, are either anti idoma or you simply failed english lang in your waec becos of your inability to understand comprehension passage. How else can we explain your inability to read what the highly esteemed man said and come to see that he was only advicing BH to stop killing inocent people and poliTRICKcians to stop malpractice.

Believe me this onaja of a person knows all the boko haram members and their bloody sponsors because for him to claim he could have joined them means he knows who they are..#just thinking...GEJ knows these BH and their sponsors but it seems he cant touch them cos i have reasons to believe that most prominent men/elites/governors/chiefs/senators/business men e.t.c in the north are their sponsors and trying to arrest all of them might lead to something he dont wish for.hmmmm May God save us.
