Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by odumchi: 12:31am On Jan 02, 2013 |
NRI PRIEST: Odumche,"ihu" and "ighu" aren't pronounced the same way. I don't know what you 're arguing about. We Anambrarians say "ihu". Eze-Promoe is correct. Wonders shall never end. If I may ask, what is the difference in the pronunciation of 'ihu' (to see) and 'ighu' (to roast)? |

Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by ChinenyeN(m): 4:22am On Jan 02, 2013 |
I don't think I would write 'to roast' as "ighu", unless I want to write 'to see' in the same manner, because there really in no difference between the "h" sound of both words (at least not in my lect). Odumchi, I believe I have familiarized myself with it. As for how, I guess it's just as I would learn any other convention. I saw how people used it and what words they used it for, and because I knew the words, a pattern just fell in place over time. |

Re: Igbo learning thread + Translator by ifyalways(f): 10:28am On Jan 02, 2013 |
odumchi:Not butting in to your argument but there is a difference in pronuonciation of the two words ie ihu(face) and ighu( to roast) ihu on pronounciation, has one stress on i but ighu(to roast) is stressed on both i and ghu and with a pause in between. And happy new year my brother.A gajem Aro echi. |

Eze Promoe: well not to cause confusion. but my mom always say it. i use okpokija all the time. i think it means na wah oh... or odiegwu. it can also be used when your suprised, like for example a child that you try to trick into doing something and they know what you are up to, you can then say okpokija nwa awala anya. my mom is from inyshi in owerri... so mua amarom oh. okpocha is like okpokija. |
